http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network Ok, I kinda understand... Maybe a better question would be... what is the whole picture intent (e.g. what is the basic "equipment hookup", what are the basic "requirements", does it justify the need for VPN, etc?)... It might help in assisting with your setup with what tools you have available or can easily obtain. http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/overview.html https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi2/ Otherwise, ????

?VMWare, VirtualBox, QEMU? Adding these and any others? Any comments/testing/info on these for anyone else? May as well report all the info that can be found...

Not saying don't use NT4, just wondering... As for security, a good router might suffice (you did mention it was only for server purposes)...

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE
submix8c replied to galahs's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
re - Torrents - anyone think of Vuze (the successor of Azureus)? Supposed to work on Win98 and up... -
If it's for Win98, even an old one would do, unless there's a sacrifice/loss between new/old. BTW, have you considered transferring the Floppies to Images and using Floppy Virtualization? Heck, just get an External USB floppy... As long as there's no sacrifice or an improvement, the world is kind of wide open for Win98... No need to go spend-crazy unless it's a kind of Christmas/Quanza/Hanukka Gift (did I spell those right?). Try eBay too (but beware the bad seller). What method is being proposed for the "clone" operation? BTW, RAM/CPU/HDD is not really a limitation... browse the forums and you'll see why. edit - and may I point out that if the original PC is Win98, then chances are the USB ports are v1.1, not v2.0 - a bonus if you check the "newer refurbish" specs.

... and VPC2k4 will run just about anything (DOS thru 2k3, including Linux, I believe). Might even install on Win2k (not sure, haven't tried). Dunno about VPC2k7 (tried it once, then uninstalled). Again, create the VHD independently, then define the VMC and point to the created VHD, boot into the OS-Install of your choice, install, and add your drivers. Refer to the specs for correct drivers. Hardware - VPC2k4 - ACPI (AMI) - S3Trio 32/64 PCI (8mb), backwards compatible with MDA, CGA, EGA, and VGA - Yes, you can load the Host Monitor INF - Intel 82371AB/EB BMIDE Controller - Intel DEC21140 PCI FastEnet (add LoopBack adapter, install ICS, "hook" to "real NIC", define it) - Sound Blaster 16 redirected to Host - Share your Host Printer (w/NIC definition) to print to Host USB printer - Browse the Web (w/NIC definition) - Share Host folders (w/NIC definition) w/o Shared Folders feature (a Map Drive function) "natively" - COM1/2 Emulation redirected to Host ports - LPT1 redirected to host LPT port - No USB support (exception - Keyboard/Mouse via emulation) - Note1 - although 3D support is not there, OpenGL is - Note2 - although no Modem support, one may do the same "loopback" trick for Host Modem Bets are up same for VPC2k7. MS bought Connectix VPC5 (circa 2002) and improved it, ya see. If you look real hard, you can find specifics. You may as well include any/all Virtualization contributions and get this added as a General Sticky(?). It may help some poor souls in search of Free (and otherwise) software for their particular Host/Guest requirements. Attached is Hardware-related Everest HE report (w/installed VM Additions)... Note that it incorrectly shows the memory sticks and shows USB ports (must be a "future" or a "removed" item). (err, upload limit? it's a ZIP file.) VPC2k4_Report.zip

?A watermark embedded in the original that the scanner picks up? If so, then it must be an option in the scan software...

Google on them and look up the specs. Some use their own, including other hardware, and others use the Host hardware. Some optionally allow you to use either/or/both...

Uhm, NO! Not true! If you download VPC 2004 (I think it may still be available), it has an ISO within it (extract it out) that can be mounted in VPC2K7 and installed.BTW, I think you have to - 1 - set the VPC2K7 VM as an "other" machine, i.e. manually create the VHD first 2 - then define the VMC and point to it 3 - mount the Install ISO and run it (installs fine) 4 - using the extracted VPC2K4 "add-ons ISO" install the "accelerator/sharing" stuff Not swearing to this, but I think I already tried it. This guy has a wealth of information regarding MS VPC. Look here for some more specific info. Here is every version listed for download from MS (use VPC2K4SP1). VPC2K4 might not install on Vista/Win7/2K8 (probably not), but the tip mentioned should work with VPC2K7. Uhhh, not everything runs on non-Win9x systems and some folks (small mom/pop business) just can't afford to upgrade all of their software, besides the fact that the data may be in a special format only accessible in a Win9x+Apps PC. Conversion anyone?Oh, and if this topic is meant for "What Virtualization will run on Win 9x", VPC will not, but QEMU will (as awergh stated), but it looks like it's more for "as a guest"... HTH

Check this out. Specifically here. And looks like this version of BackupMyPC supports QIC format. Google is your friend!

By-the-by - you can get an evaluation version of Server 2008 R2 here good for 180-days. Just be prepared to reinstall every so often to keep using it for RIS installs (info/how-to available on MS Technet - Google it). Server 2000/2003/2008 is a requirement for RIS installs. edit - and you really should re-read the suggestions and act accordingly. It will simplify the installs/reinstalls. And don't forget to MSFN-Search/Browse and Google. BTW, did I not mention "been there done that"? Where do you think the suggestions came from (re- "Does no one in this forum do ")? No need to get frustrated, as we are trying to help. edit2 - and here's some more assistance on "rebuilding" OEM CD's (and re-read my previous posts) here and basically applies to Home as well...

Have you tried pulling a given customer's HDD, attaching it to another PC, and seraching for the I386 folder? It's usually there somewhere. There's information all over the web for differences between OEM and other variations so you SHOULD be able to reconstruct the appropriate install media. There's also a thread floating around here with instructions on recreating an OEM pre-activated install. You just need the associated information/files off of the PC's HDD in question. Just obsever the fates of the files to determine which SP-level was initially installed and match accordingly. Then you'll have your "collection". Been there, done that (once/twice). And... rather than nLite, you can use the built-in slipstream function, then WUD or AutoPatcher. Between these items, you should (eventually) be able to reinstall any customer's PC in a matter of hours. OR simply do a "repair over-the-top" reinstall (retaining the HDD contents, etc.). Done that before also. All against OEM installs.

... and in case you didn't know, here's the MS fixes (all of them) - ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winn...fixes/usa/nt40/ edit - err, not quite... but browse ennyhoo. edit2 - brain-fart - http://www.msfn.org/board/nt4-sp6a-gone-t130993.html (dang - wasted a post... oh, well, maybe useful to someone else as a "pseudo-bump")

Ram compatibility, CPU compatibility... check those against the MoBo (old/new) specs. There's usually some info in the Manual(s) as to the combos that will/will-not work. Sometimes "jumpers" to select the FSB which must match.

FWIW (kinda OT, but more directed at/to Zxian); My bro's website (he's a Minister, as is his wife) - http://www.prodigalministries.biz/ Notice the teeny-tiny banner at the bottom ("Yola"). They also provide a paid-for service of some kind. Fair warning, I haven't a clue how to create your own webpage and upload it; they apparently have been using some kind of "tool". Appears that they have to upload files to "elsewhere" and provide links to them, either directly or using "widgets". They chose "biz" since the "com" and "org" were already taken.

What to do with unused copy of XP Pro?
submix8c replied to Alpaca Portrait's topic in General Discussion
Agreed re: the CD's... my point (above) was to obtain a laptop at a reduced price, sans OS. I had "heard tales" that it was possible (CompUSA, etc.), just not how it was done (or where I had seen the "tales"). All I can say is, check with the outlet to see if it's agreeable with them. Dunno -
What to do with unused copy of XP Pro?

? I was once under the impression that you were not required to accept pre-installed OS (non-acceptance of the EULA'ed software) on a purchased PC, and depending on the source of said PC you may be able to get a reduced price under some sort of "special purchase agreement". I believe this was how pre-Linux offerings were instituted so that a purchaser could load Linux instead of MS-OS. Could be wrong... -
Use the XP ones. I have used both the XP and Server2k3 ones. Read the instructions carefully or it won't work. I have also "started" the "service" at Windows Startup. Can't remember exactly how I had it all set up (used the previous version).

FYI - BOOTFONT.BIN is part of what makes the CD non-EN as this file is present in any other non-EN version. Many other files will be specifically changed to support that particular language and most others are "universal" i.e. not language-specific (don't ask for further explanation - beyond my "ken"). My OEM and "full" EN are layed out the same...

Uh-uh... Clearing CMOS apparently doesn't work. See here - http://www.computing.net/answers/security/...word/14916.html May be something ON the HDD that the BIOS "sees", since the suggestion was to hook it to another computer then "clear" it. Try moving it to another PC and use the Disk Utility provided by the HDD manufacturer to reset the whole thing to "factory" (a FORMAT?) thus "clearing" it to "new". (googling on this...) edit - perhaps the Clear CMOS jumper MIGHT work... worth a try... (sigh... is this legal? annyhoo, see the link provided...) How do I recover HD space after virus removal?
submix8c replied to MarkJohnson's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
herbalist is correct - I use OE6 and the same applies. Suggest compressing folders individually though. A note on that - OE6 creates a "backup" in the Recycle Bin which has to be deleted so it might also apply in your case (T-bird). -
You might also be interested in this nifty tool (based on MS' techniques) - Virtual Floppy Drive - http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html If you can get an IMA (filename.IMA) then it can be mounted and manipulated just as if it were a real floppy drive with a real floppy disk. WinImage will create a couple for you (trial version will work fine). Just remember to create IMA's and not IMZ's (these are the compressed variations). HTH edit - another topic in which jaclaz refreshes my memory (indirectly) also refers to IMDISK http://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html#ImDisk This should also work nicely...

Urgg... !!!! 2KPro is what you want (didn't know you had that). Just "lean and mean" it out to just what you need for a server and it will perform just as well (better) than 98SE. All you need is the basic OS, the latest updates, and IIS (kinda "all u need", ennyhoo).
