  1. I've been posting the beta updates so that anyone can go in and test for compatibility with their individual system. It seems that the major releases are the most likely to have something broken, less so the minor point releases. I myself have been testing the beta to ensure continued compatibility. It was with the first beta version 26.0.0.89 that I discovered Adobe broke compatibility with Flash Player 26. By reporting this to them, they were able to reproduce the bug on their XP systems, and they fixed it in the next weekly beta 26.0.0.102. Although many software developers still actively support Windows XP, it seems clear that they don't entirely check for compatibility, or do regression testing to make sure nothing broke! They only have so many man-hours, and if we don't tell them, they can't fix it!
  2. I do not use Opera as a primary browser, so I cannot comment. Would 12.18 work with the PPAPI plugin instead? You may find this link interesting: http://forums.opera.com/discussion/1870896/opera-12-18/p1 I typically use Chrome and Firefox, and IE 8 to a lesser degree.
  3. Beta channel has been updated to 26.0.0.133, and is confirmed working with Google Chrome on Windows XP. Chrome 45 and newer PPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player_ppapi.exe Chrome 44 and older NPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player.exe
  4. Since Microsoft won't go out of its way to notify you of unannounced XP patches, you should regularly visit https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=xp+sp3 and then sort by "Last Updated" column. Querying Windows XP won't work, it will give you all the results since the beginning of time including SP1/SP2, so you should search by "XP SP3" I wasn't aware of the June 10, Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP SP3 (KB4018271) until I saw it there, and also on this thread.
  5. Best Buy still sells Windows XP compatible wireless adapters. Best Buy is like a candy store if you like electronics. I highly recommend Netgear because they have a excellent track record of providing legacy backward compatibility, even with their newest products. I just bought a N600 (WNDA3100) last month for a laptop that needed access to WPA2 networks, the old G cards are spotty at best. The Netgear only requires a Pentium 300MHz with USB 1.1 or 2.0 port. This model has over 1900 reviews on BestBuy.com, with 4.5/5 overall rating, and 93% of customers would recommend it. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-rangemax-ieee-802-11n-usb-wi-fi-adapter-black/8669942.p?skuId=8669942
  6. I don't believe any exist. I think your best bet is to set up a guest virtual machine of XP on whatever operating system you are using. Then XP could use the host operating system's drivers. Download Windows XP Mode from Official Microsoft Download Center Windows 7: Load and Configure Windows XP Mode If you don't already own a 10 Gbps adapter,I would recommend Intel: http://ark.intel.com/products/family/46828/Intel-10-Gigabit-Server-Adapters.
  7. j7n If you refer to my post above, you will see I got WinRAR 5.50 beta running on Windows 2000. This was originally Windows 2000 RTM from February 2000. The only updates I used were Service Pack 4, the Service Pack 4 Security Rollup (SRP), and the UURollup from 2014. I am not sure if WinRAR 5.50 would run without those major updates. I prefer those updates (minimum SP4) because they improve functionality and stability of the system. You CANNOT install just the UURollup! Many people think you will get all the updates by doing so, but you will not. It's only a 46MBfile and does not include all of the updates of SP4 and the SRP.
  8. I think software developers are finding that their old software is living on longer than they anticipated, or would have liked. Even more important, the continued hacking risks online (WannaCry, ShadowBrokers, etc) mean they are supporting these popular software titles longer than they would have liked. Unsupported operating systems that get hacked pose a risk to the Internet as a whole. The Office 2003 update you mentioned is unprecedented, since Office 2003 fell out of extended support the same day as XP (4/8/2014). The updates also cover Office 2007, whose end of support is approaching on 10/10/2017; Microsoft extended this back in 2012. June 13, 2017, update for Microsoft Office
  9. The latest Silverlight 5.1.50907 still working on XP. Released June 13, 2017. Required for Netflix and other sites if you're not using HTML5. Standalone link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=229320 (alternate: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/Silverlight5.1.50907.exe) https://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/locale/en-us/html/Microsoft Silverlight Release History.htm#SL_5_1_50907
  10. Monroe The NPAPI installer for old versions of Chrome is the same download file as for Firefox. Chrome ended all NPAPI support including Flash beginning with version 45, Firefox 52 also ended NPAPI support for most plugins except Flash. When you run the Internet Explorer ActiveX, Firefox/Legacy Chrome NPAPI, and Chrome 45 + PPAPI installers, all of the extracted files end up in your C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash directory.
  11. http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/26.0.0.131/install_flash_player.exe You can also use this for Chrome 44 versions and older which do not support PPAPI.
  12. Beta channel has been updated to 26.0.0.129, and is confirmed working with Google Chrome on Windows XP. Chrome 45 and newer PPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player_ppapi.exe Chrome 44 and older NPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player.exe This is the fourth update to beta Flash in only 30 days! 26.0.0.110, 26.0.0.115, 26.0.0.123, and now 26.0.0.129!
  13. The full installers are always located at http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/xx.x.x.xxx/install_flash_player.exe (where xx.x.x.xxx is the version number of the Flash Player build) Unfortunately, Adobe has caught on and started blocking these older installer links by using ROBOTS.TXT. Your best bet is to download the older installers from Adobe's archive page: Archived Flash Player versions It's inconvenient because you have to download all of the installers for all operating systems, but it's better than nothing. It's not practical for me to archive all of these on my FTP, especially since Flash is still supported on XP. However, I did archive the installers for 19.0.0.245 on my FTP, because that's the final version that runs on XP SP2: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp2/flash19/
  14. Thanks for the info. I stopped relying on Reader a while ago, 1) because of regular security vulnerabilities, and 2) Chrome and Firefox began including their own [pdf.js] viewer. If other browsers didn't include a PDF viewer I would still be using it.
  15. Has anyone done extensive testing on XP to determine the latest version that actually runs? Adobe Reader 11.0.08 is supposedly the last version for XP, however, the 11.0.09 installer runs fine.
  16. I always use the offline installers, also to archive them in my FTP.
  17. Dibya Yes. For that system you need to use Google Chrome 34 or older, which does not require SSE2 , or Firefox 48 or older that does not require SSE2. Internet Explorer 8 still works with a lot of sites, believe it or not!
  18. 6/13/2017 13:00 EDT Microsoft releases new Windows XP security patches, warns of state-sponsored cyberattacks: https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/13/15790030/microsoft-windows-xp-vista-security-updates-june-2017 The updates are available from the Microsoft Update Catalog: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4012583 The official Microsoft article: Microsoft security advisory 4025685: Guidance for older platforms: June 13, 2017: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4025687/microsoft-security-advisory-4025685-guidance-for-older-platforms
  19. Beta channel has been updated to 26.0.0.123, and is confirmed working with Google Chrome on Windows XP. VERY IMPORTANT: Google deprecated NPAPI in 2015. (https://developer.chrome.com/extensions/npapi) If you are using Google Chrome 44 or older, you will need to use the NPAPI plugin. My testing reveals that the PPAPI plugin does NOT work on older versions of Chrome. This is particularly useful for older legacy systems with non-SSE2 compatible processors, such as my Gateway 2000 Solo 9300 with Pentium III. If you are using Google Chrome 45 or newer, you will need to use the PPAPI plugin. My testing reveals that the NPAPI plugin does NOT work on newer versions of Chrome (up to 49, the last supported version for Windows XP. Chrome 45 and newer PPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player_ppapi.exe Chrome 44 and older NPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player.exe
  20. Good find! Ironically, it has only been archived once in the Wayback Machine-- the same day you accessed it! Remember, if the page is archived, the download links that are attached are also archived. https://web.archive.org/web/20170528160433/http://stuff.onse.fi/winupdates/ Direct archived link for SP2: https://web.archive.org/web/20170528160433/http://stuff.onse.fi/winupdates/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-FIN.exe
  21. XP 64 and Server 2003 have the same kernel, 5.2.3790. Further complicating matters, Firefox 46 runs on both 32 and 64 bit variants of both operating systems, (Firefox 46 system requirements) so I suppose that "aboutmybrowser" just picked one!
  22. This spoof is also useful if you have a legacy system laying around with a processor that doesn't support SSE2, such as the Pentium III or older, and the AMD processors older than the Opteron and Athlon64. Firefox 48.x and 45.9.0 ESR are the final versions that support SSE processors, so this spoof could come in handy.
  23. If you have Update Agent 3.0, Internet Explorer 8, and Background Intelligent Transfer Service 2.0 (BITS 2.0), you should have no issues accessing Windows Update. Update Agent 3.0: http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe (archived link: https://web.archive.org/web/20110616080618/http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe) Internet Explorer 8: http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/C/0/CC0BD555-33DD-411E-936B-73AC6F95AE11/IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe (archived link: https://web.archive.org/web/20130510043925/http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/C/0/CC0BD555-33DD-411E-936B-73AC6F95AE11/IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS 2.0): original link dead, only archived one works: https://web.archive.org/web/20120828024732/http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/1/0/e1006a40-2447-48a1-804b-980995f27d51/WindowsXP-KB842773-v2-x86-enu.exe Please try installing the above updates, and then using the v6 of Windows Update. The "Windows Update" in Internet Explorer's Tools > Windows Update menu no longer works! You must use the legacy v6 site: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
  24. The original link for Finnish XP Service Pack 2 is http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/2/1/121e25ff-dcf9-4955-a1f6-20e1e7d8ca70/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-FIN.exe but it doesn't work anymore. Download details: https://web.archive.org/web/20141007055743/http://www.microsoft.com/fi-fi/download/details.aspx?id=28 The archive also does not have a working link for Finnish SP2 due to robots.txt.
