RainyShadow replied to winnt5's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
So, it is something similar to 98SE2ME? -
360 Extreme Explorer Modified Version
RainyShadow replied to Humming Owl's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Maybe make the initial post with placeholder single-line spoilers, then paste the multi-line content when editing? now it won't let me copy your last post... definitely harder than it should be, ugh...- 2,340 replies

I use the normal spoiler tags - [ spoiler] before the text, and [ /spoiler] after (remove the space). But, for some reason i don't understand yet, the damn forum seems to ignore my closing tag and put everything after in the hidden block too... [edit] After posting you can edit your post and move the blocks around, but the contents aren't always editable. It seems that spoilers close properly when the opening and closing tags are on a single line. Move the closing tag to the next line and you get everything afterwards crammed inside too (test3 was supposed to be outside) Hopefully someone can explain how to properly do multi-line spoilers.- 2,340 replies

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
RainyShadow replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Right-clink on the playing video, select "Stats for nerds" (or whatever it is called now), and compare between FF and Chrome. Maybe one browser uses H.264 while the other uses VP8/9? -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)
RainyShadow replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Thanks for the detailed answer, @mixit I already have VS 2019 and DirectX SDK installed, part of the reason i'm left with less than 40GB space on the C: drive, lol. Hopefully using another drive won't mess things if/when i try building something bigger (like a browser) sometime in the far future. Still no clue what i'm doing in that damn IDE, especially when a project won't build as is, but needs some fixing first. A simple "make config / make install" or the Arduino IDE come a lot more easier. P.S. there is HttpDisk, which allows mounting iso and disk images over the internet, no need to download several GBs to extract only a few files. -
NoScript page load/rendering

@ArcticFoxie You can use a little trick to make noticing these things easier: P.S. why does the damn forum always move whatever i wrote AFTER a spoiler into the spoiler itself, ugh?! -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)
RainyShadow replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
@mixit, @roytam1 Just out of curiosity, roughly how much disk space is needed to compile a browser currently (Serpent52/NM27/NM28/Centaury) - source + dependencies + intermediate files created when building ? Don't count the compilers/IDE/etc. -

Just tried adding that to St52 and lost a session of 150 tabs, ugh. Fortunately, i was able to snatch a backup before it got cleared... -
Atlantis Word Processor is currently being offered pre-registered here for the next 15 hours. Just use a disposable mailbox to get the download link :P

@Drugwash As @Dave-H and @Goodmaneuver said^^^ Speak up! You're not allowed to just drop the bomb and then go silent about it! P.S. also, this whole topic is off-topic, so no excuses

I managed to configure a console "hello world" program so it works in XP (and no stupid SSE2, yay!). I didn't find simple GUI program to test though, and the example when i started a new "Dialog project" was way over my head. I have been trying to get Miranda-ng, but it seems to have issues even without targeting XP. And not having touched any Visual Studio before kinda complicates things for me... @user57 Could you share that MessageboxA project? I'd like to try getting it built for XP.
-
Have you found how to fix this? I recently got VS 2019 and wanted to compile a few programs without SSE2, but so far haven't been able to build anything successfully. Not even sure if i set up the damn thing properly. Tried to follow some "Hello world" tutorial, but it shows selecting console project and i don't have this option here, pfff. I remember getting that update too.

LOL On a similar vibe, look up the Progressbar95 game

I just found a Wikia site with lists of recommended games for MS-DOS, Win98, and many more platforms - /v/'s Recommended Games Wiki. It has short descriptions, and often includes links to modernized GOG/Steam/etc. versions, Hi-Res packs, and engine ports/remakes.

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
RainyShadow replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Yes, it loads now, thanks! I wrote to them as soon as we found it's IP related. No reply yet. It would have been a real crisis to switch away from the mailbox i use for over 20 years to some stupid upgrade... NM27 still won't load the message composer, though. No clue since when. There is this black frame without (visible) source address in the DOM. The code looks the same in St52, but it somehow works there... Anyways, it's fine (for now). -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)

@VistaLover I just noticed something along these lines too. I tried accessing the page through Edge on that Win10 system - one would expect it to support the newest websites. To my surprise it failed too. Then i enabled mobile data and the hotspot on my phone, connected the Win10 to it and reloaded the page - all loaded fine Regional website working on one national ISP and failing on another - WTF?! Still, i prefer this cause instead of the fail being caused by a website upgrade. Thank you both @VistaLover and @XPerceniol for the help! -

Unfortunately none of these would run on my system - all crash at startup (SSE2 related most likely)...- 2,340 replies

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
RainyShadow replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
As i expected... They replied with generic instructions about how to clear the cache+cookies and enable Javascript in the fricken INTERNET EXPLODER 11 ! And to use the latest version of my prefered browsers! I had included a screenshot of NM28 + Serpent52 with the homepage loaded and the about boxes of both browsers on top, where the build date is clearly visible... Best part - i actually tested with IE11 and it too failed to load the page... I also found out, that composing a new message don't work in NM27 - the message body field stays blank. But at least it worked in Serpent52. [edit1] @XPerceniol Thanks! Time for me to test a clean profile, i guess... [edit2] Nope, it didn't work. And now i remember testing earlier on the first start of Serpent52 on another system running Win10 - same result. @XPerceniol, which build of Serpent52 do you use there? -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)
RainyShadow replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
This morning i woke up to a nasty surprise. I usually check my web-based mail at www.abv.bg with my morning coffee. Then check the weather, news, etc. on that page. This is my primary source for local news. Starting today all info-blocks on the page stay gray and never load. I tested NM27/28, Serpent52, Firefox48, K-Meleon, Chrome34... None of the browsers i can run here manage to load that page properly! I also tried (on another system) the Firefox ESR 78 from this archive - it had the same issue. Curiously, at work it loaded fine in Waterfox Classic - i thought they were using older engine?! I already reported this through the feedback form of the site, but i don't hold my breath. Is there anything i could do locally to make it load fully? At least in Serpent52 (this seems to be the most advanced engine i can run)? P.S. To clarify - i can login and access my mail (for now). The issue is with the news on the main page. -
Lately i am using Easy2Boot to kickstart XP installs. Another option is to use WinNTSetup to prepare the install from WinPE or any other Win OS you have running. If you have issues due to ACPI, SATA, etc., look up XP Integral Edition for easy patches and drivers.

Unable to open MS-DOS command prompt window with GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
RainyShadow replied to halohalo's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Try Alt-Enter to check if full screen works. Or modify the shortcut properties. Also, try to set a hotkey which changes the desktop resolution to another supported one. This way you can blind-type "exit" in the command prompt, then use the hotkey to recover your desktop without restarting. -
[Request]XP Intel hd audio driver for virtualbox
RainyShadow replied to wyf180's topic in Windows XP
After reading this, i tried it myself and sure enough none of the few drivers i tested managed to work. Then i installed Win7x86 for comparison, and even there the various branded drivers refused to play nice. The only working driver was the generic HD Audio driver, which i had to select manually. Maybe you can try porting that driver from Win7 to XP using this: It is HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7680&SUBSYS_83847680&REV_1034 , but i believe that's fake. They just took some random existing ID and slapped it in VBox. The moderators over at the VBox forums talk about HD busses, codecs, and whatnot, but fail to explain properly why a (supposedly) properly emulated device won't work. And to put an end, they just say "we don't want to waste time on that old OS, use AC97". -
Perhaps some patch to run Win11 on "unsupported" hardware will surface (if it isn't already). It should be easier than trying to run XP on the latest hardware. Or, install some Linux hypervisor (Xen?) and run both Windows versions virtualised, lol.
