  1. Ah, good call...thanks for being so cool about it! I probably couldn't add much to the discussion, except to drunkenly type "WOO! CLAMAV IS THE BEST!" and scream like a banshee while waving my shirt in the air. It is nice to know there are specific threads for things like this...that makes it a lot easier to find what you're looking for, rather than combing through pages and pages and getting nowhere.

  2. You might want to read this thread on AIMP Forum. ... Thanks, I can't read Russian , so I used: https://www-aimp-ru.translate.goog/forum/index.php?topic=69488&_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=el&_x_tr_pto=wapp Having read the translation, I did not find answers as to why Vista SP2 support has been reinstated (but I'm not complaining, obviously ); the thread basically talks about AIMP-v5.x's inability to integrate with the OS under WinXP (i.e., establish 1) media file associations and 2) access to Windows Explorer's Context Menu ); and I was also reminded of XP's excellent file association editor, one thing I strongly lamented when I moved to Vista (on Vista+, it's quite a PITA to remove/delete already established file associations; I had to resort to a third party app ...).

  3. ... I acknowledge this thread has a broader focus on "Software Running on XP", so it's still fine by me , however, since the last two posts seem to pertain specifically to Anti-Virus software (and in particular to ClamAV), perhaps further discussion on these should be better continued in "our" specific thread below: https://msfn.org/board/topic/177099-which-antiviruses-are-known-for-a-fact-to-be-working-on-xp-sp3-as-of-2019/ ... where I believe ClamAV was also recently mentioned ... Just my 2c, ofc ...

  4. It was done for compatibility with Linux, well, technically, WINE on Linux, pre-Windows 7 compatibility was not the goal, just the side effect. One post in the linked thread from my previous post was quoted here. I know not everyone understands Russian, I just posted the link to the source material, people may use whatever they want to translate.

  5. Looks like XP and Vista were mentioned in the changelog for 5.10.2408 Beta 2. I see, didn't check before. You might want to read this thread on AIMP Forum.

  6. The download page still says Windows Vista - Windows 11 for current version 5.11.2427. Is that an error? Missing APIs? If you navigate to AIMP's Old versions page for Windows, you'll hopefully see that Vista SP2 support was withdrawn, starting with v5.01.2358 (Release date: 28.12.2021), so @WinClient5270 was right to pick out v5.00.2344 (Release date: 09.11.2021) as the Vista EoS one ; however, in a move quite rare these days, Vista SP2 support was re-instated, starting with v5.10.2418 (Release date: 21.12.2022) ...

  7. ... Well, just for the heck of it , this afternoon I decided to revisit, more than a year ago since the last time, e10s on my St52 copy, putting to the test the most up-to-date release, i.e. v52.9.0 (2023-03-30) (32-bit) ... First, I made a full backup of my current, single-process, St52 profile; then, in about:config, I enabled below (hidden) pref: browser.tabs.remote.force-enable;true and toggled/modified prefs below: browser.tabs.remote.autostart;true extensions.e10sBlocksEnabling;false dom.ipc.processCount;2 After a proper browser restart, multiprocess was ON, with a maximum of 3 "basilisk.exe" processes inside Task Manager ; I used it that way for more than an hour, no dramatic changes in my configuration here (3GB of total RAM, 2 core CPU, 2007-era...), the browser was rock-steady overall ; but then I stumbled on a show stopper ; once inside an online post editor, like the one here on MSFN (I'm typing this on) or GitHub's issue/comment editor, the DEL and BACKSPACE keyboard buttons no longer work as expected there ... Say I type the word "test", and the caret (aka text cursor) is after the last "t": test| If I press BACKSPACE once, nothing happens; I would expect "t" to be deleted instead... Worse, if I press (inadvertently) the BACKSPACE button once more, the whole tab changes to the URL previously visited (in that tab), possibly resulting in typed content loss in the editor ... If I use the left arrow key (<-) to place the caret after "s": tes|t and then press the DEL button, again, nothing happens; I would expect "t" to be deleted instead, too... Both these annoyances can be worked-around via selecting the characters to delete with the mouse and pressing DEL button, but one has to be careful with the BACKSPACE button, plus one has to modify one's workflow (of years) to accommodate these e10s "bugs"... Are these shortcomings known to those that prefer multiprocess? Can they be mitigated? I've gone back to my single-process profile now, where both buttons in question behave as expected, still curious though ...

  8. ... Oh that ... I did pass by this post in the thread you linked originally, but must have not put 1+1 together at the time: In any case, I lost interest in whatever additional Artem had to say in that post, once the dreaded "WinXP is dead" was brought up ; which might be a true thing according to Microsoft, but, at the same time, gives out a lot about the app author's intentions towards EoS'ed WinOSes ... At the end of the day, hooray for WINE (on Linux) ! Of course, and no need to get defensive (if you did) ; I just pointed out that "I" can't read Russian and also included the "whatever" I used to translate it... All's fine ! Best wishes.

  10. There are a few things to consider, but it should be possible. UEFI-only installation : Use bootloader from FlashBoot Pro or ESU update + graphic driver integration. NTOSKRNL_EMU : It will allow you to use backported generic USB 3.0, touchpad, and eMMC driver. You may have to backport other drivers by yourself.

  13. The latest version of Panda Antivirus works on XP (somewhat, it's a bit buggy sometimes). I should mention that when I tested it I got a lot of false positives. I can't really say I'd recommend it. ClamAV supports anything from W95 and up I believe, although there's no automatic scanning. You would have to scan things manually with it.

  16. The Luna Olive Green and Silver skins would both seem to be fairly easy - once time permits. Unsure on the Aero Trans Brushed Metal - I dislike "aero" and disable it on OSes that it pertains to. Aero is not "native" to XP, to the best of my knowledge, though I suspect it has been backported as making XP look like 7 used to be a "big thing" on many forums. Aero also doesn't exist in 10 or 11 - again, to the best of my knowledge. While it may be an order of "semantics", 10 does have a "transparency" effect but that's not really the same as "aero". I'm not a fan of "transparent" and "blurry" toolbars either. I want crisp and clear, not blurry and distorted. "To each their own", as the saying goes.

  17. Greetings. Apologies if this has already been asked in some form or another, but text guides often get outdated or replaced with simpler means. Also I searched the forums beforehand and got no results. Most guides I found only use Windows 10. I was gifted an Acer C730 [GNAWTY] Chromebook a while back. I understand that Baytrail models support Windows 10 (I actually have it installed at the moment for software testing). However, I would like to downgrade to 7. If I cannot, I may have to move back to GalliumOS or some other lightweight Linux distribution. I keep finding mixed answers on various forums, but I've also seen a lot of people outright say others shouldn't because 7 is obsolete. I'm just doing it for fun, so I don't really care if it's obsolete. I just want to know if it would even be possible. If anyone here has already tested it before, what were your results? Could you document any driver issues you had? Thank you for reading.

  21. Thanks for the info! I don't use an antivirus but have tried a few in the past. If I was forced into a situation where I had to use one, I'd take ClamAV every day and twice on Sundays, because it's good on resources. Never had any problems with it or good old ClamWin. Avast 4.8, until support ended for it, was also a fantastic antivirus. It seems a port is being maintained that is backwards compatible all the way to NT4. There are certain caveats based on the situation in which you wish to run it, but if the requirements are met the results should be terrific. https://oss.netfarm.it/clamav/

  22. You could install it on XP? Here, installer spammed access violation errors and couldn't get to the installing part, got stuck at the page selecting type of installation (who knows, missing updates or something borked), but ZIP version indeed launched and could play a FLAC file and adding a podcast accessible via plain HTTP works. HTTPS could be problematic.

  23. What you're thinking of is known as a passthrough. You'd essentially need 2 graphics card: one for the host (main OS), the other for the guest (VM). KVM/QEMU is usually the way it's done, and that requires a Linux setup unless things have changed. Probably be easier to just emulate in 86box, if the CPU is fast enough. Even if you could passthrough, say 9x; that doesn't mean a 1030 would work. You would need an age appropriate graphics card to passthrough, just as you would with a physical computer.

  26. I refuse to use Apple products whenever possible; I'm not a Google fan either but I'm unaware of any CFW that would be compatible for my phone. I've actually seen some people use virtual machines on their mobile devices to run Windows XP and lower, but never tried it myself. I think it would be nice for playing some old games on-the-go.

  28. Not really. Will depend largely on what version of Win10 you use. I prefer 2016 LTSB and WinReducerEX100. Other versiosn of Win10 will require much more, things like PowerShell scripts to get rid of "metro" bloat. I'm technically only about 90% in on my Win10 migration as I have encountered a small snag with .net frameworks being enabled out-of-the-box directly after install.

  29. Thanks, yeah it had to be said, I'm tired of that trio of users saying hi to each other every day and then placing each other upvotes for their ego-boost, it looks very silly and spammy ! I used the Italian antivirus on my girfriend. She is my testing grounds. The amount of time it was used is very short. but I can say it's very light-weight, I know for sure because she runs on a very cheap Pentium CPU I bought for her on sale for 45 Euros in 2017. Pentium G(smth) - Kaby lake with fake cores. The one they use in office machines only.

  30. How often do you see the "Win2k-basic-gray"? How often is the 360Chrome styling/skinning "above" versus "below"? Do you know the height of the "Win2k-basic-gray" title bar and did you decrease this height? Just curious in case I revisit a possible Win2k Theme.

  38. But he added "I can't speak to when we will remove support for Windows 7/Windows 8." Maybe 115 won't be the last, but I doubt that they will continue after that. They will surely loose some users after that. That's why they take so long to consider

  39. Glad to know that everything worked out for you! It just goes to show why Revo is such a trusted program after all of these years. I couldn't commend the developers more highly...with so many sketchy pieces of software out there, and with how much programs tend to change and decline over the years, Revo has stayed reliable with its functionality and performance even on very old PCs. Old school functionality in a new school world. Here's hoping the freeware version will continue to support XP for the foreseeable future!

  40. I was up late with my mind wandering. Got curious if latest VCDS version 23.3.0 would install and launch, so: Status reads Questionable since the HEX-V2 interface wasn't connected to the car, I'd have to either carry this computer to the garage or get XP running on the laptop to see if it actually talks to the car. One would assume it should since it's the interface that does the talking and the program apparently can talk to the interface. But the software is no longer supported and tested on Vista/XP/2000, so if something doesn't work, it won't be fixed.

  41. Just recently the regstry backups that Revo Uninstaller creates saved my Win10 when it commited suicide overnight (probably some f#$%d silent update). It was getting BSODs when entering sleep mode, i would wake up in the morning to see a BSOD. I tried uninstalling the last updates and using System Restore, this made it even worse. In the end it was even unable to boot. And, of course, repair reinstalls need to be run from a working OS, pfff. Clean install is not an option for me considering all the little tweaks and programs i have accumulated over the few years since i got this system.

  43. ... When/where did I actually said that? If on Vista SP2, go and install: ... You can't update the VS2022 runtime past v14.32.31332.0 (that's contained inside the linked AIO package), but all apps requiring VS2015-2022 runtimes should continue to work as expected with that EoS version...

  44. Much appreciated! I did notice that the "Pro" version now has Vista listed as the minimum supported OS. It's great to know there is a clear 'final' version for XP. I will have to try it out one day (I saved it to my flash drive), but for now the freeware version suits my needs perfectly fine. Thank you!

  46. The motor is usually powered at 12V, very likely it can stand a 15-20% voltage increase, at 14.4 V it would probably reach 8,640 RPM, give or take 33 and1/2 tolerance. You can replace some 15-20 SMT components on the PCB board and write a new firmware for it. You only need 5-10 years in UNI+experience in hardware engineering, some 5-10 years in software development for embedded devices, another 5-10 years experience with access to hard disk manufacturers codebase, a semiconductor factory willing to create a new SMOOTH chip and you will probably have a working prototype. Ah, wait, before I forget, you will also need a soldering iron and a USB to TTL converter. jaclaz
