  1. Tomcat76 nearly has me convinced to buy a new rig like his but in the process of debating several issues I found myself wishing there were a faq/guide about optimal SMP configurations for Windows 2000 Pro. Perhaps this thread will serve that purpose if such a guide doesn't exist. As I understand it, there are several factors to consider as they specifically relate to Windows 2000: Win2K Pro supports two processors. Performance of two single core processors vs. one dual core processor. Win2K doesn't properly recognize dual core processors, but can fully utilize both cores depending on the CPU memory scheme:How does shared vs. separate on-die memory impact Win2K support of dual cores? AMD vs. Intel on-die memory implementations (shared vs. separate) in dual core chips. [*]Given limited hardware availability, is a four-core Windows 2000 Server (with four processors or two dual core processors) prudent at this time? Based on most of our research so far, it appears that AMD's FX, Opteron and X2 (preferably socket 939) are the only dual core processors that Win2K will recognize and fully utilize, with the X2 939 seeming to be the "sweet spot" of price vs. performance. Intel doesn't appear to be much of a player here since their dual core chips use shared memory which Win2K can use, but not for SMP. I am also interested in a "fast, but budget SMP" config versus an "all out, fastest Win2K SMP config ever because future hardware won't be properly recognized" config, if that point has been reached. Note: This thread has nothing to do with overclocking. Thanks to Tomcat76 for all his help with this!
  2. My first step in resolving standby/hibernation issues in Win2K is to remove all USB devices, reboot and try again.
  3. Not sure how much you have used it, but you can change some more of that behavior than you may think. Opera does support "extensions" but they are called userJS. Many greasemonkey extensions also work.
  4. It is so nice when we can all come together and agree on something
  5. I didn't find Wordpress to be robust enough to scale with our future requirements. We are pretty happy with Drupal for now. It lacks a little configurability that I would like, and I've had to make changes to the code that will make upgrades more difficult. But I think it should scale very well for us. Thanks for the input!
  6. I usually upgrade to the latest version of Opera a week or so after it is released. For me, it performs far better than other browsers. I wouldn't mind better userJS/FF extension/greasemonkey support, though!
  7. LOL! "For some reason"? It is quite configurable. Perhaps you should start a thread in the software forum asking for options to configure it more to your liking?
  8. That is a much better review, in terms of quality, of the Th2Go than I had previously read. Thanks for the link. I have considered the Th2Go but am concerned about the high price of a screaming new card (I probably won't go SLI, right away) plus that $275+ box. But that box does open up the door for many more gaphics card options and upgradeability later. I would be more excited if it had DVI Hopefully someone on this board already has this box and can provide their thoughts on it.I'm not interested in four monitors, but thanks. Doesn't that option leave me with three different desktops? Or does nvidia have software that can make that configuration emulate a single desktop?
  9. I'm not sure if TC wants to implement a PDF mechanism. Perhaps you should use one of these tools in the meantime? You can install PDF as a printer and "print" (save as) a PDF of the page you are reading.
  10. LOL, awesome!@BassettHound: My beagle and I welcome you to MSFN
  11. It could be that your system is trying to populate the device list. ie, it wants to show you a list of your hard drives and optical drives. Maybe you have a CD/DVD in a drive that is taking a while to read?

  13. I currently use a 128MB Matrox Parhelia to drive my 3 LCD monitors. My resolution is a single desktop at 3840x1024 (1280x1024 for each screen). I'm looking to upgrade my system, so I'll need a PCI Express card to replace this AGP card. The only truly viable solution I can find is the Matrox Parhelia APVe, but I am reluctant to "upgrade" to this card as it doesn't seem much more capable than my current one but is quite pricey. If anyone has the APVe I'd love to hear what they think of it. So I need a new PCI Express card that has decent performance and can output to all three screens as a single desktop to eliminate the various problems that occur with running three separate desktops. Any suggestions?
  14. That image (http://www.msfn.org/board/style_images/msfnskin/rss.png) is loading fine for me. Possibly a browser problem on your end.
  15. Agreed. This thread has run its course. Each OS has an active fan base. Each fan base is welcome here at MSFN and has been provided their own forum. Let's keep it peaceful and productive, OK? [ closed ]
  16. Battlefied 2 (not 2142) looks very promising. That is one for us to try out! That one seems to still be limited to mainly soldier/squad combat. The site says that they have one usable vehicle now. Might have to keep an eye on this one. Thanks for the nom Maybe the territory system will be different or can be toggled on/off. Will read up on that one now, thanks!

  18. I'll look into that one. Don't know much about it yet. I thought that was an FPS with just soldiers and small arms? Will have to take a second look. Thanks, guys!
  19. I use the AutoGallery plugin for the e107 CMS. Most people don't. I think most people use some implementation of Coppermine. Lots more good ones here (after the sponsored ones). Your site looks great and I am jealous of your Whistler vacation

That seems like a decision that only nuhi can make. But he hasn't weighed in on this so far, so....
  22. Agreed. Great job!

  24. I just posted about my affinity for Empire Earth in another topic but then it occurred to me that there might be a better game out there for me somewhere. My friends and I like to play Empire Earth in the Modern epoch so that we can use current, real-world military equipment that is fairly realistic in employment. ie, we can launch F-14s off of a carrier, send A-10s out on tank strafing runs and use B-52s to drop nukes where the sun don't shine. There are many things about the game that could be better (F-117s aren't really air-to-air fighters, we'd LOVE to have a few different SAM and AAA systems to employ) but this is the best game we've found for our purposes. I keep mentioning aircraft and anti-aircraft systems but other units like tanks, artillery and troops are just as important. C&C Generals is OK but a bit more cartoony than we like. EE is pretty old now and it has kept us happy for a long time. But there is likely something newer and better available now. We have tried EE2, but some of its new features p***ed us off (mainly the territories). Can anyone recommend some other games that might be better at these things than Empire Earth? Bonus points for any game that includes the F-15E and/or GPS vs. Laser airborne weapon options!
