Adobe Reader won't install in Vista
submix8c replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
CONFIG.JS filename = reader1.exe Auto-IT Script - Run("AdbeRdr910_en_US_Std.exe") Photo says - Expected Filename = AdbeRdr910_en_US_Std.exe ? Haven't used Auto-IT for some time now, but... where will it Unpack the Installer (the one in Run stmt) file to? Therein lies your problem I believe... Why would you use an Auto-IT install with WPI anyway? -
Uh, no... Just rerun the main program and follow the instructions to get it out of TEMP folder. The main program is just an "unpacker"; then Cancel/Exit/whatever. Guess you (or the instructions) missed that part (ref post#2 - said so there). Start the installer, then DON'T click OK(whatever), then go to TEMP, get the MSI, then CANCEL...

Read this post. This file is NOT language-dependent, even though it says "ENU", it crosses all languages (in simple terms). edit - and FWIW, it now appears to have a "wrapper" (for EULA purposes) installer. The file inside conforms to the "old" way (an UPDATE-type installer). So, you could Unpack the "Outer" to get to the "Inner" ("Old" way) if you have a need for that... HTH

FWIW, agreeing with Drugwash on the "incompatible web pages". I have noticed the same thing. Not sure why (finally coming into compliance?). Firefox seems to be ok (always tried to be compliant?). Since older Windows are being "dropped", the IE6 might continue to work, but try to find an alternative browser that still supports the older OS'...

CMI8338 is (I think) same as CMI8738 - found it here - http://tower.tomsk.ru:8080/drivers/sound/C..._WDM_0639ME.zip and here's the web page for the CMI8338 - http://tower.tomsk.ru:8080/drivers/sound/CMedia/CMI8338/

OK, FWIW.... http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom...rotect_cd.shtml Methods and tools (appear to be perfectly legal).

You could temporarily add the appropriate lines into the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS until you get the Chipset Drivers installed... this may be the reason not showing up. Your first mistake was installing Win98 before "collecting" the appropriate drivers. Heck, you started ranting and didn't even tell what kind of PC, what Chipset, wht type of CD-Rom. Hard to help with so much info lacking.... CONFIG.SYS - device=C:\WINDWS\COMMAND\EBD\oakcdrom.sys /D:MYCD001 lastdrive=z AUTOEXEC.BAT - LH C:WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MYCD001 /L:Z With above, CD-ROM should show up as Z-drive.

Have these partitions been "hidden"? (If so, here we go!)

HP Notebook: The recovery partition could not be found
submix8c replied to ahmad2080's topic in Software Hangout
( to clarify at risk of offending... ) ( MBR = 1st sector of Physical HDD, e.g. Disk0, Disk1, etc ) ( Partition Boot "Sector" for NTFS = 1st 16 Logical Sectors of Logical Disk, e.g. Partition, e.g. C-drive, D-drive, etc ) ( each Physical HDD, in this case ONE, will have one or more Partitions, in this case TWO! ) ( sequence of events - BIOS points to HDD as set inside HDD MBR-code ALSO has Partition Definitions - MBR "boots" to Active Partition Partition Boot "boots" the Operating System ) ( SO! 3 hex listings necessary - 1 - 1st Sector of HDD 2 - 1st 16 Sectors of C-drive 3 - 1st 16 Sectors of D-drive ) -
Well huh! Appears to be a UPS Tracking Widget. You (or someone) installed it. If you don't need it, it can be uninstalled (see second link). UPS Widget - http://www.widget.ups.com/en-gb/index.html http://www.widget.ups.com/widget/en-gb/faq.html

HAH! I suspected that Partition Boot may be one of the culprits. Some kind of flag and "special boot code"... Maybe I didn't say (long windy topic) but I should have. You might want to save all the GOOD stuff for the future and maybe other poor soles. note - be careful with that C-boot-sector... -
(not to waste a post but...) Agreed. It seems that some folks have fallen for Fake Emails and Pop-Ups lately. System Restores, Recoveries, Repair Installs, (Upgrade) Reinstalls, and complete cleaning via connecting to ther PC's seems to be the only way to get rid of some of these. Seems Conficker has cut loose a lot of bad people using scare tactics.

Cheers! Glad you've made progress...

IE6SP1 is not OS-dependent (re WinFE vs WinSE) except that it will not run on older OS (eg Win95, NT4, others). Bear in mind IE6SP1 is an upgrade to the IE of the installed OS (whatever version), so this problem may or may not be related to IE, or even the OS, or it could even be both. To confirm the IE6SP1, list the contents of the downloaded package (is that what the list is?). Some updates to the OS may relate to the IE. FWIW, you may even try to get the latest IE6 package (complete) and try re-installing. The other guys know what they're doing/saying, so I'm outta here! edit - Drugwash, is my above stmt re OS-dependency incorrect? A complete reinstall worth a shot?

I won't swear to this, but I believe that the process will continue where you left off if interrupted. The only alternatives (as I see it) are - 1 - Put the HDD in another PC as a Secondary. The Bootable Primary will have to be a Win2k OS or above (eg another XP). Then browse to "Documents and Settings", then the Profile Folder (his user-id name?), then Desktop. Whatever he placed it in, open it up (however) and get the key. Put the HDD back in the PC. 2 - Download a Linux Bootable LiveCD that can access NTFS onto another PC, burn it, boot to it, and do same as above (except moving the HDD part). If the document is in a format that can't be opened by a Linux program (may/may not?) then copy it to a floppy and take it to a PC that can open it. (edit - a PE e.g. BartPE may work just as well - PE=Preinstall Environment) After you get the key, just start the PC up and it should resume where it left off. HTH

Gotta admit... pretty funny!

Aw, XPerties, it's so much easier to just sprinkle a little sand in the DVD-ROM bearings to slow it down and add a little axle grease to quiet it down. That way you don't have to wait for the glue to dry. I also find that setting a stack of cinder blocks on top of the the tower reduces fan vibrations. And if you put a large magnetic C-clamp across your hard drives you can ensure that they will stay in place without worry of the screws coming loose.

(Solved) Removed Viruse Now Blue Screens?
submix8c replied to Redhatcc's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
"Not losing any information" is a little generic. Worst case is, try to grab the Key (you probably already did that?), blow away the main folders (mainly Windows?), and just reinstall giving a new UserID and they can browse around and collect their "information". Of course, as stated, will probably have to reinstall Programs. Might want to back up Outlook/Outlook Express + Address Book (if they used it). OEM install with Recovery Partition? Sometimes they provide a Reinstall without "loss" (not sure if that would help). I seem to recall copying certain Recovery Hives into the normal places and getting back up (still, losing any post-installed software). Virii/Trojans can really screw ya up... Hope the HDD is still good (and large enough)... -
You might look at this too... "Download Everything" (yada-yada) - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=109264

Haven't tried lately, but... Using an Ubuntu-based LiveCD, I was able to share between 2k3 and the running Ubuntu (sharing files on the Ubuntu-running PC). Share as usual on the running system(s), with appropriate security. The OS is irrelevant via TCP/IP. (p.s. LiveCD must have had some kind of Samba setup?...) Ennyhoo, you should be fine (even though I lack sufficient info to pass on to you).
