  2. I've been using that for several years now too, it works very well, and they say it will continue to receive pattern updates for the foreseeable future. It isn't free though. The free version of MB still works on XP too AFAIK, but has no real-time scanning.

  4. Not only fiverr.com, but also fiverrcdn.com should be allowed, and browser be restarted after changing about:config to reproduce the hang. update: I was about to say thank @XPerceniol I have narrowed down to "javascript.options.baselinejit;true", but suddenly I cannot reproduce the hang by all means. Strange, but also good for I do not want to turn that option off: it slows js executing about 10 times according to sunspider test.

  5. Does the date April 11 ring any bells? Today is the Fourth Anniversary of Windows Vista’s EOL. (Of course the 11th fell on a Tuesday in 2017.) I had joined MSFN a few months earlier, figuring (quite correctly) that this would be the last place on the internet where Windows Vista diehards would congregate. Microsoft Security Essentials was nagging me about the approach of Doomsday. I was in a very fatalistic mood, and selected a screen name and avatar to match. Oddly enough, I now feel sentimental about those days. Getting back on topic, VistaLover pointed out in a March 31 post in the XP forum that McAfee antivirus products old enough to work on Vista or XP have reportedly been unable to receive definition updates since January 1, 2021.

  7. 8 GB is absolutely fine ! Try to get these services disabled . Oh , and I wouldn't touch the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager, like they suggested there. The rest is fine. You can always switch them back on.

  8. okay it seems like you're not objective cause you are windows 7 hater (I looked on your profile) my core 2 duo t5870 is 2 ghz at base clock! I simply asked why are you recommending vista when we can't use it? (security reasons and office) I don't have any experience in kernel stuff or programming. so extending something isn't my cup of coffee. I would buy new laptop if they were in stock (I already said that) like paying 800 dollars for pentium laptop is something I simply refuse to do. We already upgraded the ram to 4gb so it seems to be little better and I'll try to reinstall windows 7 32bit as you suggested and I'll not update it. (even though that will limit my ram to 3 gb and something?) Please try to not attack me for having older laptop... I mean you could be windows 7 hater but this was inadequate.

  9. First off , go to system config/services and disable : superfetch , webclient , indexing , read more here. Also , what is your RAM amount ? https://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/windows-xp-vista/how-to-disable-unnecessary-services-in-windows-vista/

  10. I know for a fact that the component package version hasn’t changed in two years, and it most likely hasn’t changed since 3.5.1 was released on May 8, 2018. Therefore I cannot take Malwarebytes seriously when they claim to be “committed to continue support for Windows XP and Vista“ - but don’t get me wrong: Definition updates are certainly better than nothing! Since this thread has been bumped, I will summarize some of the bad news I’ve heard in the last several months: As pointed out by VistaLover in a recent post, versions of McAfee antivirus products that were old enough to work on XP/Vista have reportedly been unable to receive definition updates since January 1, 2021. Earlier in this thread, legacy versions of ESET were occasionally mentioned as an option. Unfortunately, an ESET article indicates that SHA-2 support is now extremely important. If we have any recent ESET users here, please tell us about your experiences! (As I have mentioned once or twice in the Vista forum, ESET 12.x might perhaps be an option for a Vista system with certain Server 2008 updates adding SHA-2 support.) Norton had threatened to cut off definition updates for their XP/Vista “maintenance mode” version after February 28, 2021, but evidently changed its mind by March 8. I don’t recommend or even know much about Webroot, but have come across their official download page for the final XP-compatible version. None of the products I mention above have free versions!? My own preference and suggestion would still be Avast Free 18.8 (or equivalent AVG version, which has the same engine). Of course that would not prevent you from using Malwarebytes Free for on-demand scanning if you wish. I know that Dave-H couldn’t use Avast on one of his XP systems, which is too bad because testing by independent labs showed that Avast Free was significantly more effective than Malwarebytes Premium or Webroot, and nearly as good as paid versions of Kaspersky, Norton, etc. (Kaspersky Free has never been tested AFAIK.)

  11. Hi, Why do you save go back to vista? Why is it obvious? (I don't want to sound rude or anything but this is something very different to opinions on internet) We need windows 7 on there because internet banking stopped working on windows vista and most websites no longer loaded up correctly. SP1 is needed for microsoft office 2016 (office 2010 stopped being able to read modern documents that my mom needs to open because of work) She could click on anything so having an updated windows is important for her. She does not play any games (I have my gaming tower for that). I could try windows 8 because what I've read here is that it is the fastest modern os idk honestly. Upgrade is now out of question because of shortages.

  12. I've only used it a few times (live Ubuntu DVD mostly) and while I was able to surf the web, hardly anything else worked lol .. but that was (maybe) 2015ish. I find this to be a bit disturbing to read abut the future of windows ... ugh https://dev.to/bellons91/will-windows-and-linux-be-merged-in-the-future-2pjb https://www.zdnet.com/article/linux-based-windows-makes-perfect-sense/ So here's to the future everyone. On 2nd thought, when I give up this old Chevrolet Chevette here (hehe) it might be time to hook up my rotary phone and use an abacus as my main OS Regardless, hope you are at least learning something (and enjoying) trying out all those Operating systems :)

  13. MSFN is a strong and healthy community that stays on it's course ! Yeah , on it's right course. Though , I do not like the word community , community .... communism ...

  14. I am not. Ask the Linux community! (before or after joining it) they will no know much better than people on MSFN. jaclaz

  15. I guess that more than invisible, comments might make the topic as visible as the Windows 7 extended kernel in its current status (non-existing). When (if) someone will ever start writing an extended kernel for 7, I am pretty sure that you (and everyone else) will be able to make requests/post lists of missing functions. jaclaz

  17. Closed poll. Forum moderation/administration is not up to community vote. Typically we would like to limit the amount of pinned topics to at most 1/4 of default view of forum index. Our typical way to manage this is to create FAQ/Important Threads topics such as in win9x: https://msfn.org/board/topic/95815-important-stickified-pinned-959898-seme-topics/ and in winPE: https://msfn.org/board/topic/131897-new-win-pe-faq/ However, this is managed by the "forum leader" and is not usually handled by globals or supers. I believe the XP forum leader is @LoneCrusader

  18. Here are a few I've found to be must-have's. Disable AutoRefresh -- https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/16079-disable-autorefresh/code Halt! -- https://userscripts-mirror.org/scripts/review/125995 I personally use the one-liner version v0.0 but replace whitelist @include's to run on ALL http and https because I want the OPPOSITE effect of blacklist versus whitelist, ie RUN ON ALL until I tell it not to. Disable Javascript setInterval and timers -- https://kplug-list.kernel-panic.narkive.com/65G6iuYC/disable-javascript-setinterval-and-timers Redirector (v0.1 post at bottom of page) -- https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3168944/how-can-i-redirect-some-page-with-javascript-in-greasemonkey

  20. Glad it works now. The command window is separate process you can close WinNTSetup while it's running. The Wofcompress.exe tool is merge in and can be also used from command line: WinNTSetup_x64.exe wofcompress.

  22. One year ? I can't imagine how one year old one (or even zero-year old) opens a CD box , places it onto a CD tray and just enjoys techno music , not to mention going to a club in 1999.

  23. windows 7 on Core 2 duo vs Windows 10 on Ryzen threadripper test likely like most do. Refer that to many users who had old non maintained core2duo laptop with dying hdd and windows 7 bloated with oem bloat and then bought brand new pc with i7 and nvme ssd and praised how much faster win10 is than win7. Hardware got nothing to do with it of course

  24. It's just not possible . Windows Vista would be the fastest . XP is too old and simply does miss most of the things needed today : DWM , DX10/11 , HD Audio support , like DTS-HD MA and the such (please forgive me , XP-lovers , I really tried ). Windows 7 is super-duper slow and should be mocked wherever possible , maybe even slower than 8/10 , I agree. Windows 8/8.1 is a mobile OS , so absolutely another story.
