  1. You can create a security template before you change the registry permissions -> change the permissions-> Perform the upgrade -> Import the security template. No I have not ran into this before though.. I just know that the security templates hold permissions for drives and regsitry setting and much more.
  2. Group policies allow you to remotely configure thousands of machines with a flip of a switch basically. You can change/modify the settings without having to deploy a new profile. Group policy helps secure desktops/servers on the Computer level and the User level. Honestly.. Group Policies and profiles are completely different entities of their own. Instead of going way indepth about what can be done with Group Policies I would suggest doing some reading.. Basically. Group policies allow you to control workstations in an Enterprise enviroment. A profile is a user object that can be edited. I honestly cant even begin to get into the differences. I would suggest doing some reading on Group Policies..
  3. Boot to like bartPE or the recovery console and delete the file.. you can also try to use a program called Killbox to remove it on startup It is a virus.. it is a trojan
  4. yeah it works with both straight through and crossover... I just used the one that came with the modem....
  5. it looks like the setup depends on sufficient COM (Component Object Model) with sufficient permissions. InstallShield does not have sufficient permissions. Either make sure you are logged in as a user with valid permissions or Make sure the COM and DCOM services are started.
  6. any errors in the event log as to what is locking up are you doing anything like deleting pagefile on exit or any setting like that?
  7. It sounds to me like your router for your internet connection is the problem. Most P2P programs require ports to be forwarded to a pc. if they are forwarded to your brothers then yours wont connect.. Check your router and see if the ports are forwarded...
  8. I am not 100% but isnt the volume lable stored on the hard disk and not in the registry. Example: My usb drive has the same lable no matter what computer I stick it in.
  9. how was it determined that Windows was blocking it. also aren't those connections NOT between you and your brothers computer but between you and the rest of the P2P network? Can your brother connect but you can't or the other way around or can you both not connect? Are you running any firewalls?
  10. You can convert Dynamic back to basic easily within microsoft management console AS LONG AS the partition you are trying to convert is NOT a system partition. Then yes.. data loss will occure If it is not a system partition then you shouldnt lose your data. EDIT: I just tested my theory.. You will have to move your data off of those disks or your data WILL be lost. You have to delete the Dynamic Volume you created which will remove all partitions on the Dynamic volume. This is if you use Microsoft Disk Manager What I was thinking of was when I used this program: http://www.partition-manager.com/comparison.htm You want professional edition... This was what I used. On my virtural machine i attempted the DISKPROBE.exe method and this did work.. http://faq.arstechnica.com/link.php?i=1806 I am not taking responsibility for lost information for this one though
  11. I kinda thought the same thing so i checked mine and sure enough it was a crossover.. i think it depends on the hardware and what type of modem you have..
  12. Please be a little more specific.. what ports are being blocked and where are they blocked how did you open them what are you trying to do with these ports
  13. You should be able to just right click where it says "Disk2" and say convert to basic disk
  14. Are you getting any specific errors in your event log? Is your TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service running?
  15. If the VPN works from the LAN then it does work on Win2k3SP1 and with this being the case then it sounds like a firewall issue More specifically.. when you say it doesnt work.. what do you mean.. can you connect but not see anything on the network.. can you not connect at all. Please give more information
  16. DNS didnt become part of Active Directory until Win2k so yes that would only count for 2000/2003 and NOT NT4 FYI: you can disable dynamic registration of DHCP clients into DNS on 2000/2003
  17. As that may work for no security, it will not help for accessing files between networked computers. RogueSpear's is right, you will have problems authenticating if you dont have similar PRESENT passwords
  18. For PC to Switch, you want to use a straight-through cable..(depending on the switch, it can detect the cable type and the node on the other side and adjust accordingly) but we wont talk about that Router to modem -> crossover PC to switch -> straight through
  19. Basically dynamic disks are used for Software like RAID systems. As long as it is not a system partition just convert it back to a basic disk
  20. Yes.. only certian nics are supported.. but most of the common one are supported You CANNOT deploy software using RIS to already built machines Should be no problem with XP Home
  21. First show hidden files and folders Open regedit and select the HKEY_Users folder click file -> load hive-> Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Default Users\ntuser.dat give it a name and hit ok edit what you wish then hit file unload hive
  22. That is why I said to turn off your software firewall. He is being protected by his router
  23. Specifically what GPO... what group policy setting states that you cant copy INF Files.. Please be a little more specific Thanks:)
  24. Here are a few things you can do to get you up and running Open your routers web interface management: Configure the following settings for the lan IP Address 10.0.0.1 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DNS Server (ISP Provided) IP Address 10.0.0.2 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS Server (ISP Provided) IP Address 10.0.0.3 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS Server (ISP Provided) On both computers do the following: Right click on my computer and go to network identification Make sure under computer name.. the names of both machines are unique.. ie: PC1 and PC2 Under Workgroup... this needs to be the same ie: HOME Right click on My computer and select manage Go to Local Users and Groups -> Users Make IDENTICAL user account(you can leave all the defaults in there. IE: PC1: Username: John ; Password: doe PC2: Username: John ; Password: doe Disable the Guest account On windows XP open windows explorer and click on tools-> folder options-> View and UNCHECK where it says use simple file shareing.. Make sure you have any software firewalls turned OFF (this means Windows Firewall also. Restart the computers when they come back up log on to the computer with the username John and password doe you should be able to successfully access the other PC now
  25. If you have hardware that supports PXE then you dont even need a CD with RIS.. Otherwise.. if you really wanted to use a CD then you could use either Windows PE or BartPE and have it load in installation script. Useful Link: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/desktopde...nt/default.mspx
