Vista Ultimate, Remote Assistance, D-Link Router...won't work!
fizban2 replied to caintgetrite's topic in Windows Vista
regardless of which article the technician told him to look at, most people aren't going to lie about calling tech support, reading the article is pretty much covers the issues he is seeing (remote assitance and firewall connectivity) going to close this out as it won't be fixed until SP1 -
if the mobile device is going to sync over the internet though, you will need a cert that is given by a third party that is trusted on the internet (versign go daddy etc) if it is going to be only devices snysing in the office you shouldn't need any certs to snyc a pda with exchange Step-by-Step Guide to Deploying Windows Mobile-based Devices with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2

you seeing any errors in the even log, or can you post one of the mini dumps from the reboot?
-
well know you have said you got it all connected, the question now is how is the networks setup at both sites? o they use differnet IP ranges and dhcp servers? is the router inbetween routing those different ranges correctly?
-
does the router not support L2TP? that would be a much more sercure connection especially if it is a site to site connection,
-
DNS shouldn't play apart till i get an actual IP address, all the DNS related information is populated by the DHCP server. talked with some other IT folk and it seems to be the case on their networks as well, semi disturbing that it would take that long to aquire an IP address

WillWipeDisk specifies whether to erase all partitions on the hard disk before adding additional configurations to the disk. WillWipeDisk is blocked in Windows PE if any of the following conditions are true: Windows Setup binaries are running from the disk in question. The currently running operating system is booted (but not RAM-drive booted) from the disk in question. There is an active page file on the disk in question. <DiskConfiguration> <WillShowUI>OnError</WillShowUI> <Disk> <DiskID>0</DiskID> <WillWipeDisk>true</WillWipeDisk> <CreatePartitions> <CreatePartition> <!-- Create primary partition, 20 GB --> <Order>1</Order> <Type>Primary</Type> <Size>20000</Size> </CreatePartition> <!-- Create extended partition and fill the rest of the hard disk --> <CreatePartition> <Order>2</Order> <Type>Extended</Type> <Extend>true</Extend> </CreatePartition> <!-- Create logical partition within the extended partition, 6 GB --> <CreatePartition> <Order>3</Order> <Type>Logical</Type> <Size>6000</Size> </CreatePartition> </CreatePartitions> </Disk> </DiskConfiguration> Download the WAIK documentation from MS website for more information

sadly that isn't an option, with over 9000 desktops in several buildings (nevermind the international sites) that would be a nightmare. ruralpctech thanks for the stats, we are running a full W2k3 domain in 2003 native mode, DHCP and DNS are hosted on the same machine (shudder i have told them to switch them but they are cheap sometimes) this is fairly standard across all buildings with 5 laptops of the same make and install, scares me to think that it should be like that, building a couple new machines and i will test it again tommorow. anyone else willing to check their times?

1. the WIm image can be just the OS or it can also have applications installed or stage in the WIM, that part is up to you. 2. N/A 3. BDD 2007 use this to build your WIMs, all the information you need it there, be warned there is alot to learn to get it working correctly
-
if you are using WDS you can use the boot.wim. to deploy Xp in a native WDS installation you will need to get XP setup in a WIM file. if you are using mixed mode you can use the same RIS method that worked prior for XP
-
correct, set it up to do a complete memory dump, the dump file will be as big as your physical memory, PM me when you have complete dump
-
are you able to get into windows long enough to change the type of dump to full? that would be more helpful to us in resolving your issue

trying to find some anwsers to some questions that have been brought up at work lately, finding on several laptops that from boot-up, it takes the DHCP server almost 20 seconds to lease out an IP address to a given machine, from that poin the machine is not pingable unitl 80 seconds into the boot and finally is able to find the domain. has anyone else done a network trace of a XP boot on their domain lately, would anyone want to . just seems to me that from boot till 80 seconds to finally begin authentication with the domain and actually respond to network resources is a long time

vista and 2008 drivers will be different espeically 64bit as driver signing is taking place, you would have to wait for 2008 compat drivers that are signed for it

do you have any errors in your event viewer? -
download and install the newest version on Deamon tools that supports Vista, shoudl allow you to upgrade then. if not try downloading the SPTD driver unistall tool from there webpage, it is most likely not deamon tools itselft that is incompatible with Vista and the driver used for emulation of virtual drives that the SPTD uses
