source of article is 'Marius Oiaga' - news writer the author behind great articles like Forget about the WGA! 20+ Windows Vista Features and Services Harvest User Data for Microsoft and Microsoft Updates the Default Spy Tool in Vista SP1 and lets not forget Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard = Windows Vista ok lets forget the source of the article an look at the content: article says MS needs to learn from Apple. article is critical of Microsoft who has 98% of the PC market article praises Apple who has 2% of the market Um yeah Microsoft is definitely doing something wrong there. Gates and Balmer need to don the black turtlenecks, blue jeans and tennis shoes, Give Dell, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Gateway, and IBM all pink slips and start cranking out overpriced hardware with their OS preinstalled. Yeah thatll work out real well.

talk about overkill. do you use dynamite for swatting flies too? you should douse the HD in kerosene, light it on fire and drill a few holes through it to make sure you get Vista off entirely. sheesh the XP disc would have formatted the hard disc just fine (assuming you load the proper drivers first) you may be able change the hd controller mode to IDE or ive seen 'OS Install Mode' on some (the process varies on every bios but its not in every one) the most foolproof method though is goto http://driverpacks.net/DriverPacks/ and download Driverpacks BASE and MassStorage and integrate them to your CD and reburn.

Yes Win7 is slated for 2009-2010 but MS said the would be returning to their old way of releasing a new version every few years. However no one will force you to upgrade. Vista will be supported until 2012 (extended support until 2017). thats what your are paying for. but if you paid 300$ im guessing you bought Ultimate -which is a massive waste of money. most of the extras in ultimate can be easily replaced by cheap or free 3rd party software. for more info about lifecycle dates you can check this link: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselectwin I'm one of the people that thinks XP should have been shelved about a year after SP2. A return to the 3 year release cycle will be a good thing in the long run. XP got stale to me and consumer level PC users got too comfortable with it and cant give it up now. edit: i see where you said you bought ultimate now. IMO, its still a waste of money. i would have gone with home prem or business/enterprise

I have seen many post on various tech sites (usually on the Windows XP end of sales articles) that allege that Windows Vista is 'incompatible' with hardware/software. Ive been running Vista since shortly after RTM and havent seen anything id classify as an 'incompatibility' in a long time. which left me wondering, what software is actually incompatible with Vista? Ok first some ground rules: If you want to list an incompatibility, you must have been the person who witnessed it. (no friend of a friend told me program X doesn't work) It must have worked with XP. Must have been tested with the most recent version of the software. If the Hardware/Software was not 'on the shelf' at the time Vista RTMed, then Im not counting it (the only exception is if its a Microsoft Hardware/Software Product -Example: Win2k cant share files with Vista -of course it can thats just an example) Use some common sense. -if you are attempting to connect Vista via ICS to share a HP deskjet 540c printer via a 50 foot adhoc wireless connection to a 10 year old win2k machine, Vista isnt the weak link there.

i think hes saying manually edit the lastsession.ini file to remove any changes if problems arise. but i dont think they will.

MS cant really crack down on 'casual piracy' (a person buys 1 copy and installs on 5 of their own PCs) I think the reasons why are even though some people (mostly slashdotters) would have you believe MS is an evil greedy corporation, they have not stooped to the RIAA/MPAAs level and started suing little old ladies on welfare for pirating their product. even if they did sue EVERYONE that pirated windows, thats very bad press. WGA can help curb casual piracy a little but IMO this isnt what WGA was designed for. However, if Microsoft can locate a merchant who is SELLING pirated copies of Windows, they can sue the heck out of them and nobody cares because at that merchant was stealing from MS at the expense of their customers. all it takes for a merchant to get caught is 1 person that bought their PC from said merchant to run WGA, have it fail, and call MS (prolly takes more than 1 complaint but you know what im getting at)

hah. i read that backwards as "145 final Last Session K.O. for 146?" and though you posted something about boxing records in the nlite forum. i clicked through to move to gen discussion and had to re-read the title. but to answer you question, no there shouldnt be any side effects nLite changelog

there isnt an option for 'i like both but have no rhythm and know better than to try playing either'

what speed did you burn the disc at? discs burned at high speeds = more prone to errors = longer install time as for sp1 + vlite i cant say wheter it would cause that behavior or not as i havent used that feature.

sorry im still not seeing it. unless a MS employee came into your house and ripped the ethernet cable out of the back of your 98 machine, that road upgrade analogy isnt working form me. My apologies to the OP. You started this thread to talk about 98 but the conversation just refuses to go in that direction.

I can tell you've never done any major work on a GM vehicle thats older than 5 years there I fixed that for you. any further debates about things I choose to moderate WILL be addressed via PM. I am just enforcing the rules and will not be 'called out' every time I do.

Drivers come a LOT into play here. With good drivers on quality hardware, both XP and 2003 are plenty stable for 99% of tasks. It's not like one needs five 9's of uptime on their desktop. very true. my experience with 2003 is 'limited' to high end workstation class Servers and rack mounted servers (multi CPU, ECC Ram, etc) designed with the windows server line in mind. I dont recall using 2003 on a standard PC so their may be some problems there i havent seen before. -
need to reinstall xp with a dell disc on an hp computer
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to hmunster123's topic in Windows XP
no if its a dell OEM disc its only licensed for use on dell PCs. if your HP shipped with XP, they are the only ones that can provide you with a cd for that license. -
do they show in disk management? (rightclick my computer->Manage->disk management)

ok first off, LLXX was banned in early 2007. LET IT GO. secondly, namecalling is one of the many reasons why they are no longer with us. as for your question about stability, 2003 is the most stable platform MS has ever built. If your hardware is up to it. -
Release to Manufacturer. Plain old 'what came on the first CD' source. no patches or service packs
-
no. you would need OEM media. Retail media wont accept the key. additionally, the OS will need to be activated and if installed from OEM media you cant do that over the internet. (you'll have to call) there are threads on this forum about backing up the activation data and restoring it after a fresh install though. after you get OEM media i would take a look at those threads.

yes you can install the 64 bit version even if the 32 version has been installed before. as long as only 1 version is installed at a time, you will be within what the eula allows. if you dual boot both on the same system, you might fall into a gray area in the EULA that im unsure about but i know you can switch back in forth as much as you need.
-
nope. you dont need another license. if you have the ultimate DVD the 64 bit version is on the disc or you can get media here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/...ions/64bit.mspx BTW, i love the verbiage on that site: Talk to your doctor about 64bit before making the switch. If you experience lockups lasting more than 4 hours, application compatibility or experience other hardware incompatibilities seek medical advice immediately.

I agree. Vista isnt the problem its the people they have installing it for them. MS caved to the OEMs (Dell, HP, etc) pressure that wanted to build a sub 500$ PC so they reduced their minimum system requirements to laughably low levels. (Yes I know I just opened myself of your a quip from a 98er about how they run Win 98 on their abacus but please try to control yourselves.) Also the comparison of Apple to Microsoft is an apples to oranges comparison. Apple makes Hardware (well actually relabels other peoples hardware with their name but I wont get into that) that hardware happens to run software which they produce. therefore they are a hardware company that happens to make software. Microsoft on the other hand is a Software company that happens to make some hardware (but not PCs) the 2 just arent made to be compared. they are both evil in their own special ways. Releasing a new product every few years is not that big of a deal people. Are you going to go protest GM/Ford/Chrysler when the 2009 year model comes out when the 2008s have only been out for a year? Are you going to whine that the NFL/NBA/NHL etc because they are playing the same game theyve played for the last 30+ years? Are you gonna get mad when the theaters stop showing the movies youve seen and start playing another movie that youll have to pay to see?

that case looks like its solid (at least the metal parts) but I vote no on on the 80mm fan the 120s provide much better airflow at lower rpms and are therefore quieter. that case also uses the noiser plastic drive rails that usually rattle instead of isolating the noise. as for the board, i cant fault it on anything other that the brand name. many people will tell you gigabyte makes awesome boards. I have never owned one of their good ones apparently im sort of an Asus person (will use Abit too if needed) this one is comparable in price/features to yours: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...anufacture=ASUS Edit: also for video cards EVGA has a step up program that allows you to swap out you card for a higher model if you need to in the first 90 days. just something to consider.
