  1. I told you, i can take care of the server. Just let me know and i'll give you all the info you need. I've heard a lot of stuff about LLXX too, i agree that someone should contact her as well.
  2. Adobe should be blown to a million pieces for bloating Flash to the CPU hog it is today.
  3. I can take care of that. GNUWin. Alright, that sounds better than implementing the ROS shell.
  4. OK, but please READ my post. I clearly sayd "Have you considered to port", so it's not a "ROS-promotion" reply. It's more an "why don't you join open source, it's better for everyone" instead. BTW, ROS explorer it's the most similar to the original MS one, to me you can adopt an alternative shell too I read it. Yes, adopting an alternative shell for win9x would be cool, but a waste of resources imo. Everybody making litestep themes believes that we are running 640x480 on 50 inch screens (ridiculously small fonts if you didn't get what i'm saying), EcyStep by n4orcer is the only good theme i have ever seen for ls. SharpE is nice but still very buggy, blackbox just sucks, as for the other ones, i haven't tested them. But all these alternative shells have one thing in common: you can't use the desktop the way it's supposed to be used. No drag and drop. That's a MAJOR drawback for anyone who has used windoze for a long time. Don't get me wrong, i like open source software, but everybody creating alternative shells is focusing on the wrong features.
  5. Do you think M$ cares about what we do here? This forum could've been shut down a long time ago if it was so. The code that we are adding isn't all our property, indeed, but we do play an important part in the process of implementing those features. We are not making profit out of the code we adapt to 9x from XP. We are simply providing a more enjoyable computing experience to people who are stuck with these versions of windoze for some reason or another. So i don't see where the permission would be needed. Besides, if we ask for permission and M$ does not allow us, then will we stop? From my point of view it's best to just keep up with what we are doing without attracting too much unwanted attention. Ie no letters to M$.
  6. Dude, i think you're getting too annoying with this. Win95 is Win95, while ROS aims to be compatible with NT. It's a totally different beast, built for a totally different purpose. Besides, they have a long long long way to go, i tried it on a real machine a few months ago and it wouldn't even boot.
  7. Midload? No. Mediafire? Yes. A database would be a really good idea, so the installer only downloads the files it needs for that specific system, but we'd need a database operator, and maintenance of the database. Personally i think it's too risky, someone might forget updating the database when releasing something new, and possibly messing up peoples' computers. Yes, we will need localization, but first let's focus on getting everything done in English. Then translating the stuff won't be so hard. Btw Offler, you got a PM two days ago. Did you read it?
  8. Vista is like a bloated Linux distro. It won't run older windows programs properly, it won't run newer windows programs properly, and proper drivers aren't out yet. If it weren't for games i would've been running Linux all the time, as you can surf the net fast and safely and it has all the multimedia capabilities you need. XP for everything else. Besides, Vienna is coming out next year, so why bother?
  9. Uh, who uses Acrobat? Foxit Reader is all you'll ever need.
  10. Hey hey hey, hang on. You forgot me. I can help with the webserver, i am a moderator of a non-steam gaming community, and i can have a talk with our admin to give you a place in our forum. I'm also more than willing to test on several machines in real-world conditions as my systems aren't exactly stable for some reason or another, and am pretty good in making packs of stuff, doing installers and the such. My coding skills are limited but i'm learning more, and hey, i'm still in high school. I do have a pretty extensive knowledge of windoze stuff though, so for anything else but coding, you can count me in.
  11. I have just done a search on the windows folder of the SATA drive and there is no sub folder NLDR. can I copy the one from the E drive windows folder Thanks Joe The NTLDR is a FILE, and it is only visible when you select "Show All Files" and unselect "Hide Protected Operating System Files" in Folder Options. You can try copying it from your other drive, but most likely you're going to run into something else next.
  12. Opera may not be so "highly configurable" that you speak about, but it's not very configurable because it doesn't need configuring. It's simply rock solid, no matter what you do with it. Btw, it's got an integrated download manager. And you don't get to pick up viruses with it either. Those spyware toolbars have been able to get into Firefox for quite a while now, but i have yet to see one that can integrate with Opera. And you know those IM viruses spreading via web pages, right? IE picks them up right away, and some versions of Firefox are vulnerable to those exploits too. I went to one of those pages in Opera. What do you think happened? Something of the like: "The script has encountered an error and is unable to continue" displayed by the virus server. And no virus infection. Just use Opera, you'll thank me someday.
  13. If it's not the capacitors, it's probably a bad PSU (power supply unit). Power units from OEM computers are notorious to fail, since they are almost always the bare minimum to run the system so they can make it cheaper. Grab a spare power supply, plug it in, and see if the problem is still there. Also, have you checked that the CPU isn't getting too hot? It's a Cel, so it's unlikely, but not impossible.
  14. I totally agree on that. Daniel_K did what Creative couldn't do in the first place and that is fix their "broken" Vista sound drivers. Yes, but Creative only let him continue with the Audigy series. So no X-Fis under vista except Auzentech's Prelude. Why? Because the Prelude is more expensive than the regular X-Fis, so its sales would drop dramatically if the regular X-Fis would work under vista. I bet Creative has an agreement with Auzentech, coz their drivers magically work under vista, and they're coded by Creative, not by Auzentech. That's the whole reason for the X-Fis. For the Audigy cards, it was just that Creative wants people to ditch them and buy their newer products so they make more money. Heh, the story's already been around the world, and the losses for Creative will be much higher than they expected. To say the least, Extreme Overclocking Forums - 75000 members, DiGiTALZoNE board, the forum i moderate - 67000 members, MSFN - 185000 members (wow!!!), Computer Games Forum - one of the largest forums in Romania - 147000 members. And this is only 4 boards where the news were posted. Also, a number of the very active members at Extreme Overclocking (4 or 5 i think) run small computer stores, and they said they won't carry Creative cards anymore. So it's more than a couple stores doing that too. Also, have a read here and tell me what do you think: Creative accuses Asus of false advertising.
  15. No problem. You say you replaced the keyboard and it still exhibits the same issues - did you check the connection of the keyboard to the mobo? As it's a laptop, the connector might've gotten dirty.
  16. XP start menu FTW. For usability and looks. Too bad it can't be put in 98/Me too.
  17. Probably the keyboard chip's busted. Boot a mini Linux live CD like Puppy Linux or DSL, see if it exhibits the same issues. If the boot CD works fine, then it's time for a reinstall of windoze. And just put clean SP2 in, you don't need any other updates.
  18. Hmm, Windows 98 DOES have a wireless connection applet. It's quite simple too. Control Panel -> Wireless Network. After you get an IP, try pinging a site. The ping request will hang for a while then display "Unknown host". Now open up your favorite browser and hit refresh. It should work. Windows 98 doesn't handle itself very well when there are two network interfaces active, but a ping usually gets things going. If you also have a wired LAN card, try disabling that, you shouldn't have any issues then. At least that was the case for me, anyway Windows Me fixed all my problems.
  19. Also, i think you people forgot that "Arguing on the internet is like participating in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded."
  20. Check the hard drive with MHDD. Do a scan, and if it reports any sectors as uncorrectable (there will be a legend on the right side of the screen), your hard drive is busted.
  21. You need to integrate SATA drivers into your XP disc. Or better, switch SATA mode to "IDE" or "Compatible" in the BIOS, you've got to have that option in the Integrated Peripherals section.
  22. 169.x is a private address, therefore it isn't valid. My laptop gets wifi just fine on ME, got on 98 and XP too. What method do you use to connect to the wifi networks? Are you sure you didn't set any IP addresses for the wifi card?
  23. I liked the RP7 icons and want them in WinMe too, just that i can't get them to work. I tried editing the shell32.dll with Resource Hacker, put a few icons in, rebooted, nothing happened. After comparing sizes and seeing they are all okay, i copied over the shell32.dll from RP7 and rebooted. Again NOTHING. Opening my current shell32.dll in Resource Hacker shows that the RP7 icons are all there, however, they don't show up anywhere. Is there a "secret" location WinMe keeps an additional copy of its system files? System File Protection and System Restore are disabled. Edit: DOH!!! Just noticed that RP7 supports WinMe too... Another edit: RP7 didn't install properly, it said something about Rundll32.exe unable to find setupapi a few times. So no icons. I uninstalled it for now, and i think i'm going to hack the dlls manually. Now i see there are a lot of them, not just shell32.dll, but i'll do my best.
