  1. If you’re interested in having the original archived Microsoft link for historical purposes, it’s here: https://web.archive.org/web/20060622081454/http:/download.microsoft.com/download/c/3/8/c386d681-4fcc-4dcf-838d-e3ff3ff67174/SPEU.exe Oddly, the original Microsoft link still “works”, but the file it downloads “is not a valid Win32 application”: http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/3/8/c386d681-4fcc-4dcf-838d-e3ff3ff67174/SPEU.exe
  2. Just wanted to put these out here for TBS (Throwback Saturday) Recently, I’ve been using my 19 year old IBM ThinkPad 600E a little more often to see what it can still do. It’s amazing how well this thing still runs. It was manufactured in September 1999. It is a testament to the quality of manufacturing back in the day. Even Flash Player 7 (http://sdfox7.com/win95/flashplayer7r73_winax.exe) still works! Secure web browsing is a little trickier, IE 5 is too old and Mozilla Firefox works better, even with persistent security certificate errors.
  3. Still not working. Apparently there are enough changes in 2.3.x that complicate running the program on XP. I wonder if a different compiler was used by the Audacity team. Major hacks shouldn't be needed to get the program to run, especially since 2.3 is a minor version update and not a major update version. I don't see why all versions of Audacity 2.x.x wouldn't be supported on XP.
  4. Are you saying all I have to do is create that entry in the registry? I wanted to double-check before I go messing around in there.
  5. @FranceBB This is the error I'm getting now:
  6. Old Avast security products will continue to receive security definition updates: "Older system users who have not updated will continue to be protected by the corresponding older versions of our security products, even receiving virus definition updates, but they will not benefit from the newest programs and features. If you have any questions about this End of Support notice, just reach out to Avast Support for answers." https://blog.avast.com/avast-discontinues-support-for-windows-xp-vista
  7. @FranceBB Still having issues, I assume there is an update or dependency I am missing. Windows XP SP3 on IBM Thinkpad:
  8. Sorry for the late response. I tried running this but I get an error that kernelxp.dll was not found.
  9. I am able to access secure websites and log into MSFN on Windows 98SE using SeaMonkey 1.1.19. However, I get a message on some sites “SeaMonkey can’t connect securely to “x” because the site uses a security protocol that isn’t enabled”. How do I “enable” it?
  10. @FranceBB Thanks, I'll try it when I get home from work around midnight.
  11. So I tried upgrading from Audacity 2.2.2 to version 2.3.0 (https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html). It was a no go. For reasons unknown, according to this Wiki, 2.3.0 is not 'supported' on Windows XP. By reading the Audacity forum, it appears it could be an issue related to Visual C++, but I currently have several versions of that so I am stumped. I don't know how to use Dependency Walker. Can someone else look into this? Version 2.3 seems to be a minor update to 2.2.
  12. Beta channel for Adobe Flash Player was updated October 22 to 31.0.0.135, and is confirmed working on Windows XP. https://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer.html Chrome 45 and newer PPAPI: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player_ppapi.exe Chrome 44 and older, and Mozilla Firefox (NPAPI): https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player.exe Internet Explorer: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/install_flash_player_ax.exe Uninstaller: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/uninstall_flash_player.exe
  13. That's the button I clicked, and after you click 'open' or 'run', you will get the window that I posted the screenshot of. It wants to install Flash Player which seems suspicious.
  14. @VistaLover I tried opening that file (https://www.datafilehost.com/d/dff0eb77) and it looks suspicious. Needless to say I did not attempt to install:
  15. I'm not sure if this is an option for your model ( or if you're still looking for info), but last year I had to downgrade an HP 15-ba009dx from Windows 10 to Windows 7. I remember in the BIOS having to enable legacy support, disable UEFI, and also disable Secure Boot. Again, there were like 3 separate changes I needed to make in the BIOS. I then Googled "15-ba009dx Windows 7" to find the drivers in the HP forums. Since they are usually Intel drivers, it shouldn't be too hard to get from Intel's site. You might just have to look up the hardware device IDs in Device Manager to determine what each device is. Don't forget to get the USB 3.0 Windows 7 drivers. Good luck!
  16. @VistaLover I have uploaded this to my FTP here (I left the original file name intact): http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/uBlock0.chromium.zip If needed, Firefox extension is here (http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/uBlock0.firefox.xpi) and source code is here: (http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/uBlock-1.16.20.zip) By the way, I personally think ad blockers can create more hassle than they're worth, since more and more sites can now detect when you're running one. That creates additional problems as they prompt you with pop-ups to disable your ad blocker!
  17. @Andy Sethmaier By the way, you don't need an "extension" to install Adobe Flash Player for Mozilla Firefox. Indeed, since Firefox support has been dropped for XP, I wouldn't count on extensions continuing to be made available. To install Flash Player for Firefox, simply download and run the NPAPI installer: https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player.exe
  18. If any of the sub folders are missing, you MUST create them, and then place the files in the appropriate folder. It will not work if any of these folders are missing.
  19. Java has been updated today October 16, 2018 to Version 8 Update 191. First, download the last known working XP installer (http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/jre-8u152-windows-i586.exe), then download the latest updated tar.gz file here https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html or my FTP http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/java/. Installer packages after Version 8 Update 152 do NOT work correctly on XP, so to manually update to the current version follow the instructions here: Or here:
  20. Andy What kind of machine are you attempting this on? The XP machine I use is a dual-core Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, relatively powerful for XP. If you are attempting this on a Pentium 4 or older, the performance is likely to be poor. The Internet of today has no mercy on single core machines, especially with Flash. As my page states, if you are using Chrome 44, you should use the NPAPI plug in. Due to changes in Chrome 45, you should use the PPAPI plug in for Chrome 45 and newer. This transition began back in January 2014 with Chrome 32. You can learn more about the NPAPI deprecation in Chrome 45 + here: The Chromium Projects: NPAPI deprecation: developer guide I have done this process successfully on many Windows XP machines. If it isn't working for you, you may need to review the steps to make sure you didn't miss anything.
  21. It's working for me, maybe you have outdated system components.
  22. I actually did get one of the sites working. The first one seems to be having technical difficulties; it won't even download the stream. The second one (https://demo.castlabs.com/) was fine.
  23. It still works on in Google Chrome and Netflix. You can try downloading the final 1.4.8.903 version from my FTP and extracting the files to your C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen Fox\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\WidevineCDM folder. You MUST replace my user name "Stephen Fox" with whatever your computer's name is. For more detail on this, please refer here:
  24. I currently own six ThinkPads (1999 600E, 2001 T23, 2003 T40, 2004 T41, 2007 R60, and 2011 SL510). The SL510 is the only one I own with HDMI which is uncommon in the T series even today. Many other laptops came with HDMI well before ThinkPads. I am a member on that forum. There is a wealth of knowledge and many of the members are veterans with excellent information.
