My Browser Builds (Part 4)

Recommended Posts

I can't access HTTP version of archive.org with vanilla Pale Moon 32.4.1, redirects to HTTPS, zero errors in console. Has A LOT of JavaScript files. Default security settings, so CSP enabled, TLS settings intact...native user agent, I only spoof Firefox on few problematic sites. Too bad the web site can't be used to view archived web sites in old web browsers.

I don't remember encountering a website that worked after disabling CSP, if there were CSP errors and site was broken, it was still broken after disabling CSP.

Yeah, same case here, but on Serpent 52 and Serpent 55 (and K-Meleon as well).

Hi Roytam1,

I have an windows2000 machine that only has a p233mmx cpu. I have not been able to find any email clients to use on it. even with the extended kernel.

Can you please compile MailNews without SSE. I understand it will be slow, that is ok.

The website web.archive.org can of course be used to view archived websites in old web browsers. It works, for example, in New Moon 28 or Serpent 52. It's more a question of defining what an old web browser is.
The ability to temporarily disable CSP in UXP browsers is great. I need this frequently. E.g. to load certain web pages in iframes:thumbup

I'd call Opera 12 an old browser with some merits, such as integrated functionality without dependencies on plugins, and good performance on old computers with sites that don't have a lot of JavaScript (quite likely amongst archival content). To browse a site from the Archive in Opera 12, I need to copy its URL from another browser. I can't see the timeline of available snapshots above the webpage to select from. It used to be available in the past.

Verta, does your e-mail service require the latest security protocols to access? If not, there are other more light-weight mail clients. For example, my e-mail server offers an alternate "insecure" access deep in the help topics, and I am able to use Opera. Maybe an old Pegasus Mail or The Bat.

even if I compile MailNews without SSE, it will not run on a P-MMX since it lacks CMOV instructions support.

but it can run on a Cyrix 6x86MX.

OK, the whiteness at archive.org happens randomly on my end as well. The first time it did, there was nothing in the console, the 2nd time I didn't check.

I'd like to see this:

Made way back in 2011, that was before even "let" was a thing in JavaScript, it must have played smoothly in browsers that ran on XP then. Well, they all did back then. But no updated browser that runs on Windows XP today plays it smoothly AFAIK. I haven't checked when Mozilla broke WebGL performance on XP, but one of the last Chromium builds where it worked out-of-the-box had major version 39, the final build couldn't use the GPU for WebGL anymore (on XP). The last working version however:

It would work outside of Wayback Machine's wrapper.

All archived websites, I wanted to access via web.archive.org were properly displayed in New Moon 28 for the last years. Some weeks ago, when I had to access such websites on web.archive.org, there were definitely no problems I could have noticed. smilie_denk_24.gif But I'll test your link when I am at my desktop computer again. At the moment, I am surfing on my Android tablet.

I tested your linked website in the latest release of New Moon 28 (2023-10-06). I couldn't observe any serious problems except the initially cumbersome loading I already mentioned. smilie_denk_24.gif Here is a screenshot as a proof:

I've used a Cyrix 6x86MX, it is a nice CPU.

Sadly, I cannot replace the CPU, its soldered onboard.

Thank You.

Sadly another crash - Serpent 52.9 - mozjs.dll, I have halved and 256-colored the pic to make it smaller. Either Serpent 52.9 doesn't like the craptor lake refresh news or videocardz.com in general. :)

By the way - it's reproducible. I can go to craptor lake refresh news time and again and it shall crash after loading the site, it crashes just before it shows Disqus system comments that site uses.

Any video on vk.com causes the browser to crash.

If you disable these variables, the video works fine.
dom.streams.enabled > false
javascript.options.streams > false

 dom.streams.enabled > false
 javascript.options.streams > false

The same problem here with NM28 and St52 (latest versions 2023-10-06) when
trying to play this video:

https://www.anti-spiegel.ru/2023/anti-spiegel-tv-12-ueber-die-ukraine-connections-des-biden-clans/

Following Mehmed's advice now the video is ok with NM28 and St52.

 dom.streams.enabled > false
 javascript.options.streams > false

But for proper sound you also must disable in NM28:

media.mediasource.mp4.enabled > false

Strange enough, those shenanigans were not necessary to play the video
with NM28 and St52 versions 2023-09-30.
Only for NM28 (2023-09-30) you also had to:
media.mediasource.mp4.enabled > false

Heavens above, why must it be so damn complicted ??

TypeError: The ReadableStream reader was released.

It's related to the newly implemented Fetch Stream API by upstream:

https://repo.palemoon.org/MoonchildProductions/UXP/issues/1442

(details about the API itself:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Streams_API

)

Their code is still incomplete/bugged - those two prefs you mentioned simply turn that API off... FWIW, the same crash occurs on latest NM28 (32-bit) on the very same VK clips you referenced (later edit: @anton12 beat me on that ;) ) ... As a side-note, since you're well known to run St52 in e10s mode (completely unsupported by upstream), the fix on St52 itself (with multiprocess force-enabled) might involve additional codepaths, too ...
