  1. Im gonna have to disagree on that point -BSODs are usually a 50/50 hardware/software mix Id recommend checking out the eventlog / minidump files first but the thing to keep in mind here is windows will BSOD occasionally 'out of the blue' if it does it once, just ignore it. If it happens again, backup your stuff, run viruscans/check logs, etc. if it becomes an every day/week event, then its time to reinstall.
  2. this would prolly due the trick: http://lifehacker.com/software/featured-wi...lick-306704.php ive seen tons of these things before so you if that doesnt work for you, we can prolly find another
  3. I recently had 3 of these dropped off at my office (a number cruncher with the word 'director' in her title thought that because the sales people were knowledgeable, she didn't need to ask IT before purchasing equipment) http://www.kis-kiosk.com/standard-thinman.html of course they had no software with them except the windows xp install by dell on the dimension 620 bolted into them and the company pointed me at sitekiosk. so i checked into that and found out my budget for this project was exactly zero dollars and zero cents. YAY! locked system down with GP editor set autologin for default user and demoted user to lowest possible level http://www.deepfreeze.com/ (already had this) ubuntu server + apt-get install dansguardian (already had this) firefox pointed at proxy server https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1659 firefox in startup group notes: I got lucky and the included kiosk keyboard had no F keys or windows keys so i didnt have to lock them out to keep a user from hitting alt+f4, WIN+D (but even if they did they just get a blank desktop) user can still hit Ctrl+Esc to display start menu (but the only options are restart/logoff) -left that enabled on purpose so i can logout and log in to my admin account locally to update things like flash player / adobe pdf and the like
  4. http://robotronic.de/runasspc/ creates a cryptfile that store your password for the included runas utility (cryptfile is only good for the running the exe it was created for)
  5. I've gotten ink from these guys before http://www.supermediastore.com/inktoner.html pretty cheap but I only ordered there because I was buying 300 DVD cases and 300 DVDRs on the same order
  6. Those 2 things should not be related at all (memory upgrade & DVD drive issues) I can't give you a 100% fix on this type of issue but there are a few things you might try: downgrade your ram back to its previous state and if the problem goes away then the 2 issues are related and then we need to maybe see if you motherboard can even support that type/amount of memory and look into a possible BIOS update. try the drive in another pc and see if it works there. (prolly upgrade the firmware while its in there if we can -couldnt hurt)
  7. Incorrect - a stop 0xD1 is almost always a driver issue, as seen above. my bad. I was just going off the top of my head
  8. the drive was likely manufactured by samsung and then rebranded. thats pretty common practice for samsung/toshiba. As for why/how the firmware got damaged, I cant really give you any information on why it happens but if its shos up incorrectly in the bios, I know you wont be able to fix that with a driver update. the firmware on your cd drive may be just fine but somehow incompatible with your particular hardware combination. come to think of it, flashing your drives bios on that machine could be a very bad idea given its stability issues (dont want it rebooting in those critical 5-10 seconds when the flash is occurring) I would recommend flashing on another PC. Oh, and this may just be superstition on my part but i never flash a cd/dvd drive with a second drive connected. i just dont trust the flash util to find the right drive. one last thought, if you cant fix the drive, does removing it fix your stability issues?
  9. my guess would be the firmware on your dvd drive is corrupted/incompatible/wonky My guestimate is you have a Samsung SD-616T http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=171 if the drive is a different model # then try searching for it on this page http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php if the utility wont find your drive in windows, you may have to put the flash utility and firmware on a floppy and flash in DOS but it should find the drive inside windows even without drivers being installed.
  10. youd be surprised what VMware can do Oblivion/FEAR/Test drive unlimited: UT2004(tiny 2v2 map but it works): NFS hot pursuit 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbrI6OPVbXs you can also use WINE in Linux for WOW (the spam/farmbot people usually run 5-10 of them on the same PC)
  11. I see your starwars telnet and raise you a ZOMBO.COM http://www.zombo.com/
  12. you could use VMware and/or Virtual PC but you would need a second license of the OS because they emulate the entire OS. what is it you are trying to do?
  13. Those are errors are never fun really you have 3 choices: load the debugging tools and see if the minidump left any clues (thats a longshot) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315263 these type of errors are almost always a hardware issue. If you've recently added hardware, remove it. Have hardware in you system that has really old or uncertified drivers, try updating the drivers or removing the device (if it cant be removed but the system will function without it, disable it in the device manager) If you have you CPU or GPU overclocked, undo that download a liveCD OS to test the system (ubuntu has memtest86 on the liveCD) [*]reload windows (not recommended because it is more likely to be a hardware problem) If you have an extra hard drive with at 5-10 GB space, you might remove your current drive and install a fresh(temporary) version of windows to it to see if the problem goes away
  14. http://www.wampserver.com/en/ just install then just put all your sites files (or the ones your working on) in c:\wamp\www WAMP stands for Windows Apache HTTP Server MySQL PHP5 there are tons of *amp distros out there http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_WAMPs you say you wanted to test out forums and such. if your still deciding what software to use check to see if your webhost has a service called "Fantastico" it can auto install a lot of forum software directly to your server without you ever having to download&reupload it there is also http://www.opensourcecms.com/ for test driving forum software.
  15. ok i was thinking of the tablet/mce one that was basically blue luna with added shiny but your talking about the default XPize theme: http://pgase.deviantart.com/art/Luna-Royale-40772637 but that one kills the start picture and username entirely Royale Noir might work out too http://www.istartedsomething.com/20061029/royale-noir/ but i remember having shellstyle problems with it
  16. I second to that. Sorry but blue bars = bad in my book. Luna ruined Blue for me. I used the Zune theme forever for just that reason (plus its my schools colors orange/black) but now Im using one called RoyalFour (BlackBlue or Orange Scheme) but the Black graphite in that theme would look good with darkside. But im not a big fan of its start menu (no userpic + lame top graphic)
  17. I just updated the list to include some other fixes from this page http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?showtopic=97 (found via http://www.msfn.org/board/office_2007_upda...ml&p=659260 ) I added a category for hotfixes (cat ID 2) a lot are redundant http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924884 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931766 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934655 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936558 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937833 Which are all updates to Outlook 2007 Junk E-mail Filter (Previously included in this update list as http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936644 which I Replaced with October 07 version http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942575 ) There was an update for Sharepoint on their list but i couldn't locate a download and I dont use Sharepoint so... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937832 They also listed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936056 which is already covered by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936960 which was already on this list when I downloaded it so i left out 936056 jcarle, is there any chance of updating WUD to extract the *.msp files from the updates after downloading? (Not that WUD isnt awesome already that would just make it awesome+1 ) office_2007_x86_enu.zip
