I am pleased to announce that I have tested the first beta for the next major release of Adobe Flash Player 27. It is tested and working on Windows XP with Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome 49, and Mozilla Firefox 52.2.1 ESR. It was released yesterday, August 2, 2017: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer.html -
@Lonttu03 You can also download XP Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3 in Finnish from the Microsoft Update Catalog: XP SP2: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/xpsp2_2feacc1ad5a703d508e9aee4c2fca1e0b9ca9962.exe XP SP3: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/svpk/2008/04/windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-fin_5654c021a03bfb10543a2c673bdfc42a853e347a.exe I only found the Express download for SP1, and nothing for SP1a: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=xp sp1 If you have a Finnish system, I would expect you could draw the full update after executing the small file here: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/sp1aexpress_930d8c9c73b18435b951d33ea44cf233b8f40218.exe

Adobe Flash, Shockwave, and Oracle Java on XP (Part 1)
sdfox7 replied to dencorso's topic in Windows XP
The EOL announcement certainly makes it sound that way: "Adobe will continue to support Flash on a number of major OSs and browsers that currently support Flash content through the planned EOL. This will include issuing regular security patches, maintaining OS and browser compatibility and adding features and capabilities as needed." This seems to be a limited update related to security vulnerabilities. Up until April 2016, the update cadence had been every month or two. Since that time it has been exactly 3 months between each release. I expect Java to be another legacy application to be killed off in the future. I am not so sure it is as necessary or widely used as it previously was in the early 2000s. I would say Java's heyday was between 2004 and 2006, Java 5.0 and Java 6.0. DID YOU KNOW: Java 6.0 still receives non-public security updates. -
Is there Creative Sound Core 3D soundcard XP 32 bit driver? INF guy needed.
sdfox7 replied to ruthan's topic in Windows XP
I don't know if an XP driver exists. I went to this webpage, and at the bottom selected XP as OS. It then allowed me to download a file, SBR3_PC_CD_L13_1_01_13.exe. I was able to execute the file and initialize install, but I did not continue the process; there is no point because without the hardware on my system the driver would fail. I don't want to muck up my registry with values for hardware I don't have. -

Java was updated to Version 8 Update 141 yesterday, July 18, 2017. Tested and working on XP SP3. https://www.java.com/en/download/ I recommend the standalone offline installer (jre-8u141-windows-i586.exe), it is usually more reliable to install, and can be archived: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html -
I am glad I archived it when I did. Since I am the only source on the web, effective immediately I have archived my own link, in case something happens to my server: https://web.archive.org/web/20170718145441/http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/primetime_gmp_win_x86_gmc_40673.zip I find it odd that I am the only source on the web that is serving the package. Usually there is more than one source to download something!

Monroe Thank you for your feedback. I actually created a full in-depth explanation, with pictures, for manually updating Adobe Flash Player with Windows XP and Chrome. It was helpful for one soul over at the Adobe forums who was confused. Anyone, including a newbie, should be able to find it useful. http://sdfox7.com/chromexp3.htm Adobe discussion: https://forums.adobe.com/message/9660470#9660470 -

SRWare Iron and SeaMonkey are both still working on XP SP3. SRWare Iron is based on Chrome 49. If you are having issues there might be a separate problem with your system. If you want you can download the last version of Chrome 49.0.2623.112 for XP from my FTP here: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/ChromeStandaloneSetup.exe SRWare Iron 49 is also based on Chrome 49: Portable ZIP: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/IronPortable_49.zip or installer: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/srware_iron_49.exe SeaMonkey 2.46: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/SeaMonkey Setup 2.46.exe -
Good point! I suppose we should just use the Internet Explorer 11 agent string on Windows XP. I am pretty sure most developers are still coding for it. Windows 7 has a large market share, and any version of Firefox released in the last 4-5 years would likely support the same feature set as IE 11, or at least be compatible with websites that support IE 11. I think to keep things simple, I will be setting Firefox to impersonate IE 11. Since IE11 is the end of the line for Windows 7, it won't be necessary to change it again. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko Internet Explorer 11 on Windows XP. Hahaha, I deliberately left the NT version to report XP. IMPORTANT: updating Firefox to the newest version deletes the general.useragent.override string. So if/when Firefox 52 ESR receives another update, you'll need to go back into about:config and re-enter this string! You can test your browser and OS combination here: https://www.whatismybrowser.com/

Microsoft deleted XPSP3/2000SP4 Links
sdfox7 replied to blackwingcat's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I am going to take a stab in the dark, and guess that because the Internet Archive is US-based, many of the foreign pages are not being archived. As I demonstrated in the below link last year, SOMETIMES it is possible to obtain the downloads in other languages, simply by changing the default microsoft.com/en-us to alternate language while keeping the rest of the link intact, but not always. https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=408364#p408364 -
If you'd like an even older and lighter version of Foxit that runs on Windows 95 and NT 4.0, I still have Foxit 1.3 on my FTP. That version was released in 2005/2006, is only 1.1MB and will even fit on a floppy disk. http://sdfox7.com/win95/FOXIT13.EXE

I agree. I have found VMWare easier for virtualizing Windows 95, because it supports "floppy"installation, which the current version of Virtual PC doesn't (I don't think VPC has supported floppy since VPC 2007.)

When you download and install XP mode on Windows 7, the host machine (Windows 7) will download KB958559 from Windows Update, and initialize Virtual PC setup.
-
Monroe Are you referring to XP Mode, which I referenced above? It is a "free" version of XP that runs under Windows 7 Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate. You need to install Virtual PC first, then XP Mode. Windows Virtual PC (you need to select 32-bit or 64-bit, depending on your version of Windows 7): https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3702 Windows XP Mode: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx%3Fid=8002

New British aircraft carrier equipped with Windows XP
sdfox7 replied to Roffen's topic in Windows XP
I saw that article over the weekend, and was thrilled !!! -
I stated in another post recently, that if someone wants to run XP on modern hardware, the best option, in my opinion, is to run it in a virtual machine: XP functions just fine in a virtual machine under Windows 7, and you don't have to worry about hunting down drivers, because XP will use the host machine's drivers. All of the software written for XP will run in a virtual machine just fine. This screenshot below illustrates me running XP virtual machine under a Windows 7 host machine. That installation has a lot of software for XP including Chrome, Firefox, Silverlight, Microsoft Office, etc. I was installing the WannaCry patch on XP sometimelast month. I want to emphasize that I installed full XP under Virtual PC, NOT XP Mode!!!. XP Mode has some limitations, and it is why I chose to use an actual XP CD ISO image when installing under Windows 7. A huge limitation, that will affect many many people, is that XP Mode will NOT run on Windows 7 Home Premium. Home Premium is likely the most common version that was released on consumer computers. So, you need to install Virtual PC, and then use a physical CD of XP, or an ISO image. A second major limitation, is that XP Mode was only made for Windows 7. If you are running Windows 8.x or 10, you need to use a physical CD or ISO image.

@j7n Yes, you are correct- some "enhancements" will break. On the second graphic I provided, on the Google News pages, the left side under sections, all of the icons are missing and replaced with a square. Even on this MSFN page, some of the graphics are broken, but the placeholders are still there. Hovering over them will tell you what they represent, as I have denoted with my red edits below. The increased speed and font readability is easily worth the trade-off of having square placeholders.

I have noticed that remote web fonts have made some web pages difficult to read clearly, and contribute to browser slowdown with font rendering. If you follow the instructions in this link (credit birdie at TechPowerUp), you experience faster web browsing speeds, and (in my opinion) clearer text. I noticed a huge speed increase. Disabling web fonts in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome Some of us hate downloadable web fonts so here's how you can stop websites (including techpowerup) from forcing their glorious fonts down your throat. 1) Mozilla Firefox Open about:config Set "gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled" to false. 2) Google Chrome Right Click Chrome's launcher icon, click "Properties". At the end of the launcher string add the following: " --disable-remote-fonts" (without quotes). You're done. Before: After:
