  1. I already did that, not like that but by importing a reg file. It doesn't work, the font doesn't even show up in the Fonts folder (although it is there) if i do that. I need to reboot to get it recognized...
  2. If the laptop only has USB 1.1 ports (which seems to be the case), then you won't be able to read/burn DVDs on it since it doesn't have enough speed. USB 1.1 is barely enough for an old flash drive, it maxes out at 1.5MB/s. The minimum burning speed for DVD+R discs is 2.4x, which is 3.24MB/s, more than double what a 1.1 port can provide.
  3. Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Of course you'll also need the critical stuff such as Windows Management Instrumentation and DCOM.
  4. The domain is dead because nobody cared about it. I can bring it back up at any time if anyone would bother to do the site. I'll start making tutorials on how to install the various service packs, and once i get a little site done with those tuts i'll up them to that domain. However, i have other things on my mind at the moment. I'm patching some bugs in an older game to make it run properly under XP and vista. Of course i would love to do work on 98 instead (and i'm almost done patching anyway), but there's one thing you have to realize here: Nobody cares right now. Me and specialbao1 have exchanged a lot of PMs on various matters, and it seems we're really the only ones interested in doing this. In this situation our work would be pretty much useless. I mean of course tutorials would help, but they certainly aren't worth a domain, we could just post them in the forum. Coz here's how it works. The game i am working on - not very difficult to patch. What's more difficult is learning to solve XP's quirks when applying the actual patch. But anyway, i don't need much assistance on it. Whereas an OS is an immensely complex compilation of programs. Look at it this way - 98 has evolved a lot with all the work done here, but taking it further requires a community effort. Let's say me and specialbao1 write tutorials and compile the documentation already written here in various places, into one nice clean site. But what if one of the people following our tutorials stumbles upon an undocumented bug? We aren't experienced coders therefore we can't really help. I myself have a few problems with certain programs in my WinMe install, but i don't know whether they have to do with Windows itself, with KernelEx, with UberSkin or with my drivers. There are just too many variables, and that's why i don't ask for help with these issues because i would probably confuse both Xeno86 and Tihiy. But what if Tihiy and Xeno86 (and not only them) would work together, look at each other's code and fix the mistakes? This has already been done with the merging of UberKern into KernelEx, but we need more than that. We need to work as an organized group. Even on the game i work on patching, where i do most of the work alone, i still ask around for suggestions on how to do this and that better, i share WIP versions with a fellow moderator on the DigitalZone Board (i am a mod there too), and do a lot of beta testing before releasing the patch to the public. I also contacted the author of a walkthrough for that game and asked him if he could link to my patch when it's done. These are the kind of things we should do here as well. Fredledingue, i think most people here are concerning themselves too much with what Microsoft thinks about this community. My guess is that they simply don't care, as they're far from losing even the tiniest bit of the market share of their current products - they could even win some more if we get their new software to run on 98.
  5. Yes, i've searched. But none of the solutions worked. I have an application that requires a font installed. A single font, with only one version, and i need that font installed via the command line, without having to reboot the system. I have tried restarting the explorer.exe process, when i do that the font does appear in Explorer but is still unavailable in my application. Any clues on how to fix this? Fontinst.exe does not work either, as it is an OTF font. I find it stupid that you can install a font without rebooting by simply dropping it into the fonts folder, but you can't mimic this behaviour with a batch file. I guess this is one of the moments i'd be much happier running Linux.
  6. Thanks thydreamwalker. Now if only i would get my lazy a** to work.
  7. At the stage we are in, doing that would just ask for trouble.
  8. Although ME goes much better with my laptop i'd say 98SE. Just for DOS. And it would be best for us to work as a group, that's why this thread was created in the first place. Email: th3_un1qu3@digitalpowered.info Yahoo ID: th3_un1qu3
  9. I have always used the custom (no ramdisk) bootdisks from www.bootdisk.com, you can drop in there all that you want, and there is no cab file to update.
  10. I'll give this a shot sometime... @ RetroOS, why a dualie? I have a dual-PIII machine too and it's really nice, but you know 98 can only work with one CPU anyway...
  11. Alright. School's almost out here, so i'll soon (in a few days) start working on compiling documentation for what's been already developed. Tutorials, pictures and everything.
  12. Strangely, the Me explorer in 98SE2ME/RP7 crashed a lot on my laptop in sig, but is rock solid under actual Me + Uberskin...
  13. Install drivers, then 98SE2ME, then RP7, and KernelEx last. This way you're going to have the least trouble (if any).
  14. Mine is like this: 3mbit connection from a local ISP (depends on server, can get over 10mbit on sites from Germany and Switzerland since our ISP gets their wire from there but in general it's 3mbit) -> Going into FREESCO-based router box (old Fujitsu, P1 @ 133, 32 RAM, 2x 3Com 3C509 NICs) --> from FREESCO box to TrendNet 8-port switch --> Port 1 - input from the router ---> Port 2 - mom's computer ---> Port 3 - my main computer ---> Port 4 - my laptop Rest of the ports are currently unused. Backup. All wired up since when i first linked my computer and mom's 2 years ago i didn't think i would need wireless, and why bother to buy wireless NICs now since they're slower than wired and i do quite a bit of LAN transfers.
  15. I have no problems with RAM usage - my TinyVista takes only 300-400MB at idle - but i have a problem with the general "feel" of the OS. It's smoother than XP, but this smoothness makes it feel laggy.
  16. If it's not that then check chipset/mobo/cpu drivers, maybe you left out some that you shouldn't have. HyperThreading makes your CPU almost twice as fast, you don't want to lose it.
  17. I don't know of any PCI SB16 cards. I have an ISA one though, and it works perfectly under DOS with just this line in autoexec.bat, no drivers needed as DOS had native support for the SB: SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T4 H6 P330 You have to check the jumper settings of the card, they have to match the above line.
  18. I'm afraid your HDD is busted. Unmountable Boot Volume BSOD indicates that a file critical to booting the system could not be read. You can try reinstalling, but if the error comes back after a few months you'll have to replace your hard drive.
  19. Tihiy, what is the eventual reason/s for cancelling this project? Xeno86 doesn't update his KernelEx regulary. Maybe because he doesn't have time to work on it and needs to focus on more important things.
  20. And Opera FTW. Seriously, if you're still a win9x user and don't run IE, then Opera is the best alternative.
  21. Works fine for me in WinME, didn't get any of that. But please stay away from the 9.5 betas, they're SLOW.
  22. I've checked for curiosity both clips - no problem for VLC Player 0.8.6f and MPC 6.4.9.1. The reason for which you can't playing them is simple: WMP v9 (VC-1 Simple/Main) codec is required - info from GSpot. You need the Windows Media Format v9 runtime installed to play those.
  23. No it isn't. As linked above, ffdshow pretty much takes care of it completely. Okay, maybe you'll need filters for wrappers (mkv, ogm, etc) or Real alternatives. I find a minimal wrapper-only install of a generic pack like Ace usually takes care of those. I hate ffdshow. Don't ask why, i just hate it. KMPlayer has all i need. PS. Ace Codecs pack is the number one program for messing your registry up.
  24. 7-Zip LZMA. Period. PS. Let's get our asses to work, grab all documentation on what has been done on win9x in this forum, format it nicely and post it on the domain i mentioned above. A couple step-by-step tutorials with pictures would be very helpful too. Like what to install in what order, and what to do if something goes wrong.
  25. Well, the main idea was to ask them about that, but i don't know if anyone did this already. Anyway, the packs have readme files and such, KernelEx's "Notes" are enough documentation, what we have to do is get it all in one place, let's say, a dedicated site or a wiki page. For other undocumented packs, we have to browse around the forum for any clues and ask the authors for more docs.
