  1. Eassos DiskGenius (formerly PartitionGuru) has been my favourite partition manager for years. As far as I know, the last XP compatible version is 5.5.0.1488 from 2023 and works very well under Windows XP. Many, many features, and you get very detailed information about your drives. It is even able to create images of partitions. In any case, I no longer allow any other partition tools to access my hard drives. And I tried a lot of them in the past.

  2. ... Most sadly , I have no reason whatsoever to believe they'll do otherwise ; I remember I had quite a hard time myself to convince them to extend py3.7's support until its official EoL by the PSF and build yt-dlp_x86.exe on it (for the sake of Vista/Win7 32-bit users); and they didn't think twice one year later about deprecating py3.8, leaving the still quite numerous Win7 (32/64-bit) users stranded; and, God forbid, they wouldn't use adang's Win7 mods, of course not ; indirectly, "they" shifted the onus upon you to provide yt-dlp builds to the Win7 communities, which you did out of the goodness of your heart and your extreme altruism, for which you are to be highly praised ! ... I firmly believe that now is the time to "kindly" approach talented "retro" coders like adang or Supermium's win32ss and enquire the feasibility of producing py3.10/3.11 binaries compatible with Vista SP2 (that should be easier, I think ) and, eventually, XP SP3... Perhaps someone over at the MDL forums could do it, I've seen more difficult things getting ported (like an FFmpeg-7.1 32-bit build that runs on XP/Vista) ... Kindest regards, many thanks for holding the "retro" flag high ...

  3. I assume you rather have a problem with a Windows XP SP3 essential security update since you didn't specify which update you are referring to. This, however, means that no one can help you.

  4. After many years using MiniTool Partition Wizard, I recommend not using it. The program does not align the partitions when creating them, so when you press the align button, what it does is redesign the partitions, leaving gaps between them. On the other hand, I will comment that versions 11 and 12 (latest XP) do not work well and can cause data corruption. I recommend using Eassos DiskGenius. The last one I have tried is 5.5.0.1488 from 2023 and it works well with MBR on Windows XP. I use quite a few Seagate +2TiB disks with physical sector 4096 and the program reports it. Eassos DiskGenius allows you to choose the alignment when creating the partitions. You can choose 2048 or any other. I wonder what the problem is with choosing the 256 alignment. It doesn't seem to cause any problems with Windows XP's disk manager, unlike 2048. Always allow time for operations to finish in Eassos DiskGenius, it's not clear when they finish. Same when starting the program, wait for it to start properly before touching anything. The program also allows you to make a copy of the partition table to restore in case of failure.

  7. On my Dell D620 Win 98 se system, I have not encountered any issues due to the driver. I also played a bunch of music files using the vlc 0.8.4 edition and did not encounter any crashes. I did not try a lot of games but I did hear the starting sounds from the Unreal Tournament before a crash. I generally do not intend to game on the laptop but I think the crashes might have to do with things other than the driver.(My installation is quite minimal and I run the system using a modern SSD. I only applied the RLoew PATCHMEM for the 4gb RAM that is there on the laptop) Volume Control can be achieved in multiple ways. The volume UP key on my Dell D620 works as does the VLC volume cone slider. The WAVEOUT.EXE can also be used if I am not mistaken. In my opinion the HDA driver along with the universal VBE graphics driver is the way to go for anyone attempting a Win 98 install on newer hardware configurations.

  9. O yes, I remember that in the past (with an older version of MPV) the config file was expected there. I switched to a self-built MPV since the Linux repo version is much older. I use these scripts to build my own version.

  10. I think i'll never love linux (as i loved XP ) - please take a look at the log when i add the option --log-file=mpv.log: <log stuff> So, where the heck do i now have to put the mpv.conf finally? i found these lines too: [ 0.004][d][global] config path: 'scripts' -/-> '~.configtde/mpv/scripts' [ 0.004][d][global] config path: 'scripts' -/-> '~.mpv/scripts' [ 0.004][d][global] config path: 'scripts' -/-> '/etc/mpv/scripts' but if i copy the mpv.conf to '~/.configtde/mpv/scripts' i get the error (red font in the konsole): Can't load unknown script: ~/.configtde/mpv/scripts/mpv.conf - Wow! Ok, now i created a directory '~/.mpv' where i put the 'mpv.conf' into - e voila: the configuration finally applies! The CPU consumption is now at moderate 15 % for playing the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsSMmdwh89Y. Thanks @nicolaasjan - in this case tor ,compelling' me to investigate the problem further!

  11. Supermium 126.0.6478.261 R7 is now out, apparently the last 126 version. A 132 version is due in February. I don't think I will bother to update again until the 132 version is released.

  12. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart. You'll never regret skipping that pile of -rem- No. it's not. There was some info about uBlock not working in CatsXP 132, but no problems on Win10. I tried myself, and it acts weird on 7 and Vista. Some ads aren't blocked, the browser is rather heavy on start.

  15. Many thanks again @j7n (and @nicolaasjan too!), indeed, that update (KB2533623 for kernel32.dll) fixed the specific problem of yt-dlp_win7.exe here (and probably some other issues that i hadn't discovered yet ). So, in case that Python 3.9 support of yt-dlp really would be dropped in october (god beware!), i'd be prepared ...

  16. I just tried that, TikTok doesn't allow to login from a VPN, only browsing, and only from a good VPN. So it's not a solution for many users. It's a trend, they all fight VPN to mine your data even more. Instagram does the same, and they don't allow to make an account from VPN, just like Tiktok.

  17. Then you should aligned it using this function in MiniTool Partition Wizard. Click in Minitool with right mouse button on your 240 SSD, press "Align" (sorry my Minitool use not English interface, so i don't know how exactly this options called in English version) and then press in left upper corner of program button "Apply". Also pay attention of info and warnings that program give to you (i mean read it with attention). It means that Cluster is 4K, it's just not aligned. In my case it's also 8 sectors per cluster, just my partitions are aligned. I guess it's do both. What a weird question. In Windows misalignment happens when you format drive with old windows before Vista. Your cluster is 4K, just it's start in wrong place - meaning program cluster of file system are not Coincides with physical cluster on HDD\SSD.

  18. How's this relevant to the TikTik closure? I kinda suspect they will perform the ban through the IP.

  19. Unpack the extension with Uniextract, install from "Developer Mode", it will never update then.

  20. That is not possible most of the time (I have tried and failed)... yt-dlp works significantly different now (uses newer Python syntax for example). But you could always suggest a change in youtube-dl's issue tracker. Then @dirkf can take a look at it and see if it could work.

  21. My system is rather unstable with Watler's HDA2.DLL, really needs most stability measures mentioned in this thread. About SBEMUL/SBMIDI: as far as I know these need a WDM-driver, which HDA2.DLL is not. But VDMSound can be used, according to @sifonium even for midi with the Yamaha-driver. Jack-detection through software is not supported by HDA2.DLL, only if hardwired like on old-fashioned hifi.

  22. FWIW, it's always worked fine for me. I get a lot of pops and clicks, but that's expected. Volume I can adjust using WaveOut.exe. I have no sound in DOS games, but that's not a problem for me. There is no recording functionality, but I would have been really amazed if there had been! I've never had any system hangs which were knowingly due to the audio driver.

  23. Just wanted to say a million thanks in this thread and if anyone has an Alienware M5700 the correct HDA to get sound is hdaicout.hda.100 to get win98 sound

  24. Thanks for your quick reply! Here is my screenshot of About: Same update package version! That's good. They have updated again. But what about your component package version? And did you read the linked topic? That sounds pretty serious to me.

  25. That's awesome to know you have that working on your system. Thanks! And yep! It's been a couple of years now that I couldn't get Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1.2522 to work in my Windows XP system. And even MBAM's support couldn't help to fix this issue. Today I thought to try it the last time. I had to dig deep into my system and removed all the remnants of old security programs and others, including a manual cleaning of my registry. Apparently, it did something.

  26. Hello @Dave-H! I finally got Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1.2522 working in my second system partition. I updated it, and the version of its definitions is 1.0.29410 I received today, 28-03-2023. Do you have the same version in your installation? Is that the most recent? I had a look at the MBAM forum and read some comment (also some of yours ). There I found this topic: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/295844-legacy-3512522-sudden-red-triangle-your-updates-are-not-current/#comment-1558895 It seems that Malwarebytes wants to completely discontinue support for version 3.5.1.2522, even under Windows XP. No further update of the definitions!? What do you know and think about this? Cheers

  27. In my main system partition, I'll stay with Panda Dome in any case. In my second system partition, I'll give Qihu 360 Total Security Essential 8.8.0.1119 a try, based on my positive experience so far. I generally prefer lightweight antivirus programs. Avast and AVG are too bloated, very resource-hungry and cumbersome. I have had that pleasure in the past. But what can I say? Cheers, AstroSkipper
