  1. karaq: please start a new topic to ask for help. This forum is just for introductions. Read the links in my sig for tips on posting your question. Don't forget to include as much info as possible about what you want to do. And welcome to you both!
  2. Are you wanting it to just be installed? Or to be installed and *active* meaning that you want it to actually replace the default shell? The former is more likely to happen. FYI, I've known some folks who tried to slipstream in alternative shells but had no luck. Windows just can't live without explorer.exe.
  3. You'll need an install-maker who is fluent in litestep for this. Litestep requires some special setup steps including getting the program updated to the latest core. There is a new installer being worked on that might help but I don't think it is ready yet.
  4. You owe me a keyboard
  5. How does that compare to WoW?

    How about a non-flash link?
  7. No news is good news.
  8. Works fine for me on Win2K. I just deleted my flopppy shortcut. Maybe your shortcuts in question are in the All Users profile instead?
  9. You can manually edit the contents of SendTo. They are just shortcuts found in C:\Documents and Settings\username\SendTo
  10. I personally think that it could just be the game. Game networking is finicky in my experience, especially in older games. Can you browse each other's network shares? How do you know that the ports are the problem that prevent you from playing the game with one another? Can you swap the router with a hub or dumb switch to rule out a bad router config? Depending on how this pans out, you may need to do a "hard reset" on your router or reload the default values.
  11. Have you used nLite on that system? You might have removed that functionality.
  12. When you run the program it downloads mssecure.cab and extracts mssecure.xml from the cab. If we can get older copies of that XML file then perhaps we can develop a workaround for this. So we need someone to save that file BEFORE they run the program now so that we get the valid data and format. My first thoughts on a workaround: have people manually download the new .xml or host one on a server and have people redirect to the right IP via their hosts file. Here is Shavlik's EOL post: http://forum.shavlik.com/viewtopic.php?t=4155 I'm not familiar with Shavlik's licensing so I have no idea how thick the ice is here... [edited to remove alert]
  13. I object!
  14. Never had the urge to do that before, but you can probably search for that string in the registry and change it or maybe go through some trials such as: shutdown, unplug the device, boot, shutdown, plug the device in, and boot back up. Older cards would let you change a jumper for that. These days you usually set it in the BIOS if you need to do so. But most people let the OS handle it. If you need to change it in the BIOS, you may have to change a master setting such as "Resource assignment: Auto" to manual before the options you want will appear. In Device Manager, change your view by clicking on "View" where you normally find File, Edit, etc.Why are you doing this stuff? I get the impression that these are cosmetic changes. Don't forget: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
  15. That is purely personal preference. To use the Windows 2003 firewall, go to Network Connections in the Control Panel and view the properties for the REMOTE (outbound) connection. There is a tab for firewall. Or use one of the firewalls from this thread.
  16. Did you remove anything from the OS using software like nLite? Does an Active Directory domain exist in the network? What permissions do you have on those machines? When were the machines last rebooted?
  17. Of all the stuff you tried, the only that worked was going to IPX? Really strange. Sounds like maybe this is an older game...
  18. Begs the question: what is its name?Happy Birthday, buddy!

  20. It shouldn't be. Your first post looked like you might have enabled some port forwarding. Turn that off for now. Do you have basic connectivity? Can you ping each other? Can you browse each other's network shares? How do you know that the ports are the problem that prevent you from playing the game with one another? Can you swap the router with a hub or dumb switch to rule out a bad router config? You didn't answer my first question about being on the same segment. Are we talking about two PCs behind a single router?
  21. This depends on your FTP client. What are you using? You can access the FTP server via IE by using the form ftp://user:password@ftpserver/path
  22. Both PCs are on the same network segment? Then the problem is more likely to be a software firewall on one or both PCs. The XP firewall, perhaps? Disable that to see if you can then connect.
  23. I like shoutcast/WinAMP. What am I missing here?
  24. People say that all the time but the speed hasn't varied much for me in my experience. I still get slow speed whether it is a small, private apartment or a large, noisy (in the electrical sense) building with *very* old wiring. It supposedly tops out at 14mbps anyway so the variance doesn't really matter much.
  25. Aren't graphics junkies better off with a PC anyway, as glock said? That way you can get the latest/greatest video hardware and the upgrade path is friendlier. I've always thought of consoles as being good for the nice controls, simpler interface and maybe some exclusive games. The Wii is obviously innovating on these counts, and a PC can/will do it all. So my counter-question to this topic is: why would you want a PS3 or x360 when you get better control with a Wii or better graphics with a PC? Perhaps the newer media center features they offer? Nope. PCs have that covered, too. The ultimate answer is probably: everyone prefers something different. But I haven't seen anything about the PS3 or x360 that made me personally want to buy one. I haven't looked too in-depth, though. Disclaimer: the last console I bought was my Sega Genesis. I still use it occasionally.
