  1. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - The Day the World Went Away -got it stuck in my head from the new Terminator Salvation Trailer but i think im revisiting the the entire album tonite /good topic to resurrect
  2. assuming you got XPize from an official source it is clean. though I dont advocate running without antivirus, it used to be that norton was at least 'better than nothing' sadly, not even that is true. for i now have conclusive proof that running no antivirus is better than running norton antivirus, not only that is posting a sign on your case stating 'keep out' is also proven to be more effective than norton no but seriously norton is crap. it falsely detects a lot of legit utilities as viruses: hijackthis, ipscan, and apparently now xpize. its as if no one verifies anything submitted as viruses before they turn the report into a definition. A typical conversation at Nortons labs: "Hey boss I found a whole bunch of exe files on this infected system!" "Do they say Microsoft or Norton on them?" "No. what should we do?" "Push them out in the next definition update! those kind of files are dangerous!" P.S. if anyone at Norton is reading this: did you know that 100% of infected windows systems contain the file explorer.exe? Its true. you should add that to your def updates too.
  3. if MS wont support your stolen product why should we? http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=18408 you'll need OEM media from your OEM to do a full clean install. further discussions about warez will result in a ban.
  4. not really. its still a task to get vista to prompt for escalation most of the time. id just leave him as an administrator anyways and use reduced permissions for the most likely infection point (ie: IE) http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2006/04/r...-in-secure.html the other option would be to build your own fake password prompt but thats only useful in a pretty specific scenario i use this in a library where we have a old crappy program that demands admin privileges to run properly user starts a shortcut for a .bat .bat prompts for a fake 'admin' password which is stored in plain text in the bat(which i nearly worthless if they get a hold of it). if correct the .bat fires runasspc which allows me to encrypt the real admin password in a locally stored file. runasspc is in my case locked to a specific .exe but you can use it without that restriction. again i wouldnt recommend this method unless you have a very specific function that needs to be elevated.

  6. if it were me doing it id just toss the theme in CD:\\$OEM$\$$\Resources\Themes then add this to you \I386\WINNT.sif [Shell] CustomDefaultThemeFile = "%WinDir%\Resources\Themes\nameof.Theme" you'll also need this in your WINNT.sif so the theme gets copied. [Unattended] OemPreinstall=Yes
  7. [citation needed] but seriously less patches != better OS.
  8. Im sure this will make the minimalists with the classic start menu eyes bleed but this is my start menu in Vista: obviously as far as my Start menu prefs are concerned, less is definitely not more. MORE is MORE.
  9. Dude the TI99 was sweet. it was the first computer i actually owned. I had space invaders, Extended BASIC and the Voice Modulator(which basically made it a glorified speak and spell with a learning curve) Ah. good times. /yeah thats me im the guy hijacking a Windows 7 thread to talk about a computer from 1979
  10. If this was really that big of an issue i think someone would code a new 3rd party start menu (similar to vistart -the Vista start menu clone for XP but in reverse) and i realize those of you with 512mb of ram that wanted to run 7 are already thinking "OMG that would bloat teh sevenz even worser!!!" but IMO, MS has tried to appease the crowd that clings to a stripped down OS and found out that even with those features left in the OS but deactivated by default that same crowd just downgraded to XP (even to the point where people actually pay MORE for their OEM to install an outdated OS ) there is simply no money (for MS) in catering to the stripped down OS crowd. If it has a legitimate need (security/cross compatibility) to be deactivated and reverted to its previous functionality, then it should be left in. but in this case, its really time for the 'classic mode' to go.
  11. we have a forum for that http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=157

  13. from what ive seen from searching it gone in 7 you might try Select All from: http://www.crashcoursesoftware.com/index.html its says 200/XP but it worked in Vista for me just now so it might just work in 7 too.
  14. yes i think we all love linux here at MSFN but we dont just go yelling it out in random threads that have nothing to with linux.
  15. yeah i think battery life is the biggest improvement over the pdaphone i had a few years ago (the PPC6600) i had an 65$ aftermarket battery that would get me 6 hours battery life if i rationed it properly. when i saw that the Epix said "7 hours talk" i was very skeptical but with light use, ive gone days without charging which i could do with my previous PDA even if it was in standby the whole time. with normal-heavy use I can still get through my day without a low battery warning. I almost ended up getting a HTC Fuze but I didnt think id find a case that would fit the back panel well (and it was 100$ more than the Epix which was already 100$ more than i had at the time)
  16. Just wondering how many members around here have Windows on their PDA/Phone as well as their PC. I just recently upgraded to a Samsung Epix.
  17. ive never used the thermal Adhesive (though ive heard of people using it on GPUs where the fan assembly hangs from the card) but the thermal compound does form a pretty tight bond but nothing a slight 1-2 degree twist wont break
  18. this should do the trick [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop] "NoChangingWallpaper"=dword:00000001 i assume you already have these 2: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "NoDispBackgroundPage"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoThemesTab"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] DisableRegistryTools=dword:00000001 if the 'set as wallpaper thing still works you can try setting the wallpaper using IE then denying write access to the file to the user (be sure to leave write turned on for another user) C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp if i remember right it gives the good ol' "Access Denied" dialog when they try to set a wallpaper as for your logging in/out dilemma, just create 2 .reg files and save them somewhere the user doesnt know about (pen drive or network drive but you can hide them in the windows folder if you have to ) locksoff.reg Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop] "NoChangingWallpaper"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "NoDispBackgroundPage"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoThemesTab"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] DisableRegistryTools=dword:00000000 make your changes and then run: lockson.reg Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop] "NoChangingWallpaper"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] "NoDispBackgroundPage"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoThemesTab"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System] DisableRegistryTools=dword:00000001 if these are public access computers SteadyState (free) will save you a ton of time or if your place has a budget and/or a lot of PCs to manage i recommend Deepfreeze itll make you machines just about userproof. if they screw anything up just reboot 'em and its fixed (Deepfreeze Enterprise will even let you reboot remotely -really p***es 'em off but its so much fun)
  19. sure np. if you need any help finding the correct drivers, try to find the model # of your acer and well help you find them.
  20. http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm has never let me down. its cheap too
  21. you probably right that you are just missing drivers but without knowing more about your PC, we cant tell you what drivers to use. if your pc is from an OEM (Dell, HP, Gateway, Acer, etc) you can usually find drivers under the support section of that companies website if you dont have a disc that came with the pc with the drivers already on it. if its a homebuilt PC, then unless you know the manufacturer and model of all the components, youll have to use something like this to get a snapshot of the system: http://www.halfdone.com/ukd/ (use a pen drive or other removable media to get it to the machine)
  22. the type of activation that is being performed when you install on the system this installation was designed for is called an OEMBIOS activation which means of course that its tied to the bios of that machine type. OEM licenses are not transferable from one machine to the next. If you discuss circumventing that on these forums, you are in violation of Rule 1. I understand that you probably didnt know that before posting so im just gonna close this topic and we wont have anymore discussions on circumventing the OEM EULA.
  23. that might be a little drastic IMO. you know that nlite is just a GUI used to manipulate the XP source. most of the things it can do can be done manually.
