IE (or the components within it) became intertwined into the OS perhaps as far back as IE4. And as time went on and when the OS came with it, more and more functionality we pushed through the IE engine. Windows 10 is a giant kludge of updates going back years as MS has never started over. Layers upon layers of things added on to get where we are today. Many of the features from old OSes are still in Windows 10, even if they are no longer used or not apparent. We are basically at a point where Windows would not operate if the Internet Explorer components were fully removed from the system.3 points

So I am not only "crazy" to slap ssd to netbook. I got Asus EEEPC 900 with 900mhz celeron M. Installed 256gb kingston UV500 Msata ssd (which was cheapest Msata SSD here) with adapter to it propieraty SSD connector. Cpu cannot run many videos or codecs fine but it makes very nice small portable movie player with Kodi with dvd quality videos. It also sounds like drill if do anything using cpu due fan desing.3 points

thats because there is still containing preprocessor directives while upstream has them removed earlier.3 points

They probably wont change, which is why most people who want control of their PC have to chug along with older Windows, deal with 10 or move to Linux distros like Mint or Arch, since those are by smaller companies. Canonical fell to what Microsoft started doing.2 points

FWIW my very underpowered Asus netbook's performance noticeably improved when I changed the hard drive for an SSD. If nothing else, I assume that it makes swapfile usage pretty much as fast as RAM access. I never actually benchmarked it, but in real use it seemed significantly more responsive. Sadly the processor is still rubbish, so I can't do much else!2 points

Same here, only way access on switch control panel on web is using Active X and Internet Explorer. Could use old FF if it could work on java but no. Only where need use it. Atleast they got rid of outlook 2003 web and Project server 2003 since needed Internet Explorer and had some issues on newer IE. Web is built on open standards but open standards are not compatible with internet explorer. I hope we would finally get some proper open web standard and not invent new ones every day (like google does now causing sites on other browsers/older Google chrome to break after every new HTML5 standard they make) that is most annyoing thing about unneccessary depencies. Whenever they drop IE it might even render some games unusable. Internet Explorer depency to everything was huge mistake in my opinion. Outlook 97 did fine with no IE2 points

Time to laugh! Internet Explorer is still supported! https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/internet-explorer-11 Some web applications only work with Internet Explorer. I have to deal with one at work every week. A big company that may have found it easier to put some cash on Microsoft's table to make them continue to support their old browser, than rewriting their applications.2 points

i just found an archive of this forum from 2017 and i doesn't even look like it does now back then here is the wayback link to nostalgia ----->http://web.archive.org/web/20170310182332/http://www.msfn.org/board/1 point

It is only on the original release of Entertainment Pack or vol 1. There are floppy images on archive.org that contain it such as this one: https://archive.org/details/MicrosoftEntertainmentPackForWindowsVolumeOneGateway2000Edition1990 Here is a link to the only v1 I can find on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/3244658328781 point

It’s not speedstep but have you installed the 2k dual core registry fix? That may be causing part of the hotter temperature. My D630 runs fairly cool with the fix but I think my CPU is a T8 something or other1 point

I totally agree with you....just don't think Microsoft will change..... bookie321 point

As always thanks for all input. It would be cool @Gansangriff if there was still a modern printer that could natively print in Windows 98 without piggybacking off a networked or multi-boot system. If you're still following, does your web interface only allow PDF printjobs or can you print other file types, such as Open Office *.doc or specialty graphic software image files? In response to your query, if my Windows 98 system breaks there's probably enough parts in the basement to keep Windows 98 running on real hardware until my body decays. But yes i too wouldn't pay for this hardware and would just 'upgrade' to whatever is freely available. The world needs more scavengers. Nature does this naturally, mankind does a p*** poor job. Since setting up my whopping $25 CDN 64-bit system (latest browser, banking) the old but entirely functional 1.8 GHz AMD (not even SSE2 capable) was moved into the loft as a perfect media centre. Seems a good way to keep old hardware relevant and productive. As probably most households now, most news, media and education is via computer so the computers get a good workout and the old televisions, DVD players and VCRs are only used occasionally. Recently picked up a free 17" IBM LCD monitor (2005 vintage) via Kijiji. I don't go out of my way and just check in once in a while but three 17-19" LCD monitors were picked up free in the last few years. So here a combination CRT and LCD monitors are used. Still trying to desperately use up the old CRTs but even my problematic monitor just won't die. It fails to lightup and conks out during runtime at least twice a week but i just rock it a bit and picture restored. If The Fonz maneuver ever totally fails i will do a final check for a broken solder and then it will finally get recycled. My computing needs are basic @UCyborg and have no need for f.lux type software, not sure what's out there for vanilla Windows 98. My computing space is artificially lit day and night so nothing fancy needed. Rarely i adjust monitor brightness as needed, this old 19" ViewSonic CRT even provides colour adjustments. My Windows 98 system has an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX100/200 graphic card (32 MB, NVIDIA driver 24FEB2005) with lots of adjustments for colour profiles, vibrance, brightness, gamma, etc but i never use them. AFAIK @Bracamonte, YouTube in vanilla Windows 98 no longer exists in the traditional sense. Since YouTube made changes these old browsers can no longer view YouTube pages. I custom coded a Bash script for Windows 9x using a custom Cygwin-Lite install. It allows searching YouTube and downloading most videos via a COMMAND.COM window. The project is discontinued but you could code your own. If you use kernel extensions there is a youtube-dl Megapack, named something like that, that has an updated Python, youtube-dl and other goodies - please query on a non-vanilla-Windows 98 thread. https://msfn.org/board/topic/181417-windows-9x-web-helper-9xweb-discontinued/1 point

Please tell us about the performance of your old computer with the SSD being built in. SSDs can perform magic, but how much will it speed up such an old laptop?1 point

NNN4NT5 - it’s included with BWC’s extended kernel1 point

And I am considering this mobo. Love the design and it has my favourite PCI , not the wobbly PCIe. Two of them ! https://static.bhphoto.com/images/images500x500/1590428746_1560318.jpg1 point

Agreed 100% VistaLover - Very grateful for your projects; Roy Just wanted to also say.. I'm a huge fan of Serpent 52.9.0 and this build didn't disappoint by any means, and although you've been hounded to 'rebrand', I understand this IS your own fork. Its my default browser 2nd to New Moon 281 point

On sister's Win7 SP1 64-bit laptop, I updated official Pale Moon unstable to the latest 32-bit build: Version: 29.0.3a1 (32-bit) (2021-05-07) [buildID=20210507130743] and that build was compiled from following sources Platform module: uxp-master-git-20210506-ge7e6356 Pale Moon source: pm-master-git-20210507-g2ad022d The platform (official UXP) source does include 6f707bd which is equivalent to a4b0f33 in the custom branch of your UXP fork... The thing is, the AOM (about:addons) in the above official PM unstable build works as intended, i.e. no additional patching of 6f707bd is required, whereas to get AOM working in latest NM28 you had to patch a4b0f33 according to 8eb3a27 ; @roytam1 : Why was NM28 (and several other UXP forks) affected by "upstream" changes, while their own app was "not messed up" ? Just wanting to get a clearer understanding of things in a somewhat deeper level, nothing more... As always, thanks for your on-going efforts into supplying browsers that still keep XP and Vista kicking for a tad longer ...1 point

Samsung 860 EVO appears to be a SATA SSD. As for whether there is something particular with the disk that will make it so that it will not function properly in the notebook, it is difficult to tell. I can't really find anyone trying to use the two things together. On the surface I would say there would be no issue, but know that saying this isn't an endorement that it will work. The one thing that I can tell you about this is that your notebook's drive bay was specifically designed for whatever size HDD it was sold with. Be aware that some SSDs are actually thinner than HDDs. The difference may be that if there are any pads on the drive chassis (if it uses one) they may not be sufficient to keep the SSD from moving. You may need to use additional padding. You won't know this until you get the drive in hand and try to install it.1 point

I don't see why it wouldn't work, my motherboard is from 2009 and works with SSDs absolutely fine, but not at their maximum capable transfer speed of course. An SSD should appear to the system exactly the same as a conventional drive. One of my SSDS is 465GB and there is no problem with it. All my SSDs are Sandisk, but I can't think that the brand would make any difference. You would need a program to TRIM the drive though, as you're probably aware, you should never run legacy defrag programs on an SSD! Windows XP cannot TRIM drives like later versions of Windows of course, as SSD support was never added.1 point

Nothing has changed, no signatures have disappeared, neither for the drivers, nor for updates. It looks like the panic was in vain.1 point

Not really . On its page on tetris wiki (which I referred earlier for possible alternatives): https://tetris.wiki/Tetris_(Microsoft_Entertainment_Pack_for_Windows) More info and some screenshots here: http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Tetris_(Windows) Interestingly enough, it seemingly bears the logo of "Bogus Software": https://web.archive.org/web/20110415064416/http://www.download-central.ws:80/Win16/Tetris/Windows/ And it is seemingly also known as Wintris: https://everything2.com/title/Wintris but licensing/sub-licensing apart the game is definitely written by Dave Edson: https://books.google.it/books?id=O5j5DAAAQBAJ&pg=PT62&lpg=PT62&dq=tetris+"dave+edson"+microsoft&source=bl&ots=MWD8s938S6&sig=ACfU3U1R63e9xC48wsQdNw_vsmefmzz0yg&hl=it&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiSg6Gw2rnjAhUEyqQKHXBmA6oQ6AEwDXoECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=tetris "dave edson" microsoft&f=false http://www.kraigbrockschmidt.com/mystic-microsoft-05/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-edson-89991620/ jaclaz1 point

I have found it. The Tetris that was in the Entertainment Pack and the Best of Pack is not the original Tetris. It is a port of Mirrorsoft's DOS version, which was the first official release of the game on PC, the first overall being on micros. The info refers to it as Tetris 2.00. and is official insofar that Mirrorsoft sub-licensed the rights to Microsoft, who then put their copyright on it as you can see here: https://harddrop.com/wiki/File:Windtetrisstart.png1 point
