Same here (since login is not required). I did a Google for "is msfn.org down" during our outage and performing that search just now does show Twitter in the top search results and it does have a "up and running" status message. The Facebook page also shows up in the top results - but no status message. I think that's our tell-tale - Twitter is likely the preferred but only our next outage will really tell us (four years to the month between most-recent post and second-to-most-recent post).3 points

That's all I was asking about originally. I wasn't looking for a temporary MSFN replacement. I didn't think this thread had to go to the extent of "people with opinions" or bashing sites. Anyway. If someone were to update Facebook reliably on the MSFN page, that would suit me more than fine.3 points

I just stopped replying after a while, I had nothing else to add on topic, and the opinion pieces would get deleted, so better to not poke the bear.2 points

<OT> We are straying quite a bit from the original topic but I will add that I am also a member at Eclec and I did visit Eclec when MSFN was down to see if other both-site-members posted anything in regards to the outage (I didn't see one). I use the Maxthon theme at Eclec - but even the forum owner wouldn't recognize it on my computer, I love Stylus and hate non-scrolling background images, box shadows, linear gradients, anti-ailasing, dark mode, and forced hardware acceleration - all are disabled on my setup. I do not get any CPU spike even on Marmaduke Ungoogled v113 on Win10. This wouldn't be the first web site (new or old browser) where background-images, box shadows, and linear gradients effected performance. </OT>2 points

Makes sense since what I have installed on my PC is Chromium 103. I've never upgraded cause later they added that annoying Windows 7 and 8 end of support banner. It's a secondary browser for me anyway The default theme DVGFX2 is actually a dark theme. You can change themes in the "style" menu. IMO it's even too dark for daylight use so I mostly switch to Aero.2 points

Just do me a solid and stay away from the place. r/Windows over on Reddit is likely a better fit for you. I do not recommend using an older version of Chroimium. I was only pointing out a flaw in Chromium, for which I have not yet found a solution for. It is not evident in Firefox at all. You may get your 5 minutes of fame here on MSFN, but you have no such audience with me. This sort of Reddit-esque nonsense is what prompted me to me to branch off with my own project in the first place. I'm ending this here. Good day2 points

Owner here. That's an awfully rude and unfounded thing to say. I have no form of advertising there, much less cryptomining. You can go so far as to use it without any javascript, as there is already very little of it. The problem lies with recent versions of Chromium, which I thought until recent was isolated to my systems running legacy Intel HD. The problem in Chromium is related to high resolution background images used in CSS. For some reason unknown to any rational person, Blink seems to go into assault mode with the CPU to render such images on pages. Early 100.x builds are not impacted, and Firefox-based browsers aren't impacted at all. I'm not sure what sort of workaround I could provide to Chromium users. I tried tweaking the CSS some, using a known trick to force Blink/Webkit browsers to use Hardware Acceleration. transform: translateZ(0); seems to do the trick, but throws all div elements off. Go into Developer tools, and disable the background image. You'll find that is the culprit. It is rather large I admit, at 2560x1600. It's just under 1 MB with compression, though. My site is not the only site impacted, either. You'll find this with any page that uses a large background image. I'm surprised people haven't raised a bigger fuss about it. I can't say I can provide a drop-in replacement to RyanVM. In truth, I've only visited that place a small handful of times. I think comparing information boards is apples to oranges, so take your pick accordingly. I will say off the bat, my board features much less social features than you'd find here on MSFN. (mandatory post approval, no outbound DMs). It's really an information archive first and foremost. The blog portion is whatever ADHD brings to the table that moment, and is largely dissociated.2 points

That's brought a tear to my eye. What an effort. A bit of early feedback: Win95C + IE4.01 SP2 404s. Attached as ie4.png. That might have happened with the original Windows Update for all I know, but it'd be great if IE4 could be made to work. Win95C + IE5.01 Attached as ie5.png. Look at that! I get a Security Warning pop-up to install and run "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\ident.cab" each time I visit the site. My Critical Updates Package contains Security Update, January 17, 2000 and Critical Update, September 10, 1999. Both get "Could not be installed because the file was not found" There's a page error at line 679 of catalog.htm: Object doesn't support this property or method: 'document.all(...).Style'. Is this a Microsoft issue? Trying all the shown IE5 patches (ie5-patches.png) resulted in four of the six being installed, with Offline Browsing Pack and Internet Connection Wizard not being found. Are the missing files simply a case of someone sourcing them and contributed them to the project?1 point

Wow! A 17 year old thread brought back to life with a poll on age. So shouldn't those poll results auto-update every year? Because I guarantee you that the biggest segment of the MSFN Population is no longer the 15 to 24 groups!1 point

by extension , embedded is gone and so is the context menu ... https://www.crx4chrome.com/crx/142425/ posted earlier on page 18 , with some changes to the default settings. and with some file deletes to slim it down to 1mb.1 point

Can you send me the Maxthon stylus? I have a half finished abandoned dark mode conversion of it that I'm pretty sure I was working on before Eclecboard was a thing or at least before it was a clone board. The theme actually is somewhat live on the site, you can see it by appending &style=8 to any page on the board, but you can't normally select it. This post was going to be a lot longer, but I don't feel like going that far OT.1 point

Websites are interactive. I did expect a catalog or at least usage instructions. The information in your response should be displayed if the server can't determine what else to do.1 point

I don't suggest extensions for the sake of switching the User-Agent. As pointed out, they don't "always" work because there are other means to detect your browser. That said, using the loader.ini to set your User-Agent does correctly also update AppVersion accordingly.1 point

New test results made me edit my previous post about Facebook. However, along with all the scripts and other standard FB bloat, the photos currently on the MSFN page make it too heavy for me. I would prefer a light-weight, text-only page for status updates.1 point

A few weeks ago I had this problem on my Win 7 machine, Resource monitor had stopped displaying anything. ( CTL-ALT-DEL, Task manager, performance, Resource Monitor) If I started monitoring under the monitor button it would only show data in overview, Cpu and memory. Disk and memory were blank. Performance Monitor also gave errors about performance counters. CMD (run as administrator) lodctr /r fixed the Performance Monitor but not the Resource Monitor problems. I then saw asolution on the internet that said to rename C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup. This is hard to do as the files are currently in use by Windows. I searched the in C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup for the files that had been changed around the time that the problem occurred.I found that EtwRTDiagLog.etl and EtwRTEventLog-System.etl were changed and renamed them with no problem, Restarted my computer and both perfmon and resmon now work correctly. I do not know if lodctr /r was necessary or if only one of the files needs to be renamed. Both renamed files can be deleted after the reboot. I hope this helps someone as it took me about 6 hours to figure out RJM1 point

Hello @roytam1! Breaking the walled internet by using a good VPN service would not work at your location if this unbelievable (from a European perspective) case happens? Or to put it another way, is the use of VPN services allowed or possible at all in Chinese regions whose internet is walled? In any case, I sincerely hope that nothing bad will happen. We appreciate you and your work, and need you here. Your browser editions are legendary, essential and extremely important for users of legacy OSes. Without them, a new dying process of XP and Vista would probably begin. Kindest regards, AstroSkipper1 point

Kind-of On-Topic Notice: Hong Kong government applies for injunction against protest song ‘Glory to Hong Kong’ may in a result making Hong Kong's internet be walled like other china cities. If this really happens, I may not able to do any further actions. See also: Blocking Google? Hong Kong internet providers express concerns over enforcing possible protest song ban1 point

Can't replicate this in PaleMoon and Chromium Oh, I almost forgot i read 3 Twilight saga books so my eclipse.cx recommendation doesn't count!!!1 point

I would suggest either https://forum.eclectic4un.me/ or https://board.eclipse.cx/ (or both) They are ran and used mostly by MSFN members. For example @Roytam1 posts his browser updates on Eclipse while kernel extenders like @win32 or @ximonite use the EclecBoard.1 point

I forgot to mention that SuperAntispyware still works on XP. The program is paid. There is a 14 day trial version.I have tested that work the latest version 10.0.1252 (173 MiB) from 2023 and version 6.0.0.1250 (30 MiB) (2017-12-22) with updated database. But the "System tools" option stays frozen looking for items in the latest version (I have waited 10 minutes). While in version 6 it works fine. https://www.superantispyware.com/1 point

"What Is Happening to Chrome's Built-In Google Translate Feature? In a community post on the Chrome Support page, Google announced its plan to disable Chrome's built-in translation service on version Chrome 95 or older. As we all know, MSFN is already represented on Twitter and Facebook For the future case that MSFN is not available for a longer period of time (several days), a short message there would be desirable. You don't have to have a Twitter or Facebook account to read such a status message. Personally, I am not a social media fan, but if such accounts already exist, then perhaps they should be used. Unfortunately, when MSFN was down on 03/06/2023, there was no message. Nor on the following days. The last messages were from 2019. Such accounts are then of course useless.1 point

You may be right, but when the MSFN status thread was set up on RyanVM (by dencorso I think) it was a nice place to be able to go and check in with others when MSFN was offline. Of course it's not essential to have somewhere like that, but I always thought it was a good thing to have.1 point

tried them all but found only one extension that can replace the simple chrome internal translate option as close as possible. in the sense that it also works on logged in pages and stays in the current tab with a similar translate bar at the top. all the others have font issues , don't work , log you out or ask ( again ) for cookies on the translated site. tested against the msfn forum page ( for retaining login ) and many others ( for function ). can translate to 109 languages , last setting in the bar is kept until you change it. Edge Translate : https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/edge-translate/bocbaocobfecmglnmeaeppambideimao or here : https://www.crx4chrome.com/crx/142425/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- optional : a rather large extension that has many more options i do not want or use. tweaked the settings a bit to leave only the "Translate this page" in the context menu. hidden the extension button as it is no longer needed. when all below is done the simple right click translate option is back again. Content Settings : disable all 8 options. Hybrid Translator Config : set all to "google translate". Other Settings : disable "Enable Select Translate" , "Use Built-in PDF Viewer" , "Provide statistics to help improve the extension". Delete in : Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\bocbaocobfecmglnmeaeppambideimao\2.4.1_0\_locales all but the "en" folder. Delete in : Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\bocbaocobfecmglnmeaeppambideimao\2.4.1_0\google\lans all but the "lan_en.js" file. Delete in : Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\bocbaocobfecmglnmeaeppambideimao\2.4.1_0\google\main all but the "main_en.js" file Delete the complete "Chrome\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\bocbaocobfecmglnmeaeppambideimao\2.4.1_0\pdf" folder. these settings with the files and folder deletes works best for me. this extension makes a connection to deepl.com on browser start. have added "127.0.0.1 www.deepl.com" to the windows hosts file to correct that as i don't use deepl. will see if google restores the function for 360chrome. if not , the original translate context menu can be removed with the change below in the chrome.dll. Function : Drop Translate to English from Chrome mode page context menu (1 occurrence) replace : C0 FB 8D 86 F0 02 00 00 50 E8 with : C0 FB E9 E6 00 00 00 90 50 E8 https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/ in HxD : file open "chrome.dll" / search-replace / hex-values / all / copy the above codes in first and second field / replace. save the file and delete the "chrome.dll.bak" file. for all of the above , make sure 360chrome is closed. to be safe , copy the complete 360chrome folder to another location and perform the above in that folder first to try. after the changes , launch 360chrome with the 360loader from that folder and not with your regular shortcut to see the results !1 point

Thanks, but I'll say again, what we're looking for is a forum where people can refer to a thread which discusses MSFN's current status if it goes offline, for whatever reason. We're not talking about a substitute for MSFN as a whole, which I'm sure we all hope will never become necessary! On RyanVM here (archived) we just had a social thread where we re-grouped when MSFN was down. I may be wrong, but I think it was instigated by dencorso. As that forum no longer exists, we'd just like to find a suitable replacement.1 point

See: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp#related-scripts I know, but I put the link here anyway for others to test. Indeed. I'm amazed he still manages to cope with the hundreds of duplicate issues.1 point

What are "lazy extractors"? Thanks, but yt-dlp doesn't work on my non-SSE2 cpu. Occasional commits indeed, mostly by 1 person. Youtube-dl's main developers abandoned the project (2 years ago?). The question is how long dirkf will keep this up.1 point

@Mirage Windows 2000 Extended Kernel v3.1h has been released, and it fixes the font issue you mentioned.1 point
-
Sorry for the delay! Absolutely, I've attached before and after pictures to this post. The first picture is Windows 2000 before any extended kernels, the latter is after applying 3.1g2 . The top line of text is Arial, the bottom one is Times New Roman. I've not sure if the images will look compressed after uploading them here - if they are and both look fuzzy, then I'll trying uploading them to imgur or some other image hosting site. Wordpad's an easy place to see the fuzziness, but it's not exclusive to Wordpad - it shows up anywhere these fonts are used, such as in Internet Explorer or in application installers. as well. Sure thing. The most recent version of the extended kernel is affected (g2). I know for sure that 3.0e isn't affected, since that was the first version I tried and didn't have any problems then. I gave 3.0f a try and it wasn't affected either, the fonts look the same before and after. Tomorrow, when I have more time, I'll sit down and see if I can pin down the exact extended kernel version where the problem first shows up.1 point

Hello! Recently, I've been playing around with Windows 2000 and the extended kernel on an old ThinkPad I own, and it's been really nice! It's neat to see how much I can actually do with it. However, on newer versions of the extended kernel (from the win2k.org wlu update site), I noticed that it messes up the fonts after you install it. Arial and Times New Roman, in particular, look clean and nicely aligned before applying the extended kernel, but afterwards look like a complete mess and are far less readable. It's particularly easy to see in a text editor, like Wordpad, if you do a before and after comparison. Is there any way to reverse the messed up fonts? I tried expanding and copying back over the original TTFs from the Win2K install medium, but that unfortunately didn't help any... I also tried looking for a settings panel to control the font rendering, but was unsuccessful, save for toggling the smooth fonts option in the Display Options (which didn't fix it, just made it blurrier).1 point
