Then get used to using the recovery console if you want to fix your problem. You could try taskkill from the command prompt, but seeing as this is a rootkit-type of virus, I doubt that will have any effect; hence, the recovery console.

None. All of them are just substitutes for using your brain and being cautious.

I've always wondered how a normal user ends up legally using such an expensive OS when XP is cheaper and more than capable of being your main OS. Because they can?Same thing in the auto industry... just think of why people by expensive cars instead of cheap ones.

My current methodology for malware prevention
LLXX replied to jftuga's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
See http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=85094And crahak, you seem to have completely missed the point. I use *both* Proxomitron and a HOSTS file for blocking purposes. It's just faster to have HOSTS block the connection from ever occurring in the first place than to have Proxomitron handle all HTTP traffic. I like that, it shows that the blocking is working -
The cable connecting the machine I'm using right now to the router is spliced in several places like that and yet it's working fine at the full 100Mbps... maybe I just did a better job of it or it's just not near any sources of interference UTP means unshielded-twisted-pair

Floppy Disks on a Compact Disc Why not just copy all the files from the floppies to the CD instead?

At this link is clearly written: I'd not believe in this tool for bigger disks and in general - are you sure that it is 100% compatible with MS-DOS 7.1 and 8.0 and Windows 95/SE/Me?. And do you know it's license? Is it illegal to redistribute it too, I've written to the author and not received the permission to add it to the SESP.They haven't bothered to update the main page, but just download it and read through the source... it uses 32-bit calculations internally and supports Int13x, i.e. disks up to 2048Gb should be fine with this. I've used it on a 160Gb drive with no problem (this was an even earlier version of FFDISK I used, in the days before I released Enable48BitLBA).The reason why the author has not replied about this is because it clearly states in the GNU GPL that you can redistribute it... Maybe you should submit your fixed versions to bootdisk.com...

Undelete Plus for Windows 98FE/98SE/ME

This piece of sh*t crashed my system. Three BSODs after pressing "scan" button. Then returned to desktop and completely froze No thanks, I'll keep my Recycle Bin. (I had a bad feeling about this after seeing its size and the fact they seem to be more concerned with how it looks than how it functions...) -
There are plenty of data recovery programs out there designed specifically for flash drives. Do some Googling.

Correction, a formula using conventional algebra exists for polynomials up to and including order 4 (quartic). It has been proved that no closed-form algebraic solution exists for polynomials of order 5 or higher.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubic_equation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartic_equation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintic_equation Here is Mathematica 4.1 attempting to solve your sextic equation. It cannot offer exact roots, as it does not have the capabilities to go beyond ordinary algebra. Below that is an approximation to each of the 6 roots (all complex numbers).http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4372/equusuj6.png (Yes, "equus" is Latin for "horse".)

No need to run another program just to block ads when all you need is a static file that *always* works, and is basically nearly infalliable... I just use Proxomitron to rewrite webpages further (e.g. remove all content coming from */ads/* or */banners/*). Both together are more effective. Thinking too narrow there. I really don't care what it was designed for, only what it can be used for.As for disabling DNS Client I just use the 4.2.2.* DNS servers, those seem to have a better response time than the ones of my ISP. Also, no cache = less RAM usage. -
Definitely NOT Exhibit C!!!! Also, in Exhibit B make sure the contacts are not loose. Exhibit C will work fine, just use wire nuts and electrical tape.

http://www.asus.com.tw/products2.aspx?l1=3&l2=-1 Hmm... I don't see a "P4P800-UAY" there... and I was about to say "consult the manual for more information on supported RAM types"

"Do what you can, with what you have..."

...and a lot of the stuff in this forum here violates the EULA, but M$ doesn't seem to care...However in this case I do recommend Free FDISK since it has some better features.

Drive letters shifted when I add a 2nd HD w/1 logical partition. Why?
LLXX replied to E-66's topic in Windows 9x/ME
If you partitioned the disk first does that mean you installed XP on a FAT 32 partition? I'm certainly no expert but from what I've read it seems that NTFS is wholeheartedly recommended for XP. Or are there partition utilities out there that can create NTFS partitions? Good luck recovering your data from DOS with a disk editor when your NTFS partition messes up... -
If the less popular downloads will be staying at the sysinternals site, and just the more popular ones moved over to M$'s servers, then there really isn't any concern is there?Otherwise, there might be some slight concerns, but from a simple Google search I did of the filenames, it appears the Internet has already mirrored quite well most of them. For example, do 'filemon.zip + "Index of"' and see how many results there are. That was just for one (admittedly large) search engine, and only for http sites. There's still ftp, usenet, p2p, etc. so I really don't see any concerns over availability.

Well it did feel like a bootable OS to you, so I guess their strategy was successful for you, but we weren't so easily fooled

Which version of XP Professional CD is it? RTM, SP1, SP2?

Run MemTest86+ on your machine for a few hours to test the RAM. You might not have run it long enough the first tiem. Decompression errors usually occur because of hardware faults.

My current methodology for malware prevention

i used to rely on HOSTS religiously, but it does really slow things down. maybe with any luck they have a more efficient implementation in Vista. Disable the DNS Client service. Contrary to common sense, DNS names still get resolved properly, and the HOSTS file still works fine Just try it on your system if you don't believe me. What the service does is attempt to cache the whole HOSTS file, which is the source of the performance issue. -
It depends on the virus. Some will only infect files in the current drive (or even just the current directory) but others will scan other drives and infect the files there too. If you want to hide a partition, save a copy of the partition table on some other media (or better yet, just write down the entries on paper) and zero that entry in the partition table. Now it'll be *very* well hidden, just don't forget about it and try to repartition the "unused space"

I remember the infamous Sony rootkit would do the same thing to the drives when it was removed - it left an inoperative filter in the chain
