  1. @roytam1 Thanks for the new updated version today. By the way, I was able to extract today's release using WinRar, so 7z may no longer be necessary.
  2. @heinoganda Thanks for catching my link error. I'm updating the links in that reply above (since I can't delete the post): Version 4.4.304 was digitally signed by Microsoft on October 24, 2013. Thus you'll need to use the archived direct download link from November 28, 2013 (it still links to 4.4.304). Also, the files on my FTP were always the correct 4.4.304, so you can always use those! (In my post above I accidentally linked to a newer archived link which happens to link to the "unarchived" 4.10.209.0, which as you correctly noted does not run on XP.) The correct link for the x86 32 bit version is https://web.archive.org/web/20131121010912/http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/ENUS/x86/MSEInstall.exe
  3. @ThomasW You bring up interesting points. As far as your ThinkPad goes, it's one thing to use a computer for only the software it was designed for, and quite another to use it for software still being released today. The T60 will run quite well for software designed in that era, circa 2006-2007. However, for optimal performance you'll want a newer machine for modern software. My recommendations are 1) to run a modern machine with XP drivers available (this is getting more difficult to do as time goes by, but most machines up to 2014 should still have drivers available, or 2) use an XP virtual machine. I'm currently using a laptop with XP, as I like to be able to take it with me wherever I am. It shipped with 3GB RAM in 2011, and 4GB seems like overkill since 32 bit has its limits anyway. I installed an SSD and this makes a huge difference. If you aren't using an SSD, perhaps you should consider it. I believe the T6x are the first with SATA, and SSDs are extremely cheap now. Even the entry level CS900 makes a marked improvement over HDD, and it's only about $50.
  4. Skype (now owned by Microsoft) is officially still supported on Windows XP SP3 with Internet Explorer 8. Apparently Microsoft still has a soft spot for XP. https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/ then click on System Requirements https://support.skype.com/en/faq/fa10328/what-are-the-system-requirements-for-skype
  5. @heinoganda @AstroSkipper It appears that Windows Update shows the Security Essentials being available, but the links shown in the "details" box are not working. You also will not find those links in the Internet Archive. I have always recommended that people download the programs using the original source page Internet Archive (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download): (EDITED) The correct link for the x86 32 bit version is https://web.archive.org/web/20131121010912/http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/ENUS/x86/MSEInstall.exe I have also had them archived on my FTP: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/mse/
  6. I'm running 52.6.0 on XP with no slowdowns. Of course, this is also on a quad core i3 with 3GB RAM and an SSD.
  7. @Dave-H Java JRE 8 Update 152 is actually the newest. It appears that 151 and 152 were released on the same day, and that 152 supersedes 151. http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/jre-8u152-windows-i586.exe or from Duke University: http://faucet.aas.duke.edu/pub/pc/bigfix/patches/java/jre-8u152-windows-i586.exe For some reason the Java archive requires an account, so I would use the above links if you don't have an account.
  8. Hi @Dave-H, I posted about this problem early on Wednesday morning, please see my post and the related comments.
  9. @dencorso Although I got the notification, the installer does not actually run! When double-clicking, nothing happens. Either there is an compatibility issue with the installer, or as of update 161 Java 8 is no longer compatible with Windows XP. If you already uninstalled the previous version (Java JRE 8 Update 152) and need to restore it, it's on my FTP here: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/jre-8u152-windows-i586.exe
  10. Java JRE 8 Update 161 was released today, January 16, 2018. I just got the automatic update notification on my Windows XP SP3 system:
  11. Just an update: Audacity 2.2.1 has been released. https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ To clarify, Windows XP is supported as long as Service Pack 3 is installed and there is a SSE2 or later processor. Otherwise, 2.0.6 is the last supported version on Windows XP. More info: http://www.audacityteam.org/download/legacy-windows/ and http://www.audacityteam.org/download/legacy-windows/#sysreq
  12. @jbclem I tested and installed the MemoryFox Next add-on from within Firefox, with no issues. Is there a reason you need the Pro version, they both appear to do the same thing. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/memory-fox-next/
  13. @dencorso In that case, I would just use the Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP. Clicking on the program produces a visible "Remove" button.
  14. I wanted to post an update here. Chrome 49 no longer seems to pull a WideVine update from the server. It is now necessary to use my link and manually extract the files to C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Fox\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\WidevineCDM where you must replace Stephen Fox with your own computer's user name. I am not sure why it is not pulling the update, the problem may be temporary or permanent.
  15. Hi everyone, I've been pretty busy lately but wanted to pop in. The latest version of VLC Media Player 2.2.8 works on XP (tested with SP3). It was released December 5, 2017 and contains a security update: https://www.videolan.org/news.html#news-2017-12-05
  16. AOL Instant Messenger will cease to function on December 15, 2017. This statement was emailed to AIM users on October 6, 2017.
  17. @~♥Aiko♥Chan♥~ A modern Office utility? It's been years since Win9x was supported. I have Office 97 to offer, but in my opinion Office 2000 and Office XP are still very useful with the File Format Converter/Compatibility Pack, and so are too new to offer without getting in trouble with Microsoft. They aren't really obsolete, while Office 95 and Office 97 pretty much are. In October 2003, the Internet Archive (WayBack Machine) was granted exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to protect at-risk software that is obsolete: http://archive.org/about/dmca.php and https://www.copyright.gov/1201/docs/librarian_statement_01.html At this point Office 97 is 20 years old (it was released November 1996), and I have never gotten any copyright complaints. I have a copyright disclaimer on my site, and I don't think Microsoft really cares at this point. My intention is to preserve rare and/or irreplaceable software, along the same lines as the WayBack Machine. If and when they complain, I'll take it down. Hopefully that day will never come.
  18. @dencorso You might still be in to something with NT 5.x. I assume that New Moon still is compatible with Server 2003 R2 since it shares code with XP. Of course there's no guarantee New Moon works with vanilla Server 2003. Perhaps New Moon XP/03? Pronounced "XP-oh-three"? Or, "XP-oh-three-are-2"? It kind of rolls off the tongue.
  19. @dencorso Not bad, but it might confuse Windows 2000 users. NT 5 implies being compatible also with Windows 2000, which it is not.
  20. NewMoonXP? It emphasizes New Moon's mission to serve XP, just as TenFourFox serves Mac OS X 10.4 users.
  21. @roytam1 Thank you for your dedication in updating Pale Moon on a regular basis. Is today's build the last to be called "Pale Moon"? @roytam1 I ran the Basilisk test for the first time, and received an error in module MSCTFIME.IME (Microsoft Text Frame Work Service IME). I am not sure of the cause at this time, but it happens when I attempt inputting text into the address bar. I am able to reproduce the error every time.
  22. @heinoganda The link in the first post of this thread (http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe) no longer works. I found the one available on XP's last official day of support, April 8, 2014: https://web.archive.org/web/20140408215209/http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe
  23. @Nomen @winxpi I tried the "www.youtube.com/v/(video-id)" trick. I tested with Pale Moon 3.6.32 on Windows 2000, and a Taylor Swift video on YouTube's page, and was greeted with the following:
  24. @Wunderbar98 There are printers available on eBay, still brand new, that are compatible with Windows 98. Such as this all in one HP PSC 1410: https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-PSC-1410-All-In-One-Color-InkJet-Printer-18PPM-Black-Q7290A/191870798687?epid=1319717075&hash=item2cac640b5f:g:fK0AAOSwT6pV6ae5 I did a search for "printer windows 98": https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=printer+windows+98
  25. @assenort @PROBLEMCHYLD According to this archived link, 5.0.5 "requires minimum Windows 98", but @assenort got it working on Windows 95 C. You could probably try 5.1 to see if that works, since the requirements are the same. It's a minor point release and may still work. I'm not at a Win95 C machine ATM to test). The page: https://web.archive.org/web/20031002033025/http://www.divx.com:80/divx/ The free download link for the Standard DivX 5.1 Codec: https://web.archive.org/web/20031002033025/http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX51Bundle.exe Minimum System Requirements: https://web.archive.org/web/20031002004822/http://www.divx.com:80/divx/system_requirements.php
