  1. I maintain my sister's (work) computer which runs Win7 SP1 x64; once I upgraded her from Fx 88.0.1 to 89.0, I was most unpleasantly surprised , appalled is the word I'd choose ; she wasn't thrilled by the change, either... Especially on Win7 with aero enabled, the new Fx GUI (fogged tab bar) doesn't blend at all with the OS... TBH, I've stopped getting informed about Mozilla's planned shenanigans some years ago; they did lose me as a user (and a Nightly tester) when they made the decision to drop support for my favourite OS (Vista) ; I only skim the Release Notes every time I update Fx on my sister's box, just to make sure nothing major has been broken (e.g. my sister was very upset when they removed the "Page Info" context menu entry in Fx 88 : she was used to it being there, to aid her get direct links to images on pages; FWIW, you now have to use CTRL+I, until, of course, they kill that too in a future "upgrade"). You are quite right that with every design change, Fx gets worse/crippled ; we are probably just old "geezers" ("advanced users" is the Mozilla term) who have known and appreciated the great Firefox of an era gone-by without return (i.e. when functionality/customiseability/users' wishes were top priorities), the mobile-oriented young Fx users of today are probably more impressed with "trendy" looks and over-simplification... Plus, Mozilla currently employ a small army of well-paid young web/app designers, they have to constantly "re-invent the wheel" GUI-wise, their moto is "fix it until it's broken"; if they stopped messing with Fx's UI, they would have nothing to work on and probably made redundant... Instead, Mozilla keep them on and force into retirement/let go all the highly talented/accomplished "old school" developers of their glorious past... The end is near...

  2. I do (indeed) feel @roytam1 has dome such an amazing job with Serpent 52.9.0 - I've been having no issues with the last two builds and look forward to continued success with this project as well as his other projects going forward :)

  3. I could ask the same of you and the answer would be the same. 1) would take a great deal of time 2) are there enough users interested to warrant that time From what I see (so far), there are only about 6 of us that use 360Chrome as their default and all 6 of us have been able to tweak our own editions into a variation we ourselves are satisfied with. I don't know software distribution rules, I never read the so-called must-read "license" info - I'm not a lawyer and reading "legal-ease" (if that's a word) piques zero interest. But it would be interesting to know if it is "legal" to create an "MSFN Version" of 360Chrome and distribute that to forum-users ??? And then the "6 of us" with that vested interest of this being our default can collaborate as a team and first agree on which build number to use as our base and then create that "MSFN Version".

  5. I can give you a free advice , yes I'm in a good mood today and I still think we can be friends , esp. being from the same generation . Why won't you compare the original files with your modded files from the same version , of course {using any HEX propramme} and publish the results here ? As simple as that.

  6. It's been 9 months or so since I started using 360Chrome as my default browser - I have lost track of the NUMEROUS changes I have made along the way to get it to a stage where I trust it. I do think that there are enough of us here that we should be able to create a version that other users can trust as their default as well. I use XP as my default OS and this is the only browser I have run across that can run in XP while being able to do pretty much everything the "modern web" throws at it. I'm sure we can find exceptions for what it cannot do but those exceptions would also likely not coincide with my "normal usage" so I don't see the need to prove what it can't do. Like I say, it's my default, I have a vested interested in being able to trust it and that's why I monitor this thread.

  7. (offtopic) There is still the preference "browser.menu.showViewImageInfo", which you can set to "true". And the interface can be changed with userChrome.css and userContent.css. See e.g. : https://github.com/black7375/Firefox-UI-Fix. (adds back icons to the "hamburger menu" as well) Screenshot:

  8. Same could be said for windows os 6.x (10 too as it was 6.4 not long ago). GUI fixing until it's broken (10) and made unusable. The problem is there is no alternative; ReactOS is still way off despite the latest activity and if there weren't roytam's Serpent browser, us XP veterans would have nothing.

  9. What is that suspicious updater.exe process ? Even two of them !
    1 point
  10. Not in my experience. There's SEVERAL services that run in the background that are "required" but only show up in Task Manager as "svchost". You may have more services running than you need.

  11. is their any way to completely disable that service? also thanks in advanced for all your help its good to know i can always turn to this forum for help in a dire situation like this

  12. I'd also look at what "services" you have running. I seem to recall that a small handful of services show up as "svchost.exe".
    1 point
  13. That is generally a required process. But you could have something "piggybacking" that process (I don't recall the correct term). Show a screencap of your Task Manager's "Processes" tab and I bet there is something else running that looks "suspicious".

  14. I never was able to fully restore Luna. I created an XP skin from screencaps of Luna buttons and then embedded those into a 360Chrome skin .srx file (which is nothing more than a .zip file).

  15. I run Win XP and therefor before the days of Aero. Whatever restores Aero restores Luna or whatever, at least as far as title bar is concerned.

  17. 1 - I'm sorry, I didn't see where you said about the other files needed to be fixed too. Perhaps I missed something , but you were talking about options and chrome.dll only. 2 - I didn't document it too , but if you think we need a guide , you're welcome to create one and be it's leader . I will publish my own findings there or you can just copy them from here and mention me. I will definitely add on if I remember or find something new. Though, I think 360chrome is not very popular. BTW , do you know how to restore Aero ? I'm tired of that ugly and flat win8/10 skin.

  18. I do recall that one of my fixes was a replace-all and converted all "360.cn" with "broken" (same number of characters). But I cannot remember how many different files (plural) that I made the 360.cn -> broken change in. Maybe we need a "definitive" guide instead of several of us doing changes on our own and we are all doing bits-and-pieces here-and-there? I've monitored connections on my own version and I'm satisfied with my own results - but I did not document all of the changes along the 9 months or so it took me to get here.

  19. ENOUGH !!! We all know your view on this, we are all attempting to create a version for ourselves with all of the telemetry removed. Let us all strive for that end-in-mind and cease with "added commentary" PLEASE !!! NONE of us have denied that telemetry exists, be it Chinese or Russian. Onward and upward, my friend

  20. It's not enough , you need to patch chrome.exe , resources.pak and chrome_elf.dll too. This is what I dug up from my memory . chrome.exe has : http://www.360.cn (2 times , at least , depending on the version) . And some other IPs (inverted , the chinese devs are getting smarter , lol) . And like you said , I don't remember everything what I patched too, I didn't make records , it was kinda on the fly, but I think you will find the rest by yourself. chrome_elf.dll has : (don't remeber , sorry, on the fly patching again, perhaps will remember later) resources.pak has (from what I remember): https://ext.chrome.360.cn https://ext.se.360.cn https://skin.chrome.360.cn http://chrome.360.cn/themes http://warn.se.360.cn (this one is 100% to leak your data). Also , plenty of Gurgle, github telemetry addresses to report "bugs". Again , I'm sure you will find the rest by yourself, with your persistence . And maybe this is why it still connects looking for a new skin and reports to that IP (even after the editing of options.zip) EDIT: Don't forget , the main file chrome.dll has quite a few of inverted IPs too. EDIT 2 : I'm talking about the repacked version . Yes ! None of those were removed by the "talented" russian hackers/packers, who were supposed to "remove telemetry" . Oh , and the chinese DNS , I wrote about earlier, is still there , checked again.

  21. I have the build I will test right now. Do not worry I know how hard is to organize information. I think this browser has a lot of potential. I think the users who abandoned it were because it was Chinese and not secure, but having things too easy isn't that much fun, is it?

  22. Thanks for the links. I have not seen the traffic cited but nor have I dedicated hours/days/weeks to try to catch a needle in a haystack. Regardless, the fewer number of services running on my computer the better - so again, many thanks.

  23. I'm skeptical on the whole thing like I was with Windows 10. I've been using Windows 10 as a daily driver for a year now and even though I'm not fond of it, it drives a lot of the programs I've been running. So while it's not bad, it's not awesome and I've had more problems with it than my beloved Windows 2000. But of course as we've seen time and time again from Microsoft, there are usually a lot of bugs and stability issues with vanilla releases of Windows and don't really improve until the service packs start rolling out. It would be nice to see actual service packs again rather than these continuous rolling updates. Windows 10 never felt finished because of this update method. A small thing I miss is the ability to really tweak the user interface and use real themes. I don't care for the flatness of Windows 10 and prefer above anything, the Windows Classic theme which was completely removed. Even Aero had a bit more character than the Windows 10 theme. So I don't really expect that to change judging from the screenshots I've seen so far. But of course the big thing will be functionality and we'll have to see what the system requirements are to run the OS but I'm assuming they won't be too different from Windows 10. Probably anything that can run Vista smoothly will most likely be able to run Windows 11. For anyone that wants a little more information: https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/3/22466394/microsoft-windows-11-launch-teaser-rumors I would have to agree that launching a whole new Windows would be a smart move, considering that like the article says, new versions of Windows spark more PC sales and considering the whole Covid mess over the past year and a half and many US citizens receiving stimulus checks from the government, it could potentially nudge people who saved some of that money to buy a new computer. That's just my thought though.

  24. Here's one of them, he does Firefox designing on his iPad. Judging by Proton who's surprised? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIGuElYZZzQ It took me about a half a day to restore it mostly back with userChrome but that's thanks to dedicated css writers who had the code ready to go.They knew exactly what was wrong with Proton, why didn't Mozilla? That's another major complaint, options are there forever that people are used to and depend on and the next update they're suddenly gone. I have custom buttons made, including Page Info that maintains the consistency but I also have to rely on the addons not breaking. For the first time since IE6 I'm actually working with another browser. Normally Windows 10 is ignored but after the 21H1 update I began trying out Edge and it's not too bad. So that along with Roy's build may be the future.

  25. I suggest you watch some videos on how to disassemble your exact laptop's model before you do it ! It may not be as easy as it seems and it can get damaged .
