I'm curious if it is just me, I could be wrong however but with FF3 any opening of an OPEN dialog box (uploading, saving an image, etc) results in FireFox crashing. Also, viewing some pages that use transparency hides all text (which is plainly seen on many MySpace pages). Any possible idea what could be causing this; such as whether it's FF3, UberKern, or other reason specific?. That's strange, are you sure you are running Uberkern with the lastest version of KernelEx?
-
After use a long while back, I found that using the emulated transparency option in Madotate tends to cause significant resource leaks.

The point if it being a wrapper is no longer the point. Once integrated into KernelEx, there will no longer be any need to wrap such programs. One such noticable bits is how FF3 required 'GetLastInput()' pre-patching which is one of the currently Missing API's through KernelEx that a few programs require. Such programs would be unlikely to also have a wrapper for it therefor allowing integration into KernelEx to satisfy such an API need. Should it be integrated - it will help advance the development of KernelEx even further and might even take advantage of KernelEx's added support for Export Forwarding.

I don't know of any such way to import registry 'archives' from regedit5 into regedit 4. Only way I know of such is merging regedit5 registry files into regedit 4 by changing the first line 'registry editor 5' to 'REGEDIT4' to be able to merge it.

Although somewhat costly (and difficult to get nowadays), I've found a GeForce 6800 (ultra) to be rather rebust, powerful, and good under 98. Also, you might find the following thread useful: Best graphics card for 98SE? http://www.msfn.org/board/Best-graphics-ca...&hl=graphic

Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE

Bah, 0/10 here. Better luck next time I guess. *breaks down in tears* I'm an epic fail as a male.

Mozilla flat-out dropped win9x since the initial release of FireFox 3 beta, however, there is a patch produced by Tihiy to rectify this issue. Just because support is removed doesn't mean there isn't a way to make it work. Examples: UberKern (Patches ff, gtk+, etc for use on win98) KernelEx (Unicode program support+more) Revolutions Pack (better 3rd party shell support, skinning+etc) Besides, there are plenty other programs out there that still work, still are supported, and provide equivalent functionality (sometimes more). Believe it or not, there are still programs being made and enhancements being made for even Win3.1!

What version of DOS USB drivers are you using? I've found using the driver version 2.06(?) is rediculously slow and doesn't run USB2 capable drives/hubs at USB2 speeds (only 'supports' them). Driver v2.20 or v2.24 should get the speed you need and is significantly more stable. Just the lack of hotplug support and such is the only drawback when in windows
-
Well, not quite booted directly off it. It's getting help from a custom bootcd to load USB2 drivers through dos amongst a host of other bits (which is the config.sys up top). Which is then loading windows off the thumbdrive under drive C: I've not tried the WinME smartdrive. Is there any significant difference between the win98se / winme smartdrv disk cache? Perhaps better handling or even performance? Also, so far it's working fine at the moment. Trying to stress it a bit and the normal steps I used to reproduce the lockups aren't happening right now (load IE window, open high filecount folder, then copy a folder of 325 midi's to ramdrive which then locksup fully halfway through). I'd disabled the VirtualHDirq and Disabled Protected Mode Harddisk interrupt handling. Seeing how that goes (so far so good) for the moment. I tried that patch Shadetreelee had linked to - it didn't solve my problem at all (thanks though!). It had still occured untill I started going through some troubleshooting options. Although I'm starting to think it may be driver (or cache clashing between smartdrv/vcache) related as I'm running the CD drive through 32-bit mode and the (thumb)local drive in 16-bit.

~~snip it's not a very good laptop so i will also greatly benefit from removing unwanted services that cause massive amounts of disk IO, such as error reporting, restore service, windows defender, etc. I would have to agree with timmer fully in this respect. When using any form of flash memory as the primary drive, the more you can reduce overall disk I/O the better. Not only for performance sakes but for the overall life of the flash memory.

So far, BETA5 is missing the following dependancies (check of the main firefox executable). USER32.DLL GetLastInputInfo() GDI32.DLL GetTextExtentExPointI() GetGlyphIndicesW() GetGlyphIndicesA() GetFontUnicodeRanges()

Are you sure the copy you installed wasn't Second Edition? Also, the correct version number for First Edition is actually 4.10.1998 not 4.10.1098
-
It should install just fine w/ 1gb ram. What sort of 'error' is occuring? We are unable to help without knowing exactly what you're issue is. Best I can figure is removing a stick of ram if it isn't a single 1GB module, and then try installing. Once installed, run 'MSCONFIG' from start->run and limit ram to 512. Reboot and then install any packages / updates you need to and then uncheck the ram limit option in MSCONFIG since the unofficial service packs address this problem.

No, it provided code for emulating Windows OS. The code itself is targeted for linux and could not be run on Windows. It certainly cannot replace any of the Windows libraries. It has the same frontend(which requires no reverse-engineering, since it's sufficiently well documented in MSDN), but a completely different backend. Sorry for the plug but figured it was relevant to this. WINE - Win32 Binaries / DLLs http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=112520 Not sure what use they would be though other than extending what isn't on older windows OS's (win3.1 perhaps?)

A Link Checker script

Of course, one wouldn't remove a floppy drive for the sake of just removing it if it REALLY exists (that would be pure silliness!). The case here is where windows adds an entry for 'drive A' as if there actually was such a drive but never was. Hence the removal of the drive letter of an 'invisible' floppy. Happens with some mainboards and/or BIOS' which don't give the option to disable the controller. Even though the floppy controller doesn't even physically exist on the system or is disabled, windows continues to detect it's 'existance' and assign a drive letter.
-
I have this issue as well on my laptop. No way to remove the drive and there is no floppy controller on my laptop. Disabling the 'detected' controller in windows did nothing in this respect as well. I've found using a tool called 'DLMANIP' to remove it during startup does the trick. Insert it in your autoexec. bat file to remove it prior to boot. Usage in autoexec.bat would be: dlmanip delete A DLMANIP Project page: http://sta.c64.org/dlmanip.html

Not sure why it's been doing this and just now noticing it recently while being slightly more aggressive with my system. Never had this problem untill just recently... I've been using the smartdrive disk cache (MSDOS7.1) for my system ever since setting it up. Now whenever i 'push' it by hitting it with multiple reads at once, it causes a complete system lockup (requiring a restart). I'm used to getting the occasional standstill during occasional writes (whicn clears up once it's done writing) but this happens only with read caching. Say for instance, I copy 300 midi's to a ramdrive using a command console, it will lockup halfway through and just freeze. If I run an instance of internet explorer and load two pages at once (temp files cache in ramdrive), smartdrive causes the system to lockup yet again. If I were to disable smartdrive, I don't get these issues. Would rather keep using it since the drive my system runs on can only run in compatibility mode (Pny-Attache' USB2 4gb FLASHdrive). Purpose also for smartdrive is to minimize read/write requests since I know a flash drive can only handle so many over time and this particular one is slow (~950kb write, ~8mb read). Are the any other disk caches out there that could be used and is comparable (or better?) to Microsofts SmartDrv? I tried pc-kwik 3.0 but the physical drive layout is unknown to it and so would not work (would have been nice though as it can prioritize reads over writes). Creative Labs receives some serious community bashing
Chozo4 replied to MikeyHunt's topic in Windows Vista
Glad I'd gotten this headsups after reading the news posts. I was saying to myself: 'Self! Would it be worth maybe upgrading to vista at some point?' Being that I have mainly creative cards as well, I would have to use them. However, nothing gets to me more than having shoddy hardware support once knowing it's possible to get 'good' hardware support. It's like giving a baby cold milk even though the warm milk it wants is.. right... THERE in front of it but can't have because the warm milk is 'too good' for it. Random note: the creative threads are 197 pages, will be 200 in a few mins. >.> -
Basically 'Fun with desktop.ini'... For some reason my start menu had been 'locked out' and all access to it redirected me to 'my computer'. After poking around it with the command line, I figured out why. Somehow a desktop.ini got into there that was causing the startmenu folder to be treated as a redirect. Fixed it and played around with the desktop.ini and 'target.lnk' to use as a way to 'lock out' folder access from general prying eyes (other users for example) without having to use 'hidden' files. Only drawback is, it doesn't prevent the folder from being deleted unless it is a system protected folder. You will not be able to [un]lock it using windows, you'll have to use the command line (dos box command line is fine too). Notes are in the archive. Just place the desktop.ini and target.lnk in the folder to be locked and apply readonly and/or system attributes to the folder. Do a refresh and voila, won't be able to open it. Word of caution, ANY accesses to the folder will be denied (exception being the command line). Meaning cant open files, can't search it, etc. so be careful what folder you are 'locking'. I have no use for this but would figure others to find it interesting. Note: This may or may not work on other system setups. The system I noticed/tried this on is Win98se with revolutions pack 7.1. Haven't access to my other systems to tryand if it works on regular setups. Your Mileage May Vary. FolderLock.rar

Glad to see your problem had been solved aloha. As an aside, rather than ask for the thread removed - perhaps leave it here so it shows up on forum searches. Surely there will be others who experience the same issue and would love to see this solution.

Judging from the hardware given, that setup should run just perfectly fine. I run EPoX boards myself and they've been rock solid and 98 drivers still supplied up through the NForce 3U series. The Nvidia is more than supported without problems as well and works well in tandem with an NForce chipset. Would suggest updating all available dirvers however once you set it up. Drivers provided on installation disks provided with the hardware are typically rather outdated. Only thing you *might* have troubles with is configurable through the BIOS (usually press F1 or DEL to get into setup during memory check). Having both IDE channels running and SATA channels running will cause problems upon driver assignment as they both try to assign under the same parent (OS yells at you and blue-screens with a system halted to prevent issues). So, in the bios, if NOT using any SATA drives, it is best to select the On-Board SATA controller setting and set to DISABLE. [Likely not to apply to your needs so, don't let it confuse you] However, they would both work if your BIOS had an option to set the SATA controller to emulate itself as an additional IDE controller. Another workaround should you need both IDE and SATA together which I had thought of recently which could work is to run the IDE or SATA drives in MSDOS compatibility mode to avoid conflicts in windows and thus only end up with only one of the controllers loaded with 32-bit drivers. [/end] Links to drivers: EPOX: http://www.epox.com.tw/eng/support.php?ps=230&type=2 NVIDIA: ---Mainboard chipset http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_win9x_4.27.html ---Graphics Card http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_81.98.html As far as dual-booting linux, I am not sure which install method would be recommended for your flavour of linux. So, best to check the installation documentation for it first before setting it up for dual boot. Many a time you'll need to setup more than 1 partition to run both, meaning using 'fdisk' in dos mode to split up the drive into 'slices'. I have trouble trying to explain things dead simple at first so, I apologize if any of this has confused you any. Wish you luck setting up your new system.
