Hi legacyfan. Firefox 52.9 installs its own h264 decoder and does not need a codec pack. (Roytam1’s browser builds need third-party decoders, but I don’t think his instructions call for installation.) Are you trying to watch YouTube videos with Firefox or what exactly?2 points

I have often proposed a solution that I believe very STRONGLY WILL work. The KEY is consumption, CONSUMPTION, CONSUMPTION !!! And how do we CURB it? I personally think there is an EASY solution. According to https://gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/ - the National Average gas price (using the USA as a reference) is $3.035 as of 5/26/21. The solution - DOUBLE IT !!! People won't drive so much if the price were DOUBLED !!! You'll think twice about driving to SIX different grocery stores in ONE day when you CAN get everything at ONE, albeit not your favorite "brand" or whatnot. Drop-dead serious, DOUBLE IT !!! I have a neighbor that drives a Prius (his 3rd one in roughly 11 years). He's a pretentious prick and I lived here for about two years before a different neighbor finally explained why this prick would snub his nose at me every time I drove by. It was because his Prius-persona cared very little for the 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country I was driving at the time and its 15 mpg city / 21 mpg highway. So I literally backed him into a corner and lied to him with him not knowing I knew his thoughts about my Jeep, I pretended to be interested in buying a Prius and asked about his fuel economy. His face lit up like it was the Fourth of July (another USA reference, as far as that goes). I asked, "How often do you have to fill up?" He was PROUD to proclaim that he only fills up once a week. That is when I "let him have it" and informed him that I work from a home office and ONE tank of gas in my "cheep Jeep" lasts me SIX WEEKS and I can fairly easily stretch it to TWO MONTHS !!! The expression on his face was a true "Kodak Moment". He now at least "smiles and waives" when I drive by instead of snubbing his nose at me. Long story short, there is a "psychological effect" to driving a vehicle that gets 50 miles to the gallon - YOU DRIVE MORE BECAUSE YOU HAVE AN UNCONSCIOUS FEELING THAT YOU ARE SAVING THE PLANET. Where in REALITY you very well may be CONSUMING MORE and you just can't put 1 and 2 together to SEE IT.2 points

That function requires at least Win7: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/processtopologyapi/nf-processtopologyapi-setthreadgroupaffinity While you can install 4.8 (with "workarounds") on Vista SP2, I'm not convinced myself it works flawlessly all of the times and for all .NET FW 4 requiring apps... I can't help you, sadly, all I can testify is that Handbrake 1.0.7 (2017040900) - 32bit launches fine here on my Vista SP2 x86 machine with .NET FW 4.6.1 (32-bit):2 points

Climate change is a natural process but all current science points to the current trend of very, very very fast changes being directly tied to the very very very fast and large increase of carbon (and to an extent, methane) emissions. Studies show, that no, this warming would not have happened without help. The earth is capable of warming and cooling on its own, yes. But not this fast. We have already made irreversible changes because of this (greenland, antartica, etc) but it is still mostly capable of being stopped. Just stopping emissions does not do it. The carbon also needs to be removed from the atmosphere. But if we can put it there, it is possible. Expensive? Probably. Neccesary? Yes. More expensive to do nothing? Very, VERY much yes. The earth was naturally on its way to cooling again relatively soon, but now that the carbon system has been disrupted there is absolutely not a way that can happen naturally for a very very long time, short of some unprecented solar event that somehow reduces the power of the sun, or pushes the earths orbit further. And, by the way, we do have approximate records going back a long time thanks to ice core and rock sampling, among other methods. There are reasons virtually every scientist thinks climate change is pretty much squarely our own fault.2 points

Not exactly what you're looking for, but you can make a bookmarklet like this: Name: "Wayback Archive" Location: javascript:void(window.open('https://web.archive.org/web/*/'+location.href)); (will work in any browser) Try for example with: https://www.ghacks.net/2 points

Oh, there are plenty of things to improve on a Windows XP system. Disable 80 % of all Windows services under msconfig (which you can start by clicking on the Start button, then "Run" (I think that how the menu, where programs can be started, was called in english...). But you have to be aware of your own needs, which can differ from other users. So go through everything, that is listed there, and use your serach engine of choice to understand, what each service does. Then ask yourself: Do I need that? Automatic network configuration? Designs? That depends on you. Speaking of designs, go to the Control Panel and click on "System", where all the system information is displayed, computer name, processor, stats... there are a lot of things to be set. Do you need a system recovery, or do you do this by yourself? Consider this can take a lot of hard disk space, if you let your Windows clone your drive settings for you. Remote Desktop? There are external programs for that, if you need a remote service. Anyways, there is a category probably called "Extended"? There you can set many graphical options. Your desktop might not look as soft, it might lack animations, but it will perform quicker.2 points

That’s another program that requires .NET Framework: https://neosmart.net/wiki/easybcd/system-requirements/ Unless you have a program that actually requires .NET 4.8 (and actually works), downgrading your .NET to a version that actually supported Vista (4.6.0 officially, 4.6.1 unofficially) would seem to be called for. I also wonder if you have installed the extended kernel? (This is not an extended kernel support thread, but MSFN does have such a thread.)1 point

Okay, that makes sense. That puts you right around $7.51 US Dollars per US Gallon. I'm showing average annual salary in Finland at 56,300 EUR per year which is $68,650 US Dollars per year. For the Midwest area of the US that I am located, the average annual salary is $68,876 US Dollars per year - so you could say we are basically EQUAL. The average gas price here is $2.93 US Dollars per US Gallon. That tells me TWO things - 1) I'll agree that you are paying too much, and 2) My gas prices SHOULD BE DOUBLED1 point

Yeah, politically, it would never work, because no politician has the guts to do that, but that's what we need to do. And tax electricity too in equal proportions, because electric vehicles are no more innocent. Nothing comes for free, nothing. People think it's okay to consume all these resources like water, because they will always be there (and even water won't). I have a bunch of phones here, the two main ones on my desk are from 1957 and sometime in the 60s (the date on the second one says it was refurbished in 1992). I have other phones from the 70s and 80s as well. All of them work perfectly, much better than the plastic junk people have to pay $1000 for every three years to keep "upgrading" to the next "phone" that sounds awful as hell. My stereo, which has tape/CD/aux/AM/FM all in one, is 22 years old, somewhere around there. It's starting to show its age in that the buttons on the unit don't work so well (I always use the remote), and the CD player's starting to skip, but I mostly keep it on radio, and it works great. Wouldn't have it any other way. I have two monitors on my desk, the smaller secondary one is an early LCD monitor that's also around 20 years old. It had flickering problems for a while but after a few years in the basement, with brightness all the way down, it works reasonably well. It works, what am I going to do, trash it? No, works fine, I'll keep using it until the pixels fall out. Got an electronic piano with a floppy disk reader in it, dates to 2003 - again, 19 years old now. But it works perfectly fine, except the E key below middle C has been stuck now for the past half year. But otherwise, works great, what should I do, get another piano we don't need? Got an MP3 player that has 128 MB of storage and who know's how old it is. Like a lot of my electronics, it's hand me down - literally. But I only use it when travelling, and it can play enough hours to make it all the way through one cycle, so it's all I need. Why would I replace it? Sometimes, it seems like GDP is a better measure of environmental destruction than progress.1 point

I used to disable services many years ago on old PC that ran XP, but I wasn't impressed. Was much happier with results from overclocked CPU and GPU. XP appears inherently slow in some areas. Not long ago I was decompressing files from external USB HDD to internal HDD, some FreeArc packed stuff. The overall impact on computer responsiveness was great. Note that the destination disk wasn't even the one containing the OS. Was browsing the internet (at the slower pace, page loads being delayed by few seconds there and there) and when I wanted to restore minimized KeePass to look something up in my KeePass database, watched its window sloooooowly repaint (cca. 7 seconds). It should have been instant. Then there's Direct3D. Anything D3D that runs in a window will slow down as soon as a single pixel intersects with another screen that is not the one it was bound to. Maybe the D3D problem still exists on Vista/7 with XPDM graphics drivers? Don't know about that case. XP being XP I guess.1 point

also blocking UPNP on network helps. Otherwise even javascript can open port from firewall even if blocked it manually. You do not need UPNP to 95% of things.1 point

bicycle depends if lot snow and roads have not been cleared yet then might be hard but even then can walk. Old army bicycles are option for cold endurance. Full steel frame, wide tires, no gears or handbrakes. I used to have one of those then did mistake and changed it aluminum toy that went to warranty once already since busted frame... plan get another of those army bikes some day. What comes to walking just get one of those thermal bags to phones and buy army winter jacket and gloves militaries sells as spares (british, finnish, german army atleast do so). With those can walk without worries even at near -40c to work and back. I did so during this year and 2 winters ago with bicycle. Finnish sisu is not just myth, it is reality But during summer we have warm weather allowing better use bicycles. Feels good to only use T-Shirt when bit over month ago still had heavy army jacket and gloves1 point

With bicycles it's like with computers. Old stuff is heavy and slower, but much more simple, durable and reliable. Here in Germany, the low-price point is reached for bicycles from the early 90s to 2000s. I've bought three steel frames for 10 Euros each! Every hobo can afford that. Of course bicycles that cheap need some service, but the bicycle mechanisms are quite accessable. With a set of elastic belts, quite a lot can be transported on bicycles, too. I think bicycles as a daily transportation vehicle deserve more respect. I save a fortune through not owning a car. But it's more hard donkey work on the other hand... it's a tough fight sometimes! I was once a courier in the snow, but only at minus 10°C (14°F). How does the situation look like in Finland or Russia? What can the human body endure? Are bicycles even a spark of an option there? (question goes to @Mr.Scienceman2000) Previous posts mentioned the Toyota Prius and the old Volvo, let's take the 240 as an iconic example. Both cars get special notices from me. The Prius as the early hybrid car it was, was tried out by quite a lot of drivers here, let's say 10 years ago. People did give it a chance. But now? They're almost gone all! The Prius didn't last. Quite different is the Volvo 240, appearing like a big, bouncy battleship on the streets. The opposite of aerodynamically efficent. All I can say is, that currently there are more Volvo 240 than Toyota Prius on our streets here (which wasn't the case around 2010).1 point

You're most welcome ! I would also suggest to disable everything regarding remote access to your XP computer and block ports 23, 89, 107 , 81, 82 , 135 and 445 with your firewall . These are the most used for attacks. https://www.lifewire.com/disable-remote-access-in-windows-xp-2487711 https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/disable-remote-desktop https://www.technlg.net/windows/remote-desktop-terminal-services-how-to/1 point

Also , may remove all keyboards and languages you don't need to save space on your HDD/SSD. I usually remove all Asian (like chinese and the such) and cyrillic (like rusian) because they take a lot of space and we don't need them , obviously. Do not delete Dutch , German and Swedish keyboards , who knows what future may bring .1 point

He is right , not much to gain . I usually remove all unneeded with nLite before the installation . These are the services I remove (completely) . You may just copy/paste into your nLite preset Last Session.ini. ;# Services # Alerter Automatic Updates Error Reporting Messenger QoS RSVP Quality of Service (QoS) Remote Registry Telnet Text Services Framework WebClient P.S. I'm not sure if you use "Automatic Updates", but I think they don't work regardless.1 point

Dear @IXOYE vandal-1.1.0-fx.xpi is yet another Firefox-targeting Web Extension that will not install on Serpent, because it's a type of WE called an "id-less" one... I have in the past, over many occasions, explained ad nauseam the "why" and "how-to" install such WEs on Serpent... https://msfn.org/board/search/?&q=id-less&search_and_or=or&sortby=relevancy For a more technical analysis on the "why", https://msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my-browser-builds-part-1/page/147/?tab=comments#comment-1164701 For a more "practical" read, https://msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my-browser-builds-part-1/page/100/?tab=comments#comment-1159013 https://msfn.org/board/topic/180462-my-browser-builds-part-2/page/133/?tab=comments#comment-1189182 perhaps could be of help... Bottom line is, you have to edit the extension's manifest.json file so as to add a gecko-id block; repackage and then it'll install in St52... St52 != FxESR 52.9.0, especially with regards to WE APIs, so installing in St52 won't guarantee perfect functioning... And, please, DO NOT follow the advice given by my friend @ArcticFoxie ; transplanting a Fx profile onto St52 (or, worse, to St55) is a sure recipe for profile corruption, often times beyond repair! People, for the millionth time since I've been a member of this community, FIREFOX 52.9.x and SERPENT 52.9.0 are two different applications that have diverged so much over time, that their profiles are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE anymore (without risk of data corruption); just don't do it! Always start with a fresh St52 profile and only transfer vital parts such as bookmarks and, where applicable, passwords... Re-install crucial extensions as needed...1 point

i don't think PatchPE is enough, as there are also some missing kernel32.dll functions which need to be patched. In any case, you should be able to run 8u241 as it doesn't need patching at all.1 point

I know Mandarin and by one chance I heard from zhihu.com (for those of you who don't know: it's Chinese counterpart of quora.com) that some simplified Chinese Windows XP users can still receive old Windows updates after SHA-1's switching off. But "can receive old SHA-1 updates" != "support continues and extends to a certain future date". I don't think extended support to 2021 is true for simplified Chinese Windows Vista users residing in China; dunno what source of the information is from. I did comment to some Windows Vista related posts on zhihu.com, that Windows Vista can install Server 2008 "R1" (or "original", if you prefer to call that) updates to receive several years of potential extra support. I do have a Compaq laptop that is used to run Windows Vista Home Basic and it was a simplified Chinese edition in my permanent home in China. However my relative (accompanied with a computer repair guy who commonly believes that "Vista is bad, a bugged OS in MS history and you should replace it") ditched the hard drive and installed an SSD with Windows 7 on it. So I can't test that anymore.1 point

@burd : Many thanks for that second screengrab of yours The list transcribed from the image is: KB4040973 KB4041778 KB4578963 KB4597239 KB4600945 KB5001848 However, and this is something I had completely forgotten about , these KB numbers ARE NOT DIRECTLY indexed (and thus findable) inside MUC, because they constitute parts of larger bundles/RollUps... For instance, it would appear that the last ever Security Only Update for 4.6 on Vista before its EOL (in April 2017) was KB4014558; searching for that in MUC doesn't return any result; but that update was/is part of KB4014988 (released on Apr 10th 2017): April, 2017 Security Only Update for .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 4.5.2, 4.6 on Windows Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2 (KB4014988) inside of which is found as file "ndp46-kb4014558-x86_dc321d638ffa0c672a555b9e8e37e52994c71253.exe" ... So, while that list of 6 installed updates is, no doubt, something to go by, it won't be that easy/quick to locate (inside MUC) the bundles they belong to... Yes, KB4040973 was part of 2017-09 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 4.5.2, 4.6 on Windows Server 2008 SP2 update i.e. KB4041086; even M$ themselves confused WS2008SP2 with WS2008R2SP1, as the following depicts: ... I have "access" to a friend's Win7 SP1 64-bit older laptop, that she hardly uses any more; I had her purposefully freeze the .NET FW installed there on version 4.6.1, which was/is supported by WU on that OS of hers; I instructed her to do pretty much the same thing I kindly asked @burd, below is the produced screengrab: Despite the similarities with Vista, this is actually on Win7 SP1 x64, where 4.6.1 was never updated further (WU is currently offering 4.8 for installation) and which has a working WU, minus, of course, ESU for Win7 SP1... So, it appears, at least on that specific machine, that 4.6.1 was never offered through WU any more updates (outside of ESU that is) past KB4040973 (Security and Quality Rollup) in Sep 2017... When I find some extra time in the coming weekend, I might try to track down MUC links for the rest 5 updates in @burd 's list...1 point

I don't think there's any point in leaving unallocated space on an SSD, or an empty partition, it's physically pretty much like using RAM or a memory stick. It certainly wouldn't make any difference to the read/write speed I wouldn't have thought, because of the way it works. There should be some ideas here and here on TRIM programs for XP. As I have a multi-boot machine I rely on Windows 10 doing the TRIM on my NTFS drives. It won't work on FAT32 drives but I have a DOS (!) manual TRIM program for that courtesy of the late great Rudolph Loew!1 point

7950GT is faster then 7800GTX. 7900GTO is faster then 7950GT. 7900GTX is faster then 7900GTO. -------------------------------------------- 7950 GX2 is a 2 x 7950GT but only one half is working in win98, so basically this is 1 7950GT with 50MHz lower core clock speed. 7950 GX2 is a good card but i think there is no benefits from GX2 cards for 9x users, but if you allready have one you won't have to puchase other card.1 point
