I think you should ask Tihiy on how he got Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 to run on a Win98se machine. email or send him a PM (personal message)

98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
DONT, MDGx. Let me elaborate on what I said about installing the KB917283 and KB922770 security updates. NO, the_guy. DONT create MS06-033 and MS06-056 updates! listen up, MDGx & the_guy: Just extract the NDP20-KB917283-X86.msp file from the NDP20-KB917283-X86.exe file and double-click on the NDP20-KB917283-X86.msp file to install the patch. Same thing with the NDP20-KB922770-X86.msp file. extract that file from the NDP20-KB922770-X86.exe file and run the NDP20-KB922770-X86.msp file. That's what I did on my WinME + NFR 2 machine and those patches got installed. They didnt have to check Windows version and it only has to detect NFR 2. MS05-004 for NFR 1.0 SP3 & NFR 1.1 SP1 you can try to make. MS05-004 says that the updates for NFR 1.0 & 1.1 are included in NFR 1.0 SP4 & NFR 1.1 SP2. But there are no NFR 1.0 SP4 and NFR 1.1 SP2 downloads. -
BUT of course, disable scripting for all sites may have major side effects such as web pages not displaying properly or some functions of a site not working at all. better off adding some web sites in the Trusted Sites zone and others into the Restricted Sites zone for better security

either the MSXML4.MSI package did not downloaded properly onto my PC or the file was posted/uploaded incorrectly onto your site, which is why I got an error message that the file was corrupted. so I just extracted the XML MSI pack from the XP KB925672 exe package and ran it onto my WinME machine and it installed the MSXML4.DLL, MSXML4A.DLL and MSXML4R.DLL files into the Windows\System folder. revise the Q925672.EXE package as you need to include the MSXML4A.DLL file. Also with the .NET Framework 2.0 KB917283 and KB922770 security updates, you can extract the MSP files inside those two updates and run them under Win98/ME + NFR 2.0. In other words, you CAN use the KB917283 and KB922770 security patches under Win98 & ME with .NET Framework 2.0. The KB922270 security patch will update only the System.Web.dll file under Win98/ME + NFR 2.0. XML 4.0 does NOT require IE6.0 SP1, MDGx. I can install XML 4.0 KB925672 even on a Win98/ME machine with an older version of IE. -

905915 does not work on 95, 867801 seems to be the latest working update. Petr IE905915 for IE 5.5 SP2 breaks BOTH IE 5.5 SP2 AND Win95. see the "ie6 on win95" topic about this. MSXML4.MSI PACKAGE CORRUPTED MDGX!!!! REMOVE IMMEDATELY!!! -
Vista RC1 build 5600 contains MSVBVM60.DLL 6.00.9792 1374751 bytes. Petr thanks, Petr and jimmsta. let's see if the_guy can include v6.00.9796 of MSVBVM60.DLL into the next release of the ME service pack.

CHKDSK for Win9xME/DOS is CRAP! OK for WinNT4/2k/XP/2k3/Vista when checking FAT16/FAT32/NTFS drives. the CHKDSK module from the NT-based Windows versions dont work under Win95/98/ME/DOS. CHKDSK for Win9xME can NOT fix "physical" problems on your FDs/HDs the way that Scandisk does. Also, ScanDisk (in either DOS or Windows mode) can find and fix MANY MORE problems than what CHKDSK does.

98 (FE), 98 SP1, 98 SE + ME SHELL32.DLL fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
agreed. use the browselc.dll and browseui.dll files LLXX mentioned in her earlier post when using any release of IE6 under Win98/ME to solve the delete large number of files problem -
ah screw it. I'm going to remove ALL traces of Acrobat reader v4.x/5.x/6.x off ALL my Win9xME machines. will use Foxit Reader 2.0 which loads 3x or even 5x faster than ANY version of Acrobat Reader. Foxit Reader 2.0 can be downloaded here: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php I even installed Foxit Reader 2.0 on an ancient Pentium 100Mhz PC with 80megs of RAM and it loaded in a few seconds. It's much smaller and more simpler than ANY version of Acrobat Reader. just needed a simple PDF viewer in Foxit Reader.

yea the freakin' FEAD Optimizer setup file refused to extract the Adobe Reader 7.08 setup files onto a Win98/ME machine even with KernelXP update installed on those machines looks like the we'll have to run AdbeRdr708_en_US.exe on a Win2k/XP machine first. running that file will copy the Adobe Reader 7.08 setup files to the "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Setup Files\RdrBig708\ENU" folder. then we can copy the rest of the Acrobat Reader 7.08 files from the W2k/XP computer onto a Win98/ME computer with kernelXP update.
-
I could not get Adobe Reader 7.08 to install under Win98/ME, EVEN with the KernelXP update installed. I ran the AdbeRdr708_en_US.exe file under Win98se with KernelXP update installed and I get an error message that I am using an "unsupported OS"

what version of windows are u using when attempting to use adobe reader 7, awergh? Foxit Reader 2.0 has been officially released. get it here: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/
-
but as you found out, awergh, you encountered a lot of error messages on your win95 machine about some "DLLs and OCXs missing". and I bet that some of the DLL and OCX files could NOT be "registered" onto a Win95 machine due to incompatibilities with Win95's core system files. there are reasons why MS didnt want to make IE6 run under Win95 and they were right on glad it was not me who fell into the "trap" of installing ie6 under win95. i knew better!

98 (FE), 98 SP1, 98 SE + ME SHELL32.DLL fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I think I found the fix for this large files manipulation bug in Win98 SE with MS IE 6.0 or 6.0 SP1 installed... MDGx, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the browselc.dll, browseui.dll & shdocvw.dll files from the BROWSE98.EXE patch for IE6 SP1 did not fix the large files manipulation bug in Win98/ME with IE6/IE6 SP1 as I've just tested on my WinME + IE6 SP1 machine when deleting a large amount of files. -
98 (FE), 98 SP1, 98 SE + ME SHELL32.DLL fix
erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
though you need to be using version 5.50.4948.700 of BROWSEUI.DLL instead of 5.50.4807.2300 to have the latest security benefits for the BROWSEUI.DLL file, LLXX. I no longer use 5.50.4807.2300 of BROWSEUI.DLL file because it has security flaws that are fixed in version 5.50.4948.700. I'll see if I can test out the BROWSE98.EXE patch on my WinME + IE6 SP1 machine, MDGx. eidenk, you need to be using IE6 SP1, NOT IE 5.5 SP2, in order for the BROWSE98.EXE patch to work. -

the shdocvw.dll and browseui.dll XP SP1 files from MS06-065 did NOT resolve the "delete large number of files" problem under Win98/ME + IE6 SP1, the_guy. I've just tested this. note to MDGx: several unofficial IE updates needed to be revised- IE905915.exe < this one DID install under a Win95 + IE 5.5 SP2 machine with an "immediate" install with NO prompts [arrggghh, I HATE immediate installs MDGx; immediate installs CAN cause accidents]. Add the "Do you want to install this update?" prompt in unofficial IE905915 patch for IE 5.5 SP2 and restrict the Windows version to just Win98, 2000 & NT4 by using TargetWin9xVersion=4.10.1998-4.10.2222 and TargetNTVersion=4.00.1381.0-4.00.1381.99999. same with unofficial OE911567.exe and Q911567.exe patches as these also need the "Do you want to install this update?" prompt. -

The INF-Tool found at the following site can also convert REG files into INF files AND does NOT require .NET Framework and can work under Win9xME and WinNTx OSes. http://www.inner-smile.com/dl_inf.htm the "lite" version of INF-Tool is free for personal use -
nope. could be bad IE 5.5 SP2 setup file or have installed the IE 5.5 SP2 updates Petr mentioned. un-install them and apply the KB867801 patch for IE 5.5 SP2. awergh, if you really have the IE6 files installed under Win95, get rid of them. IE6 was not meant to run under Win95. stick with either IE 5.01 SP2 or IE 5.5 SP2 as those versions are the last ones supported under Win95. btw - I tested the IE 5.01 SP2 version of KB871260 under Win95 a few months ago and that version of the patch did NOT break Win95 nor IE 5.01 SP2. IE 5.01 SP2 worked ok with KB871260. The IE 5.5 SP2 version of KB871260, on the other hand, did break Win95 and IE 5.5 SP2.

erpdude8 replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
that's because Microsoft will not release ANY MSXML 2.6 (msxml2.dll) fixes whatsoever. Reading MS article 924191 carefully: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924191 the KB924191 security updates disable use of the msxml2.dll files; thus no fix for MSXML 2.6 will be developed. Also, DirectX October 2006 Redist pack released. This one DOES work under Win98 & ME unlike the original August 2006 Redist. DirectX package. I didnt realize MS revised the Aug. 2006 DirectX Redist pack in late August to make it work under Win98/ME. I think the_guy is on to something You may want to take a look at the KB889669 patch for IE6 SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889669 the KB889669 fix has Q889669.inf and Q889669_d.inf; note that this was before MS made GDR and QFE editions of updated IE6 SP1 files. IE918899 and IE925486 should work under NT4 when using Q918899.inf & Q925486.inf respectively BUT Service Pack 6a and IE6 SP1 are required. IE6 SP1 cant install under NT4 systems less than SP6. for Win98/ME, create the Q918899_d.inf and Q925486_d.inf files and revise the unofficial fixes again. -

MDGx, I have noticed recently that some of the unofficial patches for Win9xME have been created or revised from version 6.00.2800.1168 of wextract.exe. where can this specific version be found? -

yup, my thought exactly. you may have had an older version of CRYPT9X that broke WU and MDGx revised it a few times to fix the WU problems. the CRYPT9X.EXE file I got in mid August 2006 worked ok and did not break WU. new XML security update (replaces previous XML 2.6, 3.0, 4.0 & 6.0 security updates/hotfixes): http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-061.mspx -
nope. FMLFNS loads at startup in the Windows registry which can easily be disabled from MSConfig or you can delete the FMLFNS startup registry entry and prevent it from loading. personally, I delete the registry entry and then run FMLFNS manually by double-clicking on FMLFNS.EXE from the Windows\System folder. I created a shortcut icon to the FMLFNS.exe file on the desktop. no you can NOT, PROBLEMCHYLD! The NT4 version of Winfile.exe is incompatible with Win95/98/ME and you WILL get a "link to missing export SHELL32.DLL:StrChrW" error message if you attempt to run the NT4 edition of File Manager under Win95/98/ME. Looks like NT4 Winfile.exe requires the "unicode" versions of Shell32.dll (or the NT editions of Shell32.dll) in order for it to work. AND some mentioned earlier that the Win9x version of Winfile.exe is a 16-bit app while the NT4 version of Winfile.exe is a 32-bit app.

Problem of update on the website

wrong. totally the opposite. CRYPT9X.EXE should make Windows Update site work properly again after installing unofficial Win98se SP 1.62. version 1.62 of the 98se SP is what caused Windows Update not to work and was fixed in version 2.1a. and you MUST also install the latest version of ROOTSUPD.EXE to resolve the Windows Update error of "expiring certificates" as noted in this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=81676
