  1. Sometime ago, at the request of many of this board members, I have "trimmed" down the number of topics actually listed above the "Pinned" line for board interface ease of use, because some of us still use lower screen resolutions. The "Stickified" list is the definitive reference of all "pinned" topics: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95815 HTH
  2. soporific, This A-P topic is still on the sticky list [has never been removed]: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95815 HTH
  3. What do you mean?See here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95815 under... I am not the author/maintainer of A-P, so you need to contact soporific for any questions regarding his project.soporific's PM box: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=Ms...4&MID=60134 HTH
  4. Maybe you can create a single exe to perform all these steps without having people do this manually, because it looks like it's a lot of work just to get rid of RP7.
  5. If I may suggest TrayIcon for even further "trimming" of your tray icon numbers, consumes very little resources...It is only a list of shortcuts that loads in the Tray. From there you can start any program/Windows function/screen saver you wish. Cannnot find it on the net anymore, so here it is... * TrayIcon v2.5 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 creates, modifies, removes + reorders Tray Icons (single-click system Tray shortcuts) for any Windows/DOS program, app, game, screen saver, Windows function etc, changes icons to any valid icon file/library/executable/bitmap, highly customizable: http://www.mdgx.com/files/TRAYICON.TXT Direct download [124 KB, uncrippled, no nag shareware]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/TI25.ZIP Enjoy.

  11. Looks like your boot.ini is not properly set for dual-boot. Respectively this line, which does nothing: Correct entry is: Note the equal (=) sign.Under the [operating systems] section, it needs 2 (or more) lines, 1 for each OS u want to boot into. Then make sure timeout= is 2 or above, otherwise you may not see the boot menu. Example [mine: XP + 98 SE]: All lines above the [boot loader] section are comments.Note that X:\= is a fake drive letter, and this line only forces XP to reboot cold, if you select this option. This is only an example, you need to adapt it to your hardware specs, like drive/partition letters, directory/folder names etc. Note that boot.ini does not support LFNs (Long File Names), because the boot sequence does not have the LFN driver loaded in NT4/2000/XP/2003 [a little different in Vista/2008/7]. Therefore you should not use any LFN names in boot.ini. The only name types you can use in boot.ini are MS-DOS 8.3 SFNs (Short File Names), like (case insensitive): FOLDERXX FILENAME.EXT Boot.ini editors [free(ware)]: * BOOT.INI Configuration Utility v1.5.0 32-bit for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 tweaks ALL BOOT.INI boot settings, including the UNDOCUMENTED ones [2.47 MB, freeware]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/BOOTINI.EXE * EditBINI v1.01.1 16-bit for DOS edits Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 BOOT.INI on NTFS drives/partitions from MS-DOS 5/6/7/8 + Windows 9x/ME: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html Direct download [74 KB, freeware]: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads/editbini.zip Does NOT work from within Windows NT/2000/XP/2003! 12. Regedit search is really primitive and slow. I never use it.What I do: I backup the entire registry to a .REG file: run Regedit -> highlight "My Computer" [root] -> click on "Registry" from menu -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type whatever file name in the "File name" field -> browse to the drive + folder you wish -> click the Save button. Then search this REG file [plain text] using a free(ware) Notepad replacement: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#TXT FYI: Notepad cannot open files > 64 KB, and will eventually redirect such files to open in Wordpad. Never use any word processors like Wordpad, MS Word [MS Office], AbiWord, OpenOffice or similar to edit REG files. Always use plain text/ASCII editors like Notepad replacements: PFE32, Credit, Win32pad, Metapad, Notepad++, ConTEXT, etc: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#TXT HTH
  13. dencorso: Thanks a bunch, I got the Q831225 NT4 hotfix. And I'll post it at my WinNT4 fixes page: http://www.mdgx.com/wnt4.htm But I realized I already had the file by itself [without the hotfix somehow, probably sent by erpdude8 a while back], it actually installs on Win95/98 [all editions] as part of CRYPT9X.EXE: http://www.mdgx.com/files/CRYPT9X.EXE More info: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#HEP Strange though, SCHANNEL.DLL file Properties [Explorer or File Manager] says 5.00.1880.14 , but getver.exe says 4.87.1964.1880 [without .14 at the end]. [?] This happened in WinXP SP3, maybe it's different from within Win98, 98 SE or ME? btw: Wonder how I use File Manager from NT4 SP6a in XP? Wonder no more... FMNT HTH
  14. Hi huskie, and welcome to MSFN. To my knowledge, in Win9x/ME all you need in order to integrate drivers, is to place the actual driver files in %windir%\INF [or in the same dir with all other Win9x install CABs on your install CD/DVD] and together with all related INF files. Also, to save disk space, you can zip them up into CABs, just leave the INFs separately [all in the same dir]. Tools that can compress in CAB format [free(ware)]: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP Look at each tool see which ones support the CAB format [clearly stated]. Also make sure extract.exe or extrac32.exe [to extract files from CABs] are on the install CD/DVD in the same dir with the CABs + INFs. Extract/Extrac32 command line switches and how to use them: http://www.mdgx.com/last4.htm#EXTRACT if you plan on using CAB extraction to install software. More info: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip15.htm#CABEX CAB SDK [iexpress.exe = used to compile MS style installers in executable CAB format]: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#CAB To integrate IE 5.5 SP2 or 6.0 SP1, all you need is place all IE CABs and the setup executable(s) into the same dir. Then create a DOS BATch file with this command line [generic example, assumed your CD/DVD drive is letter D, and that you are installing Win98/98 SE (CABs are in WIN98 dir on setup CD)]: D:\WIN98\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E" More info: http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html Then you can add this BATch to run from within an INF file [which sould be in the same dir] (generic example, assumes all dirs are at default locations according to %windir% environment variable): [Version] Signature=$CHICAGO$ AdvancedINF=2.5 [DefaultInstall] RunPreSetupCommands=RPC:1 RunPostSetupCommands=ROC:1 [RPC] "%10%\RUNDLL32.EXE %11%\ADVPACK.DLL,LaunchINFSection SHELLX.INF,DefaultInstall" [ROC] "%01%\Dir_1\Cmd98_1.BAT" "%01%\Dir_2\Cmd98_2.BAT"The :1 switch after RPC + ROC above executes the command line(s) silently [invisible]. RPC section = installs whatever list of commands before all other INF commands are processed. ROC section = installs whatever list of commands after all other INF commands are processed. INF, SED + Iexpress guidelines: http://www.mdgx.com/INF_web/ Hard-wired DIRIDs/LDIDs for dirs locations the way they should be specified in INFs: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms790174.aspx More info on INFs: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#INF IE 6.0 SP1 full download [77 MB]: http://www.filewatcher.com/m/ie60sp1.exe.81333001.0.0.html More info: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#6S1 IE 6.0 SP1 download + install guide [oldie but goodie]: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=34981 This SETUPPP.INF example uses WinME for a custom install [adapt to Win98 SE]: http://www.mdgx.com/files/SETME.ZIP Related topic here: http://www.mdgx.com/me1.htm#UPH Unattended Boot CD for Windows 98 SE (UBCD98) [by an MSFN member]: http://www.mdgx.com/ubcd98.htm This project has huge downloads, but I believe has the source files included. This is a list of drivers UBCD98 uses: http://soporific.dsleague.com/downloads/index.txt Using WPI Classic: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=129449 to install apps/tools/software/games/etc is not that difficult, just ask its author for help if u run into a snag. Basically it's an HTA text file [requires IE 5/6 to function] you can edit in Notepad as you like. HTH
  15. FYI: There is another way, without touching the registry [each folder can have different icon]: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip6.htm#NEWFOLD and similar for drives/partitions: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip6.htm#NEWDRIVE And this is the MS recommended way: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=253689 which requires creating a shortcut to each folder you want to change icon for. I never tried to do this the registry way per your post [this way all folders have same icon]. I've looked at my Win98 SE registry, the entries are same as yours, which means this should work theoretically: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\Folder] "Bitmap"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOC401.DLL,4" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden] "Bitmap"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOC401.DLL,4"Make sure you have SHDOC401.DLL in %windir%\SYSTEM [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS]. Also, if you try this the registry way, environment variables [like %windir%] are not supported by Win9x registry APIs. HTH

Supports LFNs + Linux style wild cards + subdirectories any level deep. JHead works great in a DOS box [from within Windows], have not tested it from native DOS [outside Windows]. Theroretically JHead should not work from outside Windows GUI, because: (1) it is a Win32 port [incompatible with native DOS, but if some1 wants to try, feel free = just make sure DOS4GW/CWSDPMI/DOS32/DPMIONE or similar DPMI driver is found in the same dir or in the %PATH% environment statement]; and (2) native DOS does not support LFNs [without DOSLFN or similar loaded in RAM]. 20. Unfortunately the 9x core, kernel + GDI [Windows 95/98/ME] were never programmed for use with more than 1 CPU core. The only Microsoft OSes programmed for multiple cores are [among Win32 (x86) 32-bit OSes]: XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 + 7. All M$ Win64 64-bit OSes (x64) support multiple cores out of the box: XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 + 7. See microsoft.com for more info. To re-program the OS core, kernel + GDI requires to build a new OS from scratch... any1 wants to volunteer? Do you want to know more? Take a look at ReactOS, an independent, free open source OS, similar to Win2000 (32-bit): http://www.reactos.org/ HTH
  21. [rant] Paint.NET is just another project by a programmer who wants really bad to be noticed and get a job with M$, showing off the features of NET framework. This kind of graphics editor/viewer program can very well be programmed in C++, MFC or even VB or Borland [depending on what features you want], there is no need for any1 to install 20+ MB of NET APIs [and a load of bug-fixes afterwards] just to run Paint.NET and eventually a handful of other NET programs. One can even use Sun's Java [free, open source] to program platform independent complex software, take for example OpenOffice and Vuze [formerly known as Azureus], also free(ware). As far as graphics editors/viewers are concerned, please compare with Irfan View, the best one around [among free(ware) anyway]. This only happens because M$ chose NET as *the* solution for the "better" programming of tomorrow, at the expense of loading more unnecessary "bloat" upon users' computers. BTW: Did you notice how long it takes to install NET 2.0 on Win98 SE [1.4 GHz P3 CPU]? At least 5 minutes... and guess why? because of bazillion of redundant checks, folders, files [and temporary install folders + files] and registry entries. [/rant] About Nero: I'm using Nero 7 [in XP SP3 = came with a DVD burner I bought], and as far as I'm concerned, it is the best CD/DVD burning tool around [commercial ]. Haven't tried newer builds. And you're right, no need to spend money on another burner program, there are so many free(ware) out there. Best wishes.
  22. RICHED20.DLL is ver. 5.50.99.2014 in latest RICHED9X.EXE . I am mentioning this in case you really intended ver. 5.30.23.1230 . If you downloaded this a couple of days ago, maybe, but now has RICHED20.DLL 5.30.23.1230 .Please download again... http://www.mdgx.com/files/RICHED9X.EXE FYI: If you already have 5.50.99.2014 (or any other build newer than 5.30.23.1230) in %windir%\SYSTEM [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM], then it will NOT install over, unless you allow it: dialog box opens -> answer "No" to NOT keep newer version.
