  2. I agree with you there. The background should be just that; a background that isn't too obnoxious so that you can easily focus on the important stuff in front of that background. Mine is similar to yours, only I used orange and black. But they blend together to form a rough cloud-like pattern that doesn't distract the eye.
  3. Steve Gibson certainly has a reputation as a troll and self-promoter...but that really doesn't apply here. Much of his advice is sound and he does have a job writing for the industry. That makes him citable. Let's NOT start a Steve Gibson argument.
  4. Glad to hear that you and your friends are alright.
  5. There isn't much detail in those screenies. Please provide more info.
  6. I've seen Ashampoo products included "for free" on the CDs that tend to accompany trade magazines. Never seen it used in real life, though.
  7. So can this be used at all without invoking the GUI?

    Partitions

Not as long as there is enough room for the OS to "grow" and sufficient swap file space, but that can be on another partition.
  11. Rats! Oh well. I seem to remember a HFCLEANUP vs FDV comparison that showed HFCLEANUP coming fairly close to "FDV levels." Can't find the link, though... EDIT: Ahhh, here it is: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...mp;#entry491448 But I know that TommyP has put in a lot more work since he posted those numbers so they may be even better.
  12. @pS-: Nice work. Your entries always impress me! /jealous
  13. Pimpin' stuff. How much of a toll on your machine's performance is all that eyecandy?
  14. Setup a GPO at User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop > Active Desktop > Wallpaper Active Desktop needs to be ON and you should use a bitmap to save yourself some potential headaches.
  15. Yeah, that tactic is similar to the digital camera industry's "digital zoom" which is actually a software zoom (crop) and not a lens capability. Most consumers don't understand that fact thanks to clever marketing. I have a D-Link DCS-5300G and it works well for me.
  16. If you do as LLXX says, make sure that new host machine is running a current AV! Try logging in as a different user as login issues like that are sometimes a problem with your profile. You could also try booting into safe mode, running AV again, and rooting around for the login issue.
  17. What is the error message? What version of Excel/Office is being used? Not likely an OS-specific issue, moving this to the Excel forum.
  18. @LLXX: Good call! I wanted to post earlier and say that it looked like a game, but couldn't figure out what game it was. Looks like you are right on the money.
  19. I've seen this problem go away after rebooting.
  20. Chalk up another vote to toss out the physics acceleration. The problem there is that you probably bought a card like that to enhance whatever your favorite game is. And the cards aren't cheap, so you will probably have a desire to want keep it in there and use your mobo sound. I recommend taking that physics acceleration card back to the store for a refund while you still can.

    downgrading?

Microsoft does not facilitate downgrade paths. They don't generally make it easy. You need to backup the important data and install a fresh copy of the OS you want.
  23. Do you intend to also release a fileset for IE removal from 2k3?
  24. For streaming video like that you should look at VLC and a nice, fast internet connection on both ends.
