  1. did you try re-enabling the remember password thingy, or was it already enabled? if so, try disabling it then, then restarting IE then re-enable it. funny things like that can happen
  2. if your like me, you'll get irritated if you have to buy a new computer every 5 years just to have a supported platform. not everyone is made of money. i have a 1999 model dell inspiron running windows XP pro and another laptop of the same model running 2000 pro. both computers run good. why do i need to upgrade when microsoft decides to outdate XP and 2000 and then i cant get on the net because the browser needs at least vista. as far as we know, firefox may not longer be supported on XP or 2000 after a few years, just like theyre dropping 9X support. windows xp is reliable if the user doesnt do stupid things. they usually do that, then blame the manufacturer. nobody takes responsibility for thir own actions anymore. now, i dont want to start anything, so ill just say, its totally up to the user with what they want to do with theyre own computer. i use windows XP on an AMD athlon XP 1800+ with 640mb of ram and an ATi Radeon 9200 SE. its a decent computer and is in no hurry to be upgraded. windows vista ran pathetically on it. took 3 minutes to boot up, 20 seconds to load an explorer windows. control panel locked up (or else i got pi$$ed at it and closed it too soon because it was taking a long time to bring up all the icons). thats my experience with it, so thats why im mad at it.
  3. In other words, there's a limit to the number of processes that can be running.I would rather install 98se. either that, or nlite a copy of xp/2000 pro, im sure it would be the same as this Fundamentals thing. i think my copy of 2000 is better. it only uses 30mb of ram when it boots up, rarely goes up above 50 mb when i have a few programs running.
  4. i think its a limitation of the theming engine in windows XP. even the top of the button gets cut off, in vista, the little ball is perfectly round. in XP with the vista look, it gets cut off on the bottom and top. the best someone can do, is resize the image and put it back in then youll have the full ball in there, but it would be somewhat smaller. ill see what i can do with reshack and the vista theme. might be able to change it for ya
  5. are you using internet explorer? if so, i have an idea. start up IE, goto Tools ---> Internet Options ---> Content (tab at the top) ---> Auto Complete (button) then click both the clear Forms and Clear Passwords buttons. Also, make sure that Use auto complete for "user names and passwords on forms." is on. if that doesnt work, they may have changed something else in your registry. edit: i forgot to say, youll have to enter all the passwords again, and it should come up and ask you if you want to save them. click yes, and it should save them. also, you can double click in the part where you usually type the first letter and itll come up and ask you which password you want to enter.
  6. cost/status also, not too many people need that kind of performance from a computer, when you look at the average user market, what do they do? email and web surfing. some people play games and stuff, and if they want to spend the money and buy a bloated OS (thats just because of the gui) then they can go ahead. but for the average user, XP is more than enough. its user friendly, speedy, and best of, friggin reliable. theres more to life than computers, so why does MS consistently put out larger and larger os's? in my opinion, they can put out an OS that doesnt need a smokin' fast computer and still be reliable. look at nLite, with that program you can slim down an install to quite a bit, why does MS bundle all that stuff? in the off chance that someone might use it what they really should do, is make a home users edition that isnt 7gb to install. instead, they will release a home version thats a little under 7gb, when all of it can condensed into 900mb or less. /rant
  7. wow... wow... man how long did it take you to write that? good job! tons of info!
  8. maybe what you might consider doing is waiting until vista has been released and see what kind of hardware is available then? either that or just stick with xp like everyone else said. i really like xp and i think i will be using it until its no longer supported. its the only os i can use properly on my desktop right now, so im going to have to stick with it. 2000 pro works, but it doesnt handle my hardware as well and plus, i like the look of XP anyway. in the end, its really entirely up to you with what you do. just dont do something youll regret
  9. i head NDISWrapper is terrible. thats what a lot of linux people i know say anyway.
  10. usually fixingstuff yourself is better, then you have the satisfaction of being able to do it yourself. glad you got it working, have fun with the laptop
  11. i had XP loaded on my laptop in one partition. all 20gbs were dedicated to XP. i started the install for ubuntu and let it automatically resize my disc for me and now i have 2 OS's on my laptop. i ran into this part by pure accident
  12. i might just put XP back on this, but ill give it till the end of the activation time, which is 14 days, although, i might just go 2 or 3 because im going back to school soon and id like to have my computer fixed back up by then.
  13. usually, if you dont have the original drive, you can still get the computer running. unless the manufacturer doesn't have the original drivers on their site. all you gotta do, is install XP by booting from it, then go from there. XP will load as much as it can as its driver database is huge. all the hardware in my laptop loads, except my wireless nic, and my desktop is the same (not after nLite though, everything loads up now )
  14. >_< figures lol i dont have a lan setup in my house, just wireless. the router is in the next room and the longest cable i have is a 15 foot. ill see what i can do, thanks for the reply though.
  15. i have a dlink dwl 520+ wireless B card. i have windows vista beta 2 build 5384. i have tried to install the card using the windows XP, 2000 drivers, and still nothing works. i cant get this card to load up right, it says it sees the networks, but it just will not connect to them. i have read on the HCL for vista that this card does that, but i havent been able to find anything about it working on vista. if any one maybe knows how to get around this problem, id be so greatful. below is the message i keep getting when trying to connect to a network: thank you for reading this, cygnus
  16. np i hope it doesnt cost much either. i couldn't get my 9 year old laptop fixed, hp just said "buy a new computer" then that was it. i was irritated yes, but it was my fault so i couldn't do much.
  17. theres a very good chance it might be dead. too bad your warrenty is out or else id say, send it back. see if they can take a look at it for a cheep price at least.
  18. did it stop working when you plugged in the mouse? if so, you may have fried something on the motherboard like i did. except mine killed the laptop.
  19. what do you mean the port is broken? is it physically damaged? if so, that might be the problem. it might be shorting out and the mobo might be preventing it from starting up to prevent damage. i blew up a laptop doing that
  20. that looks like pretty decent software, im going to give it a try.
  21. for the most part, your both right. there isnt any need for the fancy effects. i like XP's default theme and i like the classic look from 98. i sometimes like the new look, but meh, i gotta be in the mood to look at that stuff. ill keep my windows xp and under look thank you very much, microsoft
  22. lmao awsome lol nope
  23. hey ahmed! always great to have new members on board
  24. well, to change from drive to drive, just type " *: " where * is the drive letter. CD is changing directory. when you want to start setup, your going to need to make sure your drive is formatted FAT32 because its a 40gb drive and your putting ME on it. youll need to run fdisk and partition it that way and stuff. if you want, i can help you more in depth on MSN or AIM. just IM me if you need more in depth help because doing this will get to frustraiting posting back and forth, not to mention it will bog up the forum. hope i can help -cygnus

    battery device

unfortuneately, its not that simple. if you remove something with nLite from an XP install cd that you need, your up the creek. in most cases, youll have to find the driver/file you need on the net, or remake the cd without taking that file out.
