  1. Same issue as with Alpha3+ here, running winamp.exe for instance causes a chain of GDI.exe crashes in many other applications and this is a fresh reinstall as well. Seems like they're all linked in some way... am I really the only one having so much difficulty with the GDIex? -.-' Watson logs included. I tried Beta1 with youtube using the links provided by 'mcv93us' and didn't have the 60% load issue at all. However, upon checking the 'about' page for my shockwave version, IEXPLORE suddenly crashed in GDI.EXE and affected apps had the same issue thereafter (winoldap,winamp,notepad,psp7,trillian,etc). 2. You can get some of the other features by unpacking the RP7 installer and manually installing certain sections. However, many of them are interlinked and will likely cause issues with RP9 directly. I'll start splitting it apart and see what can be done with some of the extra's still remaining as you've got me wondering as well. So far, from what I recall, a different version of user32.dll (the rp7 one) is required to use the shutdown.exe in tandem with the shutdown option in the menu which I believe was not compatible at all with RP9. However, the HI-Res startup logo should work without hitches.
  3. Some programs that are multi-windows test for the existance of certain api's to determine windows version instead. If certain WinNT api's exist, it assumes it isn't win9x and uses the other codepath.
  4. Firefox 3 if I'm correct requires at least KernelEx v3.6a. Additionally, not sure if the fix above to run the setup in compatibility mode even applies for the 3.x series without setting the compatibility manually. Have you tried using the newer v4.0?
  5. I've seem to have found a slight issue with msimg32.dll in the Kex4 versions. Older nvidia drivers (56.64 and under) seem to have issues with it in 32-bit colour mode. So far the application for it to be noticable is with Trillian Astra when it comes to skin rendering. http://i27.tinypic.com/mbjrly.jpg It displays normally however when any of these conditions are met: - Set to 16-bit mode - MSIMG32.dll from KEx3.6 is used (but side effect of no transparency in FF3) - Rivatuner is running with the sysmem.dll monitoring plugin enabled - *Drivers greater than 56.64 are used (tested with 82.16/82.69). * = 56.64 and under are needed for proper vertex shading with legacy cards in some applications/games. Discovered with GeForce4 4000mx 128mb w/v45.23 (Omega 9M 1.4523) Additionally, this has no relation to the similar issue present with GDI Heap Expander Beta0 but the rendering symptoms are the same which happens regardless of any of the listed conditions.
  6. Still getting issues with the Alpha, however, the GDI issue immediately from winamp doesn't seem to occur with the beta. However, the issue returned upon open/close of PaintShop Pro 7. Additionally, Beta0 seems to be causing rendering issues with Trillian. Alpha (normal) http://i32.tinypic.com/29x8xnt.jpg Beta0r2 (issues) http://i27.tinypic.com/mbjrly.jpg
  7. Yes, Indeed it does. We had a topic on this long ago as well which you might be interested in. ^.~ Vista RainBar v4 under Windows 98SE http://www.msfn.org/board/Vista-RainBar-V4...ws-t120619.html
  8. Well, that didn't work in my case. Just tried it with '/a /m' and '/m' on its' own. To even get into windows I still had to disable my USB and FDC only to find the drivers weren't taking and would only function in 640x480x16. Any other resolution would cause it to boot with 'error in your hardware configuration' or 'error in display settings'. Starting to think this card won't work whatever I do. =\
  9. For firefox.exe, you may need to set setup.exe to 'winxp' compatibility mode. It's a secondary setup extracted from the main firefox installer. You can do so by adding this to your registry: .. and then try again. As for zonealarm, did it work prior to installing KernelEx? If so, you may want to disable the kernelex extentions for it in the compatibility tab.
  10. Off-Topic: Why must topics like these always devolve into a full out debate that gets it locked in the end? Everytime I see a topic along this line I always dread the worse (basing on past history of the such). On Topic: My opinion is just that but, personally, I use it for a few reasons. 1) Granted, it has its' limitations but to me, it's a feeling of an achievement to continue using it and enjoying it where things still work regardless of [most] requirements. That and it's like being the person running Win3.1 or even DOS in an internet cafe, it's something out of the ordinary. ^_~ 2) It does what I need without having to follow the 'upgrade now' trend every few years down the road. If the need arises that I have to use a certain application in WinXP, *nix, etc; I'll just run it in a VM and that's about it. Why invest in an up to date OS when they don't bring me any real benefits that I'd care about? 3) Easier to trim down and maintain (my opinion, others will understandably disagree). 4) Can install and run off a thumbdrive with the assistance of a bootcd on a laptop that does not natively support booting from USB. Had to resort to such a solution due to poor cooling with my laptop and extensive use causing the hard drives to fail on a yearly basis. I believe the same can be achieved with NT-based systems with using grub4dos(?) via bootcd to load from thumbrive but I haven't tested that theory for myself yet. So far a $7 4gb thumdrive has lasted twice as long as that of a physical hard disk in it and still going strong. 5) Had to think of a 5th reason so... I like to be different from the rest? ^_^
  11. Oye... means I have to scrounge up $20 somehow then. *scratches head* Makes me wonder if the patch (if it works that well) would have solved the nagging issue I'd always had with my (now defunct) 6800ultra 256mb. Whereas it would cause GDI abnormalities with ddraw at random when using console windows or apps (PHP interpreter for example) that called even a hidden console window per run. .. anywho, once I get ahold of a full license I'll report on the results further. I greatly appreciate your time, Dencorso.
  12. Well, the results are in on this. Even using a fresh setup, the card would not boot into windows once the drivers were installed. Only way to get into windows after was to disable literally everything in the bios (FDC controller, USB, etc) before I could get to the desktop in 640x480 @ 16-color. It would then blink out the screen and stop functioning entirely until restart the moment I'd made an attempt to access the display properties. Additionallty, use of the ram limitation patch by RLowe, was minimal use at best. Using it with the /A switch (/m isn't valid), it stabilized the display proprties enough to change resolution. However, upon restart it would make claims of 'an error with the display settings' and still sit in 16 colour / 640x480. Even with the patch installed, enabling any other PC features (FDC/USB/etc) would continue to prevent booting into windows once again. So, from what it seems: 7950gt 256mb is okay according to certain mmbers, in this case, 7950gt 512mb is a no go.
  13. If you were in the web design business, you'd understand their rage. But they should never block anyone. Oh, I do understand their rage as I've made many efforts to support even IE3/NS4 in a couple projects of mine (not easy at times) but alot of it is biased. However, nothing stops them from just dropping support, putting a 'friendly' notice like YT or disclaimer that it won't render properly, and continue on supporting whatever browser they wish. From what I know, the only reason they got such a vendetta (the aformentioned group) was due to a flaw in realplayers' activex control which was exploited by FF11 gold seller sites. An IE was most likely scapegoat in that matter (ala activex).
  14. Not at all, it's a missing dependancy in 'regutils.dll'. Mentioned it long ago actually in the old kernelex thread.
  15. Perhaps this might be of some help: http://www.georgpotthast.de/dossound/ Source: http://www.bttr-software.de/forum/forum_entry.php?id=6510 Since you mentioned AC9x I automatically assumed you were using an AC97 sound chip. Additional links I'd come across from your reference: http://www.computing.net/answers/dos/hard-...-dos/14498.html http://toogam.com/software/archive/drivers...rd/soundcrd.htm (Scroll down to the ac97 audio section)
  16. If at worst, it could be nothing more than an artificial 'block' of browser due to dropping support. Although I'm doubtful youtube would actually ban older browsers from viewing or using the site so, it's likely just a notice that rendering may not be as flawless as it used to be for incompatible browsers. If anything you could always just spoof the version of your IE: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/799/ Had to do that very thing when looking something up for a friend. Apparently some sites have a huge vendetta against IE6/5/*insert older browser+version here* and force you to upgrade if you wish to even use their site. Speaking against 'older browsers' like it's ruining the world and is against all humanity (sounds like a religious cult). Yes, viewing their site with an older broser is indeed commiting murder on companies and other sites alike *facepalm*. Yet spoofing the user agent got through just fine (yet the site is 100% usable and perfectly rendered with even IE5.. -.-). A perfect example would be 'Operation Spring Cleaning': http://windower.net/ie6.html / http://forums.windower.net/topic/14970-ope...bring-down-ie6/
  17. Ah, you'll end up hitting two birds with a single stone with that one. Trillian Astra also has that same issue with flooding font resources when using chat views other than 'simple' (playscript / bubbles). 80+ objects toward the font resource for every line of chat lol! I'm sorry for being a pain in the butt with this being as I'm the only one who seems to be having issues. Feel rather bad since I seem to be the only one who has the most oddball of setups where things just don't want to behave. I'll continue to stick with Alpha2 then till it's caught so it's no biggie (I'm not complaining at all ^.~) *hugs* Enjoy your vacation hun, you definately deserve it for all you do.
  18. I've tried the latest and older drivers. Currently stuck using a Geforce 4000mx (my old workhorse) and tried 81.98, 82.16, and even as far as the 4x.xx,5xx,etc builds hoping one of them worked.. same issue. Currently using 61.76 now though since it's the last driver to support hardware assisted v1.1 Vertex Shading for the g17/18 cores. Just odd it only happened with alpha3+ as it never gave me issues with prior versions (having no issues with alpha2 right now). I'll do a reinstall of windows tomorrow as it's getting rather late and see what the results are afterward.
  19. Oddly enough though, flash 10 seems to exhibit serious resource use/leakage when using certain flash embeds in firefox 3. Trying to get a quote from progressive.com is a prime example (in my case). Can't get through the second page of getting a quote without hitting 0% resources. Granted, this was tried prior to the heap extender.
  20. Ugh, still the same issue here Tihiy. I found the source (in my case) however. Opening winamp then closing (v2.95 or 5.54, regardless of version) even without plugins causes the crash for other applications thereafter. Using notepad or other interaction with certain applications produce the issue. Ignoring the 16-bit (white box) errors with notepad causes a final failure in user.exe. Alpha2 from what it seems does not exhibit this issue. What p***es me off though is I cannot replicate this in my Win98-VM but can on the host. Perhaps a GDI issue related to Nvidia Cards/Drivers? I tried different driver versions and even tried differing versions of GDI.exe and GDI32.dll to no avail.
  21. Tried alpha 3 a few minutes ago. Upon restart and continuing my usual routine (load winamp, load trillian, open up Firefox, etc), I started encountering crashes in basically everything involving a GPF in gdi.exe (unintialized variable). Attached are some of the watson logs from the recorded crashes. watsonlogs_rpXalpha3.rar
  22. Ah! That explains a fair bit. Seeing as songa's post was over a year old - I don't think they would be updating the post anytime soon really. However, knowing the patch is working on addressing vid memory issues in that respect (wasn't immediately evident to me), I'll buy the card anyway. This way, if anything, it will help further the developement of the patch in that regard if there are some issues with its' use. If push comes to shove, I'll just have to bite the bullet and resort to an install of win2k or xp for the time being whenever I need to use the card itself untill things get resolved. I thank you for the clarification in that regard Dencorso and greatly appreciate your time with this. If I manage to win the bid on the card, I'll update the thread as to my findings once I receive it.
  23. Alas, the solution shows for vid cards with 256mb, the other link in the running over 1gb thread, none of the users have gfx cards with anything larger than 256mb (Any that are use the bear windows driver). RLoew's solution link has a user with yet another 256mb card. Are you sure the ram limitation patch would still apply for use of 512mb gfx cards then? Just looking for clarification is all, don't mean to seem doubtful of your input. Seen very little specifically related to the 512's and I've very little cash to spare so don't want to buy something used then find out I cannot use it.
  24. Sorry to resurrect an old topic but was about to buy this exact card Songa has before last-minute double checking the info here about it. Has anyone yet confirmed the functionality of the 7950gt 512mb under Win98 or should I just not waste my money and not bother? Seems rather impossible to find the 256mb versions nowadays. My 6800ultra 256mb kicked the bucket and seeking a replacement of equivalent (or better) specs in the 7 series due to the 66xx/68xx cards apparently having issues with my mobo/cpu combo (according to the caveats regarding the series in wikipedia and noticed by issues with command use).
  25. Report #1 1. OS: Windows98Se 2. KExVER: v4.0.100 3. Program: RealVNC 4. Desc: WinVNC4 runtime terminates in an unusual way 5. Steps: Have WinVNC4 (RealVnc) startup in Service Mode 6. Worked: Worked fine up until the listed KernelEx version. Also works without KernelEx. Report #2 1. OS: Windows98Se 2. KExVER: v4.0.100 3. Program: Trillian Astra 4. Desc: Incorrect Directory Path locations referenced and no Sound 5. Steps: Install and Run Trillian Astra, data will be saved in trillians own folder rather than %windir%/application data/trillian. Additionally, sounds will not work at all whatsoever. 6. Worked: Requires KernelEx to function, however, it functioned fine during KEx4 Release 1. Further releases (#2 & final) require a modification to CORE.ini to function correctly. Changing 'KERNEL32.GetVersionExW' under '[WINME.names]' to 'Std' and setting Astra to WINME compatibility mode corrects the issue. No idea if this is deliberate nonfunctionality or just a sideffect of KernelEx changes in the code. Just bringing it up as it was also related to a previous version. In other news, this version of KernelEx has fixed the issues involving changing avatar and accepting incoming files in Trillian Astra, which is a big step up and fix to once an ever annoying problem previously.
