  1. (1) because I'm satisfied with what I have (2) don't feel like spending money on something newer which is more like a rental, than actually owning it. (3) I mostly use it for storing my photography, so any old program like Xnview 1.6 or FastStone 2.30 is 100% sufficient. (4) I still enjoy playing with DOS.... and yes, I do keep some of those old DOS programs just out of nostalgia :-) (5) and, pretty much what everyone above me already said :-)
  2. To original poster, here's a website you might find interesting: Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx ^Keep this in mind, the next time they call you pretending to be from Microsoft, and report them :-) http://www.nbc12.com/story/22210517/on-your-side-scammers-pretend-to-call-from-microsoft
  3. Another thing, be careful when you go to restaurants and hand them your credit cards. One time I got my identity stolen doing this... didn't realize what was going on until I noticed little withdrawls and transfers, and mystery purchases on my credit card statement. I had to verify and prove that I didn't purchase the items! There is a standard procedure that banks go through when this happens. You're supposed to contact the businesses that you have allegedly purchased things from, contact them, get receipts, dates of purchase, etc etc. Basically, the onus, the responsibility to track this crap down will be on you! They don't care. If you present enough "evidence" to the bank to substantiate your claims of fraud, they can freeze that credit card, and then they give you some FBI forms to fill out and you get entered into some huge online theft database and you never hear squat again. Luckily, the amounts they stole, charged from me, wasn't any more than a 1,000 bucks.
  4. I only answer the phone if it's my parents or sister's number, everybody else trying to call me is a lying sack of crap. My experiences with human beings have driven me to this :-) Back when I used to answer my phone, used to get these types of things all the time. Only it was usually credit card companies, mortgage companies, phone companies, insurance companies, etc.. pretending that I actually do business with them. They try to startle you into thinking you owe them money, and if you sign up for their plan this or that, you will be better off. The last one I remember was some phone company calling me telling me that I'm paying too much for long distance calls and that if I switch to their plan, they can save me money. Hello? (1) You don't know jack about my long distance calls. (2) If you did know jack about my long distance calls, you'd know I never make any. But these liars have their scripts to read over the phone. Scripts that are designed to sound vague, scary, ambiguous and upsetting, and generic. They think if they throw enough crap against the wall, call up enough people, that somebody will eventually believe their LIES they're telling unsuspecting people answering their phones. And really, you shouldn't need to use the phone for doing any important business. It's not necessary. If you're doing anything that's important it should be done person to person, at a bank, or an office or whatever. You don't give out information (social security numbers, any account numbers, credit card numbers) over the telephone. It's all scams!!!
  5. I would've forgotten my password, and even my username after that long :-)

  9. what's next... a can of dirt? Think of all the rain water that gets wasted... what we need are more rain barrels. Our city is implementing water meters very soon. Before, you could use all the water you wanted. Not anymore! Rain Barrels!

  16. It's like the perfect, happy, forgotten Operating System. Windows ME was sandwiched between the unstable Windows 95/98 -- which gave the user too much ability to mess up his own system -- and the "We Will Do Everything For You Whether You Like It Or Not" concept of Windows XP. It also seems to be teetering between two worlds, but with access to both. It's like the gateway between the old and new worlds... I'm sounding philosophical now! You can run any old DOS or Windows 3.1 programs, plus there are tons of newer things that still run on ME. And, with KernelEx, you can install some XP-only software. Windows ME is like no other system. I really wish they would've continued to do bug-fixes and patches for it. Can you imagine Windows ME receiving the same amount of hoopla concerning it's End of Life as XP got? They came out less than a year apart though! Back when it reached it's end of life... it was like, oh remember Windows ME, yeah, it's support is over. But nobody uses it anyway so who cares. It was a non-issue.
  17. My rigs of the past.... 1992-ish IBM PS/2 386 cpu 4 MB RAM Cirrus Logic video card with 1mb RAM PC Speaker only, but I remember this DOS program that could play MP3's through the PC Speaker They sounded like the worst AM transistor radio you could imagine, but they worked! DOS 5.5 Windows 3.1 ... I used this computer until, oh, the year 2000 :-) mid to late nineties Some random Dell that I really should have kept :-( 486dx2 CPU Doom worked on this one, but not on the computer above I miss this one Gateway 2000 AMD K62 - 400 MHz My introduction to Windows 98, having skipped 95 entirely Terrible OS (at least I thought back then) this was back when Kazaa was big, and firewalls didn't ship with your computer it was a recipe for tons of malware and viruses blue screens of death on hourly basis :-)
  18. I bookmarked your under construction Win98 webpage, Flasche. Looks like I'll have a second webpage to check everyday, besides here of course. A whole 2 pages for Win98!! Yay! Have fun with that :-)
  19. eh, what's up doc?
  20. No, dont' think so.
  21. I can only speak from personal experience. So I'll recommend what I used to own.... a Compaq Presario 5000 series model 5423. It came with XP but I downgraded to Me. http://www.amazon.com/Compaq-Presario-Desktop-Computers-5423US/dp/B00005YWDQ ^I had one of these and it wasn't bad at all. It was faster and better than what I'm using right now... which is a Pentium III. There are varying reviews on Amazon for the Compaq Presario 5000 5243us model. Some reviewers describe a slower ~600 MHz computer, other describe a 1.6 GHz computer. The one I had was the 1.6 Ghz cpu with 512 MB RAM, and the Nvidiga Geforce 2. It worked like a charm, and those Nvidia Geforce 2mx drivers are easy to find/install for WinMe. I did install a different sound card however. The RAM is also upgradeable to 1 GB.
  22. My main computer is a pentium III, 866mhz with Windows ME. I use this computer mainly for listening to MP3s, burning/ripping audios CD's, and I got all my digital photography stored on here as well. And I also use it for web surfing. Not worried very much about security. Dont' buy anything online, have ClamWin and several other programs installed. Javascript is always turned off, and I have a firewall. If I'd listened to all the naysayers, then I should've been hacked a million times by now. My computer should be having one crash after another, endless blue screens of death, etc etc. Sorry, hasn't happened. It's also a glorified typewriter. Any RTF editor with a spell check will do the job. Plus I've got a few DOS games and other programs that I want to keep using... stuff that I've kept since my first computer back in the early nineties.
  23. Graphical Design LAST - FREE - Cornice 0.6.1 This is an ACDSee clone, image viewer, that works on Win9x. http://wxglade.sourceforge.net/extra/cornice.html -------------------------------------------------------------- Don't know if you're aware, HaloHalo, but I've started an updated list of software here... http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171240-the-updated-mini-list-of-win98me-software/?p=1070837
