It is actually irrelevant whether the installation comes from VirtualBox; it could just as well come from any other PC (e.g. a hardware change without reinstalling). This issue with a full SYSTEM registry can also be caused by a simple Motherboard + CPU + GPU change. What is to be solved: why is a ridiculous size of 8 MB for SYSTEM the limit? I seemingly identified the cause and workaround. My XP installation originates from a VirtualBox installation, where I patched it with POSReady updates, preinstalled all C++ and .NET libraries, etc., and since then I have deployed it to any PC on which I want it installed. Windows XP stores the hardware configuration under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum and its underlying folders, and clones the configuration to HKLM\System\ControlSet00x as well (1 failed, 2 last known good, and 3 currently used - the assignment might differ, check HKLM\System\Select). Any device it has ever identified is saved in this registry section, blowing it up with useless data. The complete hardware change - by deploying the VirtualBox image on a real and completely different PC - litters it with an usual amount of useless data. I now went through all ENUM subfolders and deleted all entries that are unrelated to the hardware my installation is currently running on. Voila, the error is gone. And the SYSTEM file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG shrank from 8192 kB (which is exactly 8 MB) to 5632 KB. I hope this helps other people in the future who run into this problem.

Please stop telling people that XP-included apps like Outlook Express and MSN Messenger are the reason for a registry error. XP was designed for a minimum of 64 MB of RAM when it came out. I'll allow that to be increased to 256 MB by the time of the SP3 release, but telling me that 2 GB of RAM run full and cause registry errors because I run Outlook Express is blatant nonsense. I recently installed Vista SP2 and patched it up to the EOL state using WSUS Offline. From there, I patched it to receive SHA2 Windows Server 2008 updates. However, the system is 32-bit, and Windows Update tends to excessively use memory and CPU when searching for updates. Ultimately, I encounter error 0x8007000E ("out of memory") when svchost.exe (Windows Update service) reaches around 2.5GB of memory consumption. WUMT and a WSUS Proxy is of no help. Has anyone found a solution for this? I know there was a hotfix for Windows 7 (KB3050265), but I couldn't find any for Vista/2008. In the meantime, I built a script that installs all MSUs in the same folder one after another, restarting the Windows Update service in between to prevent the endless "searching for updates" bug. However, I'm sure I've missed many MSUs and possibly installed superseded updates as well. Hi guys, does anybody know how to decrypt old Compaq SmartStart installation files? Compaq used to encrypt several important files and implemented custom installers which asked for a Program License Diskette and an "Activation Key" on their COA which was bound to the SERIAL.TXT and corresponding LOK/DAT file on this Diskette, e.g. their OEM NT 3.1 disk. These disks also included drivers and OEM software which was and is relevant if you have such an old PC/Server. Long story short, the COA is long gone, I have the disk but no key. Is there another way to decrypt the files?
