  1. Psst. You really outta read this: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=18408 and if you expect any kind of constructive answer, screaming "WHY ___ NOT WORKING" provides very little information about the problem. First Calm Down take notes about what isn't working take note of any error messages take note of what version of win7 are you running (build #) construct your notes in an informative reply and you have a much better chance of getting useful information I will move your thread to the windows 7 Forum (Application Installs is mostly for Unattended type install info)
  2. Ok its not IE7/8 install causing it its something in office 2007 causing the problem (it dies there everytime) I switched to the RunWPI_Zune.exe launch method and the problem seems to have disappeared though. BTW: http://www.wpiw.net/The_Dark_Side/files.html has a broken link the upper left image links to http://downloads/WPI_v7.6.0.rar
  3. I adopted a network a few years ago that sounds like it had a lot in common with yours. several WSUS servers specified on the clients (but none of the servers still there) so AU was effectively broken on about 50% of the PCs the other 50% were grabbibg updates from MS directly(if the user had admin). At the time this was a non-ad (broken novel) environment and most of the time i didnt even have admin rights on PCs unless the users were given admin rights(i carried a password crack CD with me for about a year) these days, were about 90% AD with about 95% of those reporting correctly to WSUS and i so far havent found a pc that i cant fix with my set of hacked together bat files (given the time). Ive already added this tool to my utilities folder and plan to use it. Im eager to try it using the installer and command line switches (id like to be able to execute 1 exe file remotely using psexec)

  5. OK Virtualbox is trying my patience with its erratic networking (but its on Win 7RCso i forgive it) but long story short, the VM is having issues accessing the network and without copy/paste the data is sorta 'stuck' inside the VM. so a screenshot of monitor 2 will have to do: the code from config.js is this: prog[pn]=['Microsoft Office 2007']; uid[pn]=['OFFICE2007']; desc[pn]=['Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 (Patches current as of 07/23/2009)']; ordr[pn]=[25]; dflt[pn]=['yes']; forc[pn]=['no']; bit64[pn]=['no']; cat[pn]=['Applications']; cmds[pn]=['"%wpipath%\\Install\\O2K7\\setup.exe"']; pn++; prog[pn]=['Office 2007 Save as PDF Plugin']; uid[pn]=['OFFICE2007SAVEASPDFPLUGIN']; desc[pn]=['Install Office 2007 Save as PDF Plugin (Requires Microsoft Office 2007 to be checked)']; ordr[pn]=[26]; dflt[pn]=['no']; forc[pn]=['no']; bit64[pn]=['no']; cat[pn]=['Staff']; cmds[pn]=['"%wpipath%\\Install\\SaveAsPDFandXPS.exe" /Q']; deps[pn]=['OFFICE2007']; pn++; MSOffice 2007 installs successfully but in looking at the log file, i may have located the issue and if im right, its a PEBKAC error. earlier in the install, IE7/8 is installed (depending on whats selected) which could cause mshta to act funny. On monday ill modify the installation order and shuffle them to the very last.
  6. no dice. any ideas? the funny part is after i hit ok WPI closes, mshta.exe is still there and installations are still processed but i get no visual indications from WPI v7.6.1 btw
  7. thanks fo the info. Ill add those keys prior to WPIW and seeif it corrects the issue. as for the other issues theyre mostly just things i was curious about. they arent breaking anything the way they are but if i get the main issue solved, i can star using the CD
  8. ok this doesnt make sense. i just added WPIW to my Install DVD and i used the "Post OEM" method to fire it after first install. I did a clean install inside virtualbox and after the first login WPIW stars, i select my apps and click 'begin install' and WPIW closes without doing anything. so i go to DVD:\WPI\wpi.hta and reopen it and i get the mesage about a previous installation and if i hit ok everything continues just fine. WTH? also a few questions: while installing, WPI says 'Command 1' when running an item -is there anyway to customize this text? (example "importing registry settings", "Executing installer" etc) I saw the options for changing screen resolution but dont want the script changing the resolution if its already 800*600 or greater. is there a way to make WPI only change the resolution if its below 800*600?
  9. what gamehead said but FYI if your on the machine and need to abort the shutdown during the countdown just open a command prompt and type 'shutdown -a'
  10. There are only about 3 types of discs of Vista available(6 if you count the x64 flavors). each disc contains all editions. The key used during installation determines what features are installed. Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and Vista Ultimate OEM Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and Vista Ultimate Retail Vista Enterprise (works similar to XP Pro Corp with activation) If you want you upgrade from Vista Business --> Vista Ultimate your need a Vista Ultimate KEY not a Vista Ultimate DISC. look into Vista Anytime Upgrade to upgrade your current installation to Vista Ultimate.
  11. I barely noticed it at all after letting it through the WSUS. I had to calle because people were concerned about the 'setting up outlook for first use' message but didnt even associate those calls with SP2 until i had done my own desktop.
  12. try these for your phone (youll still need Motorola Phone Tools or another suite to do any with the device) http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/US...set_USB_Driver/ and these for your webcam (they are listed under the XPS 1730 Downloads) http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...p;fileid=214676 the installer even makes no mention of your laptop (closest is the 1520) but the Hardware ID (Vid_05a9&Pid_2640) is in C:\dell\drivers\R160323\CTDriver\Oem002\OEM02Dev.inf once you extract the drivers. If the installer fails to install the webcam, try point it at that file using the "Update Driver/Found New Hardware" wizard.
  13. just use http://www.recuva.com/ or http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html -both free. but dont trust ANY software to recover system files. only use recovery software to recover your documents/pictures/etc. if you delete system files and recover them, the system is no longer reliable IMO.
  14. i think you might be a little overly paranoid here. http://gizmodo.com/5310406/giz-explains-wh...oogle-chrome-os
  15. I set the following in a GPo so youll wanna check these in rsop.msc Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->System Services Terminal Services (Startup Mode: Automatic) Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Restricted Groups Group = USER/GROUP_YOU_WANT_TO_GRANT_ACCESS_REMOTELY Member of=BUILTIN\Remote Desktop Users Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components/Terminal Services Allow users to connect remotely using Terminal Services->Enabled
  16. i didnt see his cpu temp quoted anywhere but for the record my Q6600 temps are 40c-50c and ripken is right, opening it up and cleaning it out is prolly a good idea even if its not the root cause of the problem.
  17. Not really. the thing could run at 100c degrees and as long as it doesnt melt down, i couldnt care less what the temp is. This card has been by far the best video card I have ever owned and ive owned a LOT of video cards (my first 'accerated' card was the Voodoo 2 if that gives you an idea of how long ive been buying 3d cards) With this card Ive broken free of the new-video-card-every-6 months that ive become accustomed to. Ive played Fo3, AC, Bioshock, UT3, LEGO Batman, L4D, Portal, and others i cant even remember and my 8800 which i bought in Dec of 2007 hasnt given me any issues despite its seemingly high temperature.
  18. im not too sure that the 70degree temps hes seeing on his 8400 GS aren't typical. i get similar temps on my 8800 GT which is admittedly a different card my 8800 GT in an Antec Sonata: after about 10 minutes in L4D: BTW i tried the program from the other screenshots but it crashes with 'unknown architecture'
  19. it renders fine in FF3.5 here. do you have any extentions that might affect rendering?
  20. In my experience its inconsistent. its enalbed on some PCs and disabled on others. I have a GPo that enables them (and starts necessary services) Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->System Services-> Net Logon (Startup Mode: Automatic) Remote Registry (Startup Mode: Automatic) Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) (Startup Mode: Disabled) Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Default Shares-> Default Server Admin Shares Enabled Default Workstation Admin Shares Enabled edit: thata should be in the computer branch as well. (im just looking in my active directory GPo so it may be different on 7 )
  21. check these in GPedit: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Default Shares-> Default Server Admin Shares Enabled Default Workstation Admin Shares Enabled there are registry keys too but i dont recall them
  22. Just a quick count shows we have 2 admins, 13 smods, and 24 mods. I personally review almost every reply or new topic (especially from new members) evenings and weekends that doesnt already have a moderator present. even during those times im usually beaten to a by another mod at least once a week. usually we I see a spammer and im lucky if i can get him banned and cleaned up after before another mod bans them. I think were have enough moderators.
