  1. But thing is, we aren't removing bugs, we are adding features. @ specialbao1: Microsoft doesn't give a crap about what we do on 9x as they don't support it anymore. But that doesn't make it less illegal.
  2. I was saying that we have a much more delicate situation with using XP code than applying it to 9x. And btw, RP7 does break the 9x license agreement, as it installs modified system files. Or of course, RP7 does not count as a modification while what we want to implement does. I, for one, figured out all the stuff here by myself. I greatly appreciate the work the independent devs here do, and i don't need a separate project to be happy with ME on my laptop. Besides, the team here would focus on 98SE, which has a number of issues with the hardware in my lappy. And i'm referring to this post again: http://www.msfn.org/board/A-Humble-Request...802#entry750802 That's all i have to say. I don't need anything more than is available here, and if i do, i try to do it myself. About the "howto" stuff, it's the same crap as actually making a script to do all that. Just that it won't be you (the script writer) breaking the EULA, only the people that use the script.
  3. Wow. Quite a lot has been going on. To Offler: Nobody says you can't make scripts to install all M$ updates, that's what the unofficial service packs available here do. But that's pretty much ALL you can do without breaking any EULAs. See, even Tihiy's RP7 breaks some EULAs by including modified ME system DLLs into 98SE - it's not the inclusion of DLLs that breaks it if you have a ME license, it's the modifications done to them. What he does is almost reverse engineering, which is explicitly forbidden in the M$ EULA. This is the biggest problem that we hit here. As we start implementing more stuff, it gets more and more to reverse engineering than to updating. On the other hand, we are working on implementing functions on unsupported legacy software. There's no need to worry about the license agreements of win9x. But by patching code from XP DLLs, we're still breaking the XP EULA, and there's where most of the problem lies. But on the other other hand, we still haven't actually decided on who will do what, IF we will do anything. So why don't we clarify that first? And when you'll need that domain, it'll be there for you.
  4. You see, mods here have a big issue with EULAs, that's why we wanted to start a separate project. And it's not about the legal issue anyway, it's that nobody really gives a **** about a community project, so that brings us back to square one. And wots ipv6? I saw it when i first tried vista, and all i have to say about it is that it looks weird. And it'll be at least 10 years till it'll be used in Romania anyway (as is the case with high definition cable TV), so right now i just don't give a **** about it. What, don't tell me we reached the max no of ipv4 addresses already.
  5. @ Tihiy: FINALLY, someone who makes some good points. I agree 100% that the GNUWIN thing is BS, and let's say i agree on the default theme as well. But anyone can just make a pack of some s*** and claim it's the best of all updates. What we tried to start here is a community project, but as you say it's doomed from the very start. Because as you can see, everyone's having different ideas, and we do not seem to be able to agree all on one thing. I tried to give you people a place to be, it seems i was premature in my decision. And you got enough sponsors around to buy you a domain anyway... I had a post about 98SE on newer hardware around, i said pretty much everything there. I appreciate your hard work and congratulate all MSFN members for their contributions. Without you i wouldn't have ME running on my laptop so much faster than XP did. But as it seems most members here work best alone, and maybe we should leave them to do their thing. Because, you see, widespread of this project would mean more attention, which in turn could bring legal issues. And none of us want that, do we? The Immolator project is a great thing, but i think that's all we need at most. Coz if there's no challenge, where's the fun in making use of an old OS? Whatever the subject, i think you all can agree a community effort isn't possible, so we'd best leave things as they are so the mods don't start banning us. And you have to admit that this is just another "what we would do if..." thread.
  6. Good work Offler! I know the Sky98 theme, but i dunno, i feel like we need something different. Maybe create a theme based on it... Dunno. I await confirmation that things will really get moving, and maybe i'll do a theme myself.
  7. I can make installers too, and have some gfx skills, will help with that if i'm not too lazy. Also i can get some more gfx'ers to work on this, just say it if you need it. patchworks came up with a great idea with that wiki page, we're gonna need it. About the 2k/XP drivers usable on 9x, i doubt that could happen since the NT kernel is a completely different beast. We're gonna have to adapt the drivers, we can't just make them compatible. And we won't be able to use much code from ReactOS either, as the goal of ReactOS is to be compatible with the NT kernel. Project name... Hmm, we'll give it a thought. PS. thydreamwalker, please post in paragraphs, your posts are hard to understand. And what about WinME? 98 has severe network issues with my laptop, therefore i have to use ME. Ah, and i have a pretty good idea about the looks of the new win9x. I LOVE thin titlebars, so my guess is it shouldn't be XP'ish or vista'ish, but a nicely skinned 9x look. Keeping the blocky style on the buttons, we just need to redesign them and give the bars a nice sleek pattern, i think that will look nice. Base color should be the blue from the default win2k background. I'll try to show you what i mean, i'm off to wrap something up. Edit: There you go, a start button. Not that good, but i think the color theme is nice. Maybe a lil darker tho.
  8. Well, they have 5.0 installed too, but for some reason it doesn't work.
  9. The Borland 3.1 we learn at school is waaaay too outdated. For learning at home i use Bloodshed Dev-C++, seems like the best free IDE to me.
  10. I learn C++ at school (i'm in 10th grade) but it's the old borland crap, which is next to useless now. I like Python better. I also know a bit of ASM and keep learning it, but that's for a different sort of patches if you know what i mean. I'm not much of a dev anyway, i'd love to be a game dev sometime in the future, but i'm just too lazy right now. But as i said i can help with localization and testing, and i also have some gfx skills. I could get you more people working on the gfx team, there are a number of talented gfxers over at the forum i moderate.
  11. Aight, now you're talkin'. If Tihiy joins we'll be in for a good start. I can help with Romanian localization and as i said before, i can beta test on a variety of not-so-stable machines. I got a Pentium-MMX 200 running at 292MHz with 96MB RAM. a dual-PIII 667MHz with 768MB RAM (too bad win9x doesn't support SMP processing), my Portege 4010 laptop with PIII @ 933 and 496MB RAM (16MB shared video), and my main C2D rig with an E6550 @ 3.73GHz and 2GB RAM, there i can test both "in real-world" the RAM and >137GB HDD workarounds, and safely in a virtual machine. Oh, so you're the one handling LastXP? I heard lots of good things about it. I never tried it though, i'm using eXPerience's Tiny Windows releases.
  12. I know about the plague spreading thing, i experienced it since i came to this forum. Of course it's always good to share knowledge, but it's even better to have a word to say about it yourself. This is why you should stick to "i-tried-it-works-you-should-try-too" principle. Because no one will care about untested software, open-source or not. We need something that works. And even if it works, not many people will try. See the "win9x dev team" topic, i got them a domain for the project but nobody seems to care about managing it. So essentially the whole project is just a chat about "what we would do if..." stuff. I went one step further and gave them a domain with some pretty neat features. And suddenly everyone backed out. That about explains the level of seriousness they put into this project.
  13. My guess is patchworks doesn't know jack about this stuff, that's why you get no reply from him, that's why, as far as i've heard, he's been going with the "open sourcing windows 9x" thing for three years and still nothing. Sorry.
  14. Then this whole thread is f'ing pointless. I'm going back to eXPerience's 2k/XP/ sometimes even vista releases and running 98 in a virtual machine when i need it. That guy rocks, period.
  15. Well, Foxit Reader isn't exactly Notepad, but it gets close. And if you just want a quick look on a PDF, there's always a nice online viewer at http://view.samurajdata.se/ .
  16. Because all the DOS commands I know are: copy, dir, del, and format! I feel uncomfortable when I have to do something from DOS. I find out I can do all the above things in a simple way just right from Windows, something like this:- Give the registry key from RP7 a short name, then put it into drive C. - Open Autoexec.bat in Notepad, add the line "REGEDIT C:\yourfile.reg", then Save and Exit. That's all. It will take effect when I reboot Windows. I don't find your name cool or hot. I asked you just because I can easily type everyone's name, but with yours, I have to copy and paste! The_Unique looks nicer, just my own opinion. OK, thanks again for all the help and replies on this thread. I learned something new about the Autoexec.bat. I've seen it on my computer for ages but today is the first time I've done something with it. How interesting! Doh, i confused the win9x regedit command line with the 2k/xp one. Heh, you know enough basic DOS commands, but you should also learn about deltree. On 9x systems, it allows you to remove windows without reformatting. I use Opera, which has a built-in password manager. Besides, i can type pretty fast, and i'm used to typing my name after these three years.
  17. I got that... But still no word from the "officials" (Tihiy, MDGx, Xeno86), and this thread has been around for a while.
  18. Youv'd understimated the problem... BTW i soon add my finds (hoping that helps and noone will delete them). I don't get what you are saying... Anyway, if the domain is of no use, i can just cancel it. Anyway it seems we're the only ones (we = the people posted in this thread) that give a **** about this project. So what was the point of this anyway?
  19. Ahaha, batches... Don't get me started on that, two lines and you can make your computer completely unbootable. And it's not only on 9x.
  20. Are you sure you put in "savedreg.reg" (or the filename you exported your registry key to) in Autoexec.bat? Use REGEDIT /S C:\yourfile.reg Where yourfile.reg is your saved registry modification, which must reside in the root of your C drive. !!! DOS can't work with filenames larger than 8 characters, so make sure <yourfile>'s name is at most 8 characters, and has the .reg extension. !!! Why do you say it's a hair-raising experience? Working with DOS is cool. It can run a ton of classic games and can get you out of impossible situations without reinstalling windoze. Of course you can run it in windoze, but you'll get that annoying "are you sure you want to add blah blah" prompt every time you start up your computer... About my name, dunno, it's been like that for a few years. Thought it looks cool.
  21. Aw c'mon people... I got you a domain, now WHERE IS EVERYBODY???
  22. I PM'ed our board's admin about the server. Let's see what he can do for us. Edit: I got our domain. HTTP: http://win9xdev.digitalpowered.info FTP: ftp://www.digitalpowered.info/ FTP Username: <protected> (PM for details) FTP Password: <protected> PhpMyAdmin: https://p3smysqladmin01.secureserver.net/p41/13 SQL Database: <protected> SQL Username: <protected> SQL Password: <protected> SQL Host: p41mysql13.secureserver.net (not localhost!) The features: Bandwidth: 50,000 MB Diskspace: 1,000 MB MySQL: 1 Database Operating System: Linux Server IP Address: 68.178.254.122 People who wish to manage the server and start installing stuff on it please PM me and i'll give you the login details.
  23. I'm coding for phpBB2 and 3, and for a CMS that work with both, so if I can be any help just ask. ****, we're running IPB over there (like it is here too). I personally don't really like phpBB either. But anyway, nothing's decided yet, and were we talking about a "dev team"? Where are all the important members' opinions? So what exactly do you want running on that server? So i can tell you if it's doable or not.
  24. I don't think they can be locked in win9x. You can always make your computer apply it automatically at startup though.
