  1. Well, the thing is, for all of Moonchild's programming talent, MCP just isn't up to the task of putting into UXP every new Javascript feature that someone (usually Google) thinks up, gets approved, and works into every Web framework they can get their greedy hands on. A deeper "bench" of programmers would help. Too bad MCP spent much of the past few years alienating would-be allies rather than welcoming them into the fold. And while the main cause of that alienation is now gone, it's probably too late now. All that said, UXP is still an impressive browser platform. I'm often surprised how many Web sites do still work with it!

  2. I'm working on building a new PC for myself to use with Windows 8.1 on it (mainly because of my distaste for 10 and 11 and also nostalgia for using 8.1), and since I'll have to deal with all of the problems with trying to use modern hardware and software on an OS that has it's support ending in mere days I decided to join this forum as it seems to be a wonderful place for expertise on that matter. I'm very unknowledgeable about computer stuff (I don't know what drivers or the stuff on motherboards are other than pure magic ) so please keep that in mind when interacting with me here. (Definitely trying to learn, however!) (Also, to those curious about the username: I'm a big Spongebob fan, so when I saw the username wasn't taken I just had to snag it.)

  3. 140 MB without extensions and 220 MB with extensions. Vista x64, BTW. Back in 2012, you could fit 40 tabs in 620 MB of RAM or less! Well, at least according to the test the good guys at Tom's Hardware did. And 620 MB figure was in Opera, the worst in that aspect at the time. Yup, all updated. I figured I can't use --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds because then I don't get actual webpage compositing acceleration despite the green status on chrome://gpu, so videos lag. --use-angle=gl gives me slow (not SwiftShader slow, but slow nonetheless), but fully functional WebGL and no webpage compositing acceleration (so laggy videos again). It just occured to me that there are two distinct flags specifying how graphics / WebGL is handled (didn't do enough reading), until recently, I thought --use-angle=gl is just the new --use-gl=desktop and that the latter is not relevant anymore, but that is not the case, works differently internally. --use-gl=desktop gives me an error about missing wglCreatePbufferARB on chrome://gpu page...dang it, another dead end, so again no HW accelerated compositing and WebGL through very slow SwiftShader. Though wglCreatePbufferARB is very old function and seems doubful that the driver would lack it. I'd rather bet on the nice personality.

  6. Uh, that's my post on my Reddit account, lol. And my post is about: running latest official Chrome on XP with an extended kernel, in this case, One-Core-API. Chrome 102 is the latest version that runs at the moment, any version higher than 102 immediately crashes upon launch. What we're talking about is: having backports/forks of Chromium 92 working on XP, without any extended kernels!

  9. The only "next Chrome for XP" that I am aware of is being forked/backported from Chromium v92. I applaud more options but at the same time don't think v92 really gains us much over v86. UXP died two years ago and as others have noted, it's hanging by a thread on "life support". v86 is "living the golden years" in a retirement community, but there will be a day that it too will be on "life support". I don't follow the "javascript chronology" or whatever it would be called - does anyone know what v92 would gain us over v86 as far as a Chromium-based backport? Technically, my only "barometer" is my own list of bill-pay and checking/savings/retirement accounts. it's anybody's guess on how much longer v86 is going to still work on my list of web sites. But when the day comes that they stop working (and that day will come!), I don't foresee v92 being "new enough" to bridge the gap back to functional. Only time will tell, it's all "speculation" until then.

  13. I dipped my toe in Win7 and Vista "extended kernels". All it did for me was result in very iffy application stability and an OS that would BSOD when I wasn't even moving the mouse or touching the keyboard. Kinda reminded me of back in my AMD days when I was big into overclocking. There was always a fine line not to cross before rendering your own computer untrustworthy for sensitive use because you never knew when the next BSOD was gonna pop out of nowhere. Speaking solely for myself, I have no plans on ever trying any XP "extended kernel". At least not in the early stages. I'll let others be the guinnea pigs.

  14. Thanks for the good tests ! So looks like the memory "bug" is XP related. Well, from what I remember, it may be due to the fact of your GPU being gen-7 and/or a poor combination with the old drivers, I was able to get the GPU process to boot through the commandline switch --enable-gpu , without it you won't get any Hardware video decode at all ! But then again, my GPU is from the 9th gen. and I use the newer drivers I modded myself. https://msfn.org/board/topic/184056-breakthrough-p2-new-pascal-special-microsoft-nvidia-driver-port-for-vista-x64/page/ There is also my P1 tutorial (more complex) on how to cook new Nvidia drivers for Vista without the extended kernel. Also, VP9 , HEVC, VP8, H265 are still not accelerated because you would need at least GTX1080 or smth like that.

We have our JUSTIFIABLE reasons for using Older NT-Family OSes. I'd still be using Opera 10, if it worked ! And I did - 'till the end. BTW, I don't know how modern Chrome looks on XP, but it still looks the same on Vista (with aero), and it all that matters. So why not use it ? I don't want to get into arguments, but obviously we use a different set of websites. You of all know, I loved this browser when it made sense for me.

  19. Tell me what it's like to fly an F18 Hornet to the edge of space… Dec 17, 2022 The F/A-18 Hornet is a military aircraft used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. It is a supersonic, multirole fighter jet that is capable of performing a variety of missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground attack, and electronic warfare. Flying an F/A-18 Hornet would involve operating the aircraft's controls and systems to navigate and maneuver the plane in the air. It would require a high level of skill and training, as well as the ability to make quick decisions and handle complex situations. Reaching the edge of space in an F/A-18 Hornet would likely require flying at a high altitude, where the air is thin and the conditions are extreme. This would involve navigating through the Earth's atmosphere and possibly encountering extreme temperatures, atmospheric conditions, and other challenges. 22. What about RAM ? Also amost 1GB with an emply page too ? PS. You need this update for DX11 (Windows6.0-KB971512) on Vista for all these to work, it's achievable. I just turn it off intentionally. I only use hardware Skia. Also, you would need to force gpu usage via flags, but the ones you already used is a good start. Check if your chrome runs an additional GPU process.

  24. I second that! I'm sure I know what the answer will be, but this version still doesn't enable my Lenovo Flex 10 to reboot, it still just hangs on the shutdown screen. I guess this isn't something that's being addressed at the moment, but if it could be, I would be very grateful indeed.

  26. I don't think they'll mind if I repost it here, at least temporarily: This isn't the full list, but gives you the idea. Any of those could be reasonable in isolation, but they do add up! In particular, it seems like a bit of overkill to add ads to outgoing messages and impose all the other restrictions! Is it adware or is it feature-limited? Shouldn't be both, IMO. Guess I'll pony up for the paid version.

  27. I recently setup this browser on my Vista SP2 installation. HW compositing only works via D3D9(Ex) (using chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blocklist), but WebGL does not, so I left it disabled , there are errors in D3D9 mode and D3D11 mode doesn't init at all (with --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workarounds since D3D11 is also blocked via that bug list), even OpenGL mode requires D3D11 (error DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL during init), probably D3D11 Win7 got with updates is required. Still, HTML5 videos at decent resolutions are watchable here despite non-functional GPU video decoding. Interestingly, the load on both CPU and GPU is less than on recent Serpent 52, same video codec (h.264) and resolution (1080p60). The GPU doesn't have to switch from the lowest frequency and there's a difference in temperature by 2 degrees celsius in favor of Chrome. It's very interesting because when I go from 1080p60 to 1440p60, it's not watchable on Chrome anymore, but remains watchable in Serpent (with hiccups). Skia Renderer is reported as disabled by default, enabling it in chrome://flags prevents tons of errors from popping up on chrome://gpu page otherwise while browsing. Some people use Skype or Teams in the browser, the latter seems popular in business environment (both WANT you to use Chrome, obviously one can forget official Electron based clients on legacy OS), this browser still loads both, I can only tell that microphone (or at least its port) exposed through Windows recording devices is detected (both on XP and Vista), though couldn't test if the sound goes through since don't have am actual mic at hand. Also found an extension dealing with font contrast if anyone's interested - Chrome Font Super Enhancer, obviously can only mess with CSS properties, but uses some formula to determine the values. Late edit: WebGL1 works partially.

  31. For the dark page rendering use these flags : --enable-features=WebContentsForceDark --force-dark-mode The last one is for the UI in "normal" chrome. But it will not help with the most modern websites, for example imdb. Why ? because the engine of this browser is outdated, yeah , sorry to say it. But if use thee same flags with, say chrome 102 - it will render them dark. About the UI of this chinese one, its' for the author to answer.
