  1. I wanna back with @dencorso . I can go a long way describing the ugliest things that 21st century has brought. But I guess that makes no sense, since you most likely don't remember the 20th. I totally agree with him about "oversensitive generation" , I have a girlfriend , almost 20 years yonger than me , and she is so oversensitive , oh boy . Literally about everything that previous generations wouldn't even notice . But you're right , we should keep this topic clean , so I'll refrain from it . I'm just saying that your "solution" is not working in my case (but @dencorso is right again , you shouldn't delete , it could be somewhat useful to others), and the instructions that were given by our guru @win32 (local , no updates after April 2017 , etc ) are 100% bullet proof. By the way , how things are going under this "virus" "lockdown" in your favourite 21st century ? (rhetorical question) "lockdown" is a prison term , but that seems to be ok with most of young people/millenials ?! (rhetorical too) Rhetorical means you don't have to write an answer , so I'm not waiting for one . I really hope you'll keep in balance after reading this, please don't get nervous.

  3. That's *NOT* the right attitude at all: when one posts something one deems useful, but then nobody else seems to notice it nor react to it, that content ought to be let stand, nonetheless. We here post to help others, even if we never get any feedback on it, let alone any kudos. To delete the content out of spite for being ignored is very much frowned upon here (even if it's quite typical of the worst the 21st century has brought us: an oversensitive generation).

  4. I'd rather recommend than listening to the FBI but to upgrade your very unique Brain.exe instead. It's the best anti-virus out there. The only downside is, that Brain.exe can't be bought for money and downloading it is impossible, too. It must be fed proper knowledge to grow. And then one day, you will be capable of using the old operating systems online without running into a wall. Would I recommend to average users who use their brain on other things than computers to use Windows XP and Windows 7 for example? No, because that would put them easily in danger. But if you know, what you are doing, then you'll be able to avoid the problems. Use a hardware firewall, that you can configure. Block unwanted Javascripts. Block everything, you didn't ask for. Don't click on everything that sounds like a promising help to your problems. Learn to read links before clicking on them. These things. Also consider that something like Windows XP got more secure over time, as less and less people were using it. Windows 7 is still a very attractive target for mean hackers with circa 15% market share (2020).

  5. Well, for one, you can easily change the firewall rules from the OS. For example, in Windows you can create/modify/delete rules in the Windows Adv Firewall with netsh, or using an API call. Certainly a hardware firewall isn't some magic foolproof thing, but a virus or malicious actor is less likely to be able to change rules on a dedicated firewall vs the one that is just a program on your computer.

  7. Hello This is Sergey Tkachenko of Winaero. The file on my website is a genuine file which was available in this thread at the moment of the writing of the above article. Me, or anybody else, didn't modify a single byte of it. However, following the Reddit thread here, it has come to my knowledge that the most recent app version has a variable renamed in the source code. That hadn't been done by me. The site still offers the file I got from this thread by that time. If it is a problem, I can update the archives. However, I am pretty surprised that the Reddit topic starter is accusing me for integrating remote management code into the app. That is total BS, and he didn't provide any proof. Some other guy on Reddit has decompiled both binaries, and found only two differences. One is a removed "using" directive. Another one is a renamed variable (structure -> LUID_AND_bla bla bla) in the TokenPrivilege routine. The version I have on winaero can be downloaded by the link https://winaero.com/how-to-uninstall-and-remove-edge-browser-in-windows-10/ It can be audited by anyone. I am not a Reddit user, but hell, I think I should join it and report the whole thread as a try to ruin my reputation.

  9. I think you right-click on GetThreadId to change the name. Try LocalUnlock; like GetThreadId, it takes one parameter, then returns zero and sets the LastError upon failure.

  10. @Koishi Komeiji Wow that last paragraph is so true. This is no mere conspiracy, its for real. Bothers me. If I decide to have kids gotta show them the outside worlds greatness, no social media needed. Wasn't in the town in its hey day but Nirvana visited it back in the 90s, was a big deal for a smaller town for sure. Place was a complete dive around a cornfield haha.

  13. on windows xp one can enable IPV6 support and generally I recommend using an ISP supporting IPV6 IPV4 is so crowded its easy for it to be exploited by fly by hackers. Vista and seven I got hacked over IPV4 and ISP's aren't angels they use tracking 3rd party corporations for revenue on their customers account portals they're sometimes abused by corporations and authorities but where do people think news comes from about celebrity hacks? theres one of several answers. Using browser extensions such as script filtering and ad blocking: surf facebook and others long enough they have scripts to inject that screw 'em up. Facebooks partners can get dirty and will script you a comma into your peerblock app's blocklist as well effectively voiding your blocklists ability to filter anything even when read only access. Peerblock has a backdoor too sends statistics and leaves a closed port on your firewall effectively making your stealth status ruined. Ever since XP Microsoft's share holders have been served revenue from its app store and yuou get video ads over your ad funded apps now. Through these ad serving corporations hackers are found and even rogue government employed hackers but china's hackers are ugly as hell just block china if your not Chinese. same as Russians. They use methods such as tricking kernels with simulated hardware errors to pry into the system security layers. Such crap causes hardware failures sometimes fatal and expensive. Don't go thinking meltdown and Spectre are anything new age. Older less depth style hacks have been emerging from government agencies since Cavalari core was invented only governments can craft that level of hack intelligence.

  16. This is easily one of the best forum posts I have read in a long time, can I just say that now. WannaCrypt didn't even run on XP, remember: but all the ISPs and other tech sites just used it as an excuse to spread FUD about NT 5.x and 6.0 to scare people into upgrade to Windows 10. Also the whole thing of Microsoft trying to kill CPUs by lagging out Windows Update on Vista the day Win10 released (due to the free upgrade being exempt for Vista THANKFULLY, so let's try to make less smart users throw their devices away!)

  17. Vista and Windows 2000 are the last two major revisions to the Windows NT kernel (NT 10.0 doesn't count since it was hastily bumped from 6.4 at the last minute and 1507 doesn't really add much from 8.1 win32-wise). Lots of major functionality that we take for granted, like USB mass storage support (2000), desktop composition (Vista) and proper NT DirectX support (2000) was introduced in those two OSes, with their minor kernel revisions adding relatively minor things or ones that were of poor quality, like XP's firewall and WLAN client; the former didn't support blocking outgoing connections and the latter doesn't support connecting to WPA2-EAP networks (or maybe it does but I couldn't manage it with the built-in client; had to use Boingo client that also works on Windows 2000). Vista fixed them both.
