In my opinion, thats your problem right there. "Simple File Sharing" is rarely simple at all.

yeah antec has some in the sonata series without the door but unfortunately, they must know that because they cost more also available in black -just not at the OPs store
-
yeah I dont go for the cases with the fancy lights and windows and such. take the money youd spend on that and apply it to a good monitor. thats the part you look at. if your spending enough time looking at the case to justify the lights and windows, you prolly built it wrong that said, if you want to spend that amount on a case go with the Antec Sonata I have a Sonata I and a Sonata III and if Antec stops making them I will buy a few an store them until i need them. it doesnt sound like the deck of an aircraft carrier and it has real metal drive mounting trays with rubber grommets that cut hard drive noise instead of cheap plastic drive rails that rattle around and create more noise. Plus it includes a 500 watt PSU that you can either keep as a backup and get the one you linked or use it instead and save some $$

if the picture doesnt help just look at just about any Dell GX260 motherboard ever made.

Agreed. thats very similar to my thoughts on Vista. Luna/Aero is just the supermodel standing next to the car you are thinking of buying. Aero is just a feature for mom and dad/grandma and grandpa to play with on the best buy showroom floor so they can feel like their new pc is capable of doing something more than their old one. If MS had taken the XP source and eliminated EVERY SINGLE BUG, added new 'under the hood' features, fine tuned the performance to perfection, but left Luna as the UI, mom and dad/grandma and grandpa would look at the new PCs on the showroom floor and think 'Hmm that looks just like my old one. Im not paying 500$ for that.' There is much more money to be made from ignorant consumers than there is from educated consumers. Microsoft knows this and will always build in some stupid feature into every new OS that an ignorant customer can see. (2k/ME had new icons, XP had Luna, Vista has Aero, Office 2007 got a big button) These are features that anyone can use but are not included for our demographic. our demographic is more interested in what types of programs an OS will run, what hardware architectures it will run on, maximum amounts of memory it'll handle, etc.

Thread Culled. pointless arguing moved Here (not recommended reading but left intact for this threads context)
-
this thread was split from this thread it is an argument between 2 members that devolved to name calling and was split from the thread in an effort to save an otherwise constructive discussion. i would like to take this oppurtunity to remind everyone of Rule 7b: http://www.msfn.org/board/Forum-Rules-Upda...ead-t18408.html

Ignoring a symptom of a problem wont make it go away. If part your OS refuses to function properly and you dont know why and dont care why then youre just opening yourself up to potential problems down the road. Would you ignoring it if your leg stopped working just because you werent planning on getting out of the chair for a while?

This one goes to 11: Its not XP (XP is starting to feel more and more like it was pieced together from spare parts lying around the MS junkyard) The new file copy dialog (even though i use teracopy) The new audio mixer (why was this not in 2k/XP?) File-open/Browse dialogs don't assume everyone is running at 640*480 The renaming of random things that occurs in every OS upgrade makes sense this time. MS finally decided to remove "My " from the beginning of everything, "Documents and Settings" is now "Users", etc. (However the "Network and Sharing Center" sounds like a kindergarten teacher came up with it) Breadcrumb menu in explorer Open file location on shortcuts (saves 1 click and can be done in 2k/XP but nice to have it by default) F2 rename doesnt select extension, new shortcuts/file copies are suffixed instead of prefixed System tray clock/calendar popup (systray seems smarter about what is active/inactive too) WIM Imaging Much improved icon support (but still has a way to go IMO)

thanks everyone. ive been to busy to even notice the thread.

Keylogger virus?
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to cookiemonster[MoA]'s topic in Malware Prevention and Security
ok first off, Norton sucks. BAD. I've swapped many people from Norton to AVG Free/Mcafee Enterprise and had the resident scanner go off immediately after installing. This is on machines that Norton reports as virus free. the best recommendation i can give you is to download HijackThis! and run it (which BTW Norton may delete because it defines it as a 'Potentially Unwanted Program' in most versions) it will not tell you what is bad on your system and it will scan all the common places crap likes to hide and let you delete them if needed. it will output a log file which you can post here and help everyone see what is running on your system and we can give recommendations. But really i'd say your ISP is just trying to put the blame on your PC. If you had a keylogger on your PC your password would just get stolen again the next time you logged in. If your account hasnt been compromised again after a week of logging in on a machine that supposedly has a keylogger, you either havent been using it or the attacker has better targets. people talk to their ISP and think that somehow the ISp will 'scare them off' by updating the account info. If the attacker thought the ISP could harm them they wouldnt be attacking its customers. Most ISPs have very low security on their email servers and IMO its far more likely that your password was guessed as a result of a random dictionary attack on the server itself. is your username/password a name/dictionary word? if so, id say its far more likely your PC wasnt involved in the attack. If your username is something common (janesmith) and your password is 'password' then i doubt it was a keylogger. but if your password is something like p@a$$W0rD8675309 then its more likely the password was acquired from your computer. either way, please ditch norton (AVG Free edition is good but there are others that are free too) and run hijackthis to get a better idea of what going on on your system -
Personally id just change the password offline http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html grab the ISO version(3mb), burn to a disc, bot to the disk, follow the onscreen instructions. it aint pretty but its saved my butt on xp/2k hundreds of times. itll work on vista too

My first guess would be drivers. auto updates doesnt always offer the latest drivers. Id try to d/l them from your OEM/manufaturer

Ideas for better/future computing.
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to PeaceByJesus's topic in Windows Tips 'n' Tweaks
Microsoft Sync (Windows mobile for Cars basically) -I was looking at getting a ford focus with it and see if i could get BSOD as a custom plate not exactly what you asked for but take a look at Taskbar Shuffle it help keep the taskbar a little easier to organize (works with systray icons too) the breadcrumb menu is better than the up button IMO. I missed the Up button at first too but now when i get on a XP/2003 box i miss having the breadcrumb menu -
Microsoft Office Professional 2007
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Peter Swain's topic in Microsoft Office
yeah 2003-2007 compatibility is much better than people think it is. every document ive opened that was authored on 2003 has opened flawlessly in 2007. The few times ive had to save a 2003 version of a file with 2007 it always opens fine when i open it with 2003. -
New Member w/ Nero 6 OEM: Should I buy Nero 8 or Nero 7?
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to swan36kf's topic in Application Installs
im using imgburn for everything now. I have no reason to use anything else. -
First, create a new User (replace colored text with what you want to use) from a command prompt run this: Add him to the Administrators group: (optional) i also set the password expiry flag to never with the attached EXE file like so: netuser.exe Username /pwnexp:y Then after you have an account to setup the way you like: net user owner /active:no that will disable the old 'Owner' account netuser.exe

Processor Gets Overheated Within 5 Seconds
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Uméesh's topic in Hardware Hangout
that tells me your CPU (or possibly the motherboard) are toast. Personally, id replace the Mobo,CPU,Ram and PSU if the machine was plugged in during the storm. 1 of them might be good but usually trying to save a few dollars on parts will just limit you to the older architecture. try to salvage your cd/hard drives and maybe a video card (if its PCIe) but I would consider the system a loss. (though i tend to look for a reason to upgrade ) -
Processor Gets Overheated Within 5 Seconds
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Uméesh's topic in Hardware Hangout
is the cpu fan spinning? if not, it likely needs to be replaced. if so, does your BIOS show what RPM its running at? are there any obstructions that would prevent airflow to the machine? I used to do phone tech support for a computer OEM. this sorta reminds me of a call I took once. I once worked with a customer who had had her PC replaced once before due to overheating. the technician that came out and setup her PC told her the one she had likely overheated because if all the cat hair jamming up the fans(apparently she was one of those 'cat people' that collect cats) She was having an alarm going off when she turned her PC on and it would shut down within a few minutes. The new system had only been in place for 2 days. I saw the note about her previous system and asked her if the fans might clogged up with cat hair again. Heres the dialog as best as i can remember it: My hand went for the mute button so she couldnt hear me laughing my a** off. The rest of the conversation involved explaining the situation to her and scheduling a tech to replace the system again even though I didn't want to (my supervisor made me replace her system) -
you say you need "true" DOS. what features of DOS or what programs do you need to run? and BTW, im moving this thread to the XP forum
