  1. just remember that you need to have Windows Installer 2.0 installed under 98se/me. Any version of Sun Java runtime software can't be installed without MSI 2.0.
  2. I actually think you should remove Firefox 2.x before installing Firefox 3.68. Some of the settings and other stuff from the FF2 user profiles may not migrate cleanly into FF3. Update: Composing emails from Firefox 2.0.0.20 in Hotmail didn't work on my WinME computer. Blinking cursor does not show up in the Compose email message box. Removed FF2 and installed Firefox 3.6.8 and KernelEx 4.5 RC4 under WinME and Compose dialog box now displays a blinking cursor in the message box. Bug_zs, it's ultimately the fault of Microsoft changing the Windows Live Hotmail site to work only with recent versions of Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome browsers and breaking compatibility with older ones. So yes, you are "forced" to use newer versions of Firefox on your machine whenever you use Hotmail.
  3. no tom. the 98se SP does NOT give you the option of saving old Win98se system files. no such feature exists. if and when you uninstall the SP, it will automatically restore the win98se system files from the original win98se CD or from the folder where the win98se installation files are stored.
  4. Chrome and Safari never works under Win9x, rainyd (with and/or without KernelEx). These webkit based browsers require native XP/Vista/Win7 OSes. heck, Chrome & Safari don't work on a "plain" Win2000 system, though blackwingcat seems to find a way to workaround that on his win2k machine.
  5. Version 2.57 of the Win98 First Edition Service Pack posted: Full Edition (55.43 Mb): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TDIWH25O Lite Edition (30.13 Mb): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2JRGAR0Z Changes: -Updated several MS True Type Fonts from Windows XP SP3 -Updated WMP 6.4 packages to include latest strmdll.dll fix from KB974112 -Updated Graphics Filters, Root Certificates & DST/TZ packages -Replaced Windows Script Host files version 5.7.0.16535 with version 5.6.0.8838 -Wintop Kerneltoy is now an installation option for the Lite Edition of the 98fe SP; so now both Full and Lite editions have Wintop included -Updated ATL71.DLL & MFC71.DLL files to version 7.10.6101.0 -Replaced ASYCFILT.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL & STDOLE2.TLB files with version 2.40.4520 from KB327177 -Updated several files that fix some recent security flaws (that I don't want to talk much about in detail) -Updated MSVBVM60.DLL file to version 6.0.98.15 from KB970157 This release no longer automatically uninstalls the Command Prompt Here powertoy when uninstalling the 98fe service pack. You must uninstall Command Prompt Here separately.
  6. I know. I don't want install ExFat. There is no problem with this. It's time to fix Win98Dos and Win98 and make support for use ExFat. Here lies the rub. Blue Ray movies - 6,7,8GB. You know what I mean... Let me translate what RLoew said: [short version] It's *impossible*! [long version] It's *impossible* without a *major* rewrite of the whole OS. And, in case one ever did it, after a rewrite of such magnitude it wouldn't actually even *be* Win 9x anymore. Yes. The sole thing you asked was for someone to create an installable ExFat driver. This is impossible. Then, in your next post you denied this, and instead escalated to a full system rewrite. This, while possible, is improbable and, if done, would result in a totally different OS... That said, I don't see how do you intend to continue this thread... rloew and dencorso, I think you should tell MDGx about this that making an exfat driver for win9x is not possible as rloew said it would require rewriting the win9x architecture. not only that, exfat under win9x would have also required also a DRV or VXD driver for full exfat support, in case the DLL/SYS exfat drivers from xp/vista don't work under w9x. getting win9x to recognize and access exfat partitions is one thing; getting win9x to even read, write or format/partition exfat volumes is another.
  7. Version 1.05 released. See very first post on this forum topic for the links.
  8. no, lelandaust! Running NT4 File Manager under 98se/ME WITH KernelEx installed results in error message "The WINFILE.EXE file is linked to missing export SHELL32.DLL:StrChrW". I've checked this myself and confirmed it. Looks like KernelEx will need to be updated to include StrChrW function for SHELL32.DLL file, which the Win98/ME versions do NOT have (AND KernelEx will need to "patch" 98se/ME's shell32.dll file to make that possible).
  9. eh forget the divshare link to the Win98 DDK stuff. divshare servers are not responding. so divshare download link doesn't seem to work anymore. however, I did find a working link to the Win98 DDK here. documentation not included though.
  10. found a new working link to the Win98 DDK pack [25.1Mb in size]: http://www.vckbase.com/tools/drv/98ddk.exe
  11. an upcoming 2.57 release of the win98 first edition service pack will be available sometime in June which will have some newer fixes.
  12. This is the first time I've seen 98lite's main draw referred to negatively. My 98micro system has been running 5 years without a shell conflict. as long as you use apps that don't depend on functions from v4.72 of shell32.dll file. the win95 shell is very anemic, weak and flawed nowadays since my old computers (intel celeron-based machines) can handle win98+ shells and more programs seem to require at least the win98/2000/me shell.
  13. though there's even a much newer but unofficial timezone patch for Win2k on MDGx's Addons page: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TZU The intelliadmin unofficial dst patch for w2k is outdated. MDGx's Win2k DST patch is much newer and has the Dec. 2009 TZ reg entries for W2k.
  14. no one really knows, consumer4beta. not even I know why gurgelmeyer vanished w/out a trace. i guess Kelsenellenelvian's plans for USP v5.2 are completely out the window. anyways, all support for Win2k will come to an end on july 2010 but i'm ok using the latest usp 5.1 release on my relative's old Win2k machine.
  15. the download can be obtained recently on the Hotfix share site without registration, Quisquose. so try again now. however, this Netmeeting-KB927853 hotfix is no longer available from Microsoft support as they've removed MS KB article 927853 [now produces "Sorry, but we couldn't find the page that you requested" error message] and have pulled the actual hotfix package itself. so that means you can no longer request it from Microsoft as Netmeeting is a deprecated and obsolete software.
  16. attempting to download Win2k SP5.1 at either eSnips or MediaFire today. btw, pre-existing rootkit infects the atapi.sys file; if KB977165 is installed and you have an infected atapi.sys file, your system may end up in endless rebooting loop or you will experience BSOD crashes on every startup. so far KB977165 has not crippled my Win2k/XP computers as I have a "clean" atapi.sys file.
  17. sorry to be responding to this old thread but the USP5 torrents listed here are now dead as the RyanVM tracker site has been down recently...perhaps for good.
  18. unfortunately the RyanVM tracker site still has NOT worked on all the XP/Vista machines that I've tested today [produces error 404 message in IE/Opera/Seamonkey/Chrome/Safari browsers etc.]. barely 4 months since the problem and not a resolution in sight. very disappointing indeed.
  19. actually, lightning slinger, what I meant to say is can you install Java 5.0u22 under Win98se without any problems (and without the KernelEx addon?) try it out and post your results.
  20. I have a question for you 9x users. Does Java 5.0 Update 22 work under Win98se? One Win98se user claimed that java 5.0 update 22 does not install under 98se. see here: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5415280 You can get the latest Java download for Win98/ME from this site: http://java.com/en/download/windows98me_manual.jsp
  21. and who exactly what that person be, dragon695? [name please] maybe because that person is not authorized by M$ to share the tool. B) oh well
  22. and I second that, cluberti. unlike Ascii2, I find WinXP SP3 to be actually more stable (and of course, secure) than XP SP2 and XP SP1. only noticed a slight performance decrease in SP3 but far more reliable than SP2 and SP1. and btw, ALL of my apps are XP SP3 compatible. you can't put a price tag on reliability
  23. I used to have corbis photo and horror screensaver working under XP, enuffsaid. it required a bunch of registry entries to get them to work. but since I don't use 'em anymore I kinda forgot how to make them work.
  24. nope. weird. try uninstalling the update and see if you get your original settings back. if not, then the problem is caused by something else.
  25. it would have been nice if you guys looked at MDGx's Software essentials page on the esdi_506.pdr patches for Win98se: MS deliberately removed MS KB article 252187 off their support site to make room for new KB articles for new products. kinda sucks doesn't it, wsxedcrfv. However the actual KB252187 hotfix is still available if you use this link to request it from MS (you may have to click on "I Accept" button before proceeding).
