  1. We have unofficial service packs, kernel enhancements and GUI modifications. Some of them don't have proper documentation, or it's scattered all over the place. We should compile the documentation for the existing enhancements first.
  2. Try KMPlayer. It's like a cross between MPC and VLC - it's MPC with its own internal codecs, sparing you of the trouble to look for codecs, which really is a pain in 9x/me. Plays almost anything on my laptop in sig, only things it couldn't recognize were 3GP movies filmed with my cellphone, but i'm sure there are updates for that. It also has a lot of settings, allowing you to choose various filters, better video/audio quality or faster rendering speed/lower CPU usage, basically everything you will ever need.
  3. Yes. They will be rebuilt automatically if needed. The prefetch option is a nice thing, as it allows frequently used programs to load faster, but to do that they have to be loaded at some point. So they are loaded during startup, bogging down boot time. Though the difference in your case was a bit too extreme, must've been a few broken files in there.
  4. Always admin. If it's my computer, i want to have full control on everything running on it. I also use the services configuration applet a lot. Even my mom has admin privileges on her computer, and she never screwed anything up.
  5. Why do i suspect it has something to do with the Flash clock?
  6. For general use, WinRAR. For best compression, KGB Archiver, WinRK, PAQ8o, DURILCA, and other programs you never heard about.
  7. Well, you aren't very helpful. Processor overheating? Though you say it's always at the same file... By the looks of it it has to do with networking. Did you try disabling/removing the network card?
  8. We have quite some developments out already, and some of them really need more thorough documentation. Anyway, i'm pretty sure the docs about current developments should come first.
  9. Does it have an additional power connector? If it does, you need to plug the appropriate power cable in the card before you can use it.
  10. Excellent post. What we should do first from that plan of yours is creating some proper documentation. The developers themselves can write the docs, and you don't need team work to document what you did yourself. What do you say? Please ask the devs around here for more thorough documentation of their work, and we'll set it up nicely.
  11. ME is pretty functional if you know how to handle it. As for vista... oh well, don't get me started. What i'd like to see in the next windoze: Display Properties and Add/Remove programs applets back to their good old shape they had in XP The ability to choose between classic, XP-style and vista-style start menu Better compatibility Aero interface fully working (ie not reverting to basic all the time) and using up less resources Faster boot time Less indexing garbage, fewer useless services Fix the "music-slows-down-network" thing in vista.
  12. As it comes out of the box it is worse. Tweaked, it is indeed better. More stable and better underlying architecture - i used to get severe network issues in 98 on my laptop (when i used the network/internet everything would stutter, from sound to HDD activity to mouse cursor), i don't get that in ME. Basically ME is a mix of 98SE and 2000. It has two major downsides though - you can't get pure DOS in ME (there is an unofficial DOS patch but that messes other things up), so you won't be able to play all old games. And there's that stupid memory leak. ME has to be rebooted once every few days, if ran 24/7 for extended periods it'll eventually slow down to a crawl then crash. Yes.
  13. What about my problem? Not a word to tell me if it is because of my computer or what causing this? Or my new picture is not allowed to use as an avatar? As far as i see it's changed now.
  14. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be option 2.
  15. Hey, no need to be sorry. This thread isn't going anywhere, with or without your post. @ other posts above: If we're getting into corporate copyright BS already, then we won't be able to do a darn thing. I propose the following: 1. We actually start discussing useful stuff, get in touch with the developers here and ask their opinion on this. or 2. We request deletion of this thread by the mods and just leave things as they are.
  16. Why is this thread turning into spam? Copyrighted to WHO, may i ask?
  17. As far as i know Microsoft is not affiliated in any way with this forum.
  18. Didn't you realize yet that there is no project?
  19. Of course it's possible, but see Tihiy's second post in this topic.
  20. That was what i was about to say. There is a program known as XP Icon Raider, which adds XP icons to any version of windoze. I use it and it works perfectly on my ME. What it does is add a DLL and hook the system's icons to it. Perhaps you could analyze this program and make something similar? Though if a DLL is added there will still be reshacking involved.
  21. I'd go for text config files, like INI/INF files. Would be the simplest solution. How they should look depends on what you want them to do. Though you'll still have to do some sort of binary reading to get to the icons if they'll all be stored in one file. The easiest solution would be to just dump all the icons in a folder and make an INI with paths to the files so they are read into the skinning engine.
  22. Uh, Virtual PC 2007 is pretty fast on my system. Enough to use everything in 9x in very good conditions and play some old 9x-only games that don't use 3D acceleration. And you can always try VMWare.
