  1. Were you getting a specific message in event viewer or a message when you tried to start the service?
  2. Are the original profiles roaming or local? If roaming, when you log on to just a roaming profile, do the Group Policy's apply? When you log off the computer, does the cached profile stay on the computer or does it get deleted?. Windows 2000 GP or 2003 GP Try logging on to the machine with a roaming user profile, run gpupdate /force then log off, change the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man.... delete local cached copy of profile, log back on as user. does the GP apply or still no beans?
  3. I don't know that product very well so I wouldnt know where to tell you to start. However, one thing common between routers is that they don't forward broadcasts.. meaning the systems on the other side of the router will not show up in my network places because the computers on the other side will never receive their lan announcements. Sorry this is not specific in terms of fixing but maybe this will help lead you to an answer.....
  4. if you just go through the process and validate your copy of windows.... it wont ask you do to it anymore and it will let you proceede right to the download... and yeah.. in a few more months here you wont be able to go around it... might as well do it and get it over with
  5. Sasser was a LOW risk on 2003 however variants of the sasser has had a greater effect on 2003 server. Boot to safe mode and run a full virus scan.
  6. This could be a number of things.. most of which you just need to give it some time. If you really wanted to get rid of it immediately you could speed it up by removing any cached entries in dns.... removing the lease in DHCP for the computers in the old domain, restart the Windows Browser service on the computer you are on..... ipconfig /flushdns. Remove the entry in WINS Most of these things will eventually work themselves out without user intervention though. If it is still there a day from now then I would double check what you did because there might be another computer on that domain that you didnt remove and is keeping that entry in there.
  7. I almost forgot...... go to the command prompt and type in sfc.exe /scannow you will need your installation cd as it will ask for it. This should take care of any other damaged dll files
  8. http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/download...nload0UEmPHXGfT http://www.dll-files.com/ They haven't let me down yet....
  9. Using group policy though you can also hide all drives in My Computer and you can also disable the ability to browse to a path on the hard drive... or even on the network.. So even if they could get to windows Explorer... they wouldnt get much farther. start -> run -> gpedit.msc -> User Configuration -> Administrative Templates-> Windows Componenst -> Windows Explorer or User Configuration -> Administrative Templates-> Windows Componenst -> Start Menu and TaskBar Just Start Playing with those.. BE AWARE THOUGH.... if you change this locally (using gpedit.msc) this will affect the administrator also. I recommend doing this through a domain policy.
  10. Add or remove programs -> Add or remove components -> E-mail services select both pop3 server and web administration... if you dont do web administration then you can just use iis control panel
  11. you can render it totally useless by removing folders and going through group policy (domain) or gpedit.msc localy. (cant do it for home or 98) The start button will still show up but you can remove all items. The only way I can think of that you can completely render it useless it to either hack the explorer shell or write an app to load instead of explorer.exe You could try to use like say LiteStep(does that work on 2k?) and customize your own. ....
  12. Adding %SystemRoot%\system32 to the EV "PATH" did the trick.. thanks alot guys
  13. When you go to their house to clean up their computers, make them restricted user accounts and tell them to use those and if they need to install an application to log on to the administrators account. A person in the "Users" group or Limited account (XP Home) will have one hell of a time trying to install spyware that way... and this way it is quick and simple and easy to explain to them. Plus you can show them the cute pictuers you can make for them and make it sound like it is an advantage to have this account. As far as windows 98, Firefox is gonna be your best bet or tell them to upgrade to XP or 2k then create limited user accounts
  14. I cant really pinpoint exactaly when this happened, I have been putting up with it for a while now but it has started to become a pain. You know when you go to start->run->cmd then you are presented with c:\Documents and Settings\%username%...... under normal working conditions I would be able to just type in ipconfig and see my ip configuration or ping google.com and see my responses. but now if i want to use these commands i need to navigate to the folder (c:\windows\system32) then type in ping google.com otherwise i get the 'ping' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Does anybody know how to fix this. I have searched online but have not found any good results..... I am constantly doing troubleshooting with my laptop and i need quick access to the command prompt but i cannot keep going to the directory where the exe is located to do my work. (well i can I just dont want to )
  15. Windows media services 9 should work just fine. VideoLan works good but doesnt quite have the options and security that WMS does. As far as getting your stream to the other subnet, I have a few questions. For starters what type of publishing point are you creating. Is it a flat file, or a live broadcast. Secondly, how are you distributing your content. Are you using unicast or multicast. Routers, by default, do not forward multicast advertisements meaning unless you configure multicast on your routers (should be easy on one router) your content wont get over to the other side. How are the users linking to this published content, through a link in favorites or a url and is this location "pingable" from the other subnet Is NAT enabled between the 2 subnet? if so a static NAT entry will need to be added. That is all I can think of off hand. I have experience using Windows media services at a few of my clients and we have done it over many different subnets simultaneously. I used Unicast distribution because it doesnt require any configuration on network devices or network clients, then I create the advertisemnt using the wizard and copy the information into my own template (cause theirs is lame). Let me know if any of this works for you.
  16. try starting in safe mode and see if that works... if all else fails, reinstall internet explorer.
  17. Added this registry setting to my servers at work. Use a registry editing tool to navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters Insert a value with the following details: Data Type: DWORD Value Name: AutoShareServer (if using a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 Server variant) AutoShareWks (if using Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional) Value: 0 Restart the computer for the changes to take effect However if you are the only computer connected to the internet in your house and have no internal network then i would remove file and print sharing and client for microsoft networks. This will allow only tcp/ip connections and all windows file sharing functions all together will be turned off.
  18. Download and extract the version service pack you have installed (if you dont have the latest I recommend you do so) and copy appwiz.cpl and Mshtml.dll from the extracted service pack folder and copy them to the c:\windows\system32 or c:\winnt\system32. then re-registering appwiz.cpl and Mshtml.dll if this doesnt work.. uninstall internet explorer, restart the computer and re-install it. This should fix the problem.
  19. Hello all, hopefully I can help on the forums and give some good advice to someone. I bring some but not alot of experience from the professional IT field and i am more than just a home user. Hopefully I can help make this forum even better than it already is. --------------------- ~Chilifrei CCNA, MCSE
  20. They're all gonna be flawed anyways. Firefox has already had its share of exploits. IE7 till the end...
  21. Windows Load balancing is a little touchy. I run the same on my network however I do not have this problem..... any more. probably a misconfiguration somewhere. One thing I suggest is remove both from the LB cluster, restart both machines. Configure both servers from a remote console (Non-TS Console) using NLB Manager and restart both machines. Watch the logs and see what it says. Keep the NLB Manager up on the remote console and see if errors occure. ~Chilifrei
  22. What a funny error, where I work we have this crappy software that is developed for us and we get that error. I can recreate the error through the software though. Basically I have linked it to a crappy program and MSDE 2000. The first thing I would do is run msconfig and clear the startup programs, I have a feeling it is msde though.
