Only the INF setup for your chipset is necessary (two "sets" available - 400-series and 800-series). Any BMIDE "setup" is strictly for Windows 95. Tha Application Accelerator may or may not help but won't hurt. Speed gains are only obtained by enabling DMA (as opposed to PIO) and (more or less) nothing else. Agreeing with Drugwash on this one...

? New admin account by giving a computer name? No way! Computer Names are "generated" during/after installation and can be "changed". XP Home has one "hidden" Admin account viewable/accessible only in Safe Mode ("Administrator"). One other Admin Account (you normal one) would be "created" upon first installation (whatever "UserName" you gave). Any others would have to be defined by either of the first two intentionally. No other way they can exist. What "data" are you referring to that you want to "consolidate"? And please explain/clarify "continually hangup" in reference to "downloaded Exp8" (Intenet Explorer 8?). Step-by-step, please, and we'll attempt to resolve your issues with explanations.

Does frequent formatting/defrag spoil HDD?
submix8c replied to iceangel89's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I think the "in another life" link answers your questions. 1 - quick-format - clearing partition table - data still exists 2 - full format - in addition, scans the HDD 3 - manufacturer utilities - "low level" format ("write zeros") according to HDD layout. Only 3-above completely erases. Moot points all, since the OP basically questioned the "wearing out" of the mechanics of the HDD. As for the "magnetic" side of the issue, think of a cassette tape's life spane and what will go wrong (in addition to the mechanics). Same concept... -
Can there be Setup modification project? like 98Lite?
submix8c replied to lama's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
"Integrating" various items into 98 is not that easily done since all of the modules are in CAB's as opposed to 2k, XP, (etc.). Is this the suggestion of the Poll? If so, then it's a lot easier to remove than to insert components (etc). Resources abound here at MSFN (and elsewhere) to "automate" but not "integrate". Not worth the effort to attempt "true integration" as this subject has been brought up many times before with the same "debate" being raised. "Integrated" items would have to be re-CAB'ed according to the original INF's into non-standard CAB sizes, not to mentioned added/removed modules. The only other alternative is to extract from the CAB's, compress all the modules (as in 2k,xp, etc), modify all the INF's accordingly, not to mention the method of "expanding" the modules (not inherent in the 9x-series CAB methodology), among other "stumbling blocks". IMHO. a pointless task as methods like the above-mentioned USP, the UBCD-98SE project (since removed from MSFN due to restrictions), and AutoPatcher-98SE (topic still available) fit the bill nicely. Sooo, to put it bluntly, the idea was never "given up" on; simply not worth the effort. Check around in the forums and you'll see what I mean... And if you want to do it, go ahead - feel free! p.s. - If you notice, the USP is in CAB format as well. -
Before you purchase, check the manufacturer's website for the model in question. Many times the drivers for 9x/ME will still be available for download even though the printer itself doesn't say so.

Does frequent formatting/defrag spoil HDD?
submix8c replied to iceangel89's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
jaclaz is correct. and so are the comments about repeated disk i/o's "beating up" the head mechanics. think about a car that is usually going forward and then you begin constantly shifting forward/reverse, beating up the drive train... -
Which OS are you referring to? Windows ME has Restore Point functionality...

Why would you want to? (note - googling reveals that these could also be placed in other folders or overlay the originals - these are virii/trojans.)

Different Drive for Hard Drive Installation
submix8c replied to odbod's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Go here and browse around (on left in Reference->WINNT.SIF) - http://www.unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/ HTH edit - Also look at "winnt32.exe /h" from a command line. There's a couple of parameters you may find useful (particularly "syspart"). And I assume you're running the command from a 32-bit PE environment (wint32.exe), otherwise... (when/where are you running the START command from)? -
Something similar - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=130437 Noticed that TweakUI (during MSFN Search on "+default +user +profile") may help. Also a topic on the Hive INF. Basically, AFAIK, you have to set one up on a "test install" and get it into your Integrated install. Try the MSFN Search to see what else can be found. Post back your efforts.

IE8 (AFAICR when "testing" on VPC/XP) is "cleaner" than IE7. Wouldn't recommend trying to cross-patch IE6 with IE7/8 modules (I believe it's more-or-less a "complete rewrite"). Try it ya may like it... thinking of putting it on my main PC permanently! Heck, I like it better than FF!!! (err, might want to "tweak" the aggravating pop-ups out... browse MSFN for more info.) edit - my "opinionating" is over here; choose what you like best...

Today I "earned" star number 5 (whatever that means; just checked - "Friend of MSFN"), so I felt compelled to extend a heartfelt "I love you guys" to every single one of the experts here. I have learned more from my friends here than I could have in a paid-for course and hope that I, too, have contributed to those poor lost souls with big problems. If anyone else wants to pop in and add their appreciation, feel free. I just figured someone had to say it and since I'm a fool for volunteerism... Peace! (not a wasted topic/post IMHO) @Tripedacus (below) - Uhhh, not MY parade (I know how it works and the rules)! Mainly just expressing my gratitude (re-read above) as I would hope others would. I don't see "Thx" too often even in the topics. This topic was for MSFN, not me...

Try here - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=41967 or here - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=119169 the second link (if you look) has a post or 2 by "mara-" and in their signature is a link to their "office integrator" (which you might want to try). Also, use the "search" facility (I used "+office2003 +unattended") - check the "help" in the "search" for more info... Your answer(s) will indeed be there.

YTB? Yuck! If you have XP or higher, IE8 would be best as it's far superior to the older versions (even faster). If not, Firefox is the best bet. ( toolbars... )
-
some info - http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-x...lts/132863.html apparently, the Event Viewer has the info, but it's not convenient. A Chkdsk from recover console (at least the above says so) will provide a "log". More info - (p.s. again, fix your avatar... we can't see it because of some security rights... just upload it to MSFN!)
-
IE6 - no... IE7/8 - yes... Firefox has tabs, if you want alternative. Definitely Firefox for older Windows as IE7/8 does not run on anything less than XP.
-
(I hope you mean an XP Evaluation version or an un-activated "friends" copy for "testing"...) BTW, in your other "new" thread, you indicate lockups on the Win2K install... you have virii? I've had absolutely no lockup problems with the correct versions of browsers (or plugins) in Win98SE... By-the-by, XP can still be found, just not directly from MS (and they are pretty cheap - try NewEgg). As for Vista, better check your PC for compatibility - the requirements are much higher than 9x/2k/xp...

Trouble with installing Windows 2000 SP4
submix8c replied to clueless_furball's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
NO!!!! Don't install Win2000 on the same partition! It uses the same folder names (except the WINDOWS is installed to WINNT) as Win9x! Even so, any Win9x drivers you try to use will not work on Win2k (they are different, so get them before install, e.g. VIA/SIS Platform and/or Video)! And be aware some applications will also not run. Read the "PRO1.TXT" file in the SETUPTXT folder for how-to's and valid installation paths. "Upgrading vs. Installing a New Copy"... Also in the SUPPORT folder is a "HCL.TXT" (Hardware Compatibility List) and an "APCOMPAT.EXE" program to test your applications for compatibility. I honestly can't see how you could have done a "clean install" on a pre-existing Windows anyhow... You had to have had errors or warnings! Only "Upgrade" should have worked/been-done... (Unless you dual-boot, installing "clean" on a second partition.) Basically, the rules are the same as for WinXP... -
How to install Windows 98 in modern motherboards using more than 1 GB.
submix8c replied to cannie's topic in Windows 9x/ME
already there (after a fashion) - 1 - Windows 9x Sub-forum 2 - Sticky: Important... (click link inside to...) 3 - "Stickified" list and click on - 4 - Run 9x/ME with > 1 GB RAM 5 - "How to install" tutorial (this topic) just "follow the yellow brick road"... so, you might say it's already a part of the "important/stickified" topics. -
as jaclaz indicates (full-blown explanation and great read - been there!). fwiw, did you set each pc to a different ip? pc1 - 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0 pc2 - 192.168.0.3 /255.255.255.0 always worked for me (leave dns blank/empty; 192.168.0.1 is "usually" used for the dhcp/dns server)... not sure if "uplink" will give you "shared internet" (i don't think so, since it's an "uplink" to the "next-in-chain", i.e. your h/w is only a switch/workgroup item and not a router), so if you need that, you'll probably need another NIC in the "primary" (hooked to ADSL or Cable - ip assigned by ISP dhcp), or just modem dial-up on "primary" (ip assigned). in either case, i believe that the "network connection wizard" from xp will help you out with that (freely available on MS website). there should be a method to do ICS on the 98se/me versions. (more on ICS if you get stuck/need it.) enjoy reading jaclaz' link; it will explain "the whole world of networking" to you.

fyi (re 137gb barrier, in addition to rloew's 98se patch which some people swear by) http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=78592 support for 95OSR2+, 98FE, 98SE, 98ME as I said, pick yer own pizen, pardner! @rloew (ref. below) - check!

DVD-R are superior for DVD movies but if it's larger than ~4.7gb, you'll need to go to DVD+R DL. I'd just go with DVD-R (less being available now for some reason as opposed to DVD+R) and record just the single movies (i.e. not the intro junk and if multiple movies per VCR break them up). Chances are the recorder "burns" at the standard 2.5x (DVD) speed (check that in the specs). my 2cents and widdle knowledge... (forgot to mention - the RW's may be better in case one messes up during burn; you can always "clone" it on your PC to R's. get a couple of R's to test with before spending bucks. -RW's if possible)

Not necessarily true (re 98vsME) -- dx9.0c - Huh? - more drivers - Huh? - easy usb - Huh? - more applications - Huh? Don't visit the 98SE forums much, do ya??? Every single thing available to ME is available to 98/98SE (and then some) with the exception of System Restore (adopted by XP and above). Many of these items are also available to '95 and some others to ME as well. (e.g. 48-bit LBA, usb drivers, etc.) Go browsey-lookey-see... (Heh... this is getting to be fun I'm sure the '95ers will be coming around real soon! and eidenk...)

(Well, I did say so in post #6... Seems the OP hasn't yet responded, so maybe they figured it out. Hate to waste time slipping using nLite, testing, and taking snapshots as I go to provide an unnecessary post. We shall see...)
