  1. are you having problems just downloading files or is it opening sites altogether? try loading firefox on it, or maybe looking through the internet options. although, i havent seen this happen so im not very knowlegeable with this kind of problem.
  2. well, right now, i use remote desktop because i find it to be the best for what i need. but when i need to connect to a computer thats not running XP, i use pcAnywhere. that program is pretty good. iv got versions 8, 10 and 11. they all work good, but 11 by far is the best. i use 10 on an old laptop with win 98, and 11 on a few XP machines. i beleive the latest version is 11.5, but im not going to bother upgrading to it just yet, 10 and 11 work perfectly fine for me. theres a few other remote control programs such as these, but i find pcAnywhere and the built in one to XP the best.
  3. i use AVG. i love it, and its fast. i havent used NOD yet, so i might be checking it out pretty soon. if you want to see a vote of a bunch of different av programs, heres a good one: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=70783 if symantec is like mcaffe, then... well.. your kind up the creek, the best thing to do is use a different av program. it really depends on what it scans, if you disable different services, your losing the full functionality of the program, if thats the case then whats the point of installing it in the first place?
  4. i was using my old compaq armada 1700 laptop which has 98 on it last night and i gotta tell you, that little computer still performs very well for its age. i had an old mouse hooked up to (logitech track man marble) and i was browsing the net with it, i loved it. it ran so well (apart from the small screen, it was very useable) i was browsing the forums here on it for a good hour and a half sittin at my desk and just enjoying the oldness lol. i like using some older computers sometimes, reminds me of simpler times. well, i do like 98, and i do like xp, they both have their advantages. i like XP because it performs better and has better handlind of certain stuff, but if i wanna get some stuff done really fast, ill use 98. i use XP mainly now as most of my software now needs it, plus i like the look of XP over 98. but, i still have a lot of software written for 98, so i use that for my older stuff. i have a scanner that needs 98 too, so i use that on there. well, 98 will always hold a place in my house. as i need it, i run a webserver on it too.
  5. even if it doesnt allow you to use the glass effect, there is a registry hack that allows you to use it. iv seen it around, ill go look for it. edit, i think i found it you can find it here.
  6. if you made a system restore point before, try that. also, are you going into the taskbar settings by right clicking on the taskbar then going to properties?
  7. i think i have a few ideas. one, there could be a problem with your motherboard. it migh just be as simple as an incompatibility with another peice of hardware. two, there may be a problem with your cd-rom drive. try changing with another drive. three, i dont think its possbile given that you tried many different cds, but there could be a problem with your install media. i really doubt that one though. if you could give us the error that comes up on the blue screen, im sure theres 1 person that knows whats going on here. hope this helps.
  8. iv got a sony microvault 256mb. its the tiny little one with the silver shell. i used it mostly for school, and now that im on summer break, i use it to reload my computers. i have all my stuff i need to get a comp running on it.
  9. i dont use it. i know how to, but i dont need it therefore i dont use it. its a pretty decent peice of software, don't get me wrong, i just havent needed to use it since grade 8 computer class. we did small mathematical equations and stuff with it.
  10. all i can really say, is try to get into a trade. stuff with computers has very little job security. my father has been working at the same HVAC company for over 20 years now, he had worked in the trade for 4 previously. thats what im going into, you get very good job security and pretty decent pay, plus.. you get to workwith your brain and hands. i hate working on computers, i find em too fical, so i just play with em rather than going into something that requires me to be able to fix it. im better at fixing cars and other machinery. but, in order to get a good standing place in society early in life, you gotta work in the lower places , sweeping floors, pushing carts. etc... my great uncle started working as a janitor in a robinhood flour mill, he later became the manager of the mill. good things come to those who wait.
  11. iv got build 5834, its big, slow and doesn't recognize my hardware >_< if it did, then maybe id like it, but if you ask me, microsoft is focusing too much on visuals. doesnt mean its a bad os, just doesn't cater to everyones needs imo. other than that, it didnt lock up or anything when i was using it for a bit there.
  12. sounds like the new cooler isnt up for the job. try taking the side of the case and have a fan blowing from outside in, that might help you determine whats doing it.
  13. here in canada, you cant work at bestbuy unless youve had 2 years experience elsewhere and your 18 years old. i tried going there for a job this summer, they said no. so i applied at a garage, and didnt get that job either, never got called for it >.<
  14. first you would need to make the boot image from a dos 6.2 startup disk. so what i would do in your case, is get that boot image then load it on a floppy disc, then modify the cd-rom drivers to it will recognize your drive, then when you have it done, use nero to make a cd with the dos 6.2 setup files on it bootable with that image. if you need any help, im sure i could help with this as i have played around a lot with bootable disks.
  15. as long as you slipstream the cd with the sp2 pack and reinstall the os, it runs perfectly fine. im still no fan of updating an OS after an installation. i prefer to have all the updates on the cd (mainly just SP2 and xpize and stuff) an update that major changes a lot of files and stuff, so of coarse the computer will slow down after that. its better to reinstall the os with the updates imo. the reason i say this is, my dad has a laptop for work that originally came sp1, a guy at work who does all the computer stuff for the company. he installed SP2 on this laptop, and it just killed it. the thing now takes over 2 minutes to boot up. its a celeron 2ghz with 512mb of ram
  16. heheheh i hate norton antivirus. my dad got one from his company, that and a version of mcaffe. and i gotta tell you, it slowed down his amd 2200 it made it run bad, around 5 minutes too boot up (before it was about 45 seconds) i was amazed at that, then i told him about AVG not too long ago. he hadnt had any virus protection on his computer because he was angry at them all just because of norton and mcaffe. so when he installed avg, he hasnt removed it. its been on the computer for over 5 months now bye bye norton/mcaffe
  17. well, I'm 16, and I still love Christmas the best. News years is just a day for people to get hammered and crap and i don't like that. getting hammered isn't exactly a smart thing to do. If you like to do it, be responsible. So many people have been running around on our street and damaged stuff because of it. The thing I love most about Christmas, is the turkey dinner. Always tastes great. Plus all my family comes over. My grandparents don't get out much, mainly because of my grandfather (he has Alzheimer's) Well, my vote is obvious, Christmas it is
  18. i like a lot of logos, and this is one of em! it looks nice imo. always have been an ATi guy, but nVidia has made some dang powerful cards.
  19. if something like that pops up again and you dont want to install it, the best thing i can recommend is disable the add-on. i disabled flash player that way
  20. i use paint, its simple and it does what i need. i do a lot of simple graphics for my dads controls jobs. mainly, i draw floorplans. with photoshop, its hard to do that cuz the line tool works a lot differently. plus the layers is annoying for me >_< i want it all on one layer, PSP9 and Paint have their respective places.
  21. dells recalling a ton of laptop batteries because of a similar problem. O_o
  22. my laptop is using about 93 mb of ram. i have 384 total. not bad for a laptop eh? hehe
  23. wow cool! thank you!. just one question though, how can i use the avi files?
  24. thats exactly what it is, if you download a file from your own computer, of coarse its going to be fast
  25. dell (like many other companies) buys versions of windows with theyre own cd key, they keys cant be used on any other computer than a dell. your best bet, is to buy a copy of xp home from dell. i have 3 dell laptops, 2 with theyre own oem version of XP, 1 runs 98. i cant use these version of xp on any other computers, but on all the dells they run and install and activate.
