Dumbest thing I'd done was clean and put my casing back together when half asleep. I have 2 External USB Drive Enclosures, one for a backup HD and another for a DVD-Rom. Both different brands so different plug types. One used a regular 3-prong power connector for it like most PSU's, the other used a power connector that 100% matched the PS\2 device standard (seeing where this is going)? At the time I was also using a PS\2 extension cord for my keyboard that was the same look and colour as the ps\2 power cord from one of my enclosures. I didn't realize I plugged my keyboard into the external case supply and the external enclosure power into my mainboards ps\2 keyboard port. ... a few minutes later I'm wondering why my keyboard isn't lighting up and responding (booted into windows fine). I decide to check the cords and realize what I'd done. ... Needless to say I no longer have a functional ps\2 keyboard port on my mainboard. Keyboard will light up briefly when I put in it for a moment but is not reconized as even being there at all. Thank god for PS/2-to-USB adaptors. Moral of the story: Mind your plug and don't jack on to the wrong ports. ... Suprised it's even allowable to make power plugs match the PS\2 Plug type.

Fresh install might be your best bet - however, what kinds of 'crashes' are you experiencing? Blue-Screens? Illegal Operation Errors? WHat does it say is causing these errors if so? As for vid card, you have one but it's integrated into your mainboard.

Slow recycle bin emptying might be due to the HD. Have you defragmented recently? Also the Recycle bin emptying can get slow if deleting many many files at once. Also, I recall there having been issues with System Monitor Reading the CPU correctly in the past. Have you tried reading CPU activity with other monitors such as SpeedFan?

Enable48BitLBA | Break the 137Gb barrier!

Should be fine but if I'm correct - winxp had the same 137gb problem till Service Pack 2, no? ...or was that RTM only? -
Enable48BitLBA | Break the 137Gb barrier!
Chozo4 replied to LLXX's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
There is no way to recover those files I'm afraid as they'd been overwritten after the writing beyond 137gb rolled over to the start of the disk and wrote over any existing files. -
Open source WinUSB: the portable Windows !
Chozo4 replied to patchworks's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Sounds interesting overall but unless I'm missing something completely... It's not really hard to install onto a thumdrive or any USB drive as long as your bios support's booting from USB. However, if it the bios doesn't support it but supports booting from a CD or floppy it will still work. I'd been working on a USB BootCD myself recently due to replacing my laptops hard drive with a usb thumbstick. It works just fine and supplies USB2.0 speeds through compatibility mode with a 4gb stick. Only drawback is that you cannot detect any other USB devices in windows it seems beyond what was there during the intial bootup (still trying to figure out a workaround for this). note: They say 256mb minimum but.. I've installed even mindows (roughly 17mb size) without any issues on a thumbstick >.> the only thing I can see of this project is if it provides completely functional but generic drivers to support whatever system it's being run on. For booting off a USB stick without bios support, you mainly need a plain bootdisk with: HIMEM.SYS IFSHELP.SYS (for Fat32/VFAT? support) DBLBUFF.SYS (will be slowish without) USBASPI.SYS (v2.20) ASPIDISK.SYS SMARTDRV.EXE (*) XMSDSK.EXE (To copy all DOS command files to a ramdisk - reduces file queries from the stick) XCOPY32.EXE (For copying to ramdisk) ... along with changing the DOS variables such as PATH and TEMP to tell it to look on the ramdisk and to put temp files on the ram disk as well. *=Used to reduce queries to the thumbstick and reduce wear on the stick. Thumbdrives don't last forever due to supposedly limited I/O operations before the NAND flash wears out. So best to try to reduce the queries to the stick during normal use as much as possible while still allowing normal use and system changes. -
THink I replied here once before in the past but... Using Embark right now. The service is not bad at all but as of late they've been annoying the living heck out of me. Every 24-hours your 'preferences' are reset it seems. So most legit sites (and all 404's) get redirected to embarks 'web search' by their DNS and even AFTER setting the preferences to 'disable redirection service' it still redirects me for a good hour afterward! >_<

Had no real problem viewing here. Not too bad of an old song but still >.> Don't see the funny in being annoyed endlessly. Page gets focus when you maximize it and bring it up from the task bar (JS didn't fail, the page coder failed there). Also- the whole unload action can be passed through by just holding enter. Bloody thing repeats all of the lyrics before letting you 'navigate away' from the page. IE5.5 here >.> ALso hugely bad practice , the person changes links 'daily' to basically spam search engines and avoid being filtered out of searches. >.<

It's possible to prevent it using a registry tweak but you will not be able to login unless the user can be authenticated from a domain server. Believe it only applies to the use of 'Client for Microsoft Networks' login rather than microsoft family login.

USB ThumbDrive as Laptop HDD Replacement
Chozo4 replied to Chozo4's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I'd forgotten to mention this is being done with a laptop. Mentioned it before but somehow removed it without realizing it during an edit (Corrected now). Being a laptop I have no cooling options at all and the harddisk in mine sits about 1/4" from the CPU/Heatsink with no ventilation for the drive itself. I had used MBM long ago and during normal use the HardDisk was stated to be around 140F (which personally is too hot for even my tastes). I've been replacing the disks with manufacturer drives (toshiba) and haven't too many choices in drives. Many equivalent sized disks aren't the exact same in thickness and so will be just that little hair too thick to fit in. Even the manufacturer drives for my specific model (Toshiba Satellite A15-S157) I've been using are a tight fit. Thanks for the point toward sandisk, Geek. I'll check into them next time I'm out Those solid state disks right now are a tad far out of my price range Knowing that they won't last as long due to limited I/O Operations, I'll start redoing my windows setup a small bit. SmartDrv Disk Cache with a large buffer should help reduce read/write's to the drive itself. As well as relocating some of the frequently accessed programs/files to a ramdisk, -
1) What brand is the most reliable (Long lasting and can handle longterm use)? 2) What brand/model is the best performer (Quick access/response times)? 3) Of the ones mentioned in 1&2, which would be the best choice price wise (under $40)? 4) What is it's storage size? (4gb+ preferred) Main reason for the questioning is due to my getting tired of spending $120+ replacing the hard disk drive almost yearly due to heat and heavy use chewing them down. I managed to build a boot-cd to provide USB2 Storage support through DOS to load Windows off of it no problems so the setup is smooth. Just seeking a good replacement so I won't need to use a 'loaner' 4gb thumbdrive anymore (was for testing purposes) and don't want to spend on a slow stick with poor access/transfer times. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe it can be run. THere are several unresolved dependencies in the U3 Software: SetupAPI.dll CM_Get_Sibling CM_Get_Child CM_Get_Parent CM_Get_DevNode_Registry_PropertyW CM_Locate_DevNodeW Kernel32.dll Process32FirstW Process32NextW *PsAPI.dll ( Missing File ) * = 'MIGHT' be doable with the dummy psapi.dll but might not work. edit in: DO note however that the U3 Software is in no way required to use the thumbdrive at all. Using one with the U3 system built-in as my laptops C: drive (even though it doesnt natively support it through the bios). Got tired of replacing its' hard disk on a near yearly basis... *shrugs*. >.>

I'd posted this in the actual RP thread but seems it would have been better to be put here. It's a basic remake of the windows 3.1 look. I don't have win3.1 available at the time to get full skinning ideas from so I'd to work from screenshots found on the web. The theme was designed to be as small in size as possible which is noticable through a trimmed down skin.ini and 16-colour bitmaps. Caption button depressions and regular button depressions aren't available >.< Screenshot (note: 124kb jpeg) Windows_3.1.rar

HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript here. Mostly simple web-based programming for now. .. well, I used to do work with batch alot in the past for simple application-like scripts when I needed to whip one together. I did try to learn Assembly as well but there are very few somewhat-usable tutorials available >.>

I keep coming back to Unreal tournament 2k3 personally. Though I have been enjoying (alot) an MMORPG called 'Mabinogi' (Although there is no internationalized version out.... yet).

Rather slim on choices O.o' Selected 'OTHER' since Win98Se isn't listed Using it mainly for application compatibility, smaller size, low requirements, and it fits every one of my needs without issue. Be it gaming, running as a 24/7 webserver, or development platform... it has yet to fail me

For the time being, you can actually fix that (by changing the text to black) by adjusting the following lines: Open C:\windows\resources\SilverXP\Skin.ini Look for: TaskText=255 255 255 ClockText=255 255 255 Change to: TaskText=0 0 0 ClockText=0 0 0 Save and then reselect SilverXP.

98 has plenty of AGP support That is only limited by your mainboard. Out of the setups the setup I would recommend as the main one would be: Parts: Athlon XP 1.4GHz [i'm an AMD nut] 512MB PC2700 PCI Geforce MX4000 IDE 80GB WD I recommend the PCI GF4 of the two because the AGP GF2 you have will be overall slower than the PCI GF4 (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, I've discovered the GeForce 4000 to be VERY overclockable by up to 50% stable as long as you screw on a small fan to it's passive heatsink.

new website layout
Chozo4 replied to pauluk83's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
It has a very clean and professional look to it. Very nicely done Only thing I found wrong offhand were your links on the links page which were not working on click. Looking at the source you forgot to add the 'href' attribute to them so they'd actually go somewhere. Judging by the source, what editor did you use? -

Ice was maintaining a MAC theme port for a bit. A screenshot of it (although originally made for an older version of lameskin) can be found H E R E . SOrry for the large size (90kb or so) but it's a desktop cap >.>

I don't see the reason to be ranting and raving over a couple of 'minor' issues despite your webview not working as it was before and other such issues. Using UNOFFICIAL software will have it's quirks and trvial bits to it. You knowingly run the risks of there being issues upon choosing to use it and should therefor either accept it or not. As the packs mature things are ironed out and issues are fixed. All unofficial packs are still generally WORKS IN PROGRESS meaning they will be continued to be developed for quite some time. These are projects done by those devoting their free time to something they have pride in and are happy to share with others. The whole 'tech support' part is just the one person themself and/or the community. Not a 24/7 full-stocked staff at an expensive office (who most of the time don't know the answer to begin with anyway!). When something doesn't work or happen as expected on another users machine it can be rough to track down when it was all working as expected on the developers machine. They don't have hundreds of machines to test it on of all sorts and types of configurations... .. that is when it all falls to us, the users of these packs. If something goes wrong it is up to US to help make it better by contributing to it. THis can be done through: 1) Submitting ideas 2) Reporting any bugs we find 3) Figuring out how to work around a 'bug' and sharing it to other users of it in the respective thread. 4) Try to replicate this 'bug' and give step by step information toward how it was done. By contributing to a project you help it mature. Be it through submitting bug reports and helping to replicate these bugs to help the developer narrow down the reasoning for it. Many a time odd quirks will appear when unexpected which even the developer will not be able to readily fix. Again, remember that many projects are manned by a single individual and so cannot know everything. Alot of 'quirks' will also be expected when working with Proprietary software, so.. there is little sourcecode to work with which in turn makes alot of projects even HARDER to get together 'just right'. Rather than just tell everybody 'no dont use it that project is satans child! repent!' why not contribute to it some rather than shun it because you had some bad experiences. Sure, you might have gotten a harsh word from the developer yourself but then when you're seemingly bashing a project which the developer has much pride and 'vested much time toward, you'll get a hit for it. Wouldn't you feel a bit upset when someone seems to be bashing your work rather than contributing to it when it's still in progress? Personally, yeah - I've had some bad experiences another pack but you know what? I tried to help FIX those experiences by contributing my experience to them and personally trying to find out workarounds or reasons for this experience. If the experience was a turnoff completely, I just reinstalled and not used it - that simple. I didn't rant, rave, tell poeple it's the devil, and other nonsense. I knew the risks and I willing ran those risks and quite frankly, I haven't been dissappointed.

Quite simple really luke 1) Goto Start -> Run -> type 'regedit' -> ok 2) Navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes' 3) Goto File -> 'Export Registry File' -> Save under the name you choose *4) Open up this registry file in notepad to strip out everything but your scheme. * = Example Result Shown below: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance\Schemes] "My_Theme"=hex:04,00,00,00,1f,30,8c,d3,01,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,0d,00,00,00,12,00,\ 00,00,12,00,00,00,f4,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,bc,02,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,41,72,69,61,6c,00,17,01,50,13,78,45,00,00,c8,45,\ 00,00,48,7e,00,00,30,7e,63,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,0f,00,00,00,0f,00,00,00,f7,\ ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,4d,53,20,53,61,6e,73,20,53,65,72,69,66,00,c8,45,00,00,48,7e,00,00,30,\ 7e,63,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,12,00,00,00,12,00,00,00,f5,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,4d,53,20,53,61,\ 6e,73,20,53,65,72,69,66,00,c8,45,00,00,48,7e,00,00,30,7e,63,00,00,00,00,00,\ 01,00,f5,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,4d,53,20,53,61,6e,73,20,53,65,72,69,66,00,c8,45,00,00,48,7e,\ 00,00,30,7e,63,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,f5,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,4d,53,20,53,61,6e,73,20,53,65,\ 72,69,66,00,c8,45,00,00,48,7e,00,00,30,7e,63,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,f8,ff,ff,\ ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 4d,53,20,53,61,6e,73,20,53,65,72,69,66,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,e1,e0,d2,02,42,00,00,00,80,00,00,00,8d,89,61,00,c2,bf,\ a5,02,ff,ff,ff,02,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,02,e1,e0,d2,02,c2,bf,a5,\ 02,c2,bf,a5,02,e1,e0,d2,02,8d,89,61,02,ff,ff,ff,02,c2,bf,a5,02,8d,89,61,02,\ 8d,89,61,02,00,00,00,02,e1,e0,d2,02,e1,e0,d2,02,00,00,00,02,c2,bf,a5,02,80,\ 00,00,02,e1,e0,d2,02,ba,b7,9a,00,00,00,ff,00,80,00,00,00,8d,89,61,00
