  1. Not yet, but I've just installed Vista on my i5-7200U laptop and I'm working on getting my Intel HD Graphics 620 drivers working. That work should also benefit those using other GPUs. Also keep an eye on the NTOSKRNL extender project as that seems to have added many functions and also compiles for Vista x64.

  2. Vista SP2's WMF patented decoders (h264/aac), which are installed via the Platform Update Supplement (PUS, KB2117917), have filenames (H.264 decoder is in mfh264dec.dll, the AAC decoder is in mfheaacdec.dll) different to the respective patented decoders already present in Win7 OEM; starting from Firefox 53.0a1, the Mozilla devs have completely removed any support for Vista's WMF decoders, so while e.g. Firefox Quantum 68 may launch under Vista SP2 64-bit with this Extended Kernel (which simply satisfies kernel functions missing in vanilla Vista SP2), it is not instructed in code to search for mfh264dec.dll / mfheaacdec.dll; it does try to locate decoders present in Win7+ (since it properly targets those OSes), but, of course, fails... The only way to tackle this serious shortcoming is if you recompile from source, having first reverted those changesets responsible for disabling Vista's WMF decoders... Related Bugzilla bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1324183 (and my relevant comment https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1324183#c15 which, needless to say, caused a stir with those damn developers...)

  3. Yes, TryAcquireSRWLockExclusive is present in the x64 kernel and will be in the x86 one. Thanks for explaining the decoder issue in detail as well; that part of Media Foundation was one I hadn't picked up on, especially with regards to the changes between Vista and 7. I could see the creation of a basic installer/script that dispatches a *.local folder with my files to a selected program folder with the program name indicated by the user. This could also check for the DLL redirection reg key; if not present, it could offer to apply it then prompt a reboot. But it would be difficult to have a solution for the replacement of system files as it would compete with the ESU updates that are still offered on a monthly basis and thus the files in those updates would continuously replace mine.

  5. W2k3_SETUPLDR_SP2_to_SP1.xdelta3Most of us don't really need/use the WAIK to build our custom WinPE's. So there were always a problem to get the few tools like wimgapi, imagex or the WIM filter drivers. Attempts were made to use httpdisk to download files from inside the WAIK iso, but it was not a good solution as you still need to load hundreds of MB and it requires to install an unsigned driver. You even had to set your x64 Windows in testmode ... But now we came with a good solution: Our tool uses cURL winhttp functions provided by Homes32 to download only the needed bytes for the hugh WAIK ISO's. There is no need for admin rights and you only need to download 4-6 MB per choosen WAIK. For command line: GetWaikTools -? W2k3_SETUPLDR_SP2_to_SP1.xdelta3 GetWaikTools.zip

  7. Chromium's certificate errors can be fixed aswell as addons with rootsupd. I don't know if i could distribute it here so i'll keep it to dms. Here's a theme installed on Chromium 72: This was not my find though, it was thanks to an user in discord.

  9. The last WidevineCDM version that was Vista SP2 compatible was 4_10_1196_0 ; that version was deprecated by Widevine licence servers last August 2019; newer versions, like the currently sanctioned 4_10_1440_18, 4_10_1582_1, 4_10_1582_2 & 4_10_1610_0, have been compiled and optimised by Google (the owners of WV) to target Win7+ Up until Aug 13th 2019, I was able to use the Spotify Web Player in 360 Extreme Explorer v12, until v4_10_1196_0 could no longer acquire decryption licences... The newer Widevine DLLs have a missing function in my Vista SP2 32-bit: If the Extended Kernel satisfies that missing function, then web services requiring the WV CDM should be usable in a Chrome-type browser, which comes with bundled patented decoders; Firefox, for the reasons I outlined earlier, won't be a choice... FWIW, all this ExtdKernel talk here is wayyyy beyond my level of expertise and, since I'm on 32-bit Home Premium install, will remain for me just a reading topic of high interest... (hopefully, in the not so distant future, a pre-compiled "installer"/"package" will be made available for simple Vista lovers, although I understand the redistribution limitations that'll come with such an endeavour...) Best wishes!

  10. Chrome works better than firefox actually. twitch works for example and h264 is supported. https://pasteboard.co/JixKoef.jpg

  11. Finally got around to trying this today (Firefox Quantum), and I must say this is simply amazing. I'm still in awe that this project even exists, after wishing for it for years. Thank you @win32 for all the work you're putting in. I will definitely have to make a video on this project soon.

  12. I cannot confirm, IE9 update worked on my x86 installation. Since no one posted the June and July update list yet, here we go:

  13. Weird, because to me the the boxiness of Win10 mixed with the removal of aeroglass makes it look like a bit like Windows 95/ME.

  14. That's because their highly correlated topics. The only reason aeroglass breaks is because Microsoft keeps tweaking the graphical interface with their big updates. Obviously there's merit to that making us think windows 10 sucks. I still have no idea why MS removed Aero from Win10. You could run Aero no problems on technology from 10 years ago. Today's tech should have so much redundant power it should be a non issue.

  15. I don't mean to grave-dig, but I've noticed this topic on MSFN tends to come up first in a google search. After over a decade, I finally found a Windows 98/ME compatible driver. https://retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com/2019/06/intel-945gm-display-driver-for-windows.html To install this driver: 1) You must install LoneCrusader's unofficial Windows 9x chipset drivers. Be sure to apply to EVERY applicable missing driver (every hard drive shown). Failing to do so will result in this driver not working!! 2) Install DirectX 9. This is REQUIRED as shown in Windows 2000 or later. 3) Go to device manager and manually install INF file from Windows 2000 folder. This driver does not install through the installer because of an artificial OS block! 4) Restart your computer and enjoy!! This driver was tested on a Thinkpad R60! Sadly, I have yet to find a working SoundMax HD Integrated Audio driver for Windows 9x...same goes with the wireless card!
