  1. Pulled from a DVR - special formats contained (sometimes mini-Linux OS). I picked up a rather large one myself (WD2500JB) at a thrift store. May have an altered "partition type" marker... Do as jaclaz says - get Maxtor Utilities, test the integrity, and then completely "wipe" the HDD (back to "factory"). It will take a while. From there, you should be good. (I had to do the same thing on this WDC 250gb.)
  2. If you have it up-and-running, look for Everest Home Edition (HE) v2.2. It will list everything about your PC. Aida32 (v3.9x) would also probably work (I believe it was the pre-Everest software, of which the above version is the last Free edition).
  3. Hmmm... If Win2k8 doesn't support it, how about a Linux installation solely for the purpose of roll-out to the other machines? Heck it probably could just be a low-end oldie-PC... Hook it into the network and... Comments, anyone?
  4. Wanna get rid of that "flicker"? Bump the refresh rate the next higher (above "59") if your hardware is capable and be happy...
  5. Here's the freeware version - http://www.pchealthoptimizer.com/freeware.php
  6. OK... search for something called CabPack (google it). I use it; it's a GUI interface for makecab (similar to cabarc) and will do everything needed/wanted. Be sure to get the "update" as well. Here it is directly from the author - http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/cabpack.htm Info + download link for MS SDK - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618 (old thread, but there ya go...) edit - forgot to mention - runs fine on ME/2K/XP/2K3 edit2 - points of interest (while searching for "makecab.ovl") "(note: it renames makecab.exe to makecab.ovl)" "Later makecab.exe versions are limited to specific windows versions."
  7. "PC Health"??? Isn't that just available in newer Windows (non-Server, non-Win9x)? The "System Restore" feature (1st go-around was WinME)... Correct???? --- edit - Err, scratch that - re-read the topic... --- edit2 - http://www.pchealthoptimizer.com/userguide.php claims - Intel or AMD 133mhz or Better, 32MB RAM 30MB of Hard Drive Space Recommended Windows 98/98SE/XP/2000/2003/NT/Vista Free version 2.5 available at website... What DLL is "missing"?
  8. ?? Here is a reference (with other references) - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287070 (claims networked PST is unsupported and causes problems)
  9. Please do not mention "pirated" again. SATA drivers can be integrated into your original XP CD, in addition to Service Pack 3 (the IT install version). This is to be done using the latest version of nLite. There are also methods of making a USB drive bootable for the purpose of Install to HDD. All of this info and links to the associated software is already available here. Please take the time to search MSFN with appropriate keywords OR in the associated forum ("stickies" to important topics are there, including your "problem areas"). Try an orderly step-by-step test of each phase of your project instead of everything-at-once. I suggest you work on making the USB bootable first. Please note that you will have to have the SATA drivers available to the Bootable USB in addition to available within the XP ISO image (the second phase). Then add in the SP3 (the third phase). Then (ad-nauseum)... p.s. - There is also a way to cause "mkisofs" (the program used to create the CD ISO image within nLite) to create a DVD image if you can't get the USB stuff to work.
  10. Go here, read info and download latest Flash 9 and you're good to go.
  11. If the usage and intent is not for said "commercial hosting service", then what's the problem? Is this all the OEM License says? I assume you mean "EULA"... The thing is, I don't see that wording in the XP Home OEM Version (the only one I have access to) and I believe that you can host a Personal Website on it. I think the keyword here is "commercial". Is that the intent of the lessee? If so, if theres a violation or not.
  12. http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=4702&tag=nl.e550 Newsworthy in Technology News? I kinda thought so. Also a kind of warning, methinks.
  13. This is the best I can come up with... Microsoft info, etc. (look in the License Agreement section)
  14. ??? I will be corrected if wrong, but if the XP remains on the pc's with the OEM sticker intact (or even removing them and keeping a log of which key is appended to which pc), then probably so. The primary thing is that a given key is kept (in some fashion) with the original pc. I believe since you purchased the pc's with the XP on them along with the associated stickers that the rights are legally transferred to you (the owner), and not to your lessees. The only reason I mention removing the stickers (if possible without destroying them) is to prevent the lessee from using it (the key) on another pc (which is possible). Hopefully, they have not already been compromised (pre-your-purchase). You might even want to construct the associated CD for future re-installs (in case a given pc gets hosed). Finally (a question), do they all have the XP Pro OEM on them? If not, you will probably have to reload them as appropriate. Correct me, please, anyone having more in-depth knowledge...
  15. Please specify the "tweaks". Also, you can disable (I believe) the restart via F8 so you can see what the error code is on boot.
  16. Go here and read post #2. I don't know if you can "move" the Installer folder as it (usually) contains the icons and MSI sub-sets from the installation (e.g. the "options" you choose) and are "required". Also, read this for a warning. As for the other "bloat", use CCleaner, since many files can be safely deleted by it (install it, run it, and look under the Applications tab for which ones it recognizes). This proggy is widely used and recognized. And a warning, watch out for the other options within, since they may/may not cause problems when used (i.e. the Registry clean section). Just a small bit of assist... anyone else?
  17. ? Maybe it "failed" because you asked it to install a driver for a non-existent piece of hardware ? Try selecting ONLY the drivers you need, maybe one-by-one. I'd start with the video first.
  18. Betting the AMD board has a Via chipset. The "old school connectors" are the COM ports. Both will require (since there's no mention of integrated video) an AGP video card inserted in the AGP slot (probably AGP 4x variety). "Little slot" is probably AMR or CNR (useless). I vote the AMD also (if keeping). Get a Video Card (AGP 1x/2x/4x; read up on the difference on how the slots are built), plug in a dependable power supply, a keyboard, a stick of PC2100 (DDR-type), and a Monitor and file the bad boys up and observer the BIOS-id then search on what the MoBo is. Also, check exactly what the CPU's are (writing on the top/bottom). Go here - http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4003 for which type you may need (depending on the CPU, divide the speed designated and match to CPU). AMD Athlon XP-2400+ / 453 pins / 2000MHz (133x15.0) / (64-bit dual-pumped bus) 1.6v or 1.65v (Two varieties - Thoroughbred and Thornton) Please note that the designation is higher than actual CPY speed. Celeron-2.0G / 478 pins / 2000MHz (100x20) / (64-bit quad-pumped bus) 1.475v or 1.5v or 1.525v Look here (some info on quad-pumped) - http://www.ocforums.com/archive/index.php/t-292286.html So... it might need RDRAM (dunno). Any markings on the boards to identify them?
  19. Disk Management - Right-Click Change Drive Letter... Sata2 to X Sata3 to D Sata2 to E Note that the Drive Letters are the Partitions, not the actual HDD...
  20. Yes I see its not working the way I thought it wood in frontpage. Once I got it on the web I found it added an extra http:// to every link on every page, but hopefully I will get it up and running soon.??? May be wrong here, but I think it happens when the pages are uploaded. If it's created and "run" in the same location, it seems ok... only when "uploaded". Haven't been able to confirm this, but my FrontPage experiments (all I've done so far) seem to be fine if URL points directly to it (I use no-ip_dot_org since I have a dynamic IP) and accessed from anywhere else. FWIW...
  21. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm in error, but I believe that a Mapped Network Drive is only a "pointer" to a Share on the Server and the accesses are controlled there by User, Group, etc.
  22. Might I respond by saying - ???? Please explain... If you mean from the Installation Source which may be on your HDD (e.g. I386 folder vs. Install CD), then search around for simple instructions. Otherwise, ?????

  24. You have no other alternative if this is not a large OEM (i.e. SLP, method three) install but method 2 (suggested by Ponch, after the last activation) or method 1 (activate it). Method 1 is what you continue to do and it may cease to activate (i.e. too many times). Method 1 will only work (do a search on how-to) on the exact same PC with the exact same hardware (kind of like a "clean recovery install").No other way about it from what you have described. And the description you provide does not appear to be a Recovery CD per-se (does it put the PC into a first-loaded state as in Big OEM's?) but simply a "copy" of the OEM System Builder CD; the "key" is your own for your installation only. I had the same situation with a neighbor except they lost (or wasn't given) the Installation CD so I had to get their "key" and "over-the-top" reinstall/reactivate from my personal backup copy. (Neighbor PC built by a reputable local shop, BTW). And, yes I slipped SP3 (kids and viruses; gotta love the kids browsing the web for "games")... edit - I personally have never tried the Method 2; good luck...
  25. Hate to tell you this, but it appears that Win9x is definitely not supported. You may be wasting your time... The only other alternative may be (if you feel the need for Win9x) is to run the OS in VirtualPC as a Guest on the XP OS as the Host and loop-back. I see no other alternative, as it appears that only the storage is useable on Win9x using perhaps NUSB...
