  3. Firstly, the Java installer is compressed, but also it dynamically generates many data files during install. Have you noticed the time it takes to install Java? However, this is typical of any highly compressed installer. Take for example, Adobe Reader 9.0 (under Windows XP). The initial file is 34MiB which expands to 104MiB of install files, that in the end makes the Adobe folder a total of 198MiB... About file compression:I've seen a 10 MB rar file which expands to 2.1 GB when fully uncompressed [it's a DVD iso]. ... Not a typo. Have fun.
  4. Could you please re-post a link for this file?Rapidshare deleted it. Then I can upload it at my site, so we can all have it for a little longer. Thanx

  7. Tihiy's IPtest tool can be uninstalled/deleted only if you delete this registry key first (using regedit):HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{35CEC8A3-2BE6-11D2-8773-92E220524153} Then you need to restart Windows, so STOBJECT.DLL doesn't load anymore. Only after that you can uninstall/delete IPtest.exe . HTH
  8. According to M$, the taskbar icon should disappear if you delete lights.exe in Windows 98/98 SE:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834371 I don't know of another way to do this. HTH
  9. Try this updated installer, it should work now, independent if you have (or not) an Xbox controller (any brand) hooked up to your PC...X360C.EXE [146 KB, free]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/X360C.EXE FYI: In case your XBox controller does not work properly after installing this driver, try this: Start button -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Device Manager -> select your XBox controller name (as detected by your Windows OS) -> click the Update / Install driver button. HTH
  10. Maybe my web site list is slightly out of date? If you post the 37 missing file list here, I'll update it soon. Thanks
  11. Windows 95, 98 + ME do have a connection tray icon built into the OS [%windir%\SYSTEM\lights.exe], but may or may not work with modern broadband connections. 12. Yes, with KernelEx K-Lite Codecs 4.4.2 (or newer) may work as an installer executable on 98/98 SE/ME, but some codecs/drivers/tools installed by K-Lite will NOT work with 9x [98/ME] APIs, because they are built strictly for NTx OSes [2000/XP/2003]. HTH
  13. Doesn't work... The listed method of installing Java 6 Update 11 gives the same failure message as if trying to continue with the installer. I don't think anyone has so far got Java 6 Update 10 or 11 working in 9x Thanks!I have removed Windows 98/98 SE/ME from Java 6 supported OSes.

  15. I am using NVidia v77.72, which does not have a shutdown problem under Win98, together with a bfg Geforce 7800 GS OC video card (AGP, 256MB), a 20" ViewSonic VP2030b LCD monitor (max.resolution: 1600x1200), an E4500 dual core and 2GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the widescreen resolution 1440x900 is not on the nVidia Screen Resolution menu of v77.72, confirming your statement. Most new LCD monitors, however, have the widescreen resolutions 1920x1200, 1680x1050 or 1440x900. I cannot use nVidia v82.69 because its shutdown problem erratically blacks out, on the Viewsonic under DVI, POST-info and the System Commander boot menu for the selection of operating systems. Is there a fix for the v77.72 driver to support under Win98 newer widescreen resolutions? If not, this would be a major limitation on the usability of Win98 with modern hardware, like widescreen LCD monitors. The 16:10 widescreen resolution 1280x800 is actually displayed among the currently possible resolutions of v77.72. On another older desktop with the same ViewSonic VP2030b LCD monitor and the same bfg Geforce 7800 GS OC video card, but with Nvidia v82.16 (not v82.69) the widescreen resolution 1440x900 is not displayed on the Screen resolution menu, and cannot be set to 1440x900 via Add Custom resolution. Is this due to the Nvidia driver or due to the ViewSonic monitor? I.e. if I upgrade from Nvidia v82.16 to v82.69, will 1440x900 appear in the Screen resolutions menu for the Viewsonic? BTW this desktop has shutdown problems because of v82.16. I am about to buy a monitor for building a 2nd Win98-compatible desktop with modern hardware, and would like to get a widescreen LCD monitor for it, so your ideas are highly appreciated. The importance of this matter would even warrant a new topic, like "Running Win9x/ME with a widescreen LCD monitor" BTW, your ReadMe also lists 1600x1200 as widescreen, is that a typo or really widescreen? I'm afraid all NV drivers older than 82.69 do not support widescreen monitor resolutions. I don't have the code to mod the older drivers, and a simple manufacturer device or resolutions list INF add-in doesn't seem to work in my case [GeForce 9800 GTX+ PCIx and HannSpree 28" widescreen LCD]. Also, a mix-and-match of files from different driver versions is a no-no! Your computer(s) will lock up! You could try to mix-and-match files of different versions, but I wouldn't recommend it, unless you have the patience to reboot to native DOS and restore a working driver numerous times. HTH
  16. If any1 cares: In 98SE2ME options 1 + 2: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/ To backup Windows 98 SE I use a DOS style batch file [CLONE98.BAT] and the DOS based tool XCLONE.EXE [free] which backs up the entire %windir% [usually C:\WINDOWS] folder + all subfolders + all files to any destination [requires editing the BAT] with 1 click. Details here [the "BACKUP + RESTORE WINDOWS 98 SE" + "TESTING... CLONE98.PIF + 98RESTOR.BAT" sections]: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/read1st.php To restore Windows 98 SE from the backup [created by CLONE98.BAT] I use 98RESTOR.BAT which uses Win98SE's own MOVE.EXE native DOS mode tool. These 2 BAT files must be executed from within Windows. Some of these backup/restore operations require re-booting to native DOS mode. HTH

  18. Basically "wireless" refers to any remote device/peripheral/terminal/computer linked thru 1-way/2-way radio, infrared (IR) or laser waves [facilitated by a transmitter/receiver chipset/combo] to other device(s)/peripheral(s)/terminal(s)/computer(s). Literally wireless means "without wires" = actual term. Advantage: longer distance reach, requires less advanced technology [cheaper] Disadvantage: less accurate, less data Wireless @ Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless Basically "Wi-Fi" is a newer/better wireless standard [controlled by the Wi-Fi Alliance], uses higher frequency [hence higher "fidelity"] radio waves, which allows more [and eventually more secure] data to be streamed into the same transmission. Literally Wi-Fi means "wireless fidelity" = only a "catchy" slogan. Advantage: more accurate, more data Disadvantage: shorter distance reach, requires more advanced technology [more expensive = but mass produced makes it more affordable] Wi-Fi @ Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-fi HTH

  20. Can you please PM me with these files:O3.BAT O3DOS.BAT O3RES.BAT O3RES.INF O3WEB.BAT from the version [8-27-2007] you had problems with? I'll take a look and post here findings. Thanks. BTW: To my knowledge, the current 98SE2ME edition and all older editions from 2008 install 98SE2ME option 3 properly. Also, please make sure you are using current [newest] versions/editions of all packs/updates you install, older ones might have bugs. HTH
