  1. Starting a flame-fest when someone asks for help is not in the rules. Please stop it as it could warrant banning by a moderator. Help constructively or don't respond at all... (p.s. - and you list using Win2K???)
  2. RE - WordPerfect and printing... Use WordPerfect but not the print function. Get the free Word Viewer from MS and the free Converter package and install both. Open the Word Viewer, select the WordPerfect document and print it from there instead. And I would ( in reference to recording your own music ) see about getting some good PC recording software thay will allow for cut/paste/etc and use it to also construct a CD of multiple tracks. My brother and I use a simple 2-track recorder ( both of us are in bands ) , plug into the LineIn of the sound card, and ( using Nero ) edit as necessary ( including adding effects ), then burn. In addition, there are some free Tagging programs that will allow you to personalize each track (on the HDD) as per title, date, artist, etc. MediaPlayer ain't that hot to use for recording/burning your own music, which is why initially you were getting someone else's "name" tagged to your own (recognition/match websites as the MediaPlayer uses and may be erroneous). At least you came back to your own topic with an update. Lots of other folks never do. If you become satisfied with your "problem fixes", be so kind as to add "Solved" to the title of the topic.
  3. Ha, Ha, real helpful! Gentoo is Linux...(and sorry, I don't think there is one for WinME... look over in APACHE.ORG; it's a big maybe...) (edit - look here for possibilities - http://www.supershareware.com/freeware/ema...erver-free.html )
  4. Will this help? (the SLP method is the third one, which I was referring to. The second method is the one Ponch refers to. Having to activate is the first method no matter what.). http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/29/ Again, the method I refer to requires having the SLP key from your PC and the files indicated. And it still requires a/"the" key and a clean install. Find the SLP key from your PC (any good keyfinder will get it) and follow method three (my suggexted method). OR use method two (as Ponch suggests). Either one will allow for "no phoning home" (pre-activated). Bear in mind that the WPA.DBL trick is touchy since it requires replacing the one generated after installation (un-activated is initially generated). Trust me, method three works... again I did it for a friend (a legitimate OEM install) and then slipstreamed the SP3 to it via nLite and burned his backup CD. Worked like a charm. And AFAIK perfectly legal, since it was only using what was pre-existing on his PC. BTW, you will need the complete I386 folder and the associated files/'key'. Take your pick and search for further info. It's all 'here on MSFN" and 'out there'... HTH (Hope I'm right about the legality and sure someone will inform me otherwise.) (And I can say no more on this lest I get into too many details.) Oh, and Ponch may be right about the WPA.DBL trick as that identifier may change if re-partitioned. As I recollect, I reformatted only before the reinstall on friend's PC, so it may have still applied. Any way you slice it, it still is legal since the COA is yours as are the installation files (on the HDD/CD). And I have to agree, what diff does it make if you're legal in any case? edit - and look also over here.
  5. 1 - On the Windows 98SE CD "add-ons/pws" (Personal Web Server). (Was, but apparently not anymore) Available as download from MS "NT Option Pack". Note also that it had some fixes (not very secure) for the IIS 4.0 portion. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306898 2 - Apache (or an alternative HTTP server). http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/platform/windows.html 3 - Google - "windows 98" "ftp server" 4 - Google - "windows 98" "http server" (note that Apache does show up) your choice of any freeware (functionality, stability, etc is on you...) Note that even Apache does not allow for security of files/folders since Win9x does not allow for this (as in read-only, etc.).
  6. Ummm, NUSB... and other "patches"...
  7. ? along the same line, a BAT/CMD script to dump, append, and reload ?
  8. Depends on what you mean by "server". What functions do you need for a "server"? 98 (as are all non-NT) are by default "workstations". Agreed, look into Apache. Should allow for FTP and HTTP in a fashion better than what is supplied on the 98SE CD. And, no, "File Sharing" is not necessarily to be construed as "server". I can hook up any number of PC's of any flavor OpSys on a router (even Mac), enable File Sharing on the local network, and they will still be considered Workstations.
  9. (a quote from elsewhere and apparently solved the problem...) "During the install process, choose to format the partition. That error is related to permissions on the existing system32 directory." (another quote...) "As it turned out, the problem was that the Automated Windows XP Installation disk was not prompting to format the partition, therefore, the installation was trying to access a directory that it did not have permission to access causing the file copy failures." (a quote from me...) "Google is also your friend, as are we..." side note - remember that you are doing an OEM install, which requires a "clean install" only (no "upgrade" possible). HTH (edit - DOH - same info in link above... cdob is correct as am I - confirmation of cdob's post given here)
  10. Ummm, check this and SEARCH! It's a bit (but just a bit) more complicated than you may think. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=fi...&pid=883654 It can be done, but you have to have the correct files (for a "clean install", from your PC installation) and the correct key (can also be obtained from your own PC installation; not the COA). Just did this for a friend from his OEM Dell PC (he didn't have the full OEM backup CD, but did have the I386 folder and appropriate files, just had to get his SLP key). And AFAIK, it's legal (your OEM-installed OpSys on original OEM hardware and creating a backup copy).
  11. Routers usually have some version of Linux embedded, kind of like a mini-PC. Unless you can find a router with that function (LOL), I'd say forget it, not happening...
  12. 1 - Illegal and dangerous (as in "altered") but licensing has nothing to do with it. The License is in the Key and the particular flavor of the system. Many PC repair shops have all of the installation media (flavors) available and use the customer's Key when necessary (e.g. re-installation due to really hosed system). 2 - COA on the pc/laptop is not for SLP. The correct files for SLP pre-activation is a different subject/method (enough on that). The COA is only good for valid OEM install CD's/files and still requires validation/activation. 3 - Maybe they did, and yes it will probably destroy the Recovery function. side note - Compaq used to supply the OEM XP Home CD as part of the Recovery CD set. Use of the COA would cause activation to be necessary if CD used separately. If used during the Recovery process, pre-activation (SLP) kicked in. A CD can sometimes be created from the Installation that can be used in the same manner, with the COA (not SLP, again enough on that).
  13. Well, after all the topic is "Why do you still use 9X", so saying "my OpSys" is better is rather ... And as for your XP Uptime... lots of folks have newer than XP and are a lot happier. Peace!
  14. Go here and browse around (long topic) for some potential information.
  15. Not sure (can't remember), but I believe (read it somewhere maybe on MSFN) that VLK versions will always ask for the key regardless. May be wrong.... could be a parameter/keyword in the winnt.sif... (you did say you nlited on XPSP3 to make an image of nlite-XPSP3...) Errr, also see this - http://www.msfn.org/board/slipstream-corpo...79.html&hl=

    ACPI problem

Computer Type "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" is the one you probably want (third from the top when F5 is pressed during normal installs). Installs don't always figure out what your PC really is and may default to "Standard PC" (incorrect). The first two options in the list are "ACPI Uniprocessor" and "ACPI Multiprocessor" (also probably incorrect).
  17. It seems like those that have been around a while should easily be able to recognize spam or flaming. I've at one point in time caught several in a single day and used (OMG!) the "Report" button. So... it should be the responsibility of all long-standing members to be on the lookout for spam and immediately report it. Mods don't have the time to hunt around all day but many regulars notice it. As for the flame-fests, well, any reasonable person should be on the look-out for anything unwarranted and also report it. Respect each other, or just leave or be told to leave. I try (not always successfully) to avoid thos topics, but if they get out of hand the offenders should be warned ("Report") and perhaps the topic closed. After all, it's all in the Rules. Granted, normal members are not Mods or Supervisors, but if I seen someone doing something rather shady in my neighborhood (this is our neighborhood), yer dern-tootin' it's 9-1-1 time. We are, after all, "brothers and sisters" here (one might hope). I originally came here for help with Win9x and hope that it doesn't come to the original suggestion. 'Nuff said...
  18. DOH! I will not swear to this either, but past experience (AFAICR) says IF both partitions are "destroyed" (i.e. deleted - must be done with a Win9x boot floppy), then the Recovery Disks will recreate both (seeing that they are "missing"). Try at your own risk. Recommend backing the whole HDD to another HDD.
  19. Won't swear to this, but I think the answer is yes. Check for any options when booting from the CD or running from Windows. Cancel it if it looks like no options for Complete HDD Restore (?).Try at you own risk as I am not totally positive...
  20. At the risk of being flogged for "something illegal", has anyone tried comparing an ISO's contents slipped on Vista/2k8/Win7 against an ISO's contents slipped on 2k/2k3/XP? I'm betting there's more than the PIDGEN.DLL that's being merged. Can't test this myself (not having the other opsys') but if the PRO version is being inadvertantly slipped, then perhaps other PRO modules/files are as well. This could allow for slipstreaming on the offending opsys' and then replacing the incorrect modules(s) from an extracted SP3 (IC vs IP, and other "renamed" unmentioned here - you figure it out) into the flat folders before "burning". Then it would be unnecessary to install into a VM/other-box just to slip.
  21. 1 - use the "/q" (quiet) switch 2 - AFAIK, you can't - it's a "patch" file to be applied to a given "installed product" via MSI edit - an MSP might be applied to an "Administrative Install" of a given product ("merged")
  22. Ummm... AutoPatcher does not run automatically (AFAICR). It merely "installs" the files for "AutoPatching". Install it, already, and then run a Virus Scanner if you wish. All of the actual "patches" were derived from various legitimate sources (mostly found here on MSFN). The only thing "unique" is/are the BAT files that implement the patches (a certain sequence is necessary due to duplicated/newer modules within). Browse the contents of them... you'll find no magic within! edit - why did I bother to post this comment here???
  23. Have you tried this?IEradicator From the makers of 98Lite... Then install the one of your choice (?)...
  24. Quick answer... have your SCSI controller drivers available on floppy and "Press F5" when you see the message during install (practically right away). Same applies for RAID controllers. Or just read up a liitle (her on MSFN or on MS website) on adding them to an Unattended Slipstreamed version.
  25. Ok... silly suggestion - have you tried going into "Safe Mode" and removing the HDD's and the CD/DVD drives then rebooting into "Normal Mode"?
