SSDs are cheap nowadays. i7 3770 could be picked up for ~40 EUR. For some reason , DDR3 is kinda expensive here lol. Imo, not really worth to upgrade your machine , already 10 yo platform. Ryzen combos (CPU+MOBO+RAM?) can be picked up pretty cheap.2 points

... This has been covered previously, but both "??" and "?." are operators and operators can not be polyfilled (what palefill strives to achieve with UXP-incompatible JS code), only transpiled... Palefill itself won't work fully/at all on sites that demand such operators, unless the application platform (UXP in this case) carries native support for said operators... UXP has had native support for "??" and "?." since many months ago: "?.": May 2022, "??": June 2022, the fact you can now use, e.g., GitHub without palefill is largely due to Web Components support (finally) landing...2 points

... The last version of which is v1.70, from 2020... The app is tailored to work best with official Mozilla Firefox, properly installed in the system... For XP x86, you obviously need to DL the 32-bit flavour - localization file needs to be separately downloaded/extracted and placed alongside the main executable... Once launched, don't fear if the window ends up being empty : Top Menu => File => Select Folders => Profile Folder Path: ... and paste there the full (absolute) path to the browser profile directory holding the account credentials you wish to extract/back-up; as you might have figured out already, the app also works for "portable" browser installations! FTR, just used it on latest St52 (32-bit), so it definitely works on UXP-based browsers ...1 point

I appreciate that very much! Thank you for your kind words...I'd like to be encouraging as much as possible, especially because no one has an obligation to maintain projects like these. I'm thankful as an XP user to still have options that work well at this point. Thank you for sharing those sites too...they do seem to have rendering issues in the latest NM28, and I'm noticing an identifying text at the bottom of both pages ("PHI Theme 3.14.4"). It should be possible for them to restore compatibility by rolling back to an earlier version of that theme, or even pre-3.x.x, though I'm sure they won't as there's no real motivation (money aside) for them to do so. If these sites can be made to work, that would be absolutely great. Even so, it's amazing how well NM28 still does with the web now. About 90% of the modern web, as it now stands, still works with zero issues in NM28, and that's one hell of a winning percentage.1 point

I ran DiskFresh on the disk with oldest stuff on it, it's a WD WD5000AADS, which was bought in July 2010. The program is simple and should run on every Windows from XP to 10 at least. It also reports bad sectors, have two of those, which I knew about for quite some time now (just that they exist, I haven't found the time to investigate when I saw for the first time that they exist in the S.M.A.R.T. data, which must have been months ago), but only encountered one file several weeks back that could not be read. I've got the file back from backup copy and ran 7-Zip's CRC32 check through remaining files just to see if they're readable. They are, so I guess should run some other program that would write zeroes to unallocated clusters to get the drive to remap bad sectors. Whatever processes might be occurring, they should be very slow, it doesn't seem like leaving some files on the drive for 10 years will surely change them. So one might just wear out the drive faster by refreshing it regularly. Spinrite...beware of that program, especially if the disk is going wonky.1 point

Just to add to this, that specific URL also loads successfully in Chr69-based 360EEv11, so the reason it doesn't do so under UXP (which I can't pinpoint now, sadly ) shouldn't be a recent "Googl-ism"... OTOH, https://przedszkolowo.pl/ requires at least the Chr86-based 360EEv13 (v11/12 don't work, much like UXP) to load fully, so that one requires something "more recent" UXP should implement to handle it... The term "recent" is used tentatively here , because, sadly, Chromium-86 should no longer be considered "recent", WebCompat-wise ... Later addition: The "why" it doesn't work was posted below: Needs support for defining static stuff inside the class What perplexes me a bit is that the linked MDN article mentions, under Browser compatibility, that "static" was implemented in Chr49/Fx45 ...1 point

I'm not aware of any reason to run my CPU permanently at max frequency, which is what even Performance plan does. Why should it run at 100% while typing this? Or staring at the wall of text. Didn't see the need to change default plan even when I played games, but then I'm not picky and maybe I'm not detecting everything. My hardware is old anyway, wasn't on the blazing fast side when new, more on the economical side and takes longer to crunch through certain things as it is, the default plan bumps up the frequencies when needed anyway and using performance plans all-the-time hardly does much in the grand scheme of things.1 point

Been having this issue too. Wasn't sure if it was related to PC sleep/wake, but it does seem to be related to the monitor standby. I think this is kind of an important scenario, given how many folks are using SAB to move their task bars to a non-OLED secondary monitor to prevent burn in.1 point

I founded a solution to repair (nearly) all the metro apps. First, install Windows 8.1, then your drivers and connect to the internet. Update your system (maybe there are some updates that aren't necessery, but I installed all of them) and restart. Re-check for updates (maybe some weren't installed) multiple time until you dont have any update avaible (don't forget to restart every time you install some). Now some apps (like MSN Weather) will work again. To make the last metro apps that aren't working working (like MSN News), you will have to uninstall them and re-download them from the Windows Store. After that, nearly all the aps sould work. Unfortunately, you need a Microsoft account to download thoses apps from the Windows Store and some apps like MSN Travel have been discontinued so, I don't think there is a way to make them work again.1 point

There is no need to do that. I don't want to have a small FAQ. People seeking information should be prepared to read, otherwise they will unfortunately have to be content with trivial knowledge. I am not a friend of the unwillingness to inform oneself comprehensively. In today's youth, it is common practice to get information quickly. But then they don't know anything.1 point
-
Yeah, I finally found it. But as I said, make a small FAQ, would be a great way to summarize the article with all important points.1 point

If you want to avoid that, make something short and easy to understand, not Wikipedia (even if it's complete and we have all details, not everyone is able to read all of that and understand, or even choose the right section to get the information they're looking for). Or make a section "Frequently Asked Questions", with the common questions about this. If you want to reply, send me a private message, this is kinda polluting the thread (which does not make the search easy for people who are trying to find a specific post). My post is a complete article containing everything about these proxies. At the beginning, there is a table of contents. And you have a site search in nearly all browsers. If that's not enough, there's unfortunately nothing I can do to help. Those seeking information should be prepared to read, otherwise they will unfortunately have to be content with trivial knowledge. In such a case, however, one should not spread information about such things. You are referring to the TLS 1.2 proxies from @heinoganda and @Thomas S.. These proxies are no longer up-to-date, either. Oh my dear! I gave you the link and the sections. What more do you need to find information? Once again: Here is the link to my article: Have a look at the sections 8. The TLS 1.3 proxy ProxyMII and 9. The TLS 1.3 proxy ProxHTTPSProxy's PopMenu TLS 1.3! Hope you will find it finally!1 point
-
I just tried it on an old laptop wich didn't manage to have SSE2 and the proxy didn't work at all. Btw, I'm using the MII v1.3a for Windows 98 (TLS 1.2 is not needed). I also use Windows Update v4 for Windows XP/2000 and Windows Update v3.1 for older OS (Windows 95 to Me). And I could not find this article (the signatures does not load if it's in yours). For web browsing, do not use Windows XP at all (using an old and insecure HTTPS proxy on an unsupported OS will be insecure in all cases). Your article is great, but toooooooo long (there is no summary), and I don't really have the time to read all. I don't understand at all how a proxy works ... All I see is if it works or not (that's a joke, don't take it personnally). I only use ProxHTTPSProxy for debugging some old software with https requests, nothing more. I am not angry with you or trying to degrade your work, don't worry about that.1 point

I'm sorry, but your numbers violate the laws of physics. A DNS lookup takes between 20 and 120 milliseconds and you're claiming page load times from 80 milliseconds to 110 milliseconds. Theoretically, yet, that is possible - if you are connecting to one and only one server, which is extremely rare in and of itself.1 point

The "latest" St52 and St55 are not being sent the same HTML as being sent to other browswers (including older St52 and St55). The "latest" St52 and St55 are not being sent the visibility: hidden for the <body> tag. No clue "why", changing user agent did not get the "latest" St (forgot if I tested in 52 or 55) to be sent the visibility: hidden. Limited investigation, could not isolate "why", but this will give you a headstart into something to look for - why is that visibility: hidden being sent to older browser's <body> tags but not to "latest" St's ???1 point

This proxy requires SSE2 as I see. SSE2 is not supported on many old hardware. That's why I said this version. There is no difference and both work.1 point

Oh! That explains a lot...it is good to finally have Web Components support. I did learn recently about UXP gaining support for this, but didn't realize it directly affects the ability to use GitHub without Palefill. Thank you for the explanation! (And thanks for not making me feel like an id*** about it...) I would like and do want to learn more about JavaScript, operators, etc. Though I fall into the category of your typical user (as opposed to a programmer/contributor), I don't want to be totally ignorant of how everything works...honestly, it's just amazing to go back to NM28 and see all the changes that have been made as of late. I'm finding NM28 is still very good and reliable as a 'base' browser...and for the sites that have issues in it, I'm glad there are other alternative browsers, like 360 and Mypal68, to use as well. Roy has definitely made a tremendous effort over the years with his browser forks. I am always excited to try a new release, even if there's the occasional bug...the fact that there are still browsers being maintained and updated for XP users is amazing, doubly so that it's on such a frequent basis. I feel like the XP to 7 to 10 transition, over time, can be accomplished and I feel very comfortable about it now. For now, I'm happy that I'm still able to use this legendary, venerable OS as my 'daily driver'. MS's finest hour for sure!1 point

If my website has 0.50 s load in my extension, Developer Tools says: Load: 481 ms. That's the difference. With Developer Tools window visible, my website loads very poor... 0.50 s rather than 0.11 s without Developer Tools window, that's why the extension I use is TOP, very handy and truthful in measures..1 point

r Except it is literally not. I do experience this bug as well (in fact, I experience it right now, just too lazy to reboot Windows to fix it), and it affects classic applications' titles as well: I occasionally get it after restoring my laptop after hibernation. It also happens more often if Windows hibernated because the laptop ran out of battery, or if I boot into Linux when Windows is hibernated (even if I do not mount Windows partitions in Linux!) I'm not sure whether SAB or new W11 builds (I'm running 22623.1095) are to blame, though. I only remember it never happened until 3.6.x, and it started to happen times often after I installed GRUB. I also use 125% scaling on Windows, and I haven't tested whether the problem persists on 100% scaling or not.1 point
