  1. Edit in: Sorry, went a wee bit off topic. Tried at a bit of humor\truth\venting at once. ---------------------------------- What a broken record.... I'm sure alot of us remember these spout-offs as being just a repeat of the same old gander of his such as this in this thread. New Games, Where's the support??? DirectX 10 work on win98SE Sounds like a real personal issue really. So we use what we want. Nothing going to stop us. Certainly not him at least. Sure, alot in his mind could have been better off if things were written specifically for NT. Granted, the structure of the OS's are different. However, alot of system calls I'm very sure are similar in practice but just slightly patched to handle the NT architecture for compatibility with the different kernel. From a business viewpoint, it is cheaper to just patch an existing GUI\OS and add onto it rather than start over from scratch. The only thing they did was overhaul the kernel while reusing the same GUI. Just adding on over time to what it's now become. Windows is becoming what it is from a user standpoint. Reason they are making other versions of the NT systems. Such as those strictly for server use to those for workstation\home use. More diverse yes but they can't do it all and make it 'user friendly' all at the same time under a single version. It's a consumers market. Windows 98 exists and we use it because we want to. I find it funny how you only bash 9x and not some other OS. Especially considering that alot of software are also ported over to other O\S's such as Linux and beOS and\or being merged into a single unified program to cover multiple OS's under the same script. So, are programs for other OS's besides '9x' being written affecting YOUR precious performance too just because they don't support NT only? I think not (but if you think they are, go bash them and not us). The NT kernel isn't the only base of an OS my friend. There are other Operating systems out there such as OUR windows 98 (9x). You're not going to make them stop writing programs for those other OS's just as you can't stop porting over to 9x. If you were bill gates, you would be trying to monopolize and kill off every OS out there because of your unexplainable hatred for the 9x kernel. You say how support should have stopped for 9x because you don't like it. If it were your way, there would only be a single version of the OS out which means no more development of it. Where would the advancement be then? There would be none. So, just as there are older versions of windows poeple will use them, soon windows XP will be in the same predicament as 9X is now. Then what would you do? Bash NT kernel users because it is no longer the best despite you now currently protecting it like a newborn child? Windows is Windows and newer is not always better A day in the life of two *system error, contact customer support for rest of title*: Person 1: OMGZ! MS just released the new RG (Really Good) kernel! Person 2: Really? WOW Lets use it. I no longer need this trashy NT kernel. It's not new anymore. Person 1: Yeah, lets go bash those NT and 9x kernel users for still using it! Person 2: It's new so it's so much better than NT. NT is just like so.. last week. It must be garbage. Person 1: Your right, even bill gates said so! *both go off to some older kernel user forum such as 9x and NT to bash them because the world revolves around them.* Gates: Yes my children. Like sheep you too are to be herded to the slaughter. If you only new what Windows RG really was... *evil cackle* *They return from their bashing* Person 1: haha! Those losers. Still using their older wimpy OS's. Person 2: Gawd! My computer seems to run so fast now. It only requires a 13 terrahertz cpu to run it. Person 1: I can do everything on here but it runs a bit slow now. Even though the older systems do the same exact thing and faster. Person 2: yeah my old stuff wont work on it. I need to install a new version. *Person 2 upgrades his old app @ 1mb to a new similar app 1GB+ in size* Person 1: Ah well, it's new so it must be better anyway. I'll blow all my money and then some for something that does the same thing. But yet it has that new shiny RG symbol on it and is version 99.8110 unlike the older version 99.819.3 *both persons get targeted by a new viral* Both: WTH?!~?!? what's happening to my new perfect superior OS? *systems give a warning screen* system: Windows has detected a virus on your system. It will now be repaired. Press OK to begin with repair. Both: *press OK* system: To protect your privacy and important personal information, microsoft will collect your data to back it up. Press 'OK' to continue. Both: *press ok* system: Windows will Low-Level format your harddisk in 3 seconds. When done, microsoft support will contact you for billing information to reinstall windows RG edition. We have your information so don't call us... We'll call you.
  2. The mainboard I'm using right now(EPoX EP-9NDA3J) is still pretty modern despite using the NForce3 chipset. It uses AMD 939 procs up through the ATHLON, FX, and OPTERON series. Only drivers not for win98 for it are the AMD cool-n-Quiet (auto fan speed control) and sata-raid drivers. 1GB LAN for a win98 machine is nice http://www.epox.com.tw/eng/products_content.php?ps=323
  3. Thanks much for the notepad patch. As for METApad, I've found "editor2" more comfortable as a free-as-beer replacement. http://www.netez.com/2xExplorer There is a normal and a UNiCode version of it available.
  4. I'd have to agree with that being due to a slower server response. If you look closer... the button placeholder images are the typical red 'x' like that from IE. *Smells IE in WMP*
  5. God forbid that ever happens (which I hope doesn't) there would still be a way around it. Use an older NT base O/S as a shared gateway. So then all info is transferred between the NT gateway and the rest of the non-nt-hating-networking. Problem with if that rumor ever came to light, microsoft would shaft a large portion of it's customers. Also, to do so would involve redisigning the whole TCP\IP protocol which in turn would cut even XP out of the picture.
  6. It also affects my IE4 & IE 5.00.2614.3500 under windows 98 SE. Thanks for the tip war... took care of that one.
  7. For the last 4+ years, USERNAME temp & PASSWORD: 512 also still work despite their site having been redone twice. Was their old temporary assignment if you claim to have lost your pass. Was initially to be used during the time while you waited for them to get back to you regarding your lost pass.
  8. There are a few copies of neptune floating around. Even tried it myself and am currently running it on another home pc here (200mhz but not win98 so it's irrelevant in this topic) . Functions pretty nicely despite being mostly windows 2k. So it definately made beta but was eventually leaked. There were actually 3 builds leaked. Anyway.. specs for myself are: Primary PC [gaming/coding/the works] AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.4ghz) (tiny OC to 2.5ghz) EPoX EP-9NDA3J Mobo S3 Savage 2000 /mv (64mb) [AKA: Diamond Viper Z-200] 640mb DDR400 (PC3200) SDRAM Yamaha YMF-724 Soundcard (32-bit) [Too attached to ditch this card - beautiful midi emulation & sound] 80gb WD Caviar (E-IDE) [soon to be swapped out for a 180gb WD - SATA] *Dirty install - Ghosted install from my tertiary pc. Only wiped the ENUM branch after ghosting. Secondary PC [Laptop/Webserver] Toshiba Satellite A15-S157 notebook Intel Celeron (2.2ghz) 512mb PC2600 DDR SDRAM 40gb Toshiba HD *clean install <2 years ago Tertiary PC [Fileserver/Old Primary PC] AMD K6-II @ 500mhz EPoX EP-MVP3C Mobo S3 Savage 3D /MV (7.5mb) 448mb PC100 SDRAM Soundblaster Soundcard - ISA (32-bit) [used to be used together with the Yamaha card above] 8.4gb Fujitsu HD (E-IDE) 160gb Maxtor (E-IDE) hard disk *Clean install >5 years ago All running purely windows 98SE. I could use any OS I want but win98se is my prime choice and always will be for my personal use. Also, yes.. there is a bit of a trend going between my Primary and Tertiary PC's as far as Motherboard, CPU, and GFX is concerned. Alsways relied on AMD, EPoX and S3.
  9. Dumb question but isn't there "scanreg" available in dos mode with windows95? Been quite some time since I've last used it. If so try using it. It would let you restore a previous backup through dos. To have windows rebuild the registry (keeps setting but restores some missing keys) rather than restore a backup you can try "scanreg /fix" at the command line.
  10. Actually, I've seen several versions of them on the net but there are add-on drivers for windows98 to work with NTFS. Some of the drivers are read-only with such formats but the others are both read & write for NTFS using windows98.
  11. For the time being, whenever you get that error, go to your start menu >> run and type "shutdown -a" to stop the timer. Also, you can optionally go into your services through administration tools. Look for remote procedure call and open it. Look for where it says along the lines of '1st failure - shutdown computer' and change to 'restart service' on all 3 instances. If it fails it will restart the service instead but at a cost of losing some drag-drop functions when working with directories after a failure. However, it will buy you time to find out what is wrong and take care of it. edit: erm... reread and noticed you said win 2k3. DOH! I'm sure the method I stated still stands for that... i hope.

    New Games

Where there is a will there is a way. There will always be poeple running windows 98 on all systems. If it isn't possible it will be made possible by the large community of windows 98 users. Games even if written only for '2k/xp' will eventually be modified to work on win9x very shortly after it's release providing the fanbase of both the game(s) and the unsupported os (supposedly) have a big enough strive to do it. That strive is very often there in excessive quantities. The MSN forums here and the development of windows98 and linux for example are all great examples of that. Heh, and yet windows NT at first took 5 service packs (or more?) to finally become stable and usable. Same thing with windows 9x... it wasn't a charmer first time around untill it become more mature. Oh sure, you can call it fiercely infererior (POS-ish) all you want but technology advances at the pace of the almighty dollar. Sure, it might be inferior to a [limited] extent but it can do pretty much all the same things the new O/S's can do. As others have already stated before me, when well configured and correctly patched... a win98 system can run as stable and efficiently as an NT based system. Poeple will use what they want on what they want. It is not your choice to say who will use what but rather that of the users themselves and the company driving the technology. If they make all the best right away, the company will end up losing out on the almighty dollar. Reason as you've noticed a slow progression of windows which is basically just the core built on even more. It costs more to build a whole new core than it does to build on it... alot more. Reason there is only 2 windows cores at the moment... DOS and NT. Each were built intially for specific reasons but have since been expanded upon. Reason most games for example are licensed... they are licensing a premade graphic engine (no, im not saying they all use the same one obviously) to build upon due to the time and cost. Personally, I've run windows 98se on all of my systems without a single complaint and fully satisfied. I run it on my webserver, file server, and main pc with zero problems. Oh, and since I absolutely know it will annoy you to every extent link... This desktop is running windows 98SE with the unofficial Service pack. AMD ATHLON 64 4000+ (San diego core) with 1gb pc3200 DDR Ram and 160gb maxtor. It runs perfectly stable and very responsive. Current uptime is 34 days through nonstop abuse and continues ticking like it was freshly booted. Every game I have thrown at it works like a charm and then some. Like said.. if there is a will there is a way and my will keeps win98 going strong on my end of things. If you are so concerned about the future of performance and stability... go bash another group of poeple. You're bringing a knife into a gunfight bashing 9x users in a 9x forum. It would be like a (insert non windows os here) user walking into microsofts building and calling them a POS. Hey, this is a win9x forum afterall
  13. Tricky, he was talking about 'syl' meaning "seven years later" edition. Most likely the unattended cd project in another thread
  14. That depends on your level of paranoia. A firewall is a great thing to use as it can restrict most 'hacker'\'viral' attempts to gain access to your pc. However, it can slow down your connecton once in a while due to that it has to filter through the packets as they come through. Just you might have to disable it when playing some games online because it could restrict you from connecting to some servers or hosting a server. Firewalls - It's like asking yourself if you'd like to leave your front door locked or unlocked in a crime-infested town.
  15. Well, then perhaps we should support them with a few gallons of coffee every hour or so and crack the whip a few times to get that underway. I'm sure once Directx10 comes out and ages a bit the demand for DX10 support will be quite overwhelming.
  16. What I can figure is that it could be due to management of the whole installation itself or size restrictions. True, it would be a dream-come-true if they did compile every last one of their drivers into a single package but you can only expect so much... sadly. Perhaps they are merging some of the drivers together though? I myself have used the intel chipset as well in my toshiba laptop when I had removed xp from it and installed 98se. I did notice the passing out of older chipsets as the one i had they just ocassionally renamed (slightly) and updated with the pack regardless. Also had to manually install a couple from the set such as the USB2 support. Best that could be done is if someone extracted the drivers from most of intels packs and passed it off as a general intel-chipset driver archive. Only was I can see having the legacy chipsets still in it.
  17. Could the DX emulators probably juggle both versions around? It would be extra work of course but I'm sure they would find some way to add a user-selectable toggle between dx9 and dx10+ for each game.
  18. From what I've been reading, I would not even suggest DirectX10. Microsoft will be cutting backwards compatibility with Directx-10. Meaning it will only support Directx10 apps. They might add some sort of legacy directx emulation but that would end up being slower than a non-10 version being used. Here are a few articles that support that. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25902 http://news.softpedia.com/news/DirectX-10-...ends-7762.shtml
  19. Perhaps try this... the INF update utility for the 810 chipset was last updated in 2004. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...ID=178〈=eng Scroll down the list to find the EXE form of the the installer. Intel has a habit of not organzing the software by date very often. However, higher versions don't always constitute to the drivers for a specific chipset being updated. Have you tried using the ZIP for of the inf update utility then running the command strings on the installer to extract the actual INF's and assiciated drivers? Then attempting manual update of each piece of hardware? Had to do that with my 850/855 chipset in my laptop a while back even to get the USB2 dirver installed. Could try http://www.drivermagic.com to find all your supported drivers for your hardware and your chipset. They have quite a few older versions archived on there. Also, could try http://www.driverguide.com (I used this site quite often in the past) Also as a last resort, try http://driverchina.com/ . The site is in chinese but if you can find your way around... you should find all the old versions you seek. I swear, this is the only site that still had some driver sets that nobody has anymore. Best example would be most of the tweaked driversets for my s3 savage 2000 vid card.
  20. Now if *only* Windows 98 ever did become open source. Just microsoft unfortunately wouldn't allow that to happen which quite a pity. Could have ended up with win98 becoming the next Open Source system like linux. ... Well, for now we can all dream
  21. I'd second the comments on just using stable apps and having the cache well tuned. My win98 system runs as a gaming, programming environment (Web Based), and http/ftp server. ... I've hit a good 23 days uptime on my w98 system so farof constant abuse.
  22. From what it seems, the overall structure of a windows XP driver's INF file is different from that for a windows 98\me system. Therefor it will likely not be processed correctly. Had to redo an inf and driverfile set for getting my softmodem supported in windows 98. This Toshiba Satellite [A15-S157] Laptop of mine is only supported for use with Windows XP. Ended up getting a Win98 driver set from Lucent and meshing it with the XP drivers for my modem to get it working correctly. Ended up with a rewrite of the inf. Best that can be done is track down the actual manufacturers of each piece of hardware to get the needed drivers. Then go to the manufacturers website directly. Intel seems to be very keen on providing 9x drivers for their chipsets so there is definately luck using intel hardware. I've been through the *scouring the web for compatible drivers* spiel once before. It is not something to sneeze at while drinking a latte.
  23. Seems I'm not the only one who has had troubles with ADS' Drive kits. It seems to somehow partially disconnect itself during use and/or non-use after 5-10 minutes. It still shows connected and fine but accessing it after that time will indicate 'drive not ready'. If the drive was in use at the moment owever... the comp locks up for a time while it realizes it can no longer write to the drive. Only way to rectify the problem is to disconnect the enclosure from the comp then reconnect. I have tried multiple new harddisks along with both ADS hard drive enclosures and ADS ext. drive enclosures. Same problems so... it seems to be the ADS driver problems or hardware faults on ADS' part and not the fault of the hard disks. I still have these enclosures but moved on to using the enclosures by compusa. So far I've had zero problems with them instead.
